HIS FAITH

Keeping the Faith

Father McGivney not only lived a life devoted to the Catholic faith; he also focused all his spiritual, mental and physical energies on helping others persevere and grow in that faith, and he guarded against whatever might diminish the practice of Catholicism.

faith among widows and orphans forced to live in state institutions or with non-Catholic relatives or adoptive families.

Third, the Knights would champion the full rights of American citizenship for Catholics. This, too, would support the Church, since ensuring equal rights for Catholics would help limit the social or civil pressure on them to abandon their faith.

Practical Catholics

For Father McGivney’s newly formed Knights, protecting the faith of Catholics was the prime concern, and this quickly took three forms.

First, the Knights would serve as an antidote to those secret societies that lured Catholic men away from their faith by offering financial benefits.

Second, the Order’s insurance program would help keep Catholic families together when a breadwinner died; this would also help prevent a loss of

The one requirement of membership in the Knights of Columbus is that a man be a “practical Catholic” in union with the Holy See. What does the term “practical Catholic” mean?

Faith for Father McGivney and his Knights was not simply knowing the

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED MICHAEL MCGIVNEY

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen

catechism, important as that is. It was putting into practice the Great Commandment of Jesus: To love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself. True to the parable of the Good Samaritan, love of neighbor does not stop at the church door. It goes out into the streets, the highways and byways, to encounter those on the margins of society – who were often immigrant Catholics in Father McGivney’s day – and bring them practical charity and fraternal love.

A “practical Catholic” has a love of home, family and church, where faith is nurtured. Yet his faith leads him into the world, even a world suffused with anti-Catholic sentiment, in the spirit of the Good Samaritan. He is called to bind up the wounds of the sick and abandoned, to provide for their temporal needs, to support the faith of Catholics and pass on the faith to inquirers, and to live a life of prayer and virtue, with love of God and neighbor.

FAITH FORMATION

The first nineteen days of the month fall during the season of Lent which is represented by the liturgical color violet or purple a symbol of penance, mortification and the sorrow of a contrite heart.

April 20th is Easter Sunday and the beginning of the Easter season. The liturgical color is white the color of light, a symbol of joy, purity and innocence (absolute or restored).

Cor Schedule and Content

First Six Months (Example)

There are many ways that Cor can be implemented within the parish. The example below provides you with some thoughts on what could be done. When implementing Cor, one should take into consideration the pastor and his requirements and requests, but also the dynamics of the parish itself. Getting men to open up about their faith is a challenging task and an atmosphere of comfort, ease, and of course nonjudgemental helps the Holy Spirit work His magic.

Frequency: 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month @ 8 am

Content: This is a proposed structure to show how simple and flexible the structure can be using resources and materials readily available at www.kofc.org/cor. This example shows planning in advance, however, if the demands of the men attending require different content, then adapt accordingly. This is to emphasize that the formation and prayer content is supplementary to the needs of the fraternal brotherhood and not necessarily a set formal curriculum.

The mission of Cor is to refocus Catholic men on Jesus Christ and to form and strengthen them in faith and virtue through a brotherhood committed to prayer, formation, and fraternity.

Join us for a discussion and Q&A on Cor April 28, 29, or 30, 2025, via Zoom. To register, click HERE or visit the Cleveland Diocesan Page on the state website.

For more information on Cor, please the Cor home page by clicking HERE. You can also contact Ty Tyjewski, Diocesan EFF Coordinator, Jim Maslach, State Treasurer, or your District Deputy to assist.

STATE OFFICER REPORT

Here we are the start of the fourth quarter. The score is close and you are not sure whether or not you can push over the finish line. I know … it sounds like a normal Browns game, but we have reached that point in the fraternal year where we need to start to look at where you are with respect to the state and Supreme.

Recapping a very busy March, we started off with the Diocesan Free Throw Championships in Elyria. The contestants shot to their best and the winners advanced to the state championships. Our Diocesan Champions did a great job down in Columbus but fell just short of winning any of the age categories. We are all so proud of the effort that energy that they brought. Next year cannot come soon enough.

Thank you to Daniel Slattery and Larry Sutter from the Spencer Agency for attending the Bringing America Back to Life Conference. For those of you that did not know, this conference is held annual in Independence by the Cleveland Right-To-Life group and brings people and groups from around the state to discuss issues and concerns around Life. The Knights continue here in the diocese and throughout Ohio to respect life at all stages.

lookout for those notifications or emails from Supreme and the State. We want to try to get the eMembers into a council sooner than later. Sprinkle in throughout the month council meetings, fish fries, Stations of the Cross, and so on. Before you know it, April is here.

Certainly, each council should be looking at where they stand. The state honorees of the year submissions are due NOW! If you want to have your program count for the state awards,

either 10 or 14 people in attendance, and submit the Columbian Award Application. If you want to find out where your council is on the path, check with your District Deputy or contact me. We will be glad to help you out.

Super Cash Bonanza is in full swing. Make sure that you get those tickets into the Ca$h Cave so Ca$hman and his team can count and record them all. The Cleveland Diocese is the top diocese thanks to all your efforts in selling these tickets and it certainly helps are charitable outreach. If you need Ca$hman to pick up tickets from you, call him on at 440785-9838. I can relay the message to him.

Finally, the state convention is coming up. Your council should attend as the convention is in our backyard. Please make sure that your council has two (2) delegates in attendance usually the GK and a PGK. There are volunteer opportunities for your councils and members. I will be sending out that form later this first week of April once the District Deputies and State Staff have signed up.

Thank you again to Daniel and Larry, along with the boss, John, for attending the Catholic Men’s Fellowship of Northeast Ohio’s annual conference. We had a lot of good traffic by our booth as well as great conversation with many brother Knights. The guys were also recruited some new members. So, be on the

you have to have them submitted by April 15th. Check out the state website to see where your council is at with programs and MAX out the program this year!

There is still some time to work toward Supreme’s Star Council Award. Remember, you need to meet or exceed your Supreme growth goal, submit forms (185, 365, 1728), be safe compliant as a council, attend two (2) fraternal benefit events AND have

Lent will come to a close here in a couple of weeks opening the door for the Triduum and Easter Seasons! Let us continue to prepare our hearts for His resurrection and be that light of Christ that shines so brightly here along the north coast. Kathy and I pray that your Easter Season is full of joy..

GROWTH REPORT

As we approach the three quarters mark of the fraternal year, growth in the Cleveland Diocese has been consistent. If you look at the chart below, you see that there was a low point (below our trend) from January and February. However, you all did fantastic in March and now we are back above our trend line. In March, we brought in 46 members and there are still some more due to the recruiting that took place at the CMFNEO Conference on March 22. There is still plenty of time for councils to recruit and push for Star Council.

71% of our councils have recruited at least one (1) new member this year. Now is the time to look at your RCIA candidates. These new members to the church are on fire with the Holy Spirit and are looking for opportunities to grow in faith and service. Consider giving them the gift of membership in the Knights of Columbus.

There are incentives from both, Supreme and State, to help encourage you and your council to continue to recruit. Check out the Council Health page XX of this newsletter to see where your council needs to concentrate going into the last quarter.

If you need any help with recruiting, exemplifications, or general Q&A, feel free to call your DD, Mike Incorvati, Teran Taggart, or Jim Maslach.

Upcoming Exemplification Schedule

Below is the current Exemplification schedule for the Cleveland Diocese. Please register your Exemplification by visiting www.kofcohio.org. If you would like to schedule the Diocesan Exemp Team, please contact Jim Maslach at 440-7859838 or via email at kofcjkm@gmail.com

DISTRICT & DIOCESAN LEADERS

Greetings. Hard to believe we are half way through Lent. Which means we have little over 90 days until the end of the Fraternal year. There are several items to complete before the end of the Fraternal year. If a Council has not yet provided their Affiliated Membership Initiative list to their District Deputy, clock is ticking, please ensure your councils have provided this list no later than April 30th. This is important because the May 1st roster will freeze your Councils for next years Super Cash Bonanza and Football Crazr goals.

State Council Program form will be offline, unavailable after April 15th and won't be brought back online until after July 1st for the next Fraternal year. Although the State Program will be closed, Councils should continue to host Council programs to qualify for the McGivney award. Also, if you have a Council that has completed enough programs to complete the SP-7 or

Calling All Past or Soon-ToBe Past Grand Knights!

Leadership in the Knights of Columbus can be stressful trying to get members to participate, running council meetings, or dealing with Supreme or State. However, in the end, it is one of the most rewarding positions. Your experience in dealing with all those situations, and I assume others, give you a unique skill set that I would like to cultivate.

I am looking for that next set of leaders with those unique skills to take on the

McGivney award, there is no restriction when to submit the form to Supreme. Encourage any Council to complete and submit their SP-7 when ready.

I speak from experience as my Council has already received notification of qualifying for the Columbian Award. By submitting this form early, it will allow the Council to address and resubmit a corrected SP-7 if necessary.

April 15th is also final day to submit Council donations for Support Our Seminarians. Please see State Website for details.

Councils should also be drafting next year's slate of officers. Council elections may begin on May 1st and should close June 15th. Encourage your Council's to host their elections sooner so that the next council administration may begin on July 1st. This will also allow planning of Council Officer Installation.

This is a nice segue, on April 1st within Member Management under "Council Administration", the "Next Fraternal Year" option is now available for both Chosen Officers (form 185)

and Service Program Personnel (form 365) . Please encourage your Councils Financial Secretary or Grand Knight to choose "load current year" and select save. Next Fraternal Year entries may be changed at any time. This will prevent a delay for newly elected officers accessing Member Management on July 1st.

Reminder, Council Visitation reports should be submitted within 7 days of your visit and expense reports should be submitted monthly within a week of the end of the month. Without those visitation reports, State and Supreme, does not know the status of Councils nor the health of that Council. You should visit your Councils (at a minimum) of once per quarter. There are a few councils who have not been visited since last year or missing visitation reports.

Finally, if you have not met with the Diocesan State Officer, please schedule a meeting to discuss your District and the up-coming Fraternal Year under the new incoming Administration.

Thank you, Teran

KNIGHTS IN ACTION

Ultrasound Initiative Continues in 2025!

Ultrasound machines make a difference. They save lives! The statistics vary, but when a pregnant woman sees the ultrasound image of her baby, 80 – 90% choose life.

There were 5,877 abortions in Cuyahoga County in 2022. The Ultrasound Initiative is more important now than ever before.

The Ultrasound Initiative is going strong at St Ladislas Council 16373. The council has placed 5 ultrasound machines thus far, and are working on 2 more machines for 2024. A huge key to that quantity of machines placed to date, valued at $206,209, is the phenomenal support by numerous councils in the Cleveland Diocese. These councils include: 16376, 310, 15056, 3269, 2643, 15614 and 7970. What a great example of charity and unity! We are grateful for the support of this life saving program.

2025 is a new year and we cannot let up in the fight for life. St Lad’s Council 16373 still needs your help to accelerate the installation of these ultrasound machines in the Cleveland Diocese. To save lives.

Please contact Bud Tetzlaff at budtetzlaff@aol.com or 216-533-9754 to help out.
