YEAR 2 MONTH 9 MARCH 2017
2015 -2017 1
STATE DEPUTY Brother Knights, A little about membership… Brothers we have rebounded a bit but looks like our Membership Plan went on vacation again in February. It wasn’t a total loss but not exactly what we were looking for at the State Council. It will take some undoing but I still believe in you Brother Knights throughout Ohio to come to the task and get the job done.
Our efforts statewide in Ohio placed us in a tie for second place with New York in the February Supreme Council Membership Contest being bested by our good friends up north. We finished with 7.15% intake and our best intake in several months. This should earn us a check for $750.00 in Supreme Council bonus money. We will have several Membership Incentives working this month. The current month’s incentive, the Traveling State Deputy incentive, and the first leg of the Special Spring Bishop’s Incentive for March and April that I have previewed at all of the Super Cash Bonanza Road Show stops. Be sure your Council Membership Director is fully aware of the contest and what is at stake for a good two months intake in new members. Please see the State Membership Director Nick Gresko’s article for details or look for his Membership Eblasts earlier this month.
Gross Intake - February 28th numbers (New Member Recruitment) We are currently 46th of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a 48.09% of intake goal. To date we have recruited but 1082 new members in the first eight months of the Fraternal Year. This places us 6th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions, but only about 4% behind them. To put this into perspective we should be at 68% of gross intake or 1530 new members. We will have to continue to step up our recruiting pace
to get back on track in January. In real numbers we will need in Ohio 296 new members per month over the next 4 months to retain our Circle of Honor status. With just a little extra effort I know that together we can make this happen. Net Intake (New Member Recruitment less Suspensions and Withdrawals) We are currently 39th of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a 49.09% of intake goal. To date we have retained but 786 of those new members in the first eight months of the Fraternal Year. This places us 3rd among the Division 1 Jurisdictions but again just about six percentage points behind. Again to put this into perspective we should be at 68% of our net goal or 1071 members retained. Net/Net Intake (New Member Recruitment less Suspensions, Withdrawals and Out of State Transfers) We are currently 59th of 74 Jurisdictions in the Order with a -130% of intake goal. To date we haven’t retained any of the new members in the first eight months of the Fraternal Year and have lost an additional 130 members. Again most of losses this month were due to member deaths. There was an unusual amount of deaths recorded again in February. This again places us 4th among the Division 1 Jurisdictions. Again to put this into perspective we should be at 68% of our net/net goal or +68 members retained. Again on the positive side we still have another 4 months to recover our losses. With a good membership plan and an aggressive approach to church drives and new council development we can get back on track. It does however raise the bar each month now to try to rundown and catch up with our goals. Think back a few weeks ago; the New England Patriots didn’t win the Super Bowl by tossing “Hail Mary” passes downfield. They won because they
stuck to their game plan. Yes they fell behind with what seemed to be a no win situation, but no one paniced. They just went back to work executing their game plan to the max. What’s our game plan? Parish Drives, Open Houses, Insurance Nights, 1 on 1 recruiting, 2 on 1 recruiting... the same plan we have had since 1882. It works. Get back to business, back to the game plan, and back to success.
Keep scheduling those 1st Degrees. Every District Deputy is required to schedule and conduct a 1st Degree in his district every month. Our Degree Page on the State Website should be “Busting’ Out” and overflowing with degree information. Right now I see a good number of Admission Degrees scheduled in the month of March; I should see 83. This tells me still need a little work setting up Admissions Degrees in the majority of our districts. Successful Councils, Districts, and Diocese have a good practice of frequent degree work, and I have the records to prove it. This is not the practice as laid out and requested of me rather by the Supreme Knight. We also will need each of those degrees to be productive so everyone may help us reach our goal of 2,250 new members. A thought on Degree Work: I have attended some degree work throughout Ohio and need to address one observation. An Admission, (Continued on page 3)

STATE CHAPLAIN
Reflections from Our Worthy State Chaplain Father Edward J. Janoch For by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure, so that, more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity, and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn, they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters. PREFACE I OF LENT Roman Missal, Third Edition Another year, another Lent. How wonderful that the Bride of Christ offer us this time to repent and believe in the Gospel. As Preface I tells us, this is a time of joy as we return to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Most of us are walking the path that leads to eternal life, even though there are times when we fall off the path and do our own will, i.e. sin. We are blessed to have this yearly forty day retreat to remind us and to help us to return to the path to eternal life, or to not fall off the path; which is temptation. In the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is formatted in a question and answer format explaining the faith and teachings in the Catechism of the Catholic Church we read: 106. What do we learn from the temptation of Jesus in the desert? The temptation of Jesus in the desert recapitulate the temptation of Adam in Paradise and the temptations of Israel in the desert. Satan tempts Jesus in regard to his obedience to the mission given him by the Father. Christ, the new Adam, resists and his victory proclaims that of his passion which is the supreme obedience of his filial love. The Church unites herself to this mystery in a special way in the liturgical season of Lent. [Catechism of the Catholic Church 538-540, 566]. Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, USCCB Publishing, Washington, DC, 2006, p 34.
As adults, we should give up sins, not food. We can give up coffee, chocolate and sweets, and meat, but yet we still curse and swear, gossip, lie and cheat, steal and covet, and commit mortal sins. We need to repent for our sins and strive to not commit them anymore. What helps us to repent and believe in the Gospel is to perform the penitential acts of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We become concerned for another person and it helps us to not have idle time that can lead us to entertain sin. The Compendium tells us: 301. What forms does penance take in the Christian life? Penance can be expressed in many and various ways but above all in fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. These and many other forms of penance can be practiced in the daily life of a Christian, particularly during the time of Lent and on the penitential day of Friday. [Catechism of the Catholic Church 1434-1439]. Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, USCCB Publishing, Washington, DC, 2006, p 88.
4
What we do during this universal forty day retreat is to prepare us for what we are to do every day of our lives, We do not give up sins during Lent and then on Easter Sunday, we go back to them. We are to continue the journey that we began in Lent and to carry it out for the rest of our lives. We may not perform our acts of penance as intensely as we do during Lent, but we are still to perform some act of penance each and every Friday. As Knights of Columbus, we perform our acts of penance everyday through our principle of CHARITY. May we all have a joyful season of Lent Vivat Jesus! Fr. Edward J. Janoch Worthy State Chaplain
Mother of Good Counsel Prayer By Venerable Pope Pius XII
O Holy Virgin, to whose feet we are led by our anxious uncertainty in our search for and attainment of what is true and good, invoking you by the sweet title of Mother of Good Counsel, we beseech you to come to our assistance, when, along the road of this life, the darkness of error and of evil conspires towards our ruin by leading our minds and our hearts astray. O Seat of Wisdom and Star of the Sea, enlighten the doubtful and the erring, that they be not seduced by the false appearances of good; render them steadfast in the face of the hostile and corrupting influences of passion and of sin. O Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from your Divine Son a great love of virtue, and, in the hour of uncertainty and trial, the strength to embrace the way that leads to our salvation. If your hand sustains us, we shall walk unmolested along the path indicated to us by the life and words of Jesus, our Redeemer; and having followed freely and securely, even in the midst of this world's strife, the Sun of Truth and Justice under your maternal Star, we shall come to the enjoyment of full and eternal peace with you in the haven of salvation. Amen.
HOLY FATHER’S PRAYER INTENTIONS Offered in Solidarity with Pope Francis
March 2017 Support for Persecuted Christians. That persecuted Christians may be supported by the prayers and material help of the whole Church. Starting in 2017 the Pope will present only one prepared prayer intention per month, rather than the two presented before this year. He plans, however, to add a second prayer intention each month related to current events or urgent needs, like disaster relief. 5
STATE MEMBERSHIP
Commit to Membership Nick Gresko
I Need HELP From NonRecruiting Councils Each month I put into my monthly update with all the winners, top diocese and top councils the following statement, “Remember the goal is +250 for the month. Inspector Membership knows we can do it! What are you going to do for March - keep the same from last or go out pound the pavement helping Team Ohio be #1 again? Will your diocese make a leap towards being #1? That is all up to you! Well there is still 83 councils that have done the same thing month after month since July 1st. Do you know what the same thing they have done? If you said they have not recruited a new member yet you would be 100% correct. Our Worthy State Deputy and I need these councils to jump
on board and bring in a new member. If they did just think what our numbers as a state would look like. A lot of times getting that first member in is all you need to get a few more especially if you promote the Shining Armor Award. This encourages the new members to bring in a new member and if you make a big deal at your council about it trust me the new members will come!!! March, April and May with the land of 1000 members incentive there is not a better time than to bring in a new members because recruiters and councils all can bring in some serious cash. The state could give out $10,000 + in these 3 months. This could be some great extra cash to spend on vacation or make a home improvement that you have been putting off. I’m hoping that we can
have this list down to less than 35 by June 1st. Below you will find all of the Councils that have not recruited a new member as of 3/1/2016.
Form 100’s Within 3-7 days of a degree any Form 100’s should be emailed to the Supreme Council at membershiprecords@kofc.org Supreme is able to process the Form 100 much quicker this way and you have a receipt that they were sent in your sent mail. Plus this saves your council the cost of a stamp every time new members are brought in.
DVD Admissions Degree Worthy Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries it is extremely important that you are talking to your District Deputy and that he knows when you are planning these because he needs to submit a Form 450 and this is not happening all the time right now. Please get this information to your District Deputy so that he can do what he needs to do and to insure you get credit for the work that you are doing when it comes to degrees.
Form 450 is like GOLD!!! District Deputies please make sure within 3-7 days of holding a degree in your District the Form 450 is turned in. This is extremely important because this allows us to track if Supreme actually processed your Form 100’s! If you took the time to bring in a new member the State Membership Team wants to make sure you get credit for your hard work and effort. The Form 450 can be filled on line at the State Website and then it automatically sends it to who it needs to go to. Take advantage of this!!!

Mission #21: State-Wide Membership Drive TO: Great State of Ohio FROM: Inspector Membership Worthy Brothers Across the State of Ohio: The March Membership Drive is upon us as we continue to head toward the end of the fraternal year. We cannot give up and let Dr. Arceo win. We have the luck of the Irish on our side this month as many of us will be looking forward to corned beef, cabbage and some adult beverages. Use that as an opportunity to help recruit a new member - ANYONE WILL DO! Inspector Membership is encouraging all of us across Ohio to run your Membership Drives, setup Open Houses, have a First Degree and roll in the cash.
BONUS Mission: Bishop's Recruitment Drive A great mystery has been brought to the attention of Chief Collins and Inspector Membership. It appears that, all across the Great State of Ohio, members are missing. They figure it is time to bring in the big guns and deputize all of you to help solve the case. The attached flyer will explain the mission in better detail. The linked video below will also provide you with some inspiration to help crack this case. Cracking this case will require a higher power - we need to crack this case for all of the Bishop's throughout the state. With them and the power of God, we will be able to bring more men to our Order and strengthen our cause. Let alone, the Bishop with the most new members at the end will have a little something special - courtesy of the Knights of Columbus. So, get on board - forward this email to all your members and "WE WILL RECRUIT YOU" will sing over the entire state.

STATE GENERAL PROGRAMS
General Service Program Robert Walsh As we enter into the final reporting period, I need to remind you that it is a short one ending on April 15th and all reports are due by April 20th. Please review your programming points, and if you have any question check with the appropriate director or myself to help resolve your issues. Since we are nearing the end of the program year, it is time to honor those that have upheld the principles of our order, have helped out in the community, council, and parish. The deadline for these submissions is April 1st and submitted to the appropriate director. When submitting your honoree please give the Directors as much information about them as possible. You can find the form for
submittal on the web site under the Council headline. Is there a program your Council did that also promoted the principles of our order (i.e. helped out in the Parish, Community, Council, Youth, Culture of Life, Family, Membership, and Retention). It is also time to turn them in to the appropriate Director. These are also due by April 1st 2017. With the end of the Programming year coming there are many deadlines to watch for besides the ones listed above, on April 15th your Pennies for Heaven report is due, this is part of the Administration program. children. Suggested activities for this program are to sponsor a Mass, novena, rosary, Holy Hour or other prayer service for the unborn.
Brett Gissel As the fraternal year is winding down, it is time to review our council programming for the year to see if we have the met the minimum requirement of four programs in each programming category for the Columbian Award, which is the programming piece of the Star Council award. Whether your council is in need of suggestions to meet this requirement in the Culture of Life activities or looking to do more, here are some suggestions for completing the program: The Order Wide Day Of The Unborn Child (Pr ogr am #49) will be on March 25. This is a day when we unite in prayer for a return of respect and protection of the unborn
The 40 Days For Life campaign (Program #47) started on Ash Wednesday (March 1) and runs through April 9. To date the 40 Days For Life program has documented 12,668 lives saved. If your council is holding vigil outside of an abortion clinic, thank you for committing to this. The silent witness continues to show our resolve in ending the atrocity of abortion. These vigils are not the only way a council or individual can participate in the campaign. Prayer and evangelization are also part of the campaign. One can pray and fast in private with the intention of ending abortion. Promoting the program among your parishes is
to Supreme and the State paid up? Are you reviewing your programs to make sure you max out the State General Program, and all the requirements for Star Council Award? Please do not wait to the very end to get these in. Is your Council participating in the 40 Cans for Lent or doing some kind of Council Outreach at the end of March in Honor of Father McGivney?
another way to engage members and non-members alike to get them involved and to recruit. Include any people that participated, regardless of if it was at a clinic or not. Some councils have held diaper drives for local pr egnancy center s that do not perform abortions. These pregnancy centers provide such necessities to their clients as a service to help them choose life. Providing diapers for these families is a way of helping them choose life. Holding a collection is also a way to evangelize about the need to your parishes. Collections of diapers or other needs of pregnancy centers can be reported through the Council Choice (Programs 53 and 54). Community Tom Forsthoefel As the month of March has arrived our Lenten Season has started as well. Lent doesn’t have to be wanting to sacrifice for the wellbeing of ourselves. Lent can be looking at our inner being and see how we can improve our spiritual growth and how we can help others as well.
The State Knights of Columbus programs for the past year and a half plus have been to put charity first in our everyday life for ourselves and for the less fortunate we interact with on a daily basis. Has your council been working on this spiritual growth in these areas as we all prepare ourselves during this time? Lent is actually a wakeup call of what you should be doing
Council Tom Buehner Knight of the Year and Lady of the Year Nominations Please submit formal nominations for Knight of the Year and Lady of the Year to me. If your council has been working on helping others in your parish and community continue to do these good works for your fellow man. If your council has been struggling up and down in this area and has not been completing all the projects and goals you set up at the beginning of the fraternal year it is not too late to get back on track and finish out the fraternal year on a good note. Use the Lenten Season as a springboard to put charity first in helping those in your parish and community whether it is youth, elderly, the less fortunate or the homeless. Your council at this time should be looking at your end of the year honorees you want to recognize. Every council should be able to honor the men, women and youth that have been outstanding in your
communities. Many of these people have been the leaders around you that have put charity first in everything they do for the wellbeing of others. Please try to come up with the best of the best for the following areas: Blue Coat of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Knight of the Year, Youth of the Year, Family of the Year, Religious of the Year, Best Patriotic Activity & Lady of the Year. Use the Lenten Season as an incentive to complete your membership & insurance quotas for Star Council Award. Start working now to complete all the areas of necessity for your council’s growth and completion towards a successful finish of the fraternal year.

INSURANCE
We Stand Strong on Ethical Ground Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side that they see so often in the news and in movies. At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn’t true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards. More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don’t make it. “We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life.” In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come. But don’t just take our word for it. In 2016 the Knights of Columbus was named a “World’s Most Ethical Company” by the Ethisphere Institute for the third year in a row. We were one of only two life insurance companies to earn the honor. “Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance,” said the Supreme Knight. “But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values.”
Take steps to protect your family and your financial future.

OHIO KNIGHTS IN ACTION COUNCIL 5253 CONTINUES GREAT TRADITION OF SUPPORTING VOCATIONS
COUNCIL 8369 CELEBRATION COUNCIL 1065 SOUP OF WORLD MARRIAGE SATURDAY WEEKEND
Members of Father Andrew H. Hohman Council 5253 in Reynoldsburg have great record of supporting seminarians. They give seminarians $500 annually to help defray the cost of books and supplies. Council 5253 is active in the Pennies for Heaven campaign collecting between $6,000 and $7,000 annually. Last year, they sent 29 Christmas cards that included a gift card and words of encouragement. Over the last several years, St. Pius X parish and the council worked closely with seminarian Robert Johnson. On New Year’s Day, Robert had the honor of serving mass for Pope Francis, helping vest him before the service and receiving a rosary from him. Along with several other classmates at the Josephinum, Robert was part of a retreat at Assisi.
Celebration of World Marriage Weekend at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Grafton, Ohio. Brother Knights of Council 8369 purchased over 300 flower seed packets and assembled each with a note relative to World Marriage Weekend “ May the planting of the seeds from this packet be symbolic of your marriage. With loving care and nurturing, beauty will bloom forth for all to see and cherish”
Brother Knights from Council 1065 held a Soup Saturday at St. Bernard Parish in Corning Ohio on February 11th. We served Chili, Potato and Pasta Fagioli Soup and raised $276.00 to purchase school supplies for St. Rose Grade School in New Lexington Ohio.

MEASURE UP CAMPAIGN MEASURE UP STARTS NOW - with the advent of the big box stores cutting some councils out from collecting outside their stores, the State has decided to extend the deadline for turn in from June to August. They are asking councils to hold other fundraisers that can take the place of the box stores. If your council holds one in the summer, your funds will not be late. So if you are still allowed to collect at your local box store, feel free to do another fundraiser in addition. If you would like the State Deputy to send the management of a box store a letter to help enable you to collect there again, please email him (rfcollinsjr@gmail.com) with the name, title, address, city, state, and zip. He will then get that out and alert you so you and the State can track the progress of the letter. Also there are some more ideas on how you can raise funds inside the 2017 Measure Up Campaign Book. Your DD will receive those books or more of them at the Super Cash Bonanza ticket distribution on Feb. 18th. So call him and reserve your copy, if you have not already received one. So let's get out there and start collecting to help our developmentally disabled friends from Ohio. Larry J. SUPER CASH BONANZA
Plant the Seed to Grow CASH for Charity The 2017 Super Cash Bonanza Charity Campaign Super Cash Bonanza Charity Raffle Tickets and posters were distributed during the Ticket Distribution Meetings throughout Ohio the weekends of February 17,18,18 or 24,25 (2017). Please make sure that all who are in charge of the 2017 Super Cash Bonanza Charity Campaign have read the materials provided to the council, especially, the information booklet. Significant income for charity can be earned by your council (far surpassing the basic rebate of $2.40 per ticket), but you must adhere to the “rules” as presented in the information booklet. Some rebates require meeting attendance, while others require meeting First Phase and Final Phase quotas. Here are some of the key points:
A minimum of two members from your council must attend the Diocesan Ticket Distribution Meeting. The two-member requirement does not include the District Deputy, State Directors and Chairs, or a State Officer to qualify for these rebates.
The sold tickets and one check from your council must be sent to the State Treasurer by the published deadlines. The two turn-in dates are Saturday, April 15 (2017) and Friday, May 13 (2017). Your council must meet these deadlines with the required number of sold tickets per member in order to qualify for the different rebates.
Most methods of shipping are acceptable. UPS, FedEx or the US Postal System all have good record of timely delivery of small packages. Please do not send your package by a method requiring my signature. These often go back to the delivery agent’s warehouse and await pickup. Please use durable-strength envelopes or cartons to avoid damage during shipment.
Please make every effort to have all of your council’s tickets submitted by the second turn-in deadline. Tickets brought to and delivered at the convention might create a processing problem. With the drawing taking place that weekend, there is very little time for late arrivals. We cannot guarantee your rebates on tickets received more than a few days after the final turn-in date of May 13, 2017.
Extra materials and tickets can be obtained from your District Deputy or Diocesan Officer. Any questions concerning the 2017 Super Cash Bonanza Campaign should be directed to me, Robert Byers, State Treasurer and Chair, by email at robert_byers@hotmail.com or by calling me at 740-706-0044 cell or 740-373-7154 home. Plan early, promote, and partner! We are here to help you work toward the success of the 2017 Super Cash Bonanza charity campaign at your local council. Thank you to all my brother knights for helping me “Plant the Seed and Grow CASH for Charity.” Additional information is also available on the Ohio State Council state website at www.kofcohio.org.
