CONFERENCES “ R E A L T O R ® CONFERENCES. WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?!! EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING TO MAKE YOU A BETTER AGENT FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS!”
BECKY CHIRILLO
REALTOR® Conferences. What’s in it for me?!! EVERYTHING! Everything to increase your real estate knowledge. Everything to expand your network of real estate peers/associates. Everything to bring you up to date on real estate technology. Everything to show you how to best market yourself in real estate. Everything to make you a BETTER agent for your customers! A few short years ago when I attended my very first conference I had no idea what to expect! I went there a little nervous, but full of anticipation for what I was about to experience. I’ve been hooked ever since. Yes, it was a little hard to put my busy schedule on hold and get away from my business. Careful planning and making arrangements in advance took a lot of the worry out of being gone for a few days. And, let’s face it, one of the better features of my profession is the flexibility. Much of my work can be done from anywhere! As a REALTOR®, a member of both the Florida REALTORS®, and the National Association of REALTORS®, we are offered 4 major conventions through the year.
The first is the Florida REALTORS® Mid-Winter Meetings. This is around the end of January and is held very conveniently right next door in Orlando! These meetings are held to give the members an opportunity to advance the Association’s initiatives through advocacy and committee involvement. Meaning we, “the members”, actually get to have our voices heard! There are FR committee meetings where, as a member of the committee you will work alongside other committee members to advance the real estate industry. Your opinions matter, and your participation is encouraged! Not a FR committee member yet? Most meetings are open to the general membership. Come sit in on a meeting to see if it might be a right fit for your interest and abilities. With workshops, work groups, committees, and even special entertainment, you will be sure your time has been well spent! In the middle of May, The National Association of REALTORS® has their Mid-Year Legislative and Governance Conference. This is held in Washington, DC! Giving Association leaders, and all members in general a platform, this event brings together our REALTOR® voices to speak on all issues pertaining to real estate.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Committee meetings, education, important sessions with speakers like Dr. Ben Carson, and Administrator William Long will give us valuable insight into HUD and FEMA issues pertaining to both REALTORS® and those we serve. We will have “Hill visits” where we have an opportunity to meet with our congressional delegates. I think this conference is my favorite because as REALTORS® we all advocate for our customers and their property rights. It’s just much more exciting to be involved where all of the excitement begins! Next is the Florida REALTORS® convention and Expo in Orlando. This is towards the end of August. This year’s trade expo is FREE! With over 200 vendors, from property insurance, to technology, to international, and everything in
CHART YOUR PATH TO LEADERSHIP Do you see yourself in a leadership role? Do you aspire to go above and beyond? Do you consider yourself to be go-getter? If so, the REALTOR® Leadership Program is for you. The National Association of REALTORS® created the REALTOR® Leadership Program to groom members for leadership in local and state Associations and on Multiple Listing Services. Taking part in the courses offered in the program will teach members such skills as leadership and governance, staff and volunteer relationships, meeting management, conflict resolution, duties expected of directors, strategic planning, effective communication, strategic decision making, governance principals, and risk management. There are four courses contained in NAR’s REALTOR® Leadership Program. The first, Leadership 100: On the Path to Leadership, is available online at no cost to members. It is recommended before taking subsequent courses, but not required. Members can take this class at their convenience by going to: https://www.onlinelearning.realtor/A/Product/Details/ 3353/leadership-100-on-the-path-to-leadership . On June 5th, our Association will be bringing Leadership 200 and Leadership 300 to members, faciliated by instructors Alice and Don Martin. With over 50 years of experience in leadership and real estate between them, Alice has facilitated leadership training and strategic planning for Associations and was instrumental in the development of U.S. adoption of REALTOR® Leadership Program courses, while Don has served as a Past President at the local and state level and is a former REALTOR® of the year at 3 different Associations.
between! You can find your favorites, as well as get acquainted with the best of those who provide service and technology to our industry. You’re sure to find a service to enhance your business. There are over 35 leading education sessions to choose, from specific training in communications, team building, agent branding, and MUCH, much more! This year we will be entertained to “stitches” by the comedic pair of Penn and Teller! Headlining our General Session we are sure to be entertained by a memorable performance of magic and comedy. Lastly, we have the National Association of REALTORS® Annual Conference and Expo. This year it is to be held in Boston, Massachusetts from November 2nd through the 5th. This conference is the LARGEST annual event for the REALTOR® profession. With over 100 educational sessions, and a trade show of over 400 exhibitors you are sure to leave as a smarter, more educated, and savvy professional in your field. With all of the choices above, I encourage and invite you to give one a try! It’s fun! It’s educational! You can’t lose. It will help you grow your business! And, did I mention it’s fun? I hope to see you there! -
Be Blessed
The day starts at 8:30 with breakfast available to early attendees, then the first class, Leadership 200 begins at 9:00am. In L200, the focus is on ‘Becoming a Leader’ and members will learn the importance of TWIS LIZASUAIN governance, REALTOR® Association Structure, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER and myths and realities of Association leadership activity. Other focuses of the class will include staff/volunteer relationships, participation in meetings, and consensus building. L300: Enhancing Leadership Skills, will take place after a noon lunch hour, with food provided by OSCAR. This course will teach attendees the duties of directors, strategic planning, meeting management, and communication skills. A newly added fourth course is available to presidents and presidents-elect, called Leadership 400: Taking the Reins. This 6.5 hour course can be taken the day prior to the Leadership Summit in Chicago on August 5, 2018. It costs $300 for attendees and will teach approaches to strategic decision making, meeting management, governance principals, risk management, and other topics. I hope you consider signing up for our classes in June to set yourself on a path to leadership. OSCAR provides a number of different ways to hone your skills in committees, on our boards, or through volunteering. Taking part in the Leadership Training Program is a great primer for building your expertise and shaping your career as a leader.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TASK FORCE UPDATE Recently, the Professional Development Task Force, led by James Williams III, Chair, met to discuss items including 2018 professional development course offerings, as well as the results of the April 2018 membership survey on professional development. Following this review, the Task Force made several recommendations: • To include additional contract class offerings • To develop a sub-committee, working with the Commercial Committee, with a targeted focus on “commercial” course offerings such as commercial leasing, investment property, commercial land • The addition of Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES) course offerings • New Lunch and Learn programs, from 11 am – 1 pm, with 2 CE credit offerings
MONA SOMERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Our recent survey, indicated members are interested in occasional course offerings after 4 p.m. And in addition to real estate specific course offerings, productivity training tools were considered beneficial. The survey also noted that respondents appreciated the bi-lingual Core Ethics and various MLS course offerings. We’d like to thank all who participated, and we look forward to your feedback in the next survey! If you wish to give further feedback on professional development, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at msomers@osceola-realtors.com.

TAKING DONATIONS NOW THROUGH MAY 31ST REALTORS® CARE COMMITTEE
THE REALTORS® CARE COMMITTEE IS ASKING OSCAR MEMBERS TO HELP THE OSCEOLA COUNCIL ON AGING STOCK THEIR PANTRIES. DROP OFF DONATIONS AT OUR OFFICE THROUGH MAY 31ST.
REALTORS CARE COMMITTEE LENDS SUPPORT TO BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB Our REALTORS® Care Committee has been keeping busy lending their time and resources to our local community. Just last month they stopped by the Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida to make a $1,000 contribution to help kids in need. The Boys and Girls Club provides a safe haven for at-risk kids where they can develop tools for success. Their mission is to enable all young people, especially those most in need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. This is not the first time the Boys and Girls Club has drawn support from the Committee. 2018 Chair, Charlie DeCarlo explained, “Ensuring resources are available to our youth to keep them focused on their futures and the fulfillment of their potential is imperitive in creating better communities. We want to help them stay on a productive track so they can contribute their skills to our local area.”
That’s not all the REALTORS® Care Committee is up to. During the month of May they will be collecting suitcases for foster kids who would otherwise be moving their belongings in trash bags. We’re accepting new, wheeled luggage at the Association during normal business hours through the 31st. We’ll also be accepting dry food sundries to help stock the pantry at the Osceola Council on Aging. The Council and the REALTORS® Care Committee are asking you bring dry pasta, canned goods, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, canned tuna, beans, spachetti sauce, rice, crackers, granola bars, and or fruit juice. This collection will also run through the 31st of this month. And finally, we’ll be collecting backpacks and school supplies for kids in the coming school year. Keep your eyes peeled for more info on that as we approach the Fall.

REMINDER: ETHICS & BUSINESS PRACTICES REQUIRED FOR RENEWAL Effective with the renewal cycle September 30, 2018 and beyond, the Ethics and Business Standards has become a REQUIRED component of the 14 hours. The 14 hours effective with the Sept. 30, 2018 renewal cycle has been changed as follows: • 3 hours of mandatory Core Law • 3 hours of mandatory Ethics and Business Standards • 8 hours of specialty credits The Florida Real Estate Commission (FREC) approved this change on September 27, 2017. This required all course providers of Ethics and Business Practices to resubmit their courses, to make the change from specialty credit to Ethics and Business Standards credit.
Effective with the September 30, 2018 renewal, all licensees will be required to have 3 hours of Ethics and Business Practices credit in order to renew their license. The DBPR has sent letters to all licensees who are deficient in this requirement to date as a reminder. In addition, they will need 8 hours of specialty credit and 3 hours of Core Law credit. If you took a Code of Ethics course at the Osceola County Association of REALTORS® prior to January 5, 2018, your Code of Ethics course has been applied as specialty credit. Florida Realtors Code of Ethics course will also not qualify for Ethics and Business Practices credit unless it was taken January 24, 2018 or after. We are offering a variety of course offerings to help you meet the new requirements. In the recent Professional Development survey, many of you asked for more access to online offerings. Please check “oscar.theceshop.com” for access to online education at a minimal charge. Please check our course calendar through the member portal for course offerings at the Association.
