Osceola County, FL - Residents in District 2 now have a new resource to help them stay active and develop lifelong health habits. The brand-new Buenaventura Lakes Exercise Pad at 65th Infantry Veterans Park, providing the community with free access to equipment designed for all fitness levels.
“This exercise pad not only promotes wellness but helps our community develop healthy habits that last a lifetime,” said Osceola County Commission Chairwoman Viviana Janer. “We’re committed to creating spaces that promote wellness, encourage activity, and bring our community closer together. The exercise pad features a variety of equipment, including options for stretching, strength training, and cardio exercises. Its open design makes it accessible for individuals and families looking to incorporate fitness into their daily routines.
The exercise pad has the following stations, which allow for multiple exercises: Sit-Up Bench & Back Extension, Variable press, Cardio Step Station, Balance Ball Station, Variable Row station, Gymnast rings, Assisted Ring Station, Swedish Ladder, Knee-Lift Dip Station, Variable Pull-up Station, Step Up Platforms, and Plyometric Station.

IRS iniciará temporada de impuestos de 2025 el 27 de enero

Direct File available starting Jan. 27 for taxpayers in 25 states
Washington, DC - The Internal Revenue Service announced that the nation’s 2025 tax season will start on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, and will feature expanded and enhanced tools to help taxpayers as a result of the agency’s historic modernization efforts.
The IRS expects more than 140 million individual tax returns for tax year 2024 to be filed ahead of the Tuesday, April 15 federal deadline. More than half of all tax returns are expected to be filed this year with the help of a tax professional, and the IRS urges people to use a trusted tax pro to avoid potential scams and schemes.
The 2025 tax filing season will reflect continued IRS progress to modernize and add new tools and features to help taxpayers. Since last tax season, the improvements include more access to tax account information from text and voice virtual assistants, expanded features on the IRS Individual Online Account, more access to dozens of tax forms through cell phones and tablets and expanded alerts for scams and schemes that threaten taxpayers.
The IRS has also expanded features and availability of last year’s Direct File program. This year, Direct File will be available starting Jan. 27 to taxpayers in 25 states. In addition, the IRS Free File program is now open. Available only on IRS.gov, IRS Free File Guided Tax Software provides millions of taxpayers nationwide access to free software tools offered by trusted IRS Free File partners.
The IRS is also working to continue the success of the 2023 and 2024 tax filing seasons made possi -
ble with additional resources. The past two filing seasons saw levels of service at roughly 85% and wait times averaging less than 5 minutes on the main phone lines, as well as significant increases in the number of taxpayers served at Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country. Based on the IRS’ current plan and funding levels, the agency will work to provide similar levels of performance on these key service metrics in the upcoming filing season.
“This has been a historic period of improvement for the IRS, and people will see additional tools and features to help them with filing their taxes this tax season,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “These taxpayer-focused improvements we’ve done so far are important, but they are just the beginning of what the IRS needs to do. More can be done with continued investment in the nation’s tax system.”

Osceola County's graduation rate increases by four percentage points
Osceola County, FL - The Osceola School District significantly improved its graduation rate to 88.8%, a four-percentage point increase from the 2022-2023 school year, according to data released Thursday by the Florida Department of Education. This improvement reflects gains across all public, comprehensive high schools in the district. Similarly, Florida's statewide high school graduation rate rose from 88% to 89.7%.
Several highlights for the Osceola School District include:
Zenith Accelerated Academy, Liberty High School, and Gateway High School all increased graduation rates by 10 or more percentage points.
The graduation rates of NeoCity Academy, Osceola County School for the Arts, and Professional & Technical High School maintained a 100% graduation rate.
The School District of Osceola County’s magnet and traditional comprehensive public high schools achieved a graduation rate of 91%, while Osceola charter high schools achieved a graduation rate of 71%. Both are included in our overall reported graduation rate.
Graduation rates for students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and economically disadvantaged students all showed improvement compared to last year.

Kissimmee, FL - Addition Financial Credit Union and the School District of Osceola County held a ribbon cutting on January 10, for a new student-run Addition Financial branch at Osceola High School, expanding the High School Branch partnership that provides hands-on financial experience to Central Florida students.
Addition Financial’s High School Branch Program is designed to introduce young people to financial literacy and money management skills. The credit union provides training to Osceola High School students who are accepted into the program and prepares them to fully staff and run the credit union branch, located on the Osceola High School campus.
The branch is Addition Financial’s 11th high school branch in Central Florida, and the 3rd in Osceola County.
“The two existing branches at Poinciana and St. Cloud High Schools have proven
instrumental in equipping our students with invaluable financial literacy skills and laying a strong foundation for their future careers,” said Dr. Mark Shanoff, Superintendent of the Osceola School District. “Our school district is excited that Addition Financial is expanding the program to Osceola High School as we work to ensure every student is future ready.”

Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee Utility Authority publicó su su Calendario de Seguridad Eléctrica 2025, un calendario bilingüe en inglés y español, que presenta las obras ganadoras de su 31º Concurso Anual de Arte Estudiantil.
El calendario, disponible sin costo en el centro de atención al cliente de la empresa de servicios públicos, ubicado en 1701 W. Carroll Street en Kissimmee, incluye consejos útiles sobre seguridad eléctrica e incorpora el calendario del Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola para una planificación conveniente.

Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee Utility Authority has released its 2025 Calendar of Electrical Safety, a bilingual calendar in English and Spanish, featuring the winning entries from its 31st annual student art contest.
The calendar, available free of charge at the utility’s customer service center at 1701 W. Carroll Street in Kissimmee, features helpful electrical safety tips and incorporates the Osceola County School District calendar for convenient planning.
For more than 30 years, it has been the utility’s honor to conduct the annual contest, open to Osceola County students in Kindergarten through fifth grade, as a way to promote electrical safety among students and their families.
This year, a total of 996 entries were received from 15 Osceola County elementary schools, including public, private, and charter school students.
A panel of judges selected 12 entries –one for each calendar month – which are featured in the full-color wall calendar.

Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee hosted its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Celebration on Saturday, January 11, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Kissimmee Lakefront Park Festival Lawn, located at 201 Lakeview Drive, Kissimmee, FL 34741.
This free and public event offered an opportunity for the community to come together and honor the life and enduring legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
The celebration included live musical performances by Velvet Groove, and atten-
dees were able to engage with local artisans and businesses through various community vendors. A special KUA Kids Power Zone provided youth-focused activities designed to promote fun and learning. A selection of food vendors were also available throughout the event.

Puerto Rico Day in Tallahassee 2025: Celebrating Our Heritage and Community Unity
Tallahassee, FL - Representative Johanna López and Representative Yvette Benarroch, along with María Revelles, Co-Director of La Mesa Boricua, and Rebeca Arenas, Executive Director of Legal Services Clinic, are pleased to announce the historic Puerto Rico Day in Tallahassee, taking place Monday, March 10, and Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at the Florida State Capitol.
This tradition, initiated in 2000 by former Representative Anthony Suarez, celebrates the Puerto Rican community's rich heritage and political influence. Suarez established this initiative as a tribute to Puerto Ricans' cultural and political contributions, laying the foundation for an annual celebration that continues to grow in significance. Cannabis en Florida: un resumen del año

Marijuana was a hot topic in 2024 as Floridians voted on Amendment 3, which proposed to amend Florida's constitution to legalize recreational use for people 21 and older. The measure failed during the November general election. However, as the year came to an end, the Florida Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) reported nearly 900,000 Floridians and seasonal residents had obtained medical marijuana cards.
Cannabis use has come a long way from just being associated with criminal behavior, and that is in large part due to the educational efforts central to Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) Medical Marijuana Education and Research Initiative (MMERI).
For Michelle Wilson and Anthony Washington, the MMERI team’s community engagement leaders, 2024 was filled with opportunities to educate Floridians about cannabis, Amendment 3, and related topics.
“We had a lot of questions [about Amendment 3],” says Ms. Wilson, referring to their numerous statewide engagements. As MMERI’s program manager for education, training, and community engagement, she emphasized that MMERI remains neutral and focuses on providing education, not advocacy.
Mr. Washington, MMERI’s statewide outreach coordinator, highlighted the importance of continued education about marijuana’s
effects, legality, and potential impacts. “MMERI is committed to addressing misconceptions and ensuring the public has access to factual and unbiased information,” he says.
As people sought information about medical marijuana, Ms. Wilson noted that many inquired about the “qualified conditions” listed by the state Department of Health for medical marijuana treatment. MMERI recommends the Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU), as a resource, www.knowthefactsmmj.com and its own website, www.mmeri.famu.edu for more information.
MMERI also offers an On-Demand education program with hundreds of modules on topics like marijuana’s history, its use in pharmaceuticals, and its effectiveness for conditions like glaucoma. Its monthly Conversations on Cannabis virtual forums allow viewers to interact with experts and explore key issues, including the federal government’s proposal to reclassify marijuana.
Looking to the future, MMERI aims to continue engaging communities statewide through partnerships and educational efforts.“We know that the one-on-one experience is one of the most effective ways to engage our communities,” says Ms. Wilson.

Orlando, FL – Last Friday, January 17, the swearing-in of the new boards, executive and board of directors of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida took place. The event took place in the City of Orlando City Hall Rotunda during the afternoon hours. As the Voice of the Small Business of Central Florida, the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida (PRCCCF) works to ensure the region is a vibrant and prosperous place to carryout business while developing lasting relationships.

Picar saludable: Un cambio positivo
Picar tiene mala fama, y no sin razón. Un estudio reciente mostró que algunos estadounidenses consumen el equivalente a una "cuarta comida" en calorías solo con bocadillos cada día. How to embrace the snack but avoid the 'Fourth Meal'
Snacking has a bad rap, and not without reason. Some Americans consume an entire “fourth meal” worth of calories via snacks every day, a recent study showed. But snacking can actually be an opportunity for tasty self-care — it’s all in what you chose to snack on.
Why do we snack?
Fact: If you don’t regularly consume satisfying, balanced meals, a couple of hours later you are going to be hungry. Snacks are a great way to fuel activities between meals, but we want to be sure that hunger is driving our decision to eat. Too many Americans engage in mindless or emotional eating, especially with prolonged screentime. Before you snack, think through the “why”— am I truly hungry, or are there other activities I could engage in to deal with stress, boredom or sadness?
Grab and go
Making healthy snack choices starts with the foods we choose at the grocery store. When you’re shopping, review the label. Look for foods with lower saturated fat, sodium and added sugar. These ingredients are inflammatory and can compromise your health when consumed on a regular basis. Fruits, vegetables and other fresh snacks are nutrient-dense and offer a host of health benefits.
When you choose fresh produce snacks, prep the fruits and vegetables as soon as you get home. This makes them as easy to grab as the other convenience foods in your pantry. If you’re buying in bulk, don’t sit down with the whole bag — divide it into single-serving portions to keep you on track with daily nutrition goals.
Awareness is key
Another way to increase your awareness and evaluate your eating is tracking your intake via an app or a paper food diary. Research shows the more you track — by whatever means — the more successful you will be at making better choices. Tracking puts those choices right in front of you and makes the less healthy choice harder to ignore. It’s not necessary to use a tracker forever to get benefits, but the initial results might surprise you and lead to different choices in the future.
Don’t fear the snack
Pay attention to the signals your body sends. Listening to hunger cues and subse-
quent fullness signals is a great way to stay on track with your intake while still giving the body what it needs. Avoid restricting your intake to the point of starvation; very low-calorie diets — less than 1,000 calories a day — can trigger hormonal changes that interfere with weight loss. They also result in large weight fluctuations— significant loss and regain — that damage your metabolism. If you’re trying to lose weight, talk to a dietitian about your individual calorie needs and get in tune with your body’s natural hunger signals.
One way to snack healthier is to think about your snack in the context of your overall food plan for the day. Approach your snacks as you would meal planning: Make them balanced. Each food group contains different nutrients that are essential for processes throughout the body. For example, grains provide carbohydrates that give us energy. Protein helps us maintain our muscle mass and regulate our hormones. Fruits and vegetables have countless vitamins and minerals needed for everything from eyesight to maintaining bone health.

We’re not gonna lie: If you’re used to a snack diet of sweet, salty treats high in saturated fat and added sugar, it will take time to stop feeling those cravings. It’s OK to indulge every once in a while, but make sure nutrientdense, less-processed snacks are at the top of your shopping list. Try swapping out sweet snacks with foods that are naturally sweet, like berries or dried fruit. For savory cravings, nuts are a high-protein, high-fiber food with lots of healthy, unsaturated fat.

Vuelos directos desde Corea del Sur a MCO
Condado Osceola, FL - Un “Acuerdo de Participación” firmado tiene como objetivo establecer vuelos directos entre el Aeropuerto de Incheon en Corea del Sur y el Aeropuerto Internacional de Orlando (MCO), marcando un paso significativo hacia el fomento del desarrollo empresarial internacional y la conectividad.
El acuerdo con el Aeropuerto Internacional de Incheon, uno de los aeropuertos más grandes y transitados del mundo, ha sido buscado durante mucho tiempo por la Autoridad de Aviación del Gran Orlando (GOAA), que opera el MCO.

Direct flights from South Korea to MCO
Osceola County, FL - A “Participation Agreement” signed aims to establish direct flights between South Korea’s Incheon Airport and Orlando International Airport (MCO), marking a significant step forward in fostering international business development and connectivity.
The agreement with Incheon International Airport, one of the largest and busiest airports in the world, has long been sought by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA), which operates MCO.
The effort, spearheaded by GOAA, Osceola County and a coalition of regional stakeholders, underscores the importance of linking the 500-acre NeoCity technology district to this dynamic global market with many other benefits for Central Florida.
The groundwork for this agreement was laid earlier last year during a trade mission to South Korea, led by Osceola County Commissioner Cheryl Grieb, a veteran of such international visits. The delegation included representatives from GOAA, the City of Orlando, the Orlando Economic Partnership (OEP), tourism and airline executives, among other key partners.
NeoCity and its partners stand to benefit immensely from increased connectivity with South Korea, a country renowned for its leadership in advanced technology and manufacturing. Establishing a nonstop flight route is expected to bolster business ties, attract investments, and support the region’s growing reputation as a center for technological innovation.
The agreement between Incheon International Airport, GOAA and Osceola County demonstrates the collaborative efforts of local and international stakeholders to meet the growing demand for seamless travel options between the two regions – and is yet another example of the growth in NeoCity’s ecosystem that has been accelerated by the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines program. The County and its partners will continue to work diligently to finalize the details needed to bring this project to fruition.
Incheon International opened in 2001 to share the demand for air transport in the 21st century and to serve as a hub airport in Northeast Asia. It serves the Seoul capital area and has 145 gates and four runways. Top U.S. destinations are Los Angeles and New York. Direct flights will open the area to more international visitors.
Osceola officials noted this was another connection assisted by NeoCityLinks, which facilitates and directs South Korean investment and business activity to the County.
As a global tourist destination with major theme parks like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and the Kennedy Space Center – and rapidly growing in industries such as semiconductors, AI, and aerospace, Central Florida has rich potential passenger demand, and with the opening of the new route, growth in both tourist and business travelers, as well as transfer passengers via Incheon from the Asia region, Incheon officials said.
It is estimated that there is a passenger demand of about 150,000 people between Northeast Asia and Orlando, and about 350,000 people between Northeast Asia and Florida.

Arrestan sospechoso de asesinato por disparo de fuego festivo
Kissimmee, FL - El Departamento de la Policía de Kissimmee ha identificado al sospechoso en relación con un incidente fatal de disparos de celebración que ocurrió el 1 de enero de 2025.
Tras una extensa investigación, los detectives identificaron a Carlos Manuel Tejada con fecha de nacimiento: 01/06/1981. El 17 de enero de 2025, el sospechoso fue arrestado y enfrenta Homicidio por Negligencia Culposa en la muerte de Carmen Rosa Neira Ochoa nacida el 1/4/1968.
El 1 de enero de 2025, aproximadamente a las 12:02 a.m., oficiales respondieron a la residencia ubicada en 2301 Gull Court en referencia a lo que parecía ser una víctima herida por disparos de celebración.
A su llegada, los agentes determinaron que la víctima presentaba lesiones consistentes con una herida de bala y fue trasladada inmediatamente a un hospital local, donde la víctima fue declarada fallecida.
El Departamento de la Policía de Kissimmee desea expresar su más sentido pésame a la familia y seres queridos de la víctima durante este difícil momento.

Suspect arrested in celebratory gunfire death
Kissimmee, FL - The Kissimmee Police Department has identified the suspect in connection with a fatal incident of celebratory gunfire that occurred on January 1, 2025.
Following an extensive investigation, detectives identified Carlos Manuel Tejada D.O.B.: 01/06/1981. On January 17, 2025, the suspect was arrested and is facing Manslaughter by Culpable Negligence in the death of Carmen Rosa Neira Ochoa D.O.B.: 1/4/1968.
On January 1, 2025, at approximately 12:02 a.m., officers responded to a residence located at 2301 Gull Court in reference to what appears to be a victim struck by celebratory gunfire.
Upon arrival, officers determined the victim sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and was immediately transported to a local hospital, where the victim was pronounced deceased.
The Kissimmee Police Department would like to express its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as we work to bring justice in this case.
Celebratory gunfire poses a significant threat to our community. We continue to emphasize the importance of celebrating responsibly and educating the public that shooting a gun in the air is dangerous and illegal.
If celebratory gunfire is observed or heard, it should be reported immediately to law enforcement.
We would like to acknowledge the dedicated efforts of our KPD team involved in this investigation and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for their expedited processing of evidence in this case.
The suspect is now in custody, and the case will proceed through the legal system.

Osceola County, FL - On January 8, 2025, at approximately 1606 hours, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of an armed disturbance at the Quality Inn located at 2945 Entry Point Boulevard, Kissimmee, Florida. 911 Calls reported an assailant kicking, stomping, and using a fire extinguisher to beat a victim.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered the suspect, Piero Estefano But Castillo, a Chilean national, actively striking the victim, Robert Krusinowski (10/09/1969), in the face. The victim was unresponsive and had significant trauma to his head, face, and neck. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Florida Supervisor of Elections Association announces scholarship opportunities for college students
Osceola County, FL - The Florida Supervisors of Elections Association is proud to announce an exciting scholarship opportunity aimed at supporting our next generation of leaders. In a commitment to furthering education and civic engagement, the Florida Supervisors of Elections is offering three $1,200 scholarships to college students across the state, according to Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington.
Applicants must be registered Florida voters and live in the state for at least the preceding two years. Applicants must be either a Political Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, or Journalism/Mass Communication major and be at least a junior in college. Students must be enrolled or accepted as a full-time stu -
dent in a senior college or university in Florida and have maintained at least a “C” average or above for the previous year.
The deadline to apply for a scholarship is March 7, 2025. Applications are available online at www.voteosceola. gov or may be picked up from the Osceola County Supervisor of Elections office, 2509 E. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, in Kissimmee.

Magic honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with week of volunteering
Orlando, FL - One thing that often separates teams in the NBA standings is “identity.” Teams that have an identity, which is the set of values and characteristics that define who they are as a unit, tend to win a lot more games than those that don’t.
The Orlando Magic, as we’ve seen over the last few years, have a very clear and unmistakable identity. Their mission when they step onto the court is to play harder and harder than their opponent, to be physical, relentless, have courage and do things by committee. With that framework, the Magic have weathered all the injuries to remain a contender in the East.
To honor everything Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for while also remaining community leaders, the Magic stayed true to that identity by volunteering at 14 separate community events from Jan. 13 through MLK Day.
About 250 Magic staff members volunteered each day with the following nonprofits to assist with different projects: Clean the World, Quest Camp Thunderbird, The Sharing Center, three Ronald McDonald Houses, United Against Poverty, Rescue Outreach Mission, A Gift for Teaching, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest Food Bank, Boys & Girls Club, Keep Orlando Beautiful and UCP of Central Florida.
The Magic also participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in downtown Orlando on Saturday, Jan. 18 and on Jan. 20, at the MLK Celebration in Oviedo to honor and celebrate Dr. King.
To round out the week-long service work, there was an in-game celebration for MLK Night on Jan. 19, when the Magic hosted the Denver Nuggets at the Kia Center. Magic players wore a custom Nike jersey to warm up on the court on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which was designed in collaboration with the
MLK Foundation, Martin Luther King III and the NBPA.
The Magic also paid tribute to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer’s MLK Youth Humanitarians and members of the Mayor’s MLK Commission, as well as Elliott Cohen, the night’s Magic Diversity Game Changer and a prominent student advocate for the City of Orlando’s My Brother’s Keeper program during the game.
The Magic also recognized Mayor Dyer’s MLK Youth Humanitarian Award recipients, who are Orange County middle and high school students selected by school officials to exemplify the ideals espoused by Dr. King. The mission of the Orlando Mayor’s MLK Commission is to strengthen the Orlando community by promoting Dr. King’s legacy of service, equality, justice, peace, respect and inclusion for all. For more than three decades, the MLK Commission has joined with corporate and community partners to plan and promote a variety of programs and events celebrating his life and legacy. The Commission is a partnership and represents a cross-section of civic leaders from the private, public and nonprofit sectors.

Known for its perfect acoustics, this oneof-a-kind multiform venue adapts in shape, seating and sound to host a wide range of events, making it a top destination for lovers of performing arts both on stage and in the audience.
In 2022, Steinmetz Hall was the first performing arts venue to open coming out of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. Lyle Lovett performed during the Grand Celebration alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, more than 500 performances and events have taken place inside the hall, utilizing 33 different seating configurations.
From the cork floors to the cherry millwork and the copper handrails — “the people’s metal”— every detail was meticulously designed to promote sound movement and create a welcoming and immersive experience for all guests.
