APRIL 2019
The Osceola Council on Aging has provided support to the elderly and their families since 1971. In an effort to assist their clients, the REALTORS® Care Committee will collect nonperishable food items to stock the council’s food pantry. Suggested items include: pasta, canned vegetables, canned soup, tomato sauce (canned or jarred), rice, beans (canned or dry), canned meats, oatmeal, cereals, canned milk, canned or bottled juice, crackers, canned fruits, instant potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. If you would like to contribute, you can bring your items to the Association during regular business hours from 8 am - 5 pm Tuesday to Friday, and 8 am - 4 pm on Mondays. You may also bring items to OSCAR classes that you attend during the month of April. The deadline to donate is April 30.
OSCAR TAKES THE CAPITOL!
A delegation of politically-minded OSCAR members and RealtorsÂŽ from all over Florida recently made a trip to Tallahassee for Great American Realtor Days. They spent three days at the capitol advocating for our community during meetings with legislators. During this event they received a surprise visit from Gov. Ron DeSantis, during the legislative briefing luncheon event. He spoke on a variety of topics important to Realtors, such as the environment and affordable housing. While at the Capitol, the delegation was able to meet with local officials including Senator Victor M. Torres Jr., District 43 Representative John Cortes, District 39 Representative Josie Tomkow, and District 42 Representative Mike La Rosa, who is also an OSCAR member. During these meetings the OSCAR delegation urged our legislators to support bills that protect private property rights, provide remedies for open and expired building permits, authorize remote notaries in Florida, curb Assignment of Benefits fraud and abuse, and lower the business rent tax. Those were among the top priorities Florida RealtorsÂŽ are advocating for this legislative session. Special thank you to the event sponsors, Freedom Mortgage and Supra. We encourage you to stay engaged in our political process. Remember, your voice matters and should be heard!

RPAC Committee This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC). We have continued to promote the election of proREALTOR® candidates across the United States. During Great American Realtor Days (GARD) we had the opportunity to meet with our local elected officials. Legislators were reminded that we need to continue to chip away at the Business Rent Tax, and to reduce Assignment of Benefits abuse to keep insurance rates low. Map-making technology like LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) will perfect the flood insurance maps and in turn, could reduce or eliminate flood insurance premium coverage on previously mapped areas by FEMA mapping. Realtors® work hard and deserve to play hard! During GARD we were also treated to networking events, a major investor reception, and a great block party on Adams Street that featured a variety of food and drinks, live music, and activities. Many of your favorite Florida Realtors® leaders raised monies for RPAC by participating in the dunk tank. The money was given freely by REALTORS® in recognition of the importance of the political process. A great time was had by all!

REALTORS® Care Committee The REALTORS® Care Committee has been very active in our community. In February we volunteered for IDignity, which helps the less fortunate obtain Florida ID’s, Birth Certificates, and other necessary documents to be able to survive in this world. We also volunteered at the Second Harvest Food Bank at the St Cloud Civic Center. We handed out food to hundreds of families that might not otherwise have anything to eat. We have several projects lined up for our team throughout the year, but we are always looking for opportunities to serve our community. If you know of any events that might be a good service project, please contact Nancy Hubbard at nhubbard@osceola-realtors.com.
