MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE OHIO STATE COUNCIL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

APRIL 2018

State Deputy News and Notes Kevin Miller Brothers Knights, With the 2018 Super Cash Bonanza Campaign well under way with the first turn in on April 15, 2018, it is important to review what happens to the Ohio State Council portion of the ticket sales. For more than 55 years, ticket chairmen from local councils across Ohio have been sending in $2.60 per ticket (or book), with $2.40 per ticket (or book) retained by the local council for its favorite charities and/or special community projects. Once the expenses are subtracted from the Ohio State Council proceeds, the remaining monies are transferred to the Ohio Charity Foundation. The charity campaign monthly and lifetime winners receive a check at the beginning of each month as advertised on the ticket. Monies to fund these monthly winners’ checks are safeguarded so that all fiscal liabilities to the charity foundation are covered adequately for all winning tickers. The following are some of the annual grants funded by the Ohio Charity Foundation through the sales of the Super Cash Bonanza charity campaign tickets:

State Squires Grant - $5,000 State Vocations Grant - $10,000 Matching Funds Grant - $25,000 Additional Religious Education Grant - $1,500 Foundation Directors’ Grants – $9,000 Solicited Foundation Grants Varies Diocesan Veterans’ Christmas Grants - $2,800 State Squires Grant ($5,000). This grant check is written in June for operating expenses of the State Squires’ Program and Officers’ Expenses, and funding of their state convention. State Vocations Grant ($10,000). These grant checks are written according to the following schedule and sent to the Diocesan Vocation Directors in July (for each diocese). Matching Funds ($25,000) for Religious Education. The Ohio Charity Foundation provides $25,000 which is added to the local council diocesan collections. An additional Religious Education Grant of $1,500 is presented to the Byzantine Eparchy of Parma for its religious

education program. Foundation Directors’ Grants ($9,000 total - $1,500 per diocese). The member s of the Ohio Charity Foundation provide diocesan-centered grants for projects that are diocesan and local endeavors. These grants provide additional monies to fund projects selected by the directors. In the past, these projects have included donations toward Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, etc. State Veterans’ Grants ($2,800 $400 per chairman). These grant checks are written and sent to the Diocesan Veterans Chairs in November to help

(Continued from page 1) with their Christmas programs. Additional Approved Foundation Grants. These gr ants ar e approved by a written formal application to the Charity Foundation and then are routinely considered at the January Ohio Charity Foundation meeting. The grants need to be non-diocesan specific and focus on a statewide emphasis.

As Knights of the Ohio State Council Knights of Columbus, we should be proud that with the sales of tickets for the Super Cash Bonanza, the program shows that directly or indirectly: We support the State Squires program. We support diocesan vocation programs. We support our Ohio seminarians (indirectly). We support our veterans. We support our diocesan religious education programs.

We support Catholic high school education. We support many diocesan and state charities. We support our priests and bishops. We are following the first principle of our Order -- Charity. Continue to sell those tickets as the final turn-in is in May just before the State Convention. Who knows…you might even win! Thank you for all that you do IN HIS HONOR!

K OF C NAMED ONE OF WORLD'S MOST ETHICAL COMPANIES® The Knights of Columbus has been recognized by the Ethisphere® Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, as one of the 2018 World’s Most Ethical Companies®. The Knights of Columbus has won the distinction for five consecutive years and is one of only three companies in the life insurance category, underscoring the Knights’ commitment to leading ethical business standards and practices. “We are grateful for this honor because it recognizes that our commitment to corporate ethics and integrity is part of our founding mission and continues to be our highest priority,” said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson. “Based on Catholic values, this commitment extends to every aspect of our work, our corporate governance, our professional agency force, our investments, and our day-to-day business operations.” The needs of widows and orphans led Father Michael J. McGivney to respond in 1882 by founding the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal benefit society that has grown into a worldwide financial and charitable organization. The 135 honorees for 2018 span 23 countries and 57 industries. The honorees had record levels of involvement with their stakeholders and communities around the world. Measuring and improving culture; leading authentically; and

committing to transparency, diversity and inclusion were all priorities for honorees. “While the discourse around the world changed profoundly in 2017, a stronger voice emerged. Global corporations operating with a common rule of law are now society’s strongest force to improve the human condition,” said Ethisphere® CEO Timothy Erblich. “This year we saw companies increasingly finding their voice. The World’s Most Ethical Companies® in particular continued to show exemplary leadership. I congratulate everyone at the Knights of Columbus for being recognized as one of the World's Most Ethical Companies.” Chief Insurance Officer Thomas P. Smith Jr. added, “The Knights of Columbus prides itself on having one of the best field forces in the business. As Knights ourselves, we are able to serve our brother Knights in a way that others can’t. With your help, we will carry Father McGivney’s mission into the future, and make sure that brother Knights and their families are protected.

State Membership Frank Iannaggi The new leaders

Brothers in the faith, it is now April and a new season is upon us, the season of Easter. This season is often characterized as the beginning of new life both in the world about and the very depths of our souls. During the Easter season we reflect on the one thing that is constant in our lives and that is the love of God and how some of us are willing to give all that have so we can share in that happiness for eternity. As I reflect on this I am asking you to do the same and reflect on the new members welcomed into our faith during the celebration of the Easter Vigil. These individuals have a strong genuine love for God and they have chosen to follow him despite loosing all that had which often time includes the loss of family, and friends. We must turn to these men and welcome them into our ranks, befriend them and love them. These men have made the most difficult choice to follow God and they are ready to make the choice to join the Knights of Columbus if they are asked. These men

new growth and retention. March blitz numbers indicated that many councils took advantage of the spring like weather and worked the church drives. This boosted statewide intake significantly with 172 new members added to our ranks. Well done ...that is over 30 % increase over our average monthly intake. But as well as we did, we must continue to manage the retention of our existing members. Empower your retention committees to review membership status at every meeting and make personal contact with struggling members a high priority. Membership growth assures the continued success and sustain our councils. Complacency can lead to the death of a council, stay vigilant for success. A blessed Easter to all of you and your families.

General Programs Rod Anderson Is Your Council Ready for April? Yes, I know all of the Councils are finishing up with their Membership Blitzes, Church Drives and Open Houses, not to mention Lenten Fish Frys, 40 Days For Life, and myriad other Activities. But one of the most important things for Councils each and every month is the final planning for the next month. And now, the next month is April already – the final month of the 2017-2018 Ohio State Program In His Honor! It is hard to believe that we are rapidly approaching the end of the State Program for this year. Nevertheless, it is time to assess the status of your Council’s reports and submissions for the State Program. Has the Council Program Director, usually the Deputy Grand Knight,

made sure that the Council Activities have all been reported on the State website, at kofcohio.org? Has the Council Financial Secretary and Treasurer paid all the Supreme and State per capita and other bills? Has the Council submitted all of the required Administrative Reports and Forms? Has the Council maxxed the Ohio In His Honor State Program and met the necessary deadlines? There is still time, but with the State Program year rapidly coming to a close, Councils and their officers, directors and chairmen, should be completing all of the necessary paperwork. Keep in mind that many of these tasks are not just for awards, but requirements to keep the Council in good standing with the State Council as well as Supreme. State and Supreme awards are designed primarily to provide well-deserved recognition and “thank yous” to Councils, brother Knights, and their parishes and communities for their work and contributions throughout the year. It is imperative that the the State Circle only.

Councils submit the necessary reports and forms so they receive the honors and recognition that are so richly deserved. So Grand Knights, Deputy Grand Knights, Council Program Directors, please take some time in March to review your Councils’ status for reporting and submitting forms. There is still time to take care of any deficiencies before the deadlines, but not a lot. April 15 is the Ohio State In His Honor Program reporting deadline, and it will be here before you know it. If you need assistance with any of the reports or forms, your District Deputy is there to help. And of course, the State Staff and Program Directors also will do what they can to support your efforts. Just ask if you need any help. And always remember that the State In His Honor programs and service will help you recruit new Knights, and “If you build it, they will come!”

Measure Up 2018 Jeff Kiliany, State Warden

How does you Council Measure-Up? The time to start your councils “Measure -UP” collection efforts is fast approaching. The 2018 Measure-Up Campaign will officially be conducted on the weekends of April 26-29 and May 36, but can include other fundraising dates throughout the year. Measure-Up is a charity whereby Knights are asked to put on those bright yellow and red vests and stand on street corners – or wherever – holding special containers and seeking contributions from the general public. In turn, Knights give a special ruler to those who contribute.

amount wasn’t nearly as much as the 10,020 by council #2798, but divide this total by their 37 members, and it amounts to $120.47 per member! Congratulations Fr. Cortoma Council.

This past year, Coldwater Council #1991 collected $1,881 from its members in their “Gimme 5” Campaign this past year, the highest “Gimme 5” amount in the state. Congratulations to the members of Coldwater Council 1991 for their outstanding Gimme 5 effort.

Councils are asked to send one check with their total collections, making it payable to Knights of Columbus Ohio State Council and mailing it to: Jeff Kiliany, 559 Walnut St., Leetonia, OH 44431. Eighty per cent of the collected funds will be returned to the councils for Tops in the State of Ohio in total amount their charitable contributions to agencies collected last year was Archbishop of their choosing. Super Cash Bonanza 2018 Mark Siracusa, State Advocate Significant income for charity can be earned by your council (far surpassing the basic rebate of $2.40 per ticket), but you must adhere to the “rules” as presented in the information booklet. Some rebates require meeting attendance, while others require meeting First Phase and Final Phase quotas. Here are some of the key points: 

A minimum of two members from  your council must attend the Diocesan Ticket Distribution Meeting. The twomember requirement does not include the District Deputy, State Directors and Chairs, or a State Officer to qualify for these rebates. The sold tickets and one check from your council must be sent to the State Treasurer by the published deadlines.

The two turn-in dates are Saturday, April 15 (2018) and Friday, May 10 (2018). Your council must meet these deadlines with the required number of sold tickets per member in order to qualify for the different rebates. Most methods of shipping are acceptable. UPS, Fed Ex or the US Postal System all have a good record of timely delivery of small packages. Please do not send your package by a method requiring my signature. These often go back to the delivery agent’s warehouse and await pickup. Please use durable-strength envelopes or cartons to avoid damage during shipment. Please make every effort to have all of your council’s tickets submitted by the second turn-in deadline. Tickets brought to and delivered at the convention might create a processing problem. With the drawing taking place that weekend, there is very little time for late arrivals. We cannot guarantee your rebates on tickets

received more than a few days after the final turn-in date of May 10, 2018. Extra materials and tickets can be obtained from your District Deputy or Diocesan Officer. Any questions concerning the 2018 Super Cash Bonanza Campaign should be directed to me, Mark Siracusa; State Treasurer and Chair, by email at cuzza@roadrunner.com or by calling me at 419-553-9552 cell. Plan early, promote, and partner! We are here to help you work toward the success of the 2018 Super Cash Bonanza charity campaign at your local council. Thank you to all my brother knights for helping “Our Family” for raising money for Charity. Additional information is also available on the Ohio State Council state website at www.kofcohio.org.
