REFLECTIONS FROM OUR STATE CHAPLAIN Father Edward Janoch, State Chaplain NASCAR! You pr obably did not know that I am a fan of NASCAR. We all have some hobby or interest that would make someone scratch their head and say, “I didn’t see that coming.” Yet as I was reflecting on my next vacation to Michigan International Speedway, in Brooklyn, Michigan, I began to think about our earthly journey. I can see a parallel between a NASCAR race and our Faith Journey. The day of a NASCAR race is only the last part of a race weekend. There are practice runs where the race cars are put to the test to see how well and how fast they can run. Alterations are made to the car so it can be the best one on the track. We prepare ourselves for our faith journey by learning and practicing our Faith. Our parents, godparents, family members, ordained clergy and religious brothers and sisters, and religion teachers help us to make the Faith our own. How good a driver is on Race Day depends on how well the driver was prepared. How good we are in our Faith Journey also depends on how well we were prepared. When the green flag is waved, the race begins. Depending on the track, race laps will vary. Most races are between 150 laps to 300 laps on a track that is one-halfmile per lap to two miles per laps. There is great excitement when the race begins. All the preparations for the race are put to the test. Everyone’s Faith Journey will be different. The length will depend on how long God wants us to be alive here on Earth. When our Faith Journey begins, there is a similar excitement. Our religious preparations are going to be put to the test. After a number of laps the race can become monotonous. Lap after lap, going at high speeds and making only left turns [road courses also have right turns], fatigue can set in and miscalculations by some drivers can cause some costly errors to happen that can develop into accidents, causing some drivers to not finish the race. Daily life can take a toll on our Faith Journey. The monotonous duties of life seem to never end. It seems like each day is the same. Days begin to merge into weeks and weeks into months and months into years. Before we know it,

life is going by fast. We can become fatigued in our Faith Journey following Christ and can make costly miscalculations, which we call sin. Sin can cause come people to not finish their Faith Journey. We also can question whether it is worth all this time, talent, and treasurer to practice the Faith. It seems like our defense on our moral issues dealing with sanctity of Marriage, Sex, Life and our defense of Religious Liberty and Freedom; never ends. A number of our Saints questioned, is this Life in Christ all worth it. However, they continued the journey and persevered through the trials of life. In racing, drivers make occasional pit-stops to replace tires, make minor adjustments to the car, and fill-up their gas tanks. We also need to take time to make “pit-stops” for our Faith Journey. These are times when we pray, attend Mass and receive the Sacraments, and attend retreats and renewals. As the laps wind down, drivers begin to realize that the end of the race in near. The prize is at hand. When the green flag is waved, two laps remain. When the white flag is waved, one lap remains. When the checker flag is waved, the race is over and the trophy is awarded. As we become older, we being to take notice and reflect on what we have done in our earthly life, but also we become aware that there is life after death; eternal life. This is the prize that we have been working for these many years on our Faith Journey. I hope this reflection has been helpful, but with any analogy, they do not always fit as snuggly as one would like. A NASCAR race is for one day while our Faith Journey is for many years. If we need some assurance that this Faith Journey is worth it, just reflect on the lives of the Saints during this month of August. Almost every day in August there is a celebration of a Saint. 2

Mother of Good Counsel Prayer By Venerable Pope Pius XII

O Holy Virgin, to whose feet we are led by our anxious uncertainty in our search for and attainment of what is true and good, invoking you by the sweet title of Mother of Good Counsel, we beseech you to come to our assistance, when, along the road of this life, the darkness of error and of evil conspires towards our ruin by leading our minds and our hearts astray. O Seat of Wisdom and Star of the Sea, enlighten the doubtful and the erring, that they be not seduced by the false appearances of good; render them steadfast in the face of the hostile and corrupting influences of passion and of sin. O Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from your Divine Son a great love of virtue, and, in the hour of uncertainty and trial, the strength to embrace the way that leads to our salvation. If your hand sustains us, we shall walk unmolested along the path indicated to us by the life and words of Jesus, our Redeemer; and having followed freely and securely, even in the midst of this world's strife, the Sun of Truth and Justice under your maternal Star, we shall come to the enjoyment of full and eternal peace with you in the haven of salvation. Amen.

Question 25. How does man respond to God who reveals himself? Sustained by divine grace, we respond to God with the obedience of faith, which means the full surrender of ourselves to God and the acceptance of his truth insofar as it is guaranteed by the One who is Truth itself. [See CCC #142 -143]

Living

This year I will be taking Matters of Faith and Catholic Knowledge from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is formatted into a question and answer format. I will give a question or two and its answer to matters of faith that are relevant for this year. Here are three questions for this month.

Question 27. What does it mean in practice for a person to believe in God? It means to adhere to God himself, entrusting oneself to him and giving assent to all the truths which God has revealed because God is Truth. It means to believe in one God in three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit [See CCC #150-152, 176-178] the

That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty, and love of neighbor.

Question 28. What are the characteristics of faith? Faith is the supernatural virtue which is necessary for salvation. It is a free gift of God and is accessible to all who humbly seek it. The act of faith is a human act, that is, and act of the intellect of a person—prompted by the will moved by God—who freely assents to divine truth. Faith is also certain because it is founded on the Word of God; it works “through charity” (Galatians 5:6); and it continually grows through listening to the Word of God and through prayer. It is, even now, a foretaste of the joys of heaven. [See CCC #153-165, 179-180, 183-184] 3

MEMBERSHIP Nick Gresko, State Membership Director

CONDUCTING A SUCCESSFUL MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN IT’S NOT TOO EARLY TO THINK ABOUT THE "THE OCTOBER CHURCH DRIVE" What is a Church Drive? The Knights of Columbus designates time each year when every council is encouraged to conduct a Church drive. All councils are being asked to conduct a church drive in each parish they serve in October during Columbus Day weekend (October 10-11) or any weekend in October. The church drive may be the most effective way of presenting our message to fellow parishioners as well as to recruit new members. If you have not ordered your church drive materials from Supreme now is the time!!! This is a time to tell our story of faith in action with emphasis on fraternal care and charitable works. Prepare yourselves: 

 

  

Meet with the pastor and inform him of your intentions and secure his permission. Place an insert in your parish bulletin/s notifying the parishioners of the upcoming drive. Order recruitment brochures, posters and flyers from the Supreme Council Supply Department (Allow 4 – 5 weeks for delivery) Develop or update the council’s brochure and make adequate copies. Prepare an effective and concise pulpit talk to be given within the time frame allowed. Contact and schedule members to assist with recruitment activity and do not forget to invite your field agent to attend. Identify teams to call on prospects or schedule an information night, and then schedule at least two first degree opportunities for the new candidates.

During the scheduled weekend  Set up information tables, place posters and flyers at all entrances of the Church  Personally hand out prospect cards to everyone as they enter the church or have cards and pencils available in each pew of the church.  Have a council member give a presentation to the parishioners and ASK them to join the Knights. Ask the Mass celebrant your pastor to give his words of endorsement.  Schedule plenty of brother Knights to hand our material and mingle with the crowd  Schedule brothers to work, do not rely on those who happen to show up for Mass that day. Hand out material, mix with the parishioners and collect prospect cards. Follow-up after the weekend drive  Within 48 hours make personal contact with every prospect.  Set up an appointment to meet with him and his spouse at their home or inform them of the scheduled information night.  Offer transportation and refreshments if holding an information night. Information night  Be organized, have an adequate number of brochures, explain benefits of being a member, share council activities, have field agent speak about fraternal benefits, have chaplain/pastor give his endorsement, show film such as “Experience of a Lifetime”, call on dignitaries for comments.  After program, assist each prospect with the completion of a Form #100. Inform them of First Degree dates. Have snack and refreshments available upon conclusion of your meeting.  Offer transportation and refreshments if holding an information night.

4

The First Degree  Conduct a First Degree no later than two weeks after your informational meeting.  Offer transportation.  Prepare degree certificates.  Inform them of the next meeting date and time, upcoming activities and how they can be involved with your council.

Membership Mission #14 Worthy Brother Knights of Ohio: August is heating up as we hit those dawg days of summer and the Inspector has some sizzling incentives to help. Watch the video below for your mission. If you choose to accept, you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts with new members full of enthusiasm and energy. Which diocese will be on top…Which District Deputy will climb the mountain…How high can we go?

Form 450 is like GOLD!!! Council’s no longer fill out the Form 450C. There is only a Form 450 now and it is the responsibility of the District Deputy to fill this out. District Deputies please make sure within 3-5 days of holding a degree in your District the Form 450 is turned in. This is extremely important because this allows us to track if Supreme actually processed your Form 100’s! If your councils took the time to bring in a new member the State Membership Team wants to make sure these councils get credit for this hard work and effort. These should be filled in on line now at the State Website and then it is automatically sent to who it needs to go to. Take advantage of this!!!

Everyone is back in now so let us put the pedal to the metal and rock this world!

Form 100’s Within 3-5 days of a degree any Form 100’s should be emailed to the Supreme Council at membershiprecords@kofc.org and to the State Membership Director at greskon@sbcglobal.net and also include your diocesan membership director on those emails. Supreme is able to process the Form 100 much quicker this way and you have a receipt that they were sent in your sent mail. Plus this saves your council the cost of a stamp every time new members are brought in. Also, please make sure that every part of this Form 100 is filled out or the Form 100 will not be processed 5

INSURANCE Chad Osterholt, General Agent

Only Having Insurance “Through Work” Doesn’t Work Do you know anyone whose life or career has drastically changed during these years of economic downturn? It’s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could change employers, or even lose your job. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary. But only having “through work” insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family’s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short.

In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive. While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I’ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know exactly where you stand. Chad Osterholt, FIC General Agent
