IN SERVICE TO ONE. IN SERVICE TO ALL MONTHLY PUBLICATION FOR THE OHIO STATE COUNCIL

YEAR 2 MONTH 5 NOVEMBER 2016

Robert F. Collins, Jr State Deputy

Brother Knights, We have the ability to reach every Brother Knight in the state with this monthly electronic newsletter, the “Voice of the Spirit”. If you are a Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, or District Deputy receiving this publication you may obtain a list of email from your council or councils and forward them to State Media Chairman Brother James Maslach at his email address; kofcdd19@gmail.com. Brother Jim will place you on the email list and then be able to receive this publication along with other important and informative memos from the State Council. A little about membership: Brother Knights what a great rebound from several previous months of recruiting. It seemed like

we pulled out all stops in October and rose to the occasion and had a great month of new member intake. Because of your efforts Ohio won the Supreme Membership Contest edging out Texas, California, and Florida on the last day. We finished with 9.02% intake and a full half percent ahead of the field. Our cash award will fund some additional incentives in Ohio this month. See State Membership Director Nick Gresko’s article for details. Gross Intake (New Member Recruitment) We are currently 37th of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a 22.89% of intake goal. To date we have recruited but 515 new members in the first four months of the Fraternal Year. This places us 4th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions,

but only 3% behind them. To put this into perspective we should be at 34% of gross intake or 782 new members. We will have to continue to step up our recruiting pace to get back on track in November. Net Intake (New Member Recruitment less Suspensions and Withdrawals) We are currently 30th of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a 22.98% of intake goal. To date we have retained but 362 of those new members in the first four months of the Fraternal Year. This places us 4th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions but again just several percentage points behind. Again to put this into perspective we should be at 34% of our net goal or 544 members retained. Net/Net Intake (New Member Recruitment and Out of State Transfers) We are currently 57th of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a 74% of intake goal. To date we haven’t retained any of the new members in the first four months of the Fraternal Year and lost and have lost an additional 74 members. This again places us 4th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions. Again to put this into perspective we should be at 25% of our net/net goal or +25 members retained. We still have another 8 months to recover our losses. With a good membership plan and an aggressive approach to church drives and new council development we can get back on track. It does however raise the bar each month now to try to rundown and catch up with our goals.

Keep scheduling those 1st Degrees. Every District Deputy is required to schedule and conduct a 1st Degree in his district every month. Our Degree Page on the State Website should be “Busting’ Out” and overflowing with degree information. Right now I see 30 Admission Degrees scheduled in the month of November and 20 on the books for December. This tells me still need a little work setting up Admissions Degrees in the majority of our districts. This is not the practice as laid out and requested of me by the Supreme Knight. We also will need each of those degrees to be productive so everyone may help us reach our goal of 2,250 new members. Resignations: Due to per sonal issues I am announcing the resignations of Assistant Membership Director Kevin Cornelius, Youngstown Diocesan Coordinator Donald Prall, and

Youngstown Diocesan Membership Chairman David Bender. We sincerely thank them for their efforts during this administration. A thought on Degree Work: I have attended some degree work throughout Ohio and need to address one observation. An Admission, Formation, or Knighthood Degree is no place for a Stranger, Candidate or Brother Knight in t-shirts and shorts. Please have the respect to the Order and the Ceremonials to dress appropriately. Golf or polo shirts with Dockers type slacks are a minimum dress that should be worn to any one attending these degrees. Please inform all attending degrees to dress the same. Council contributions to the “Voice of the Spirit”: One featur e of this monthly publication needs are events, programs, and human interest events from the local Councils throughout Ohio. Any Council wanting to submit an article of interest to the “Voice of the Spirit” for publication each month should send a finished article and photo if applicable to PSD David Helmstetter. Brother Dave will then edit and decide which articles are to be include in each month’s issue. Brother Dave’s email address is: dhelmstetter@bright.net. Articles can also be submitted through our state website. Log in and go under Publications and Resources to find the link. State Council Finances: Any late receipts of the 2016 Measure Up Campaign or State Per Capita will have their respective checks returned to them in the month of December. Town Hall Meetings: “Town Hall” meetings throughout Ohio have begun with the following meeting dates, times, and locations. The meetings are open form and we may talk about whatever might be on

your mind at evening. The meetings have been posted on the State Website Calendar. Anyone from anywhere is welcome at any time to come to any one of the meetings. Meetings are open to all 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Degree members, one day as a Knight of Columbus or 80 years as a Knight of Columbus. All meetings will begin at 7 p.m. and last for about 90 minutes or so. Come and bring an open mind, your thoughts, and ideas and help each other become a better Knight. We had great success in the Toledo Diocese in October numbering better than 22 attendees at each of the five meetings. I hope the trend continues and possibly improves in the Youngstown and Cleveland Diocese this month. “Town Hall” Meetings scheduled to date are as follows:    

Thursday, Nov 10, Louisville Tuesday, Nov 29, Canfield Wednesday, Nov 30, Painesville Wednesday, December 7, Columbus

If you get a “Returned” program, simply “Edit” the program and make the corrections that the Program Director is asking for and click “Update Program Listing”. When you use the State Program Website to enter your programs, sometimes a mistake is made when selecting the program group or program activity or sometimes a program is returned as a duplicate program by the Director.

and to make this easier for the Council’s to manage their program information, there is now a “Closed” status that is available (see images below). This is available ONLY if the program is in the “Pending” or “Returned” status. REFLECTIONS FROM OUR STATE CHAPFather Edward Janoch, State Chaplain

Christ is the Head of the Body, the Church. This picture is of one of the stained glass windows of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Parma, Ohio. This window reflects what we will be celebrating during this month of November.

the Souls, those of our family and those throughout time that the Church As Militant may have forgotten who they are, but the Church Triumphant knows and prays for too.

On 20 November we celebrate the At the beginning of the month on 1 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, November we celebrate All Saints King of the Universe [Christ the Day; the Church Triumphant. This is King]. This is the day that the the day that we remember the “holy ones” of God. This day is the day to reflect upon the canonized saints of the Church, but also on all the “holy ones” that are in heaven that we do not know are there. We may have family members that are a part of the Church Triumphant and will only realize this when it is our turn, hopefully, to become a part of this multitude of the “holy ones.” Let us pray to All the Saints to help us, as the Church Militant to become the Church Triumphant.

Right after All Saints Day we celebrate All Souls Day on 2 November. This is the day that we remember the Church Suffering. Not as much the Church suffering physical pain, but the Church that suffers from not being fully associated with Christ and with the Church Triumphant. The waiting for this release from Purgatory to Heaven causes these “holy souls” to suffer from their desire for complete union with God. Again, the Church Militant remembers and prays for All

Church Triumphant, Suffering and Militant remembers Christ the Head of the Church as her Universal King. As the stained glass window shows, Christ is in the center surrounded by the entire Church members. How blessed we are to have Christ as our King.

Knights of Columbus, we honor the Saints, we pray for the Holy Souls, and we build up the Church on Earth. Our councils need to hold Memorial Masses for the brother Knights and family members who have died. Hold a Memorial Mass at your Council’s parish or at one of the parishes that a nonparish based council provides assistance to. If your council is new, within the last five or so years and you have not had any brother Knight die, I know that one new council lost a member one month after the council was formed, remember family members of a brother Knight who died this past year. Whatever the situation, have a Memorial Mass. If you cannot find a time to hold a Memorial Mass, then sacrifice one of the meetings scheduled for November and have a Memorial Mass on that night. One council is offering up their social meeting night to hold a Memorial Mass and will have refreshments after the Mass; so it still becomes a “social” meeting after the Mass. I need to mention something on a personal matter. I received a letter 4

from The Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon. Bishop of Cleveland, dated Monday, 24 October 2017 on Tuesday, 25 October 2017. The first paragraph states: After proper consultation and with the recommendation of the Clergy Personnel Board, I hereby transfer you from Parochial Vicar of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Parma, and appoint you Parochial Vicar of St. Mary Parish in Chardon where The Reverend Daniel P. Redmond is Pastor. This four year assignment

becomes effective 1 January 2017 when you are asked to report for duty to the St. Mary Parish Rectory.

that I will not be able to assist the St. Charles Borromeo Council #16137, in Parma, Ohio as I would like to. This council holds a special place in my heart since I helped to establish this council here at St. Charles Borromeo Parish on 11 February 2015. At the ordination of 20 May 2000, I pledge obedience to The Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla and to his successors and so I go to where I am needed, with the help of God.

This pastoral transfer does not affect the Ohio State Council. My duties as the State Chaplain are not affected by this transfer. I have already informed my new pastor of the two weekends that I need to fulfill my duties as your State Chaplain and the new pastor is very flexible with my requests. He is a brother Knight. I will not be away Vivat Jesus! from a Knights of Columbus council for at my new assignment, St. Mary Fr. Edward J. Janoch Council #15942, in Chardon, Ohio, is Worthy State Chaplain right there, waiting for me to arrive. My only sorrow comes from the fact

This year I will be taking Matters of Faith and Catholic Knowledge from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is formatted into a question and answer format. I will give a question or two and its answer to matters of faith that are relevant for this month. Here are four questions for this month. Question 194. What is the meaning of the “communion of saints”? This expression indicates first of all the common sharing of all the members of the Church in holy things (sancta): the faith, the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, the charisms, and the other spiritual gifts. At the root of this communion is love which “does not seek its own interests” (I Corinthians 13:5) but leads the faithful to “ hold everything in common (A cts 4:32), even to put one’s own material goods at the service of the most poor. [See CCC #946-953, 960]

Question 195. What else does “the communion of saints” mean?

Question 210. What is purgatory?

Question 211. How can we help the souls being purified in purgatory?

Purgatory is the state of those who die in God’s friendship, assured of their eternal salvation, but who still have need of purification to enter into the happiness of heaven. [See CCC #1030-1031, 1054]

This expression also refers to the communion between holy persons (sancti); that is, between those who by grace are united to the dead and risen Christ. Some are pilgrims on the earth; others, having passed from this life, are undergoing purification and are helped also by our prayers. Others already enjoy the glory of God and intercede for us. All of these together form in Christ one family, the Church, to the praise and glory of the Trinity. [See CCC #954-959, 961-962]

Because of the communion of saints, the faithful who are still pilgrims on earth are able to help the souls in purgatory by offering prayers in suffrage for them, especially the Eucharistic sacrifice. They also help them by almsgiving, indulgences and works of penance. [See CCC #1032] 5

Mother of Good Counsel Prayer By Venerable Pope Pius XII

O Holy Virgin, to whose feet we are led by our anxious uncertainty in our search for and attainment of what is true and good, invoking you by the sweet title of Mother of Good Counsel, we beseech you to come to our assistance, when, along the road of this life, the darkness of error and of evil conspires towards our ruin by leading our minds and our hearts astray. O Seat of Wisdom and Star of the Sea, enlighten the doubtful and the erring, that they be not seduced by the false appearances of good; render them steadfast in the face of the hostile and corrupting influences of passion and of sin. O Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from your Divine Son a great love of virtue, and, in the hour of uncertainty and trial, the strength to embrace the way that leads to our salvation. If your hand sustains us, we shall walk unmolested along the path indicated to us by the life and words of Jesus, our Redeemer; and having followed freely and securely, even in the midst of this world's strife, the Sun of Truth and Justice under your maternal Star, we shall come to the enjoyment of full and eternal peace with you in the haven of salvation. Amen.

Prayer After an Election God of all nations, Father of the human family, we give you thanks for the freedom we exercise and the many blessings of democracy we enjoy in these United States of America. We ask for your protection and guidance for all who devote themselves to the common good, working for justice and peace at home and around the world. We lift up all our duly elected leaders and public servants, those who will serve us as president, as legislators and judges, those in the military and law enforcement. Heal us from our differences and unite us, O Lord, with a common purpose, dedication, and commitment to achieve liberty and justice in the years ahead for all people, and especially those who are most vulnerable in our midst. Amen. The "Prayer After an Election"by Cardinal Adam Maida, Archbishop of Detroit, is used with permission.

HOLY FATHER’S PRAYER INTENTIONS Offered in Solidarity with Pope Francis November 2016 Universal: Countries Receiving Refugees That the countries which take in a great number of displaced persons and refugees may find support for their efforts which show solidarity. Evangelization: Collaboration of Priests and Laity That within parishes, priests and lay people may collaborate in service to the community without giving in to the temptation of discouragement.

Form 100 and Form 450 a Moral and Financial Responsibility Worthy District Deputies and Worthy Financial Secretaries and Grand Knights, We are asking all District Deputies to send the Form 450 after a degree to the people stated in the chart below within 3-7 days of the Admission’s Degree. If done on the Supreme website this will automatically do this for you. This is the only way we can track if Supreme is getting all of the Form 100’s. Worthy Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries you need to get the Form 100’s turned in within 3-7 days after a degree. If you did not know that if this does not happen your council has a $1000 potential financial risk. Recall that these Form 100’s are a contract and it is the council’s responsibility to get them to supreme immediately. God forbid something happens to one of those new members and

their family knows of the accidental death benefit of $1000 and wishes to collect. Guess what, that $1000 will not be paid by Supreme and it certainly will not be paid by the State Council. That financial responsibility will be on the local council because they did not perform their responsibility to get those Form 100’s in. Remember we are Our Brothers Keeper and we have a moral and financial responsibility to make sure this happens! This is why getting the Form 450 as a District Deputy and then as a Financial Secretary and Grand Knight that the Form 100’s get turned in immediately. DVD Admissions Degree Worthy Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries it is extremely important that you are talking to your District Deputy and that he knows when you are planning these because he needs to submit a Form 450 and this is not happening all the time right now. Please get this information to your District Deputy so that he can do what he needs to do and to insure you get credit for the work that you are doing when it comes to degrees. COUNCILS Because we want every council to win this prize and display it in your council hall, recruit at least one new member between October 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016 and receive an unframed portrait of St. Theresa of Calcutta. RECRUITERS Recruit 3 new or former members between October 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016 and receive 3,000 additional VIP points. For every member recruited over the 3 the recruiter will receive an additional 1,500 points. DISTRICT DEPUTIES By December 31, 2016, if all your active councils have recruited at least one new member, you will receive an unframed portrait of St. Theresa of Calcutta.

Form 100’s Within 3-5 days of a degree any Form 100’s should be emailed to the Supreme Council at membershiprecords@kofc.org and to the State Membership Director at greskon@sbcglobal.net and also include your diocesan membership director on those emails. Supreme is able to process the Form 100 much quicker this way and you have a receipt that they were sent in your sent mail. Plus this saves your council the cost of a stamp every time new members are brought in. Also, please make sure that every part of this Form 100 is filled out or the Form 100 will not be processed Form 450 is like GOLD!!! Council’s no longer fill out the Form 450C. There is only a Form 450 now and it is the responsibility of the District Deputy to fill this out. District Deputies please make sure within 3-5 days of holding a degree in your District the Form 450 is turned in. This is extremely important because this allows us to track if Supreme actually processed your Form 100’s! If your councils took the time to bring in a new member the State Membership Team wants to make sure these councils get credit for this hard work and effort. These should be filled in on line now at the State Website and then it is automatically sent to who it needs to go to. Take advantage of this!!!

GENERAL PROGRAM Robert Walsh, General Program Director We just finished the first four months of the year, how are your programs coming along? Are you completing the activities that were planned, and then reporting to the State web site? Are you getting all your members involved including the new ones? This would be a good time to review the planned activities for the next couple of months. Show your members the progress your council is making in programming and membership. CHURCH Jeff Kiliany “Year of Mercy” Pope Francis gave the Church and the world a great gift in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy that began almost a year ago on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This was also the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the second Vatican Council. The Year of Mercy will conclude on the Solemnity of Christ the King, November 20th, 2016. CHANGES TO COLUMBIAN AWARD Supreme Council, Knights of Columbus Knights of Columbus councils have always responded to the most urgent needs of the Church, particularly through charitable and social outreach. In order to support the evangelization of family life today, each council must be even more fully integrated with our Catholic parishes. As the world’s largest Catholic fraternal and family organization, we have a responsibility to dedicate our time, talent and resources to ensuring that our parishes are beacons of the new evangelization and that our families are supported and strengthened by our activities. In order to highlight the importance of this new initiative and its impact on our mission, the Supreme Council is announcing changes to the Columbian Award effective immediately. In order to earn the Columbian Award, councils need to meet the following qualifications: 1. Submit the Service Program Personnel Report (#365) 2. Submit the Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity (#1728). Councils instituted after November 1 do not have to meet this requirement. 3. Annually conduct and report at least four (4) programs in each of the six categories of the Surge with Service Program AND at least four (4) of those programs need to be designated as “Domestic Church” programs.
