STATE OFFICER REPORT WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS There are a couple of things Jim Maslach in life State Warden that I really appreciate. First, a good and healthy relationship with our God. Second, good family and friends. Finally, a walk in the woods. I continue to work on the first two and with God’s help, I know that I blessed. But it is that third one that really gets my soul turning.

And then, there it is—the end of your journey where the most majestic and beautiful thing that the hand of God can create. Stunning as you stop in your tracks.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

George Metz Diocesan Membership Director

Brothers, As of October 2nd, there are 21 new members for the month of September. We doubled our intake compared to August! Year to date we have 43 new members and we stand at 13% of our fraternal intake year quota of 331 members. As councils start to meet face-to-face again, the question of Exemplifications has come up. Yes, councils can return to doing the NEW Exemplification of Charity, Unity and Fraternity as long as they follow parish, local and state safety measures. Please keep Jim, your District Deputy and me up-to-date if you are planning to have a degree. We would love to come and welcome the new brothers to our Order. Are you still a little iffy one-membership? Join Steve Cohen, PSD Maryland and our Supreme Regional Training Director for an in depth look at E-Membership from Supreme side. Classes are now available for October. Check out the state website for the registration link or contact your GK. Steve also as more training available like the Delta Church Drive. Since parish drives might be a challenge this October, consider a virtual or mailing church drive. Let me know if we can help.

FAITH IN ACTION The first quarter of the new fraternal year is history. COVID has really put a damper on the programs and events that councils can have. Despite the challenges of COVID, councils are doing things and reporting what they are doing to beat the COVID and continue to serve our brothers and sisters. As of this report, 16% of the active councils in the Cleveland Diocese have at least reported a program to the state website and was graded. That is 11 councils and is slightly higher than the state average of 11%. Our goal for this fraternal year is 100% of all active councils report at least one (1) program. Good start as councils start to meeting again and develop their programs in the COVID world. If you need help entering programs, please reach out to your District Deputy. Their contact information is on the last page. If they cannot, contact Jim, George or Mike. We are here to help you and your council succeed and programming and events are just one aspect.

Varsity Coats for Needy Folks My name is John Fox, and I am Deputy Grand Knight of the St. Ladislas Council # 16373 and I am asking for your help. Several years ago while attending noon mass at St. Malachi parish in November, I saw a man sitting on the church steps dressed in a light coat shivering, he took up residence in my mind. Several weeks later while cleaning out a closet I came across a varsity coat that my son had worn in high school and left when he went to college. I began to wonder how many other families had similar coats that they might donate. I made contact with the Care Alliance through the Arrupe Program at St. Ignatius High School. Over the last several years, the program, which my daughter named "Varsity Coats for Needy Folks" has grown to provide hundreds of coats for the homeless. With the help of the high schools we have been able to meet the need each year. That the weather conditions in Cleveland can be treacherous, goes without saying. Many homeless in northeast Ohio lack proper winter coats to fend off the severe weather conditions, sometimes the lack of a winter coat presents a critical challenge to survive the conditions. The number of homeless camps in the area continues to grow, when I first started there were 70 camps, last year the number grew to more than 125 and with the financial problems brought on by Covid 19, I expect it to be larger this year. Due to lack of space in the homeless shelters many are forced to sleep outside, some in tents, others in cardboard shacks to fend off the fierce winds and the ice and snow. Sometimes a winter coat is all the protection that they have from the elements. With the schools unable to fulfill the need of the heavy winter coats, we are asking for help from our brother Knights and Councils. Large men's winter coats are in great need along with hoodies. God Bless you and thank you for your help. Vivat Jesus! John Fox, Varsity Coats for Needy Folks Phone: (216) 543-3350 / Email: trinity.fox7@gmail.com 9
