The Eye of the Tiger is Back and Ready for Another Great Year!

CHARITY - UNITY - FRATERNITY PATRIOTISM 1

STATE DEPUTY’S NEWS & NOTES Robert F. Collins, Jr., State Deputy Brother Knights, A little about membership… Here we go again and again Ohio! Great Job! We finished the month of June with an intake of 265 new members and an intake of 11.78%. It placed us 3rd in the June Race to the Finish and 4th for the three month membership contest at 28.40%. What a fantastic finish to a great Fraternal Year. The membership numbers for the end of the month and Fraternal Year were outstanding. Here is a recap of how we stand as a Jurisdiction. Ohio finished the Fraternal Year with a gross intake of 2,304 new members for 102.40% of quota. It placed us 34th of 74 Jurisdictions Order-wide and third of the Division 1 States. Ohio finished the Fraternal Year with a net gain (intake less suspensions and withdrawals) of 1,589 members for 101.46% of quota. It placed us 39th of the 74 Jurisdictions Order-wide and again third of the Division 1 States. The great news is that we are growing. We finished the Fraternal Year at +263 members. It places us 6th in the Order of 74 Jurisdictions and 1st among Division 1 States. On July 1st Ohio had 58,002 members. Ohio also made our New Council Development Quota. We went the extra mile and started seven finishing at 117% of Supreme Quota. The only variable in the Supreme Membership Plan is our Star Council Quota. Ohio has a quota of 60 Star Councils for the Fraternal Year. Those numbers will take some time to be verified by the Supreme Council. State Membership Director Nick Gresko and the General Insurance Agents of Ohio have assured me that we have exceeded this number and by a reasonable margin. I cannot thank everyone enough for making this happen.

Now that we are back on track in membership recruitment please continue to keep that recruitment spirit foremost of all your priorities this next Fraternal Year. Keep scheduling those 1st Degrees. Every District Deputy is required to schedule and conduct a 1st Degree in his district every month. Our Degree Page on the website should be “Busting’ Out” and overflowing with degree information. We will need each of those degrees to be productive so everyone may help us reach our goal of 2,250 new members. A thought on Degree Work: I have attended some degree work throughout Ohio and need to address one observation. An Admission, Formation, or Knighthood Degree is no place for a Stranger, Candidate or Brother Knight in t-shirts and shorts. Please have the respect to the Order and the Ceremonials to dress appropriately. Golf or polo shirts with Dockers type slacks are a minimum dress that should be worn to any one attending these degrees. Please inform all attending degrees to dress the same. State Council Finances: State per capita billings were sent to all Financial Secretaries of record in early June and the per capita dues amounts are due now. If you have not paid your State per capita please make arrangements to do so as soon as possible. A special thank goes out to all of the councils who have already mailed in their check. I have authorized all ($178,000) of the Super Cash Bonanza Rebate checks to be written and sent to Financial Secretary of record. Look for your Council’s (Continued on page 3)

checks to arrive sometime in the next week or so. Thank you to everyone who worked to make this program a huge success. If you have not seen in your Measure Up check for the April - May 2016 Measure Up Campaign please do so as soon as possible. The Measure Up Grant Checks should begin going back to the councils sometime next month just after the close of the Supreme Convention. Town Hall Meetings begin next month: “Town Hall” meetings throughout Ohio will begin in August with the following meeting dates, times, and locations. The meetings are open form and we'll talk about whatever might be on your mind at evening. The meetings have been posted on the State Website Calendar. Anyone from anywhere is welcome at any time to come to any one of the meetings. Meetings are open to all 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Degree members, one day as a Knight of Columbus or 80 years as a Knight of Columbus. All meetings will begin at 7 p.m. and last for about 90 minutes or so. Come and bring an open mind, your thoughts, and ideas and help each other become a better Knight. “Town Hall” Meetings scheduled to date are as follows:

Football Frenzy Fund Raiser: The Football Frenzy Campaign has changed greatly this year. This year we have made the program an even bigger contest and have added some new incentives. One incentive for sure is a credit on your State Per Capita Tax if your council meets or exceeds its sales quota. No ticket should be left on the table. I’m positive that 58,000 Knights should be able to sell 36,000 tickets. The Fraternal Planner: One last thought: Please get in the habit of using your Fraternal Leader Success Planner. Every District Deputy has received 5 planners for every one of his councils. Each month in a calendar format important dates and deadlines are listed. The opposing page has a list of reminder notes and expected accomplishments for the current month and the month to come. It is a great tool for success. Take every advantage of this Fraternal Planning guide. If you have not received your fraternal Planner please contact your District Deputy immediately. One last thought: Our theme “Through Him, With Him, In Him” is taken to task at every sacrifice of the mass. Take this theme to heart. Give up everything you do for the honor and glory of God and our potential for success just becomes immeasurable. God Bless Brothers, have a good month. Bob Collins, State Deputy

REFLECTIONS FROM OUR STATE CHAPLAIN Father Edward Janoch, State Chaplain July 1st is the beginning of the 2016-2017 Fraternal Year. We have much to be thankful for from the successes of the past Fraternal Year, and to lift up those areas where we fell short in accomplishing our goal. The Mother of Good Counsel provided much counsel to our Order in the State of Ohio. Sometimes success can breed indifference for once we have met a goal; we are prone to relax to celebrate in the glory of the achievement. This cannot be done. This should never be done, especially in matters of faith and morals. Until our last breath we should always be moving forward, towards that final goal; which is Heaven. For the Knights of Columbus in Ohio, we met a major goal. We know we can do it, so let us do it again. This can show that what happened was not a fluke or some anomaly, but who we are: better Catholics, better Husbands, better Fathers doing all Through Him, With Him, In Him. At the time of this writing the Silver Rose has enter the Great State of Ohio in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. The Silver Rose will then travel to the Diocese of Columbus, to the Diocese of Toledo, to the Diocese of Cleveland, to the Diocese of Youngstown, to the Diocese of Steubenville. Please make every effort to support this Supreme Council Program and to have as many people as possible attend the places where the Silver Rose will be stopping in the six dioceses of Ohio. Last year 1,483 people were present to pray for LIFE. May this number increase as every day we hear more and more news about the evils of the culture of Death and the total disregard for the sanctity of LIFE.

As stated above, the Mother of Good Counsel continues to be our Patroness for the 2016-2017 Fraternal Year in Ohio. At the District Deputy meeting we prayed the pray of the Mother of Good Counsel and I ask that all Councils in Ohio will pray this prayer, especially when a decision needs to be made that requires substantial counsel and good advice. She has helped us as a State Council and will surely help any Council in Ohio. I have provided the Prayer of the Mother of Good Counsel in this Newsletter. Mother of Good Counsel, Pray for Us. This year I will be providing information from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is formatted into a question and answer format. I will give a question or two and its answer to matters of faith that are relevant for this year. Here are two questions for this month. Vivat Jesus! Fr. Edward J. Janoch, Worthy State Chaplain

Question 363. What is Freedom? Freedom is the power given by God to act or not to act, to do this or to do that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own responsibility. Freedom characterizes properly human acts. The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. Freedom attains its proper perfection when it is directed toward God, the highest good and our beatitude. Freedom implies also the possibility of choosing between good and evil. The choice of evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to the slavery of sin. [See CCC #1730-1733 and 1743-1744]

Question 365. Why does everyone have a right to exercise freedom? The right to the exercise of freedom belongs to everyone because it is inseparable from his or her dignity as a human person. Therefore this right must always be respected, especially in moral and religious matters, and it must be recognized and protected by civil authority within the limits of the common good and a just public order. [See CCC #1738, 1747] 4

Mother of Good Counsel Prayer By Venerable Pope Pius XII

O Holy Virgin, to whose feet we are led by our anxious uncertainty in our search for and attainment of what is true and good, invoking you by the sweet title of Mother of Good Counsel, we beseech you to come to our assistance, when, along the road of this life, the darkness of error and of evil conspires towards our ruin by leading our minds and our hearts astray. O Seat of Wisdom and Star of the Sea, enlighten the doubtful and the erring, that they be not seduced by the false appearances of good; render them steadfast in the face of the hostile and corrupting influences of passion and of sin. O Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from your Divine Son a great love of virtue, and, in the hour of uncertainty and trial, the strength to embrace the way that leads to our salvation. If your hand sustains us, we shall walk unmolested along the path indicated to us by the life and words of Jesus, our Redeemer; and having followed freely and securely, even in the midst of this world's strife, the Sun of Truth and Justice under your maternal Star, we shall come to the enjoyment of full and eternal peace with you in the haven of salvation. Amen.

Intentions of Our Holy Father July 2016 Universal: Indigenous Peoples That indigenous peoples, whose identity and very existence are threatened, will be shown due respect. Evangelization: Latin America and the Caribbean That the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean, by means of her mission to the continent, may announce the Gospel with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

Saint of the Month St. Junipero Serra July 1 Miguel Jose Serra was born on the island of Majorca on November 24, 1713, and took the name of Junipero when in 1730, he entered the Franciscan Order. Ordained in 1737, he taught philosophy and theology at the University of Padua until 1749. At the age of thirty-seven, he landed in Mexico City on January 1, 1750, and spent the rest of his life working for the conversion of the peoples of the New World. In 1768, Father Serra took over the missions of the Jesuits (who had been wrongly expelled by the government) in the Mexican province of Lower California and Upper California (modern day California). An indefatigable worker, Serra was in large part responsible for the foundation and spread of the Church on the West Coast of the United States when it was still mission territory. He founded twenty-one missions and converted thousands of Indians. The converts were taught sound methods of agriculture, cattle raising, and arts and crafts. Junipero was a dedicated religious and missionary. He was imbued with a penitential spirit and practiced austerity in sleep, eating, and other activities. On August 28, 1784, worn out by his apostolic labors, Father Serra was called to his eternal rest. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988. His statue, representing the state of California, is in National Statuary Hall. His feast day is July 1. 5

Membership Mission #13 Worthy Brother Knights of Ohio: Inspector Membership here. What a great year we all had in 2016. Those final results will be coming out shortly. But, we cannot rest because our Worthy State Deputy, Robert Collins, is expecting us to repeat. So here we go again... We are called to grow and deepen our faith; to serve as witnesses to our faith in our families, at work and in our daily lives. Our mission is to bring Fr. McGivney’s dream to life by continuing the growth of the order, which is key to its long term survival. It is incumbent on all of us as Knights to work to ensure the organization grows and prospers. It is absolutely needed in today’s world.

Click to View July’s Video Incentive

The Inspector has some incentives for you. The flyer and the video are above for you to review. Summer is here with the heat, hot dogs, pie and good times. In celebration of July, our mission is clear - to make the Knights of Columbus available to ALL Catholic men. So, as you gather around this weekend and throughout the month with friends and family, watching the firework displays, remember that we can be firecrackers to those men and their families that are searching for something more. 7

RETENTION Michael Jordon (East) / Bill Wirtz (West)

While our goal is not to lose any member from the Order we have to realize that for some the Knights of Columbus is not for them. We have to give brothers credit for joining the Order and giving it a try. That being said, how do we manage our council roster to avoid big swings in membership? This document is intended to provide you some suggestions to apply within your council and to develop over time to minimize the loss of members. Steps for success The key to retention is activation. Once we have initiated a new member what steps are being done to get them involved and to realize the benefits from their membership? Below are some steps you as a council can

take:      

Involve the sponsor of the member. Have them maintain communications with them. Invite them to the meetings and events. Have the Grand Knight write a letter of welcoming to the new member. Include his contact information and encourage them to get involved. Invite the member to contact the GK should the new member have any questions about their membership. When new brothers or brothers we haven’t seen for a while come to a council event/meeting, officers and membership should make a special effort to say hello, welcome them, and introduce them to

 

others. The membership chairman should communicate and make personal invitations to 1st degree members to take their major degrees as they are scheduled in your area. Review your roster, at a minimum, quarterly. Which of the members have you not seen at church or around the council activities?  Through the leadership of the membership chairman make assignments to officers to contact these members and see how they are doing. Find out what is going on in their lives and invite them to an upcoming meeting or council event.  Contact the sponsor and ask him to reach out and engage with the brother.

Remember, it took an invitation, sometimes repeatedly, to get a prospect to join the Knights of Columbus. Continue to invite them to participate in the council after they have been initiated. Managing retention within your council is an important responsibility and requires work. Neglecting this important duty will result in an accumulation of brothers who have not paid their dues over time and a list of brothers you quickly lose touch with. Spending a little time throughout the fraternal year to make an effort to communicate to and activate the members will reap the benefits of a healthy council. It is not healthy for the council or for the Order to drop 1525+ members at a time because we haven’t managed retention matters effectively.

Effective retention and activation policies minimize this risk and makes for a more fruitful and enjoyable membership experience within the council. These policies naturally feed into membership growth as others see that members are encouraged to be a part of the brotherhood and are a welcomed addition to the council.

GENERAL PROGRAM Robert Walsh, General Program Director “Now, we take up this journey… A journey of fraternity, of love, of trust.” This quote is from Pope Francis, and it offers a way to describe how we approach our programing. As a journey we plan our programs throughout the year, with our Fraternal Brothers and their families, to encourage commitment to our Community, Church, and our Youth. The trust comes when everybody sees and participates in your work.

This is also a good time to review all the programs for your Council Members new and longtime ones. Find out what your new member is interested in and get them involved. The requirements to receive the Through Him, With Him and In Him Awards are complete five programs within the six program areas, or fully complete a Supreme Program to receive 100 points, in Membership do five programs and receive 200 points, and in Retention complete three programs and receive 120 points. Do all of the Administration requirements and receive 165 points, for a total of 1085 points. At the time of this article there were 68 Star Councils and five more in review. Congratulations to these Councils for achieving this Supreme Award. Any council can achieve this award by filling out the SP7 form, making your Membership, and Insurance quotas. Use your Fraternal Leader Success Planner to keep track of the programs planned and completed. By using the planner you can see how well your council is proceeding

throughout the year. Some dates to remember for July, Form #185 list of officers due as of 7/1, Soccer Challenge Kits need to be ordered, along with Church Drive Kits for October. August reminders include Form #365 Program Personal due 8-1, #1295 Council Audit due 8/15. Family Week is 8/10- 8/16. How are you going to recognize the Families in your Council? Supreme has the Family of the Month Program, this is one way to recognize a family every month. Congratulation to the family of Nathan and Andrea Ankerman of Delphos Council #1362 for being the April winner and the Bradley and Carrie Blumberg Family of Marysville Council #5534 for being the May winner. We had a great year, and I am looking for an even better one. I encourage every Council to report at least one program this year in the “Through Him, With Him, In Him” program. Keep up the good work your Council is doing. CHURCH

COMMUNITY

Jeff Kiliany

Tom Forsthoefel

Building the Domestic Church Supreme Council is asking our Councils and Members to adopt new methods suited for what our Catholic Community needs today and in the future. It is asking us to devote greater efforts to the needs and future of our parishes. Priorities of our councils should be: 1. To promote the “Spiritual Development” and “Catholic Fraternity” of our members and all men of the Parish 2. Become integrated with the Parish and Engage the entire Parish in our activities 3. Support Spiritual Development and Charitable works within the Parish 4. Evangelize through our “Good Works”

VOCATIONS Joe Mackos ROUNDTABLE Once again our goal set by Supreme for OHIO is 100 roundtables. Supreme Council has sent this out to all state deputies stating that all Roundtable Forms need to be sent to; councilgrowth@kofc.org or faxed to (203) 752-4108 (Attn: Steve) to ensure that it will be processed for this fraternal year. DO NOT SEND TO MEMBERSHIP RECORDS.

July marks the start of a new fraternal year for the Great State of Ohio within the Knights of Columbus. Our Worthy State Deputy, Robert Collins put together a strong plan for his two years in office as our State Deputy. We are at the half way point and many of the councils throughout the state maxed out their programs for the past fraternal year from July 2015 through June 2016. However this is no time to sit back on our laurels and reminisce on what we accomplished this past year. Once again we need to grab the bull by the horns and plunge forward to backup what we just accomplished as not being a fluke but what is to be expected within the Knights of Columbus for the State of Ohio. For those councils that came close but did not complete all of your programs the past year you can regroup for this next year and help the state meet its goals for membership and completing the programs laid out for your individual council. For the Community Programs of which I am responsible for reviewing, your council can accomplish the goals for the programs in place. All you have to do is participate in 5 of the 11 programs within the booklet and report them on the state website. Many of the councils performed activities with the 4th of July long weekend whether you were involved with a parade, held a council picnic or honored our Vets both near and far for the sacrifices they have made for our individual freedom. My own council will be hosting a family picnic along with our installation of officers for the next fraternal year.

CULTURE OF LIFE Brett Gissel

As we begin the fraternal year, we need to continue our efforts in saving the unborn from unnatural death. We must also step up our efforts to keep abortion from even being considered as an option. Activities like the Ultrasound Initiative (45), 40 Days For Life (47), and the March For Life (48) bring awareness to the life ending decisions being made on the children being aborted. Through ultrasounds women see the child they are carrying. Nearly 90% of the time they see the child as a living person and choose life. Brining ultrasounds into qualified pregnancy care centers do save lives. To date the 40 Days For Life (40daysforlife.com) program has documented 11,796 lives saved. The next campaign runs from September 28 – November 6. Aside from participation in the vigils at the clinics, members can also participate in this campaign by praying and fasting during these 40 days. The March For Life (marchforlife.org) is one of the largest marches in Washington, DC every year. Through this event and local rallies for life at the same time, hundreds of thousands of people show support for overturning the decision that allows for legalized abortion.

support to women that choose life over an abortion. Contact a local pregnancy care center to find out how your councils can help. Another way to keep abortion from being considered is foundational development of a Culture Of Life. Promote Teen Chastity (52) is a way to build the foundation of a Culture Of Life. Through such programming our youth (not just girls, but boys too!) as well as their families learn to respect the dignity of the human person and how to live according to God’s plan. Remember to work with your pastor on bringing a chastity program to your parishes. I can provide resources to you if you need them. In building up this culture, our actions will preach the Gospel and others will follow.

Respect Life Month is October (usccb.org/about/pro-lifeactivities/respect-lifeprogram). Any Culture Of Life activities that you do to celebrate Respect Life Month and do not fit into other programs can be submitted through a Council Choice activity (53/54). Let us also remember to pray for the unborn and aborted children. The Order Wide Day Of The Unborn Child (49) will be on March 25, 2017. This is a day when we unite in prayer for a return of respect and protection of the unborn children. The National Day Of Remembrance For Aborted Children (50) will be on September 10, 2016 (abortionmemorials.com). Hold a vigil for children that were aborted and let others see that we not only advocate for the life of the unborn, but we also remember them like we do for any other person.

Our ability to speak up on issues is being threatened. Through Stand Up For Religious Freedom (46) activities we inform our elected officials and others of these threats and that we need to defend religious liberty. Regardless of our ability to speak on this issue, we can let our actions speak for the unborn. Some choose abortion due to lack of resources. Through a Council Choice activity (53/54) you might consider providing 11

INSURANCE James Valent, General Agent

Strive for Star Council As we welcome a new Fraternal Year, we congratulate those gentlemen who have graciously accepted a leadership position in the Knights of Columbus; especially Grand Knights and District Deputies. The coming year will be full of triumphs and challenges, and I know you’ll meet these with the strength and faithfulness of those before you. I’m also sure that you have a list of goals and objectives that you intend to accomplish this year, building upon the success of previous years. You have our assurance, as devoted Agents of the Knights of Columbus, that we are eager to help. Among the many goals, is the attainment of the Star Council and Star District award - the most prestigious awards the Order offers at the Council and District level. While we’re committed to helping on the insurance side, we’re also very glad to help on the membership side as

well. If you know an eligible Catholic man who might be interested in joining the Order, as many of us do, he’s probably waiting to be asked. We can help you, either by approaching or visiting him ourselves, or by sharing some information with you on what we have learned about recruiting members to our Order. As always, we are at your service. Let’s get an early start on attaining these goals and objectives, so critical to our growth here in the Great State of Ohio. God Bless

MATCHING FUNDS Mark Siracusa, State Advocate MATCHING FUNDS I have chosen “Providing needs for Catholic Education” as the theme of the 2016 Matching Funds Program. Your council’s contribution to the fund will assist in strengthening the Catholic Education efforts in every Catholic school, in every religious program, and in every RCIA program of your diocese

state will contribute as generously as they have in past years.

The Matching Funds Program will run from September 1, 2016 through November 15, 2016. The Ohio Charity Foundation, Inc. of the Ohio State Council is matching the first $25,000 donated to this year’s program.

SILVER ROSE The Silver Rose is going through our state. Make sure you make contact with both the persons who you are to receive from and pass on to.

More information will be sent in a letter to your Grand Knight in August.

My goal for the 2016 Matching Funds Program is $68,000 combined with a 90% participation of our Ohio councils. I would hope that all councils across this great 14

Welcome to the new fraternal year. As the State Forms Chairman I would like to call to your attention the importance of Supreme Forms submittal and the impact these forms have on the success for your council in the upcoming Fraternal Year. As always communication is the key to success in any endeavor. Forms submitted to Supreme Council and copies to the State Council are a vital component of this communication process. Administration Forms are a requirement and their timing of submittal is critical for Star council and Special Program awards in the individual State Programs. Administration Forms should be submitted to the proper Supreme address and copies whether paper or electronic should be submitted to the State Forms Chairman based on the Table below: Please utilize the Forms Checklist provided on page 30 of the General Program book. This checklist is an excellent tool that will help you succeed this next fraternal year. Copies should be sent to the State Forms Chairman at the indicated address below: Richard Royle 13942 Olde Orchard Rd. Strongsville, Ohio 44136-8342 216-210-5247 kofcroyle@gmail.com 16

CONSCIENCE PROTECTION ACT

As a Jurisdiction we ended the year with a net/net gain (less suspensions, withdrawals, deaths, and transfers) in membership of +263. We finished the year at 58,001 members across Ohio.

Your action is needed to urge Congress to protect the rights of healthcare professionals, Catholic hospitals, and all people of goodwill who object to participating in abortion.

As a Jurisdiction we also exceeded out New Council Development Quota of 6 by starting 7 new Councils. As a Jurisdiction we also exceeded our Star Council Quota of 60 Star Council by having 68 Councils achieve the Star Council Award. The Supreme Knight's Circle of Honor Award! I am proud of each and every one of you. Thank you for all you do. God Bless, Bob Collins, State Deputy

The Conscience Protection Act of 2016 (HR 4828) gives these conscientious objectors a means for protecting their conscience rights through legal action. A vote on this critical legislation in the House of Representatives is imminent. Contact your member of Congress today and ask them to support this important legislation.

Immediate action is necessary. Right now, Catholic schools, churches, and other faith-based organizations are being forced to cover abortion—even late-term abortion—in their health plans. Right now, Catholic health professionals are being forced to provide and participate in abortions. Contact your elected representatives today and ask them to support the Conscience Protection Act. Thank you for doing your part to protect conscience rights and to build a Culture of Life. Fraternally, Carl A. Anderson, Supreme Knight 17
