“I have many close friends and relatives who have trouble paying for textbooks”, Christian said, “My sister, for instance, is struggling a lot. She is a single mother and she is going back to school but she is struggling with the cost of her textbooks. That really inspired me to help with this initiative”.

For the past two years, Valencia’s faculty and staff has been working to cut the cost of textbooks for students through a variety of strategies. In 2013, the faculty at Valencia’s Osceola

Campus saved the campus’s students $124,000 on books and instructional materials by switching to lower-cost textbooks, including using cheaper textbooks published by faculty members, e-books, rental books or older, used textbooks that still offer sound information. The math faculty also adopted free software to generate practice problems instead of relying on a book for practice problems.

In addition, in Oct. 2014, the college began publishing the cost of textbooks on its website, so that students can see the cost of textbooks required for a class when they are considering what classes to sign up for.

UCF Offered Rare Opportunity to Watch Comet and Asteroid on Same Night Sky Orlando, FL - Most nights, stars twinkle and the moon shines bright.

There may even be a shooting star. But on Monday, Jan. 26, stargazers had a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of an asteroid and a comet on the same night.

UCF’s Robinson Observatory opened its doors to the public from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. so guests were able to view all the action. Even the cold didn’t turn people away.

At any given time there are thousands of asteroids and dozens of comets in Earth’s neighborhood of the solar system, but it is unusual for one of each to be close enough and bright enough to be seen at the same time with just a small telescope.

“It’s a pretty unique opportunity for us in Orlando,” said Yan Fernandez, director of the observatory and an associate professor of physics. “Both objects should be bright enough to see with our telescopes even with Orlando’s light pollution. The asteroid in particular is quite interesting, so much so that I and some colleagues will be using telescopes in Hawaii and in Arecibo (Puerto Rico) to study it next week as it continues its journey through our solar system.”

The asteroid that made its appearance Monday was near-Earth asteroid 2004 BL86, which has an orbit that almost intersects Earth’s. After an 11-year hiatus, BL86 safely passes Earth’s orbit.

Typically, BL86 and Earth are nowhere

Student telescopes provided an opportunity to see Jupiter, the moon, and many star constellations. near each other on their respective orbits. But on Monday BL86 passed about three times the distance of Earth to the moon, or about 750,000 miles from Earth. By astronomical standards, this distance is relatively small. BL86 also happens to be relatively large in size for a near-Earth asteroid.

Measuring between 1,312 and 3,280 feet in diameter, it was pretty bright as it passed by Earth making it visible through an eight-inch telescope.

That same evening, observers got a glimpse of C/2014 Q2 Comet Lovejoy.

Lovejoy is a long-period comet that was last seen in the inner solar system about 11,000 years ago. Like the visiting asteroid, Lovejoy will be relatively bright and close to Earth. Although Lovejoy was farther away than BL86, the comet was active enough for viewing through small telescopes.

And if comets and asteroids just aren’t your thing, Jupiter and the moon were also visible. The 20-inch telescope housed in the Robinson Observatory followed all the action and took pictures.

Los dirigentes de ambas instituciones resaltaron que Salomé Ureña de Henríquez fue una admiradora y seguidora de la trayectoria del político, pedagogo y escritor puertorriqueño Eugenio María de Hostos, quien le sirvió de guía para fundar en Santo Domingo la primera Escuela Normal para mujeres denominada “Instituto de Señoritas” donde se formaron las primeras maestras dominicanas, razones que han considerado los miembros de la comisión permanente de la 3era Feria Internacional del Libro Dominicano para tener al hermano país de Puerto Rico como invitado especial.

Esta 3era Feria Internacional del Libro Dominicano en la Ciudad de Orlando, coincide con la conmemoración de los 118 años del fallecimiento de la poetisa homenajeada, razón agregada que inspira a OLAS y a la PRFAA para presentar este evento cultural a su memoria, en el que aspiramos convocar a toda la diáspora hispana interesada en la cultura y el arte.

St. Cloud - Arte / Art Se aceptan solicitudes desde febrero para Arte en Lugares Públicos de St. Cloud St. Cloud, FL – Artistas y aficionados del arte locales están invitados a participar en el tercer programa anual de Arte en Lugares Públicos de St. Cloud (St. Cloud Art in Public Places o SCAPP, por sus siglas en inglés).

Los artistas podrán completar una aplicación para tener sus obras de arte originales exhibidas aleatoriamente en la alcaldía de St. Cloud.

Artists will be able to complete an application to have their original works of art randomly displayed on easels in St. Cloud City Hall.

“The SCAPP program is for professional artists, amateur artists, and those who feel they create artwork that may of interest to others,” said City of St. Cloud Public Information Officer Sandra Ramirez, who manages St. Cloud Mayor Rebecca Borders’ SCAPP Program.

“It could be a painting, a drawing, or a photo; just original artwork that the artist would like to have on display for the public to view and

Las piezas están ahí, pero no parecen encajar Por Amanda Ludick Orlando, FL - ¿Ya se terminó? Eso es lo que la mayoría de nosotros se pregunta en este punto para la temporada de la NBA. Sé que puse muy altas expectativas en la

organización del Orlando Magic y estoy recibiendo decepciones noche tras noche. Mientras la temporada sigue adelante, parece que el equipo está tratando de forzarlos a unirse y no está funcionando.

Luego de revisar las anotaciones finales después de cada partido y mirar realmente quien cada jugador es, hace muy buen sentido el por qué el equipo no está funcionando. Todavía no hay una línea fuerte de partida en los cinco.

The pieces are there but they don’t seem to fit

By Amanda Ludick Orlando, FL - Is it over yet? That’s what most of us are wondering at this point for the NBA season. I know I put very high expectations on this Orlando Magic organization and am getting let down night after night. As the seasons continues on, it looks like the team is trying to force them together and it is not working.

After reviewing the box scores after each game and really looking at who each player is, it makes pretty good sense why the team isn’t working. There is still no strong starting five. The Magic have one consistent player on the team. One. Nik Vucevic is consistently improving his strengths, focusing more on his areas of weakness, and puts out an All-Star performance night after night. Double doubles are a regular thing for the big man. He is one of the best rebounders in the league and prefers the simple jump shot from the paint rather than the grand slam. He is not flashy by a long shot but he plays the game extremely well. He deserves an All-Star recognition. He did not make the starting five, which should come as no surprise, but to snub him from the reserve list would be a great over-sight by the coaches who vote the players in. Elfrid Peyton and Victor Oladipo have been named to the Rising Stars Challenge. Oladipo has also made the dunk contest.

Last Friday in New York, the Orlando Magic took on the Knicks who happen to have one of the worst records in the league (yes, even worse than the Magic). Vucevic put up 34 points and 18 rebounds in his 38 minutes of play.

Elfrid Peyton is becoming another asset for Orlando. The rookie point guard dished out 11 dimes and had 9 points for Orlando. And while Victor Oladipo, 15, and Channing Frye, 14, also scored in the double digits, it wasn’t enough to defeat the Knicks. The 113 to 106 loss has everyone voicing their opinions of the lack of Magic defense. It’s not their offense since they have been scoring over 100 each game recently, but the lack of defense is losing the games for them. Their fast-paced offense has improved tremendously over the past three weeks. Rookie forward, Aaron Gordon, has returned and helped keep that pace going. But their focus now needs to be on defense.

In the 99 to 106 loss against Indiana at home, Coach Jacque Vaughn moved Aaron Gordon to a starting role with hopes of re-focusing the team on the defensive end but it did not happen.

Orlando had a seven point lead going into the fourth but lost it. The Magic scored 17 points the entire fourth quarter while Indiana had 31. When you talk about finishing a game and what it takes to hold on to a lead, the Magic still don’t have it.

I could recap the 94 to 103 loss in Memphis but you’ve heard it all before.

As the focus becomes more and more on whether or not Vaughn will have a job much longer, I can’t help but wonder whose head is on the chopping block.

Rumors are beginning with trade talks that the Magic are shopping some players around in return for first round picks. Only three weeks remain until the trade deadline. If the team continues on this path, then I expect GM Rob Hennigan to make some changes.

Sheriff & Police News Realizan arresto por el asesinado cerca del restaurante El Cibuco Kissimmee, FL - Detectives de la policía de Kissimmee realizaron un arresto por el asesinato del 18 de enero de 2015 de Juan Carlos Quiles. Durante el curso de la investigación, se identificó una persona de interés. El sospechoso, Jayson Omar Castillo-Cáceres, de 28 años de edad, fue contactado por los detectives el 22 de enero de 2015, pero no cooperó con la investigación. CastilloCáceres fue identificado positivamente por los testigos como la persona que disparó y mató a Juan Carlos Quiles.

Deputies arrest gang members on felony warrants Osceola County – On January 22, Osceola County Sheriff's deputies served a search warrant at 209 Applewood Court in Buenaventura Lakes, after receiving information regarding criminal activity at the residence.

The 6-month investigation, conducted by the Gang Unit, led deputies to the residence that served as a central location for documented gang members.

Neighbors reported the gang members would make threats and many neighbors were afraid to report crimes for fear of repercussions.

Deputies arrested documented gang members Hector Luis FigueroaZayas, Juan Benjamin Rivera and Giovanny Maldonado. In addition, Liana Urika Picou was also arrested.

Later during the day, Rodolfo Jonathan Perez, a fourth documented gang member was arrested in

Phoenix, Arizona by the DEA after fleeing the area. He is being charged with Directing Activities of a Criminal Gang. After a search of the residence at 209 Applewood Court, deputies took into evidence 4lbs. of marijuana, body armor, 3 guns and drug paraphernalia.

In addition, Animal Control took into custody 9 pitbulls that were located in the residence. The investigation is on-going with additional charges pending.

Jayson Omar Castillo-Caceres

Arrest made on murder near El Cibuco Restaurant Kissimmee, FL - Kissimmee police detectives made an arrest in the January 18, 2015 murder of Juan Carlos Quiles. During the course of the investigation, a person of interest was identified. That suspect, 28-year-old Jayson Omar Castillo-Caceres, was contacted by detectives on January 22, 2015, but did not cooperate with the

investigation. Castillo-Caceres was positively identified by witnesses as the person who shot and killed Juan Carlos Quiles. The preliminary investigation indicates there was an altercation between the suspect and Quiles which escalated to the gunfire. One gunshot was fired which struck and killed Quiles.

Jayson Castillo-Caceres was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder, Attempted Murder and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. He was transported to the Osceola County Jail where he is held on no bond.

Detectives arrested suspect for Circle K and Boost Mobile armed robberies Osceola County – Osceola County Sheriff's detectives arrested Raynaldo Machado and charged him with two counts of Armed Robbery, Violation of Probation, Resisting Without Violence and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer. Machado is responsible for the armed robberies that occurred on January 15 at Circle K located at 2688 Simpson Road and on

January 18 at Boost Mobile located at 580 E. Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee. Detectives identified him as a suspect and on January 21 he was brought him in for questioning. Machado cooperated with the investigation and, based on his statements, was arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail.
