Typically REALTORS operate as Self Employed, Sole Proprietor, or Independent Contractors. This means that we are responsible for paying our taxes independently. With careful record keeping, and professional guidance the inconveniences of tax deadlines can be minimal. A Broker who pays out more than $600.00 to an agent will file a Form 1099 - MISC to the IRS. Independent contractors are required to pay their taxes in quarterly installments if the total amount of tax due for the year is more than $1,000.00. The exception to this rule would be an agent who made no profit the previous year and paid no taxes. Be sure to speak to a professional accountant to calculate your quarterly payments. Some of the most common deductions to take advantage of are: • • • • •
Home office expenses Desk fees Dues Education/ Training/ Coaching Real Estate License fees/ renewal fees
• Business travel • Auto maintenance/repairs, gas, mileage, insurance • Marketing - signs, business cards, website development • Gifts (up to $25) You can refer to IRS Publications 463 and 535. Real Estate business expenses must be: ordinary and necessary, directly related to your business, and a reasonable amount. (TurboTax) A couple of things that are not deductible are: Clothing, unless it's required or essential, or not suitable for general or personal wear. Also, fees associated with lobbying or political advocacy are not deductible. So, with insightful planning, and advice from the tax professionals, we all can learn how to keep more of the money we earn! - Be blessed.

RPAC relies on donations from members to be an effective presence in the political arena in order to safeguard private property rights and access to homeownership. MEMBERS FIRST IS OUR TOP PRIORITY!
Hello members! We’ve seen many changes at the Association over recent months as we work to enhance the membership experience for our valued REALTORS®. We have a ‘Members First’ staff priority that focuses on quality of service and convenience so that we can be a better resource to helping our members succeed in their businesses. Just last month we debuted our Members Market which features a number of useful items that can be utilized in the field, like signage or lockboxes. We also added a snack counter, because we know you can be hungry after a long class at the Association. You may have noticed changes to our website as well. In addition to the redesign, we’ve added a web chat feature that allows you to chat with our team in real time without having to call or visit the office. These are just a few of the new changes we’re making to enhance your membership with us. And we’re always looking for suggestions from our members on how we can help enhance their experience. Therefore, we’ve added a suggestion box to our office so we can get your feedback and implement beneficial changes. There are a couple other important changes I would like to announce. First, we have a new Professional Development Director. I would like to welcome Mona Somers to our team. Mona started with us at the beginning of this month and comes to us with a Bachelor of Science degree from UCF. She has extensive experience in customer service, training, software development, and operations, and has worked with companies like Walt Disney World; Vista-United Telecommunications; Hanson, Walter & Associates; and most recently Poinciana Medical Center. for foster kids ACCEPTING DONATIONS NOW THROUGH MAY 31ST
OSCAR SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED OSCAR’s REALTORS® Care Committee is proud to announce the winners for our annual scholarship essay competition. This year our Association was able to award seven $1,000 awards to high school seniors in the county which will help them in their academic future. Applicants were asked to write a 250-word essay that explained the value that REALTORS® bring to the community. The committee reviewed a number of submissions that offered many insightful viewpoints on the topic, but ultimately only seven were chosen. The 2018 OSCAR scholarship winners are Spencer Bennett, Deanna Guzman, Stephanie Chaparro-Roldan, Ayoub Mahdar, Angel Mata, Sabah Qureshi, and Mariangely Soto-Machuca. Their exemplary essays made a strong impression on the committee and were distinct in their content and quality despite the many high-caliber submissions they were up against.
REALTORS® Care Committee Chair, Charlie DeCarlo extended her congratulations to the scholarship recipients saying, “We on the committee are so pleased to be able to help these individuals pursue a brighter future through a college education. They’ve demonstrated tremendous potential in their writings, and we know they have the determination and aptitude to achieve great things.” Education has been an Association priority for some time. Since 2011 OSCAR has been helping high school seniors fund their tuition through scholarships like this. These efforts have provided over $28,000 in financial assistance. “We hope to continue doing this for many more years to come,” stated Vice Chair Kelly Freeman “We’re very much invested in our community, and by providing education opportunities for our youth, we are sowing the seeds for new businesses, job creation, and higher wages - all while fostering growth in our locale.”

The prestigious event will run from 7pm until 10pm and is open to members and non-members alike at a cost of $100 and $125 respectively. If you’re looking for a special occasion to dress up and network with your peers, mark your calendars for this upcoming event! This function will be held to raise funds and awareness for the Global Alliance Committee’s principal charity, MERCY CORPS. This organization exists to respond to worldwide crises, offering monetary and humanitarian support. MERCY CORPS has a stated mission to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. This charity is an invaluable humanitarian organization that puts itself at the center of catastrophes all over the world in order to mitigate hardship and bring about some kind of normalcy in the face of adversity. The Committee has raised thousands to benefit this charity, and hopes to raise even more at this Black Tie Social to aid in the ongoing crises happening all over the world.

One more exciting announcement on behalf of the Global Alliance Committee: We are now a proud participant of the National Association of REALTORS® Ambassador Association Program. In this program, our Association is partnered with one of the more than 90 real estate associations in 72 countries that are affiliated with NAR. Through this arrangement the committee serves as a liaison between our partner Association in Belgium and the National Association, offering guidance and best practices. The benefits of this bilateral partnership go both ways. Our Association can be a resource to help the development of organized real estate within a country or within the framework of a country’s local Association, while potentially developing business opportunities for members here and abroad. We are passionate about creating partnerships and opportunities all around the globe. LEADING THE WAY AT THE DISTRICT 12 ECONOMIC SUMMIT On April 5 our staff and members of our Association were present for the annual District 12 Economic Summit in partnership with the Florida REALTORS® Association. The event, which stimulated a great degree of interest was co-sponsored by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) and held at the new South APM Station at the Orlando International Airport.
Attendees heard from keynote speaker Phil Brown, CEO of the GOAA and from guest speaker Brett Anderson who spoke on the topic of Amendment 2, which would make a 10 percent cap on annual homestead exemption permanent rather than let it expire t the beginning of next year. And to conclude the event, attendees were introduced to Florida REALTORS® leadership candidates. District 12 Vice President, Jeff Perry, who was on hand to faciliate the event stated, “This summit was an informative series of presentations that highlighted the economic development in our local area and stressed topics important to our industry. I am very pleased that so many of our members were able to attend and make the event such a success.”
