Protecting the Breadwinner’s Income While jobs may be safer in 2018, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related? The Knights have always sought to protect members’ families from the “loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you know all about Father McGivney’s vision for our

active dialogue with their pastors and clergy. The success of Faith in Action, and ultimately our Councils, rests solely on the participation of our parishes and their willingness to support these programs. Without the understanding and backing of our clergy, Faith In Action cannot hope to be successful. Make sure that someone from your Council takes the opportunity to talk with and explain Faith in Action to your Pastor, them how the Knights of Columbus are interested in helping them build better Catholic men, better Catholic families, and fully supporting our parish and Catholic faith I wish every Council in the state of Ohio great success in their activities in the coming months. I encourage all of you to go forward and do the good work of Christ again working together can be nothing but successful! I remain, In His Honor, Kevin Miller State Deputy Ohio State Council

insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn’t work because of an illness. After all, the “loss” of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person’s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner’s income. Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness? I’ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren’t sure what this coverage entails, how much

income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow. That’s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage.

General Programs

Rod Anderson, State General Program Director 2 Months Down, 7 And A Half To Go! That’s right...the first two months of this fraternal year are now history. And the April 15 deadline for State Program reporting is already just seven and a half months away! How are your Council’s activities going so far? Have you been successful in getting prospective new members to attend your July and August activities? How is your October Blitz planning going? And have you submitted your Council Activities Reports for July and August activities on the State Council website (on-time reports by September 5)? If you thought July and August flew by, September and October will be even busier with all the back-toschool, soccer, football, band and

other family and school functions. Then there are the fall pro-life and October church recruiting drives and open house activities. These will indeed present a whirlwind of activities and work for Knights and their Councils. And in the midst of these, planning for the holidays and the many Council family and religious activities will be especially important to make sure they run smoothly and as expected.

The first reporting period has just ended and all reports should be in by the 5th. The number of councils reporting is off to a great start, so if you have activities that fit the Community Program make sure that they are reported.

Reminder: The mandatory Family Activity State Matching Funds participation with on-time turn-in report is due November 15!

Robert Walsh

In the Faith in Action program from Supreme, there are four requirements to qualify for the Columbian Award. In the Community Program the requirement is “Helping Hands”. The Helping Hands program is designed to help the most disadvantage members in your communities- the homeless, the addicted, the elderly who feel isolated and abandoned, and many more. As Knights we do a lot to help those in need within our community. By helping at soup kitchens, repairing the facilities of a local service organization or something entirely unique. The requirements for this program are broad so that councils can tailor their activities to fit the need in your community.

Tom Buehner

Are you helping your Council members and their families get to heaven? Our main goal in life is to become saints – to get to heaven so we can spend eternity with God. And we should take as many people with us as we can – especially our family. By providing council activities that build up and enrich our faith and the faith in the lives of our families, we can help our Council members and their families get to heaven. So please, take the time to provide meaningful, faithcentered, family activities for your Councils and parishes. It’s so important that we, as Knights of Columbus, support the family in today’s society. Please remember to take the time to submit your activities on the State website and reach out to me with any questions!

Mapping the State Program to Supreme’s Faith In Action Program Ron de Santos

This document was put together by District Deputy Rob de Santos in the Columbus Diocese, to MAP the State Program Activities by number to the Supreme Faith In Action Program categories for the SP-7 Columbian Award for Star Council. It MAY be helpful to Councils in assisting to identify where the State Program Activities, by number, logically track to the Faith In Action Programs and activities. The Knights of Columbus offers men a place to lead their families and communities in faith and service and put their Faith into Action. Knights of Columbus members, parishes and families have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference through 32 Supreme Council-recommended programs. Organized into Faith, Family, Community and Life categories, the Faith in Action program model empowers Knights to come together to share faith, celebrate fraternity with loved ones, and do what they do best — stand shoulder to shoulder in service to the community and to defend life at all stages and in every condition.

them now and give yourself plenty of time to put together a nice nomination packet together to turn in.

Tim Mangan Brother Knights, the first reporting period is now over, and I would like to thank all the councils that have turned in at least one council program activity to me this fraternal year. You guys did a great job reporting your activities online to me. If your council has not yet reported at least one council program activity to me this fraternal year, you have plenty of time left to do so. I encourage those councils to report at least one council program activity to me during the September/October reporting period. Remember, it only takes a few minutes to report your activities online on the state website and you might even have fun doing it! Reporting these activities not only gives you credit for the activities your

council is doing and helps you max out the state general program, it could earn an award for your council which will be presented at the state convention in 2019. You just never know! Speaking of awards at the state convention, now is the time to think about and start working on your write ups for both Knight of the Year and Lady of the Year. I know it’s only September and these write ups aren’t due until April 1, 2019, but you want to gather as much information as possible on your nominations and gather as much supporting documentation as you can, and it takes time to make all that happen. Before you know it, Christmas will be here then 2019 will be here and once January 1, 2019 arrives, you will only have 3 months left that will fly by so fast! So, start working on

Whatever your council does for Respect Life month, remember it is our duty to love our neighbor as ourselves and what we do for our neighbors, we do In His Honor. Consider reading the section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church about the Fourth Commandment to guide you. When people notice our Faith In Action, they may become interested in helping or joining. As we build a Culture Of Life, we can make it stronger by growing our councils to do more for our parishes.

Speaking of Lady of the Year, it is not mandatory to have a Lady of the Year and there is no category for Lady of the Year which makes this a council choice activity. So, you can submit Lady of the Year as one of your council choice activities and get credit for it. That is if you need the credit. If you already have all three of your council choice activities turned in and received credit for all three council choice activities, then you can still nominate a Lady of the Year and she will be considered a possible diocesan winner and maybe even the state winner. If your council did not nominate a Lady of the Year during this past fraternal year, please consider doing so this fraternal year.

Support Our Seminarians Ed Olenhouse

“The Power of One” Most of us have heard this expression. But never take time to ask, “What does that mean?”

When speaking of our seminarians, it asks: “What can I do to assist these young men in their out of classroom expenses?” Some individual examples: for the next 25 weeks. Can I spare $1.00 per week? Could I skip a cup of coffee or beverage? Can my family pray for our seminarians? Some council or church considerations: Run a project which benefits our seminarians? Ask our parishioners to donate in a special collection after Sunday Mass in October, January, and March? Say a rosary at your council/assembly meeting? In summary, taking care of our seminarians is perhaps the most positive thing the Knights of Columbus can do for our church. SOS-Support our Seminarians. Knights In Action Council #1016 Outing On Monday August 13th the Knights of Columbus, Council 1016 held our monthly dinner at Rose Hill School shelter. Every year the Knights spend the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May participating in our Measure-Up Campaign. For this campaign we stand outside Walmart and Tractor Supply east collecting money for a very worthy cause. Our cause is the Fairfield County Foundation. The past few years they have been trying to raise enough money to build an accessible Ball field for the handicap, so all kids can participate. At the picnic the Knights presented Dave Macioco, the representative for the Fairfield County Foundation a check from our Measure-Up campaign. We were fortunate enough to have raised $3,982.40 which we donated to be used for the Accessible Ballfield. The Fairfield County Foundation will gladly accept any amount you can donate too. Pictured presenting Dave the check is Co-Chairman John Rackham and Grand Knight Vince Johnson. Council #505 The Zanesville, OH Knights of Columbus Council 505, represented by Youth Program Chair Robert La Prad, left, and Grand Knight Mark Hill, right, presented the Avondale Youth Center with numerous sporting goods this week. Youth Center Director Gary King, middle, said the center has been in need of sporting goods for the past year. AVONDALE - The Avondale Youth Center is home to 22 children between ages 10 and 18, so sporting activities are a popular part of the day. Equipment is needed for most of those tasks, and the center was short on most of them. The Knights of Columbus Council 505 made sure to change that. The council, including Grand Knight Mark Hill and Youth Program Chair Robert La Prad, presented the center with several new sporting good items this week as part of its Christmas in July program.
