DRIVEN BY PASSION

“Mountaineering is more than just a sport. It’s a passion.” These ten words were spoken by Austrian alpinist Hermann Buhl. Our PASSION FOR MOUNTAIN SPORTS is what drives us every day. Our products are not just created on the drawing board – we get our inspiration from moments on the mountains. From the mountains, for the mountains! This love is reflected in every detail of our new Summer 17 collection. Our ALPINE ORIGINS are what have always shaped us. The best proof of this is our new SHIELD VINTAGE line, which was inspired by mountain climbing legends like Hermann Buhl. In 1943, the adventurous Austrian ascended the west wall of the Maukspitze in the Wild Kaiser range of mountains, and in doing so solved one of the most difficult climbing problems in the Eastern Alps. The SHIELD VINTAGE line is reminiscent of this climbing pioneer. For the materials, we have nevertheless now used the latest HIGH-TECH MATERIALS and combined them with the TRADITIONAL, NATURAL FIBERS of former days – a combination of tradition and innovation! Those who wish to climb the trails laid out by Hermann Buhl and his companions, but do not yet have the necessary expertise to do so, should listen up now. The ORTOVOX SAFETY ACADEMY will now also be available in summer, focusing entirely upon alpine climbing. In two courses, we’ll be getting beginners and more advanced climbers ready for longer climbing tours – all under the supervision of the very best PROFESSIONAL MOUNTAIN GUIDES in the Alps. Passion not only determines our actions, but also the actions of our SHEEP FARMERS in TASMANIA. That was the most important insight we brought home from our journey to Tasmania in early 2015. Our six farmer families have been involved in sheep farming for generations and are PASSIONATE about caring for our woolly material suppliers. Eliza Forlonge and the origins of Tasmanian sheep breeding KENILWORTH HAS A SPECIAL STORY: It is a farm that formerly belonged to the famous ELIZA FORLONGE from Glasgow, who was the FIRST PERSON to IMPORT MERINO SHEEP from Saxony to Australia and Tasmania. She herded the sheep on foot to the port of Hamburg in order to ship them to Tasmania. At that time it was a risky and courageous undertaking – particularly for a woman travelling alone. That’s why Eliza Forlonge’s pioneering achievements are recognized in the district of Campbelltown to this day. Eliza’s sheep provided the FOUNDATION FOR AUSTRALIA’S FINE-WOOL INDUSTRY. In 1835 after the death of her husband, Eliza sold the farm and parts of the herd to one DAVE TAYLOR. Nowadays visitors to Kenilworth are greeted by a young Dave Taylor, who runs the farm with his family in what is now the SIXTH GENERATION.

SIXTH-GENERATION SHEEP BREEDING A typical day at Kenilworth starts between 6 and 7 am. Dave checks the animals and pasture to make sure that there is enough food and water – that’s the only way to achieve OPTIMUM WOOL QUALITY. In the district of Campbelltown, they produce one of the finest merino wools you can find. In sheep breeding, Dave combines TRIED-AND-TESTED TRADITIONS WITH MODERN APPROACHES: He uses contemporary examination methods to keep his animals healthy and maintain wool production at a high level. Each year parameters such as wool thickness (microns) and wool length are used to produce a ranking, which is used to ensure the herd is always BUILT ON THE BEST BREEDING ANIMALS.

SHEARING IS SCHEDULED FOR SIX WEEKS EVERY YEAR: A sheep provides approx. 6 kilograms of wool, meaning Dave produces around 43,000 kilograms of wool a year. Around 50 % OF HIS BEST WOOL GOES TO ORTOVOX. Dave knows that his animals and land are his best and only capital. If that weren’t the case, he admits, there’s no way he could still be running this farm in the sixth generation.

MERINO SHIELD VINTAGE CORVARA ANORAK Products in the SHIELD VINTAGE line are at home in all alpine regions, from the Hirschberg to the Birkkarspitze. Inspired by the clothing style of early climbing pioneers, we mix TRADITIONAL FIBERS with modern HIGH-TECH MATERIALS. That’s why we use the HIGH PERFORMANCE MEMBRANE DERMIZAX NX from Toray in the hood and shoulder zones to keep out the wet and the wind. A wax ﬁnish protects the organic cotton against moisture and at the same time provides high breathability in the front and back areas. Our MERINO SHIELD TEC line is at home on long alpine routes. The pants are extremely SCUFF-RESISTANT and ROBUST thanks to processing with CORDURA®. In the Martindale test used to test scuff resistance, the primary material for the shorts and pants was able to withstand over 50,000 abrasion cycles. The LIGHT CLIMBING PANTS are made of merino wool, elastane and polyamide, along with CORDURA® – a mix that guarantees HIGH BREATHABILITY and GREAT FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT. The 4-WAY STRETCH MATERIAL keeps up with each of your movements on the mountain. In order to protect high-stress areas such as the knees, we’ve used an EVEN MORE ROBUST MATERIAL MIX made of CORDURA® (>100.000 abrasion cycles in the Martindale test). MERINO SHIELD SHELL PIZ BADILE JACKET While developing MERINO SHIELD SHELL, our softshell line, our focus was on creating high-performance products for high-alpine tours. Features such as robustness, comfort through freedom of movement and breathability were particularly important. The high proportion of CORDURA® in the material mix ensures the BEST POSSIBLE SCUFF RESISTANCE and LONGEVITY (min. 80.000 abrasion cycles in the Martindale test) and so offers optimum protection in the ﬁeld. High FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT is guaranteed thanks to highly elastic Lycra ﬁbers – the material used in the jacket and pants can be stretched by 20 %. Because we know how important it is that water vapor can easily escape from the inside to the outside , we trust a no-membrane design for the MERINO SHIELD SHELL line – but not completely. For the necessary protection, we use a WINDPROOF INSERT in the front area made from 3L LODEN PUNCHHOLE with integrated membrane. To ensure that no water can permeate in from the outside, the surface of the jacket and pants is DWR-treated. Merino wool on the interior also ensures great wear comfort and a pleasant microclimate. • HIGH BREATHABILITY • EXTREMELY ROBUST material completes at least 80.000 abrasion cycles in the Martindale test • WATER-RESISTANT thanks to DWR treatment

MERINO FLEECE LIGHT MELANGE ZIP NECK When it comes to climbing, we like companions that do everything and that we can depend on: we have now made our MERINO FLEECE LIGHT line even more robust! These light and insulating tops weigh the same as before (210g/m²), but are now much MORE DURABLE. How do we do it? We still use a waffle structure on the inside, which ensures good moisture wicking and therefore feels warm and dry on the skin. However, the OUTSIDE is now SMOOTH, so the material provides less contact surface. LONG-LASTING The name Tencel® stems from the English word “TENACITY”. The ﬁber is particularly stable, which is evident in its strong resistance to pilling and pitting.

As Tencel® transports moisture to the ﬁber core and always has a SMOOTH FIBER SURFACE, bacteria stand no chance. The result: up to 2000 TIMES LESS BACTERIA than on synthetic ﬁbers.

Tencel® can ABSORB ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF MOISTURE, but the surface of the ﬁber remains dry and comfortable. Fibrils, a network of submicroscopic channels, transport the moisture quickly and evenly to the ﬁber core.

Our Insulation line contains Swiss wool. This is the finest virgin wool with Swiss origins from the canton of Wallis. Swisswool places particular value on sustainable production and regional origin. Long transport routes are avoided whenever possible. Virgin wool is extremely lightweight and has excellent insulation properties. Numerous air pockets are created around the virgin wool, which can store large volumes of heat. If you pack the clothing items together, the air escapes and the products can be compressed to extremely small sizes.

The high-end yarn structure of Nuyarn improves the performance and function of the wool. Polyamide forms the core of Nuyarn. The synthetic fiber is particularly tear-resistant, elastic and light. Merino wool is wrapped around the polyamide center, creating a yarn composition that combines all of the positive features of synthetic fibers and merino wool. Nuyarn – improves the functionality of merino wool. Your time on the mountain will be an experience to remember thanks to the improved performance of our Nuyarn merino clothing.

In our new MERINO HARDSHELL LIGHT collection, we use the highperformance Toray Dermizax® DT membrane. This membrane from the Japanese manufacturer combines the waterproofing of a hardshell with the lightness and breathability of a windbreaker. Advantages:

In our MERINO NATURETEC lines, we do without a membrane completely. The fine merino fibers are interwoven with the Naturetec material from the Swiss manufacturer schoeller®. The advantage: The material is extremely breathable and still provides protection against wind, light precipitation and dirt. The surface has a microstructure that causes water and even dirt particles to lastingly roll off. The combination of merino wool and durable polyamide is extremely robust and elastic – making it ideal for high-action sports. The merino wool on the skin ensures good wear comfort and ideal microclimate management in any type of weather and at any temperature.

It is 100 % windproof, waterproof (min. 20,000mm), breathable (min. 25,500g/m²/24h) and elastic at the same time. The outer material provides maximum longevity. The polyamide is processed as part of a new webbing procedure, resulting in a 50 % weight reduction with greater resistance. The patented micro bead structure on the interior provides long-term scuff resistance for the membrane underneath and increases wear comfort on the skin at the same time. MERINO HARDSHELL LIGHT MATERIAL MAIN MATERIAL: 100 % polyamide (TORAY DERMIZAX® DT), DISCREET INSERTS: MERINO COOL: 50 % virgin wool (MERINO) + 50 % Lyocell (Tencel®)

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURETEC AND NATURETEC LIGHT The two materials differ solely in terms of thickness, which also dictates their use (moderate/intense activities). The Light version weighs 175 g/m2, and the somewhat heavier standard version weighs in at 230 g/m2. However, the structures are identical. MERINO SHIELD ZERO MERINO SHIELD ZERO For our new MERINO SHIELD ZERO collection, we use a mix of polyamide and spandex in the main material. This lightweight material is elastic (2-way stretchable), extremely breathable, quick drying and durable (min. 30,000 abrasion cycles in the Martindale test). Inserts made of MERINO MESH in the waistband and pocket linings ensure extra comfort. The material is DWR treated and therefore water-resistant.

The new material mix of Cordura®, polyamide and spandex is extremely comfortable to wear and boasts a very soft feel which does not rustle, even when moving. Inserts made of MERINO MESH in the waistband and the pockets also increase the wear comfort. MERINO FLEECE LIGHT MERINO FLEECE LIGHT The knitted fabric mix of merino wool, polyester and elastane stands for pure functionality. A waffle structure on the inside makes ideal moisture wicking possible and ensures a dry and comfortable feeling on the skin. In contrast, the shell is smooth in order to provide as little contact surface as possible. The material is very elastic, robust and quick drying. The merino wool on the inside provides excellent wear comfort and outstanding temperature management. MERINO FLEECE LIGHT MATERIAL 72% polyester + 25% virgin wool (MERINO) + 3% elastane

MERINO SHIELD SHELL The MERINO SHIELD SHELL softshell line stands for maximum protection. The high proportion of Cordura® (71 %) makes the product long-lasting and very resistant. Cordura® is a registered brand name of the Swiss company Invista. The fibers are made of a high-strength polyamide (nylon 6.6) with superior tear and abrasion resistant properties compared to those of normal polyamide materials. The robustness of the material mix of Cordura®, merino wool and Lycra was demonstrated by the Martindale test: This material mix can withstand at least 80,000 abrasion cycles. We use Pertex Microlight as the outer material for all our SWISSWOOL LIGHT and SWISSWOOL LIGHT TEC products. It is light, very durable and scuff-resistant. The windproof material is also soft and comfortable.

MERINO SHIELD VINTAGE stands for a symbiosis between organic cotton and polyamide. Cotton and polyamide are woven together and then coated with wax. The wax finish protects the organic cotton/polyamide mix against moisture and ensures a unique look and feel. For reliable protection against wet, the material is also DWR treated. The material mix is also very breathable (min. 20,000g/m² / 24h) and robu st (min. 30,000 abrasion cycles in the Martindale tes t).

MATERIAL PERTEX MICROLIGHT 100% Polyamide

The cotton is organically grown and certified in accordance with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The GOTS is a globally applied standard for processing texti les made from organically grown natural fibers. It defines not only the environmental requirements for the whole textile production chain, but also social standards that all processors and manufacturers must meet. Quality assurance is carried out via independent certification of the whole textile supply chain.

TENCEL® We use TENCEL® for all products in the MERINO COOL range. This natural fiber is obtained from eucalyptus cellulose in a highly environmentally-friendly manner and free from pollutants. In our MERINO BLACK SHEEP collection, we use an elastic and simultaneously robust material mix of cotton, merino wool and elastane. The stretch insert made of Cordura®, merino wool and Lycra is very durable and ensures plenty of freedom of movement. Thanks to the inclusion of merino wool, the material stands out with the positive qualities of the natural material, such as the unique merino microclimate and odor neutralizing effect.

MERINO COOL AIR MESH, a combination of polyamide and MERINO COOL, is used in the lower back area (waistline) of the pants in our MERINO SHIELD SHELL line and the MERINO SHIELD TEC line. The elastic and soft AIR MESH inserts are made up of two layers: A polyamide shell and a MERINO COOL liner. There are cavities between these two layers which act as a cooling cushion and ensure high wear comfort. The MERINO COOL on the inside absorbs moisture and cools at the same time.

ALPINE SERIES TRAVERSE 28 S ALPINE stands for a super-wide range of uses, from the valley right to the summit! TRAVERSE is the ideal companion for these long alpine tours. The lightweight back system impresses with breathable contact pads that ensure permanent CIRCULATION OF AIR and EXCELLENT WEAR COMFORT. ERGONOMICALLY DESIGNED SHOULDER STRAPS and a WIDE HIP BELT distribute weight evenly. Clever little features such as hydration system compatibility, ski fastening options, a hip pocket and a rain cover all come as standard on all TRAVERSE backpacks. Elasticated side pockets and a slide-in pocket on the front are perfect for quickly storing away small items. The TRAVERSE 30 can be opened up completely using the circumferential front zipper, providing a good overview of the equipment inside. The smaller variants come without lid pockets, so instead there are two extra compartments in addition to the main compartment.

To determine the BACK LENGTH, use a measuring tape to measure yourself from the TOP OF THE HIP BONE UP TO the 7TH CERVICAL VERTEBRA (it clearly protrudes).

Our S-backpacks are SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR WOMEN AND MEN WITH SHORTER BACKS They are primarily characterized by their significantly shorter back system, which makes them PERFECT FOR PEOPLE WITH SHORT BACKS. The hip and shoulder straps have also been adapted to the FEMALE ANATOMY: The shoulder straps are thinner and shorter and have a pronounced S-shape. However, the hip fins are shorter and conical formed.

Although the fabric is EXTREMELY LIGHT-WEIGHT, thanks to its ripstop design it is also resistant to tearing and abrasion. The inside is PU coated, making the fabric waterproof.

Thanks to the distinctive ripstop interlocking thread pattern, the fabric is VERY TEAR AND ABRASION RESISTANT and therefore LONG-LASTING. The fabric also impresses with its light weight. The PU coating on the inside makes the fabric waterproof.

BACK SYSTEMS BACKPACKS HIGH FLEX CONTACT The back system for our CLIMBING SERIES offers a light-weight, REMOVABLE ALUMINUM FRAME and a FULL-CONTACT CARRYING SYSTEM. The frame is very flexible, but rigid along the horizontal axis in order to bear as much weight as possible. Thanks to its 3D shape, the backpack fits closely to the back and guaranties GREAT FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT and the best possible wear comfort.

The Swisswool backs on our HIGH ALPINE SERIES backpacks are made of pressed WOOL FLEECE with a punchhole covering. Thanks to the wool, the backpack can ABSORB MUCH MORE MOISTURE FROM THE BACK and at the same time is MORE BREATHABLE than conventional backpacks that are made using foam material, for example. A further advantage of wool is that the surface of the back system dries faster. The FULL CONTACT BACK fits closely to the body and offers optimum weight distribution. The back design consists of two aluminum struts that offer HIGH STABILITY and guarantee GREAT COMFORT, even when the backpack is heavily loaded.
