Do you know what ''April'' means in Armenian? It is defined as ''to live'' (ապրել)… Definitely, it's not just a month, but the greatest indicator of the springtime when the air smells with a new life. This is the beginning of an amazing season to discover the wonders of Armenia and feel the pleasure of life in one of the oldest countries of the world. As the weather conditions are extremely good, one can take such adventure tours as hiking, biking, climbing, camping, and so on. For classical tour lovers, there are a number of historical places to unveil. Interested in historical events? Visit Tsitsernakaberd Memorial to give tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide held on April 24, 1915 by the Ottoman Empire. Take a tour inside Genocide Museum for thorough information. Armenia is a country where one can enable his/her all senses through eating Armenian food, listening to Armenian music, visiting Armenian sights, exploring the marvelous nature, and, of course, praying in the Armenian churches and cathedrals… Light up your evenings with the walks around the capital city Yerevan. Believe me, there is no other city as beautiful as Yerevan at night. Feel free to stroll up and down the cozy streets and enjoy the hospitality of locals by stepping in any cafe or restaurant. Though life doesn't last forever, nevertheless, we can make moments turn into eternal and lifelong memories worth sharing! Don't forget to involve Armenian in that memory book )) Garen Marcarian Founder-Publisher

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Museum -Institute

The Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute (commonly known as the AGMI) is an Armenian state institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Armenian Genocide by honoring the memories of those who were lost and by teaching universal lessons about and against genocide. The museum implements its mission through permanent and temporary exhibitions and other initiatives that foster the promotion of human rights and the prevention of genocide. The AGMI opened in 1995 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide (architects Sashur Kalashyan and Ludmila Mktrchyan). Couple of years ago, the museum began an extensive exhibition renovation project to both update the information contained with newly uncovered facts and figures, as well as update the core exhibition space to professional standards. On April 21, 2015, official and ceremonial opening of new exhibition took place with the participation of President Serzh Sargsyan. The Director of the Museum is Dr. Hayk Demoyan. The exhibition area of the museum has 12 halls and consists of 52 main headings, in which thousands of new materials are summarized. The exhibits are presented in print as well as through interactive touch-screen displays and multimedia presentations. There are many original and unique photos, documents, and books in the exhibition. The museum provides tours in Armenian, Russian, English, French, and German. The AMGI has grown steadily since 1995, and now has an average of over 100.000 visitors each year. The museum is located in the south-western part of the Memorial Complex, completing already existing structures. The flat roof of the museum’s building is a viewpoint of the panoramic view of Mount Ararat and Yerevan. YEARS LATER…

The Witnesses

T

he Armenian Genocide was prepared and carried out by the Ottoman government in 1915 and the following years. As a result of the genocide, Armenians living in their ancestral homeland (at the time in the Ottoman Empire) were deported and systematically killed. Witnesses and testimony of the Armenian Genocide provide an important and valuable insight into the events during and after the Armenian Genocide. The Republic of Turkey today denies the genocide, although the systematic massacres are recognized as genocide by most scholars. A number of journalists, diplomats, soldiers, physicians, writers, and missionaries witnessed the Armenian Genocide, with hundreds of these witnesses from various European countries (Germany, Austria, Italy, etc.) and the United States experiencing the events firsthand. HENRY MORGENTHAU, the United States Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, is regarded as one of the most prominent Americans who denounced and condemned the Armenian Genocide. Throughout his career as an ambassador, Morgenthau had established contacts with many Young Turk politicians and especially Talat Pasha, the "mastermind" of the Armenian Genocide. In 1918, Morgenthau wrote about his accounts in a book entitled, Ambassador Morgenthau's Story. The book dedicates a chapter to the plight of the Armenians called "Murder of a Nation" where he described the deportations and the atrocities as a "cold-blooded, calculating state policy." GIACOMO GORRINI, Italian Consul of Trabzon, During World War I, openly denounced the Armenian Genocide through press articles and interviews and didn't hesitate to describe the policies of massacre perpetrated against the Armenians. He said if everyone had seen what he had, the condemnation of those acts would have been universal especially on the side of the Christian powers. p EINAR AF WIRSÉN wrote much about the Armenian Genocide in his memoirs Minnen från fred och krig ("Memories from Peace and War"). In his memoirs, Wirsén dedicated a chapter to the massacres entitled Mordet på en nation ("The Murder of a Nation"). FREDERICK G. COAN was a Christian missionary who served in Persia for over 50 years. He provided detailed eyewitness accounts of the deportations and massacres of Armenians. During World War I and at the start of the Armenian Genocide, Coan was continuing his missionary activities in Urmia… Though 103 years have passed bringing millions of evidence on the Armenian Genocide, nevertheless the Turkish government carries on denying their historical sin… If you are interested in this issue, you can visit Genocide Museum in Yerevan. 10 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST:

Easter

''Christ is risen!'' ''Blessed is the resurrection of Christ!''

Easter or “Zatik” in Armenia is one of the most colorful, joyful celebrations of the year. With traditions dating back thousands of years, visitors are invited to church ceremonies, to participate in community events, to feast like the locals and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the region. Incense wafts from inside candlelit cathedrals, Easter eggs are dyed, often in dark red for the blood of Christ. Voices everywhere are raised in greeting and response of “Krisdos haryav ee merelotz!” – Christ is risen!” and “Orhnyal eh harootiuny Krisdosee!” – “Blessed is the resurrection of Christ!” while Easter eggs are cracked together! Sweet bread is shared and the table is decorated with colored eggs nestled in dishes of fresh spring grass. Actually, people for centuries celebrated the Easter with great solemnity and richness peculiar to the Armenian people. A number of customs and rituals have survived and they hold sacred in every Armenian family. Armenians are preparing for Easter long before the celebration day. Especially for the holiday housewives plant wheat seeds in a beautiful dish, water it and place in a sunny place to germinate. Seeds usually germinate well for the upcoming holiday, turning into a dense green carpet, which is then neatly decorated with colored eggs. Such a green meadow with red eggs comes to symbolize new life, rebirth and serves as the main decoration of the festive table. It should be noted that the tradition of coloring eggs can be found in every Christian country. However, in Armenia, it is accepted to paint eggs only in red, as the embodiment of the holy blood of the Savior and recompense of reward to his torments in the name of the salvation of the human race. The Easter holiday begins at 17:00 on the Saturday after Palm Sunday. People flock to churches and cathedrals, enterprising men peddle candles and flowers at entrances to church grounds, and groups of giggling children walk throughout the city handing out small Easter cards of their own creation to random pedestrians. As the sun falls, the city lights up not only with street lights, but also the candle lights of people trickling out from the churches, on their way to the homes of others for more celebrations to be held on Sunday.

This year we are celebrating the holiday on April 1. 16 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

CARPET DESIGN Armenian rugs are beautiful to look at with their vibrant colors, geometric patterns and mysterious symbols. This traditional art form can be found throughout the Armenian Highland. Though there are stylistic similarities, villagers in different areas created designs specific to their regions.

ALPHABET It may be the most distinct of Armenian symbols and one that has had the greatest role in defining the Armenian people’s identity. Mythology has it that its 36 letters were bestowed upon Mesrob Mashtots by God. The letters have been used continuously since the 5th century A.D., almost unchanged.

KHACHKAR The Armenian cross stones carved out of tufa, a volcanic rock, are exquisite examples of intricate lace design. Historically, these “khachkars,” what they’re called in Armenian, adorned gravesites in cemeteries, but they were (and are) also found as decorations at religious and cultural sites.

SIX-POINTED STAR Although commonly associated with Judaism, the six-pointed star frquently appears in ancient Armenian carvings on khachkars and church reliefs. It often appears with the wheel of eternity at the center. POMEGRANATE It can represent fertility, prosperity and good fortune – and it tastes great. The pomegranate is used as a symbol of Armenian culture, from trinkets to art. Indeed, the famous film director Sergey Parajanov named his film about the Armenian bard Sayat Nova “The Color of Pomegranates.” WHEEL OF ETERNITY Seen everywhere from ancient church carvings to modern-day emblems and company logos, the Armenian symbol of eternity is among the culture’s most significant signs. It is also thought to be a sign for the sun. 22 TOURINFO MAGAZINE
