Mission Statement We as men of the Knights of Columbus, men of faith, are called through Baptism to grow and increase in faith. We are thereby summoned to serve as witnesses to that faith in our daily lives, in the lives of our families, and in the lives of others throughout our communities.

Mission Objective Fostering men united in a faith that will continue the growth of Fr. McGivney’s dream ensuring the spread of Columbianism; becoming more visible through the good works of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity; creating an atmosphere which encourages and calls all Catholic men to serve with their Brothers.

How we will meet our objectives “Through Him, With Him, In Him”, O God almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, forever and ever.

FROM THE STATE DEPUTY… Brother Knights, Our theme, “Through Him, With Him, In Him,” is taken from the Ordinary of the Mass. It is that time of the mass when we give everything back to God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ. A firm commitment to these six simple words will set the tone for a new found faith, a stronger catholic family and an unshakeable church. We do realize that simple words alone do not make a program successful. It will be the love of God on fire within our hearts and souls that will make this theme take life. It will start with the performance of every act of charity uniting ourselves as a single brotherhood across this great State of Ohio, all for the honor and glory of God. We cannot afford to take a single moment or opportunity for granted. The focus must be a renewed effort dedicating our lives and actions to the Almighty Father. Our theme, our mission statement, our state program are all faith based and focused on our efforts as Knights of Columbus to work through our parishes and reach out to the community, our families, and our youth. It will take a supreme effort of dedication from everyone working to give everything back to God and truly become successful as a Knight, a Council, and a Brotherhood. We must continue to remain the visible leadership within the Catholic Community. “Through Him, With Him, In Him,” we hear it every time when we attend the sacrifice of the mass. Take every opportunity to say this simple phrase with the celebrant and confirm your undying dedication as a catholic gentleman and a Knight of Columbus to give back all we have, all we are, and all we can be for the honor and glory of God. Jesus true passion was His love for us. Return that love to Him with a passion of your own. A LETTER FROM OUR STATE CHAPLAIN… Dear Brother Knights: With the blessings of The Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon, Bishop of Cleveland, I am honored to be able to minister to my brother Knights as your State Chaplain for the 2015-2017 fraternal years. I have been an ordained priest for the Diocese of Cleveland since my Ordination on 20 May 2000 by The Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla. I have served the Diocese of Cleveland as a Parochial Vicar at St. Clare Parish, in Lyndhurst, Ohio; St. Columbkille Parish, in Parma, Ohio; St. Patrick Parish [Rocky River Drive], in Cleveland; St. Barnabas Parish, in Northfield, Ohio and at my current assignment at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, in Parma, Ohio. I have been a member of the Knights of Columbus when I made my First, Second, and Third Degrees in 1996, while I was a seminarian at Saint Mary Seminary, in Wickliffe, Ohio; the Diocese of Cleveland seminary. I made my Fourth Degree in 2004. I supported the Knights in my prayers but I did not have much involvement with the Knights until I arrived at St. Barnabas Parish, in 2010. There I became the Chaplain for the Western Reserve Fr. Bedell Council #5559. It was there that my appreciation for the Knights and all that we do blossomed and has shown to me the great holiness and blessing the Knights of Columbus are to the Church and to the World. The issues of Life, Liberty and Faith have always been a part of my priestly identity. ProLife issues, Religious Freedom concerns, Priest and Religious Vocations, and Religious Devotions have been a part of my life, from childhood to the present. I am the Spiritual Director for the Diocesan St. Padre Pio Prayer Group and am an “amateur” hagiologist [study of and the admiration for the Saints; in Heaven and here on Earth]. I have a devotion to the Blessed Mother since I was a mere youth. Our Mother of Good Counsel will play a vital role for the Ohio State Council during these next two years. These areas of my life will continue to be a part of my life, now as the State Chaplain for the Ohio Council of the Knights of Columbus. I look forward to working with State Deputy Robert F. Collins, Jr., the Ohio State Council of the Knights of Columbus and all my Brother Knights throughout the Great State of Ohio to promote the Roman Catholic Faith, which the Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney, loved and lived in his short life. It is in our Faith in Christ Jesus that we have life, so we need to work to proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ and to share His life by our words but also by our actions. The Knights of Columbus have been doing this for 133 years and we will not stop now; “for with God all things are possible”. As we pray in the Mass; “Through Him and with Him and in Him”, we declare that everything said and done in the Catholic Church is done in the name of Christ Jesus. He is the source of our Faith. May our Ohio State Council of the Knights of Columbus and all Ohio Knights dedicate ourselves to doing all Through, With, and In Christ. Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and Forever!

A LETTER FROM THE STATE GENERAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR… My Brother Knights of Ohio, Welcome to the “THROUGH HIM, WITH HIM, IN HIM” General Program. This program was designed to have everyone in your Council take part in the programming and help the leadership grow your Council. In preparing this program it is hopeful your Council can help your parish, community, and yourself grow to better serve your “Brothers and Sisters” in Christ, by doing his work “Through Him, With Him, In Him”. There are some changes from the previous program, with some favorite activities and some new activities that will be better for everyone in the Council, to help in activities that they are interested in. It is important that you read the program over and get your Council Directors together, and study the program to be able to achieve the most out of it, and Max out the program. The Directors chosen are leaders in their Council, with many years of experience, and can help you design the program to help you fit your Council, so please ask for their advice and council to achieve your goals. I know that Councils have their favorite activities, but think about doing something different, something new in your Council. As your council starts to plan the programs for the year, remember to strive for the “STAR COUNCIL AWARD”. This award can help the council show others, the great work you are doing for the church, and community. Again we are highlighting the Supreme programs that are in the Surge for Service Program. By completing these programs to the Supreme requirements your Council can max out the State program for this activity. Some of the activities are the favorites of the State Deputy Robert Collins, in Vocation, in Catholic School Education, and in your Family. General Program Requirements The General Program consists of two areas. Complete five (5) activities in the seven (7) program areas: Church, Community, Council, Family, Culture of Life, Youth, and Membership; and three (3) additional activities in the Retention Program for a total of 38 activities and complete the required Administrative Program from July 1 through April 15. Council Division Levels The general program division levels are established in order for all size councils to competitively participate in the state program. Divisions are determined by the number of members in each council as of the May 1 Supreme Membership Report. The general program will have five divisions with an equal number of councils in each division.

Activity Reporting Guidelines The guidelines are outlined to allow every council participate in the State General Program Contest. All program activities are to be conducted within the period of July 1st through April 15th to qualify for program points. Councils are encouraged to plan and conduct ongoing activities in May and in June. However, those activities may not necessarily qualify under the parameters of the State General Program guidelines. If your Council holds an annual event in the last part of April, in May, or in June, you may submit that activity for points under the “Through Him, With Him, In Him” General Program Contest. Ø Reporting Periods The general program will have five (5) reporting periods commencing on July 1 and ending on April 15. Reports must be submitted on-line no later than the fifth day of the next reporting period, with exception to April as shown below. General Program Activity Awards Council Administrative Award This award will be presented to all councils that complete the eleven (11) required Administrative Activities shown in the Administrative & Special Program Requirement section. This award recognizes those councils that keep current with the Supreme and State reporting requirements and State Council Charitable events. All Administrative Award plaques will be presented at the State Convention.

Best Council and State Patriotic Award The Former Masters’ Club will review the Patriotic Activities then choose the Best Council Patriotic Award for each Diocese. There will be one Best State Patriotic Award chosen from among the Diocesan winners. These awards will be presented at the State convention in May. See Activity #16 on page #44 for details on how to compete. There will be a total of 6 (six) Best Council Patriotic Award plaques & 1 (one) Best State Patriotic Award plaque.

Best Newsletter / E-Newsletter Award A Best Newsletter / E-Newsletter Contest will be conducted during the fraternal year, with awards presented at the State Convention to councils with the best newsletter in each division, and for an overall statewide best newsletter. There will be a total of 5 (five) Best Newsletter Award plaques & 1 (one) Best Overall Newsletter Award plaque.

Best Special Interest Story Award Send special interest stories about your council and/or members and include photos, either through email or the US Postal Service to: Harding Christ, Editor, Buckeye Bulletin, 32649 Surrey Lane, Avon Lake, OH 44012-1642; Email: harding.c@oh.rr.com. One award will be presented at the next State Convention to the council reporting that special story. There will be a 1 (one) Best Special Interest Story Award plaque.

State, Division & Diocesan Awards Councils have the chance to earn a variety of awards based upon their performance in the State General Program. Councils that complete the following list of requirements will receive their awards at the State Convention. There will be three (3) award levels. 1. The “In Him” Programming Award Ø Report the required 38 program activities in the eight (8) reporting areas and earn the 920 program points. Ø Submit all the eleven (11) required Administrative Requirements and earn the 165 administrative points. Ø Achieve your council’s net Supreme Membership Quota as of May 1. 2. Ø Submit all the eleven (11) required Administrative Requirements and earn the 165 administrative points. Ø Record a net membership gain of one (1) new member as of May 1.

Top Overall Divisional Award The top five (5) councils in each of the five (5) divisions will receive an award for their standing in the State General Program contest. The four (4) tiebreaker rules will be used to determine the overall council standing in each division. The five (5) divisions are: Division # 5, 20 to 59 Members; Division # 4, 60 to 99 Members; Division # 3, 100 to 156 Members; Division # 2, 157 to 240 Members; and Division # 1, over 241 Members. Eligible councils should have earned all 920 program points and all 165 administrative and event points. There will be a total of twenty-five (25) Top Divisional Awards.

There will be a total of fifty-five (55) Best Activity Divisional Awards.

Best Overall Activity Awards An award will be given to the council regardless of division for the Best Overall Statewide Activity in the following Reporting areas: Church, Community, Council, Family, Culture of Life, Youth, Membership, Squires, Vocations, Retention, and Public Relations. There will be a total of eleven (11) Best Overall Statewide Awards.

Best Supreme Activity Awards Best Overall Activity Award An award will be given to the council regardless of division for the Best Overall Statewide Activity. Recipients of these awards will have their activity forwarded to Supreme Council for consideration at the Supreme Convention. The six (6) program areas for the Supreme Council awards are Church, Community, Council, Family, Culture of Life, and Youth. There will be a total of six (6) Supreme Awards.

Star Council Awards To receive this Supreme Award, your council needs be in Good Standing that is current with all Supreme council Assessments; submit Form #365 Service Program Personnel Report, submit Form #1728 Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity, achieve your Supreme Membership Quota, achieve your Supreme Insurance Quota, and submit Form #SP7 Columbian Award Application by June 30th . The Supreme Council Star council is the highest award presented by Supreme Council. The Star Council Awards Plaques will be distributed by Supreme Council.

The Columbian Award If throughout the course of the fraternal year you have completed all of the general program activities and all of the administrative requirements you will have earned the Columbian Award. To receive the award all you have to do is complete the Form SP7 and send it to the Supreme Council Office. You have accomplished all the necessary work why not receive the award.

Individual Awards Honorees of the Year Six Diocesan Awards - One State Award One award will be given to an outstanding individual in each of the six (6) Diocese for each of the following categories: Knight, Family, Lady, Volunteer, Blue Coat, Chaplain, Religious, and Youth. An overall state award honoree will be chosen from each category. Each of the State Award winners will receive one (1) complimentary room for the Saturday night stay at the State Convention and two (2) banquet tickets. There will be forty-eight (48) Diocesan and eight (8) State Awards for the Honorees of the Year.

State Officer of the Year “Through Him, With Him, In Him” Award The “Through Him, With Him, In Him” award will be presented to the State Officer whose Diocese has the highest amount of council participation in the State General Program and the highest net increase in Membership. There will be one (1) State Officer designated as the “Through Him, With Him, In Him” award winner.

CONDUCTING A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM In order to be successful during the implementation of the “Through Him, In Him, With Him” State General Program, a “Positive Service” approach must be stressed to your council membership. History has shown that when councils actively conduct a comprehensive activity program for their members, the result is often membership growth. Each council program director (often the Deputy Grand Knight) along with the various activity chairmen is encouraged to promote this program with “Positive Service” in mind. Our state program is designed to allow all councils, regardless of size, the opportunity to “MAX” the program with the least amount of reporting effort. No goal is too great if your council leaders are well organized and confident of attaining success. Assemble your council program director and chairs to review the new ideas, activities and programs that will promote your success in the “Through Him, In Him, With Him” state program. Councils that strive for success must be well organized, plan accordingly and properly execute their plans. In order to conduct a successful council activity program stressing positive service, the following guidelines should be used: 1. READ THE “THROUGH HIM, IN HIM, WITH HIM” PROGRAM BOOK OR ON-LINE VERSION MOST OF THIS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON THE OHIO STATE COUNCIL WEB SITE (www.kofcohio.org). There is no substitute for knowing and understanding the program presented. Please read the entire program and review the program areas with your council leaders. Understand the contest “guidelines,” the reporting requirements, and the necessary due dates. 2. APPOINT PROGRAM CHAIRMEN. The Grand Knight and the program director should appoint a chairman for each of the EIGHT (8) program areas. If possible, assign co-chairmen to assist in the programs and sub programs. 3. REPORT CHAIRMEN TO THE SUPREME COUNCIL (Form # 365). Each of your program chairmen should be listed on Supreme Form #365 and forwarded to Supreme Council before September 1 (can submit from www.kofc.org). In this way, each chairman will be placed on the Supreme mailing lists for program information.

PROVIDE PROGRAM CHAIRMEN WITH PROGRAM HANDBOOKS OR ON-LINE VERSION. Make sure that each of your program chairmen has a copy of their respective sections of the “Through Him, In Him, With Him” state activity program and the “Surge with Service” Supreme booklet. Find the on-line version at (www.kofcohio.org).

5. CONDUCT A PROGRAM PLANNING MEETING WITH YOUR CHAIRMEN. All of your council’s program chairmen should meet with the Grand Knight and the council program director to plan and discuss their program for the fraternal year. Select and schedule your planned activities so that you are conducting a comprehensive program throughout the year and not just over a few months. See proposed agenda on page 32. 6. PLAN AND CREATE AN OUTLINE OR MATRIX FOR ALL PLANNED ACTIVITIES. List all program or activities that your director and chairmen have decided to accomplish during the fraternal year. Lay out these activities on a monthly calendar to prevent an overload of programs in certain months and none in other months. Please refer to the Program Activity Summary Sheet in the general program for a comprehensive, onepage layout of the general state program activities by program area for reference (found on page 28 of this booklet). 7. HOLD A MONTHLY REVIEW MEETING. Each of your program chairmen needs to report to the program director the activities that they have conducted on a monthly basis. The deadline for reporting the bi-monthly online activity reports is the fifth of the month of the next reporting period. It is appropriate to conduct this meeting during the last week of the reporting period to review the activities that will or have been reported and to plan the activities for the upcoming months. It is suggested to give progress reports at council meeting. 8. SUBMIT YOUR BI-MONTHLY REPORTS ON TIME. To assure that your council receives credit for the activities completed during a two-month period, make sure that each report is submitted online no later than the fifth of the month of the following reporting period. Reports received after the fifth of that month will be given credit but will be recorded as “late.” Late reports will be taken into consideration as a tiebreaker for those councils in the running for the state council awards. 9. STRIVE TO EARN A STATE AWARD. There are many Ohio State Council awards that will be presented at the annual state convention recognizing the excellent efforts that many councils display during the state general program year. Each Grand Knight with his leadership team is encouraged to set goals to achieve as many of these awards as possible.

2015 - 2017 “Through Him, With Him, In Him” Ohio State General Program Now is the time to start organizing your council’s efforts and develop a great activity program that promotes council member involvement, positive service, and fellowship. An active council is a viable and growing council. Your program director, chairmen, and council members are invited to join together to promote, enjoy and have fun with the 2015-2017 “Through Him, With Him, In Him” Ohio State Council state general program.

CONDUCTING THE PLANNING MEETING – PROPOSED AGENDA The best way to set an enthusiastic and dynamic tone for the entire year’s activity schedule is to have an early program-planning meeting. This meeting should be held as soon as all of your chairmen appointments have been made. The following is a proposed agenda for this important step in becoming a very successful and active council. 1. Review all of the successful activities from the previous year AND analyze the reasons for their success. 2. Decide which activities will be repeated in this program year. Make sure that emphasis is placed on programs that meet your parish, community, council, and membership needs. 3. Discuss ways to develop new, unusual and exciting activities for the upcoming program year. If necessary, have the chairmen appoint assistant co-chairmen. 4. Establish tentative dates for projects and mark them on your program calendar. Make sure that these dates fit the state program dates outlined in the general program. 5. Review your council roster and match members to activities that best fit their personality and background and write their names next to the activity. Call the member and explain the activity and why they would be good at participating in it and ask them to volunteer to help with the activity. 6. Incorporate public relations activities into as many of your programs as possible. 7. Arrange a reporting mechanism with each of your chairmen so that your program reports are properly submitted on-line by the due date. 8. Prepare a schedule for all future review meetings. Be sure to develop a council calendar for all your scheduled activities and distribute it to all council officers and chairmen.

2015 – 2017 CHURCH ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” The theme of “Through Him, With Him, In Him” is a perfect fit for the Church Activities Program. Through the participation and promotion of the Sacraments, assisting other parish groups, and working closely with the pastor and associates, your council will impact and be able to show others in your parish communities what the Knights of Columbus represent. Commitment, charity, faith, and loyalty to our parish are all qualities that touch the lives of others and allow us to live up to our mission as Brother Knights. As Knights of Columbus, our duty is to lead by example, support our parishes, and encouraging fellow Catholics to be involved. Being an active Council in your parish community, you increase the ability to gain new members. The more people know about the Knights of Columbus, the more likely they may want to join our Order. In order to achieve the maximum number of points for this program, a Council must complete 5 out of the 11 possible activities for a grand total of 100 points. Complete 5 out of the 11 Church Activities for 20 points each (100 points); one of these programs should include a Vocations Activity. · Council Choice Activities may be used as an elective for an appropriate Church or Vocations Activity. Councils should report through the State website at:: http://www.kofcohio.org, log on to the State Website and from the “Programs” menu click “Enter Programs”.

Activity #1 Parish Support Group Recognition Each of our parishes are composed of many types of ministry and service groups that help make our parishes vibrant and ongoing. Our parish priests rely heavily on these individuals and groups to provide the many services necessary to accommodate the needs of all our parishioners. Many are called to utilize their talents but often go unnoticed for their service. Since the Knights understand the importance of true service to God and community, recognizing and providing some form of a “Thank You” would be most appreciated. Some possibilities or examples of showing appreciation include: · ·

Organize an Altar Servers Appreciation event or recognition for our young people who help celebrate our weekly masses. Show appreciation to our religious education teachers for their influence of the faith formation of our children and the promotion of our Catholic ideals and values. Provide a certificate of appreciation, thank you cards or some other appropriate gesture. Sponsor a Lay Minister appreciation dinner or recognition. Identify any other special groups or individuals that fit this category of continuing to offer their time and talent to the overall welfare of your parish community to qualify for this step.

Activity #2 Religious Devotion(s) Throughout the year, your Council may schedule a variety of devotions that promote our faith and involvement of our members within our church environment. Praying and demonstrating our Catholic values together are an important part in growing closer to our fellow brother knights and their families especially in today’s society. Additional devotions outside our weekly Sunday obligations enable us to grow spiritually while continuing to nurture the unity and fraternal side of our order. To earn credit for this step, your council needs to plan, conduct, and participate in one or more of the activities which follow: ·

Schedule a first Saturday of the month morning mass and invite your fellow knights and their families to celebrate the Eucharist together. After mass, take time to socialize and have a small brunch or breakfast. Schedule a time to recite a rosary to commemorate feast days, pray for vocations or protection for our valued troops overseas, or for other special intentions. Have your council participate in perpetual or a special adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This silent time talking to our Lord enriches your closeness to God the Father and helps put your daily issues in perspective. Have your council members participate in a weekly Stations of the Cross service during Lent. Sponsor a Marian Hour of Prayer service Sponsor or assist with a Devine Mercy Day program Plan a Memorial Mass in November, or whenever appropriate, to recognize your departed Brother Knights. Personally invite the widows to this solemn occasion. Request Fourth Degree involvement to act as an honor guard and prepare a short prayer or ceremony in remembrance. Identify any other special devotions that fit this category of demonstrating our faith and Catholicism that qualify for this activity.

Activity #3 “Keep Christ in Christmas” Campaign At Christmas we honor the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. In today’s world, the holiday season is filled with all sorts of advertising hype and commercialization and the reason for the season is somewhat forgotten. Each year the Knights take a leading role in reminding society that Christmas is first and foremost a holy and joyous day. As Catholic families, we can take a pro-active approach to the season by actively participating in a variety of “Keep Christ in Christmas” campaigns. To earn credit for this activity, your council needs to participate in one or more of the activities shown below: ·

Sponsor a “Keep Christ in Christmas” promotion. Sponsor a Billboard in your community, distribute car magnets or yard signs. Promote Advent wreaths in your council bulletin as a means for families to mark this special time of preparation for the coming of Christ’s birth. 35

Promote the use of religious themed Christmas Cards by your members and members of your parish. Take out an advertisement in a local newspaper promoting the theme to “Keep Christ in Christmas”. Sponsor spot announcements on radio or television. Conduct an essay or picture contest that promotes Christ in Christmas with parish school or religious education classes. Order and display or distribute “Keep Christ In Christmas” printed materials available from the Supreme Council Supply Department.

Activity #4 One Parish - One Community Our Parish landscapes are quickly changing today. We are either growing or being combined with other parishes. Our Pastors are being stretched in their duties and our lives are becoming busier. We run the risk of growing apart in our parish community. So now more than ever, we must become more close-knit with our parish family. We must build our parish community by reaching out and helping in areas designed to promote our parish, council, church and faith. To earn credit for this activity your council needs to: · ·

Create and/or participate in a Parish Festival, Carnival or Picnic or other parish annual event. Plan & host an after Mass Parish social event such as Coffee & Donuts, an Ice Cream Social, a Christmas or Easter Seasonal parish event, a program involving the Parish school or CCD Program. Volunteer to serve on a transition committee that oversees new Parish growth or the combining of two or more parishes.

Activity #5 Deepen Our Faith What are we doing to deepen our faith? The Year of Faith can be a time of intense renewal and of getting back to the basics of who we are as Catholics. It is also our goal to deepen and strengthen the faith of our Catholic people in their weekly quest to live as Jesus calls us to in service to all. We are invited as Catholics to pause and reflect on the value and brilliance of the ways in which the light of the world, Jesus Christ, gathers us, forms us and encourages us to act in the world. As Knights of Columbus, we are being called to be living examples to not only build up the family of Christ but to evangelize and spread his light throughout the world. We as a council can assist our Brother Knights and help them to “continue to form our knowledge of our holy religion” by: · ·

Establishing a regular study group to learn and relearn about our Catholic Faith. Create and maintain a council lending library of religious books, videos, and religious materials. The Supreme Council media section has many materials available to councils. Once your council accumulates a library of materials, lend them out to members and parishioners. 36

Publish articles with knowledge of our religion in the monthly council newsletter, (i.e.) The Ten Commandments, The Seven Sacraments, The beatitudes, short stories about the lives of notable Saints etc. Invite your Council Chaplain to put regular monthly articles about our faith and religion in the monthly council newsletter.

2015 – 2017 VOCATIONS ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” “We as men of faith are called through Baptism to grow and increase in faith. We are thereby summoned to serve as witnesses to that faith in our daily lives, in the lives of our families, and in the lives of others throughout our communities.” A vocation is a calling from God. We as brother knights have always been supportive of our programs for vocations. Councils have the options to do a variety of programs to support vocations. Some are; the RSVP program, Pennies for Heaven, and the Roundtable. Below is a program that I would like to see your councils getting involved in. with and that would be to recognize the Sisters and Nuns within our communities. Activity #8 Support our Sisters and Nuns Take a Sister/Nun out to dinner. These ladies take a vow to serve God. Let’s look back to Mother Teresa, she never asked for herself, but for others. Our Theme “Through Him, With Him, and In Him” is what these holy ladies are living in their daily lives. We should all be so humble to see what the Sisters / Nuns do for our Church, schools and community. It’s time we honor these ladies that have given their lives to serve God, the church and anyone they meet. To receive points you need to hold a special event, Nuns or Sisters Night Out. This can be a special dinner, or play, a special gathering. If your church only has a few sisters take them out for the evening, present them with a special gift. The choice is yours. This needs to be a Council or a District event. It should not be a Chapter or Diocese event. To receive points send a detailed report to the State Church Director of what your council did to honor these ladies for all they do. Send pictures if possible. Let him know how many brothers attended the event and how many took an active part in planning the program. This doesn’t have to be a member’s only bring your wives along for the evening. I will be asking the Church Director when you report this event to let me know what was done to honor these ladies that have given so much.

Activity #9 RSVP – Financial Assistance to Seminarians and Religious The RSVP (Refund Support to Vocations Program) of Supreme gives Councils an incentive to provide Seminarians or Novices with financial and moral support. RSVP creates direct link between Knights and Seminarians. This Supreme Council Program refunds $100.00 for every $500.00 given to a Seminarian or Novice. The maximum refund a council can receive each year is $400.00. Councils should complete Supreme Council form #2863 and submit it between June 1st and June 30th for your refund. Remember to receive reimbursement from Supreme Council you must submit form #2863 along with a copy of the cancelled check (front and back). To receive credit for this activity please, report it to the Church Director by April 1st. 38

Activity #10 Parish Round Table If your council serves more than one parish you should consider having a Roundtable with the other Parishes. This program is encouraged by the Supreme Council in order to develop closer ties between the Council and Parishes. To receive credit for this activity: · · · · ·

2015 – 2017 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” As we grow “Through Him, With Him, In Him” so does our presence in the community. We should be giving back to our community through our charitable work, and fraternalism with others. Every council should be involved in giving back and making a difference in its community. We as Knights of Columbus are called to share our talents, support each other and use our God-given talents to better our communities. Our communities need to prosper through our actions while keeping the true Christian mission alive. As time goes by our veterans are in need of support through social interaction or monetary needs. Veterans and our active soldier programs fall under the Community Program. Please support and report your veteran activities under this program. In order to achieve the maximum number of points in this program, a Council must complete 5 out of the 11 possible activities for a total of 100 points. ü Complete 5 out of the 11 community activities for 20 points each (100 points); one of these should be a veteran’s activity. ü Council Choice Activities may be used as an elective for an appropriate Community or Veterans activity. ü Councils should report through the State website at: http://www.kofcohio.org, log on to the State Website and from the “Programs” menu click “Enter Programs”.

Activity #12 Habitat for Humanity Helping build a house for someone has some great rewards for your council and the Brother Knights that help with this activity as you are working “Through Him, With Him, In Him” to support those less fortunate than ourselves. · · ·

Activity #14 VA Support Our veterans have sacrificed much for our country. We in turn should try and help them throughout their daily lives. · · · · ·

Your assistance may include one or more of the following. Building a wheel chair ramp at their place of residence Assisting them in a VA Hospital Visiting them in a nursing home Providing them with transportation to and from medical appointments

Set up some type of activity in your community to enhance their lives and assist them in almost any way possible. Remember to let them know that they are appreciated for the sacrifices they have made for us and our country. To receive credit for this activity give a brief description what was done and how many people attended and participated in the event. Remember to include any fund raising that was done for this activity. Send your report to the State Community Director using the State Website. Activity #15 Support Our Troops The men and women of our Armed Forces could always use a little bit of home comforts in their lives. To make them feel at home even when they are away from home your Council could do any of the following. ·

Take up collections of toiletries, snacks, AAA, AA, A, C or D batteries, or any other home comfort that we take for granted in our daily lives.

Assist or partner with another civic group with the collection and sending of these items to our troops abroad. 43

Keep these men and women in your council’s monthly prayer list.

Activity #16 Council Level Patriotic Activity The Fourth Degree is our Patriotic Degree of our honored Order and can be easily seen when they are dressed in full regalia. Many times this is only what the community sees. As council we can also show our community what our Order is about. This program should be unique and not the same submitted for a Fourth Degree program activity. The program should bring out a show of support for our country and show how much it means to us. To receive credit for this activity, list the type of program that was conducted and the number of participants in the program. Send your report to the State Community Director using the State web site.

Activity #17 Blood Drive There is always a need for whole blood collection drives in our communities. Your donation of a mere pint of blood is able to touch and help so many peoples’ lives. This activity will allow your council to help in giving the gift of a life time. To receive credit for this activity schedule and conduct a blood drive within your council, your community, or your parish. Report the organization that you worked with to complete this project. Report how many pints were collected and how many Brother Knights participated. Report your activity to the State Community Director on the State web site.

Activity #18 Participate in a Soup Kitchen or Food Pantry The homeless and the less fortunate of your communities sometimes go daily or weekly without a home cooked well balanced meal. You may assist the less fortunate within your community by starting up or helping out at a soup kitchen. You may help out in a soup kitchen by volunteering to serve meals to the homeless and put a smile on the face of the less fortunate in your area. Another way to assist the less fortunate within your community could be accomplished by starting up or making donations to a food pantry. You may start and operate a food pantry of your own or collect donations for an existing one. To receive credit for this activity, report the organization that you worked with to complete this project. Report the estimated meals served or the amount of food collected. Always include the amount of time spent and how many Brother Knights participated in this activity. Report your activity to the State Community Director on the State web site. 44

Activity #19 Adopt a Highway Program Many communities throughout the United States are strapped for funding to clean up the debris scattered along the local highway areas. The Adopt a Highway Program has been a useful way for organizations such as the Knights of Columbus to help beautify and clean up the natural environment. Volunteer with your local community officials to adopt a stretch of highway within your community to help clean up our environment. To receive credit for this activity list the section of roadway or highway that was cleaned, the number of participants, and the dates the clean ups were conducted. Report your activity to the State Community Director using the State web site.

Activity #20 Blue Coat of the Year The men and women of our safety forces are sometimes taken for granted. Our police, fire, and emergency service personal put their lives on the line every day they go into work. We as Knights of Columbus need to show them how much they are appreciated. Although many are qualified to receive this top honor there is one person in your community that has gone a little bit further in helping out the community, and this is the person that should be recognized for their service. Submit your nomination to the State Community Director by sending a hard copy to the State Community Director and submit it also on the state web site, by April 1st.

2015-2017 COUNCIL ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” It is through council programs and activities that we can help foster a sense of fraternity and family in the Knights of Columbus community. As a council, we strive to be the best Catholic men that we can be, for our families and for each other. Inclusion of family in council activities helps maintain enthusiasm, builds pride in membership, and forms a strong foundation upon which the council can continue to grow. As Knights of Columbus, we should hold each other accountable to our faith and promote the ideals of Columbianism through our charitable work. “As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.” – Proverbs 27:17. Promote council activities that allow council members to build off one another, grow in their faith, and ultimately, grow the Order. “Through Him, With Him, In Him,” our councils and their members can achieve greatness. Publicity and communication is an important part in keeping your council members frequently informed and letting others know about the Knights of Columbus. Use your local newspaper, local television stations, e-mail, the internet, and social media to tell about the events you have planned and the great work your council does. In order to achieve the maximum number of points in this program, a Council must complete 5 out of the 12 possible activities for a grand total of 100 points. ü Complete 5 out of the 12 Council Activities for 20 points each. Activity #23 Special Olympics Bringing joy to others provides an incredible, positive effect on all involved, but when you bring joy to a special needs child, it means so much more. These children are too often left out of other activities, and this is their chance to shine! The Knights of Columbus believe that the Special Olympics are nearly unparalleled in their ability to show the intrinsic worth and dignity of every single human being. It’s not just about building strength and character in the athletes and participants, but also includes being inspired by the determination and true sense of God’s love that pours out of all involved. For this activity, hold a Special Olympics competition, donate, sponsor, or help to receive the points for this activity. To receive the credit for this activity, document the event that the council participated in, including photographs if possible, and report it to the State Council/Public Relations Director.

Activity #24 Knight of the Year Every council has many Brother Knights that help the council achieve its goals and demonstrate our faith. They should be recognized for their work and should be honored monthly as Knight of the Month. This particular activity is also in the Surge… With Service program. From these monthly honorees, select one Brother Knight and submit his name for Knight of the Year. To receive credit for this activity, report it on the state web site and then send a hard copy with the nominee’s qualifications to the State Council/Public Relations Director by April 1st.

Activity #25 Ladies Appreciation As we all know, the success of a council comes from the support of everyone in it. The best support comes from our Ladies. Show how much they are appreciated by having a special activity for them, such as a dinner at the council with the Brother Knights cooking and serving them. Make it special, and remind the ladies of your dedication to your faith, by writing a prayer to them, or praying a living rosary with them. To receive credit for this activity, report the event, with details, to the State Council/Public Relations Director.

Activity #26 Participate in a State Activity There are many activities that the State Council supports. Participation in these activities helps bring people together in Unity and Fraternity to have a good time. Some of these events include the State Bowling Tournament, State Camp Out, Golf Tournament, Basketball, and Horseshoes. Why not get a team together and participate in one of these sporting events, or grab a tent and go camping? To receive credit for this activity, sign up for one of these events and report it on the state web site to the State Council/Public Relations Director.

Activity #27 Council Newsletter/Website Keep council members informed of the latest news and activities going on in your council so that they can find an activity to attend and help with. Today, there are so many ways to get the word out. Whether it’s a web site, newsletter, e-mail, or social media, tell us how you communicate with your council members. To receive credit for this activity, submit your report on the state web site to the State Council/Public Relations Director.

Activity #28 Multiple Council Activity 50

Charity, Unity, and Fraternity within the Knights of Columbus extend far beyond your own council. Work with your District Deputy and network at State Tour Meetings or Chapter Meetings to find another council that you can team up with to hold an activity together. This activity should not be covered by any other reported council activity. We all know the importance of Unity and how coming together as one can be so powerful. This is a great way to build fraternity among your council members and meet new councils in the process. To receive credit for this activity, submit your report on the state web site, indicating which councils were involved in this activity, to the State Council/Public Relations Director.

Activity #29 Host a Speaker We can all benefit from learning more about our Catholic faith. As Catholic gentlemen, we are constantly seeking ways, through the Knights of Columbus, to put our faith into action with other like-minded men. To help us in this endeavor, organize and plan a Knights of Columbus sponsored night for a speaker to present on an aspect of our faith. Open this to the council, the parish, and the community. This is also a great opportunity to recruit new members. Consider holding a social gathering after the speaker is finished and have council members ready to talk up membership! To receive credit for this activity, submit your report on the state web site, including the name of the speaker, their credentials, and their topic to the State Council/Public Relations Director.

Activity #30 Submit a Buckeye Bulletin Article Submit a story for possible publication in the Buckeye Bulletin. A goal of Public Relations is letting others know the good things that your council does. When your council produces a special activity, let people know about it. 2015-2017 FAMILY ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” Brother Knights and their families are what makes up a council. Both Knight and family members rely on each other for companionship, friendship, love, and comfort. The “Through Him, With Him, In Him” Family and Fraternal program was designed to accomplish just this. We as a family of Knights must pray together, feed the needy families, and help families with tuition assistance for catholic education. Remember to welcome new families into your council. Recognize the Brother Knights and their families that do so much for your council. The following programs are designed to be helpful in your council fulfilling this program. In order to achieve the maximum number of points in this program, a Council must complete 5 out of the 12 possible activities for a total of 100 points. ü Complete 5 out of the 12 Family Activities for 20 points each. (100 points) ü The Council Choice activity can be either an appropriate Family or Fraternal Insurance activity not listed below. ü Councils should report through the State website at: http://www.kofcohio.org, log on to the State Website and from the “Programs” menu click “Enter Programs”. Throughout the course of the family program, suggestions are recommended to assist you. If you are still in need of suggestions, take a moment to read the “Surge with Service Program” Book given to you by the Supreme Council and available online (www.kofc.org). Activity #34 Families that Pray Together… Faith begins in the family. For most of us, our earliest memories involve family and faith (think Midnight Mass). Families are strengthened through praying together at home and at mass. · · · ·

Celebrate a special mass for families and invite the parish. Have a family meal and prayer service. Pray the Rosary as a family. Do this at least 3 times to receive points. Utilize the “Family of the Month” program from the Surge with Service program.

Activity #35 Families at Service Together, we improve our communities and inspire others to join us. Families, especially families with children, serving together are the most inspiring. Our family that is the Knights of Columbus has a basis of charity and service and an obligation to include our families so we raise children that believe in serving and loving others. · · · ·

Do a service project that includes the family. Volunteer as families to clean the church, a cemetery, a local shrine, etc. Christmas carol or visit a local nursing home or one of Ohio’s Veterans’ Homes Clean up a community property (park, roadside, school, etc.)

Activity #36 Honor Thy Father (and Mother) In a world that continues to devalue the role of the father in children’s lives, the Knights of Columbus need to be the champion and example of strong, faithful fathers and husbands. Our children are our most valuable asset because they are the future. The future of our faith, the future of our order, and the future leaders of our communities and our country and every child deserves a strong father figure in their lives. · · · · ·

Host and event to honor and thank the fathers (or mothers) of your members. Host or support a Father’s Day (or Mother’s Day) brunch Have an event that honors Grandparents Coordinate an opportunity for families to investigate their family tree Supply gifts for children in catechism to give their father on Father’s Day

Activity #37 Food for Families Food for Families is also a Supreme program in the “Surge for Service” program. Some councils cannot afford to meet the requirements of the Supreme Program, the most important part of this program is feeding the families of the community. Here are a couple of ideas to help you with this activity. · · Hold a food collection in your council and parish and designate where the food will go. · Help out at a local food bank. · Host or help out at a community meal in the council area. 57

Activity #38 Memorial Mass To honor our fallen Brother Knights and support their families is the greatest duty as Knights that we can do. · · ·

Schedule a day with your Chaplain or Parish Priest. Invite the families of the deceased brother. Invite non-members or former members to show them the support we give.

Activity #39 Family Activity The success of your Council is achieved through the help received from the families in your Council. Celebrate your families with a program honoring the family structure and include everyone in your Council. Do a service project that includes the family. Celebrate a special mass for families and invite the parish to it. Have a family meal and prayer service. Activity #40 Tuition Assistance As we can all remember growing up and going to Catholic Grade School. The experience and memories stay with you for a long time. Why not continue sharing those feelings by helping a family with the cost of their education. With the cost going up every year it is hard for some families to send their children to a Catholic Grade School. Some council’s already give out scholarships. I have known of people adopting a child to help with that child’s tuition for the entire school year. · · Talk to the Principal of the school, or the Pastor to find a child in need. · If you cannot support a child try donating some of the supplies the school may need for the year. · Hold a fundraiser to support this activity.

Sponsor children in the Parish CCD or PSR Classes with assistance in class fees. · To receive credit for this activity, report it to the State Family Director on the State website with all the information of the program. ·

Activity #41 Fraternal Night Help keep your Brother Knights informed on what is happening within the Knights of Columbus Insurance Programs, Estate Planning, and Funeral Arrangements. This is also one that you should invite the parish to so that they can receive the same information. · Invite your insurance agent to the meeting for his presentation on the services the he can offer. · Invite a lawyer to help explain any matters for new families or even older ones. · Invite the local Funeral Director for a brief presentation of their services. Activity #42 Family of the Year Every council has a family that means so much to them. Give them the recognition they deserve. · · · · ·

2015-2017 CULTURE OF LIFE ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” It is with great pleasure that we unveil the 2015-2017 Culture of Life Activities Program in our great state of Ohio, as an integral part of State Deputy Bob Collins' "Through Him, With Him, In Him" general program. As our Lord admonished us to be that shining light upon the hill, this is once again our opportunity to shine a light upon the sanctity of human life across its entire spectrum-from conception to natural death-and to defend the most innocent and defenseless of our brothers and sisters. And beginning with State Deputy Collins' administration, the Culture of Life program is being expanded to include such critically important areas of focus as Religious Freedom, Marriage, and Teen Chastity. As the value of sacred human life is ever more questioned and subjected to increasingly diabolical attacks-almost on a daily basis-it becomes increasingly imperative for the Knights of Columbus to stand in the breach and tell the world that we will never, ever retreat from the front lines, whether in defense of the innocent unborn, marriage defined as the union of a man and a woman, standing up for our religious liberties, or safe guarding the purity and innocence of our youth. As St. John Paul II declared, we brother knights will wield the power of our “strong right arm of the Church” to defend these most cherished ideals. Your newly revised, expanded, and topical State Culture of Life Activities program will provide the framework to guide you and your council in doing just that. In order to achieve the maximum number of points in this program, a council must complete 5 out of the 10 possible activities for a grand total of 100 points. Activity #45 Ultrasound Initiative Nearly 90% of women considering an abortion decide to keep their babies once they’ve had a chance to see an ultrasound of their babies in utero. For that reason, the Supreme Council in 2009 embarked on its Ultrasound Initiative where Supreme will match up to 50% of the cost of an ultrasound machine for a qualified pregnancy care center provided local and state councils raise 50% of the cost themselves. To date, nearly 500 machines have been provided to pregnancy centers across the U.S. with 2530 here in Ohio. Councils can participate in the efforts of another council’s or chapter’s Ultrasound Initiative and claim this activity as a Culture of Life activity. To receive credit for this activity, submit the following information to the State Culture of Life Director via the online report form through the state council website: Councils should conduct a local fundraising effort specifically for this Initiative, and not just write a check. Include the date, location, and the number of participants.

Please include how the activity was promoted and any details of the preparation of this event. Remember to include how many knights and wives took part as well as any photos, articles or supporting documentation. Councils must raise & contribute a minimum of 50% of the cost of the machine. Document all your efforts and submit an online report to the State Culture of Life Director. In order to receive points for this activity, submit all the details of your program on-line at www.kofcohio.org during the report period the activity occurred. *The Ultrasound Initiative is a Supreme Council “Featured” Program. By doing this one activity to the extent that is required by Supreme Council, your council can earn 100 points to meet all the requirements for the Culture of Life Program Area as well as for the Supreme Columbian Award. To receive credit for this step and to secure 50% funding from Supreme Council the following conditions must be satisfied: In a manner prescribed by Supreme, submit documentation showing that the following steps have been completed. Consult and follow the entire official Ultrasound Initiative Guidelines at: www.kofc.org/un/en/prolife/ultrasound/guidelines.html. ·

Identify a local, qualified, and licensed pro-life pregnancy care center.

Ensure that the center is affiliated with a medical doctor who will oversee operations of the machine. Ensure that the machine will be staffed by licensed and experienced medical personnel. Ensure that the center is properly insured for operation of the machine. Ensure that the center is not anti-Catholic in any way.

Raise a minimum of 50% of the cost of an ultrasound machine that will address the specific needs of the center.

Once the funds for not less than half of the purchase price are raised, submit the invoice or sales order for the ultrasound machine to Supreme, which will match the other half of the purchase price of the machine.

Plan a check presentation or ribbon cutting ceremony to be held when the actual machine arrives or is ready for operation. Be sure to invite your bishop and priests as well as the state deputy and/or other K of C officers and dignitaries. Determine with the pregnancy center which media to invite.

Submit a report to the State Culture of Life Director via the online report form through the state council website, summarizing the program, including how the council raised the funds, the name of the pregnancy center and why it was selected, the date and location of the presentation, dignitaries in attendance, the total number of attendees, and details of any media coverage.

Activity #46 Stand Up for Religious Freedom One of our nation's most cherished and foundational rights is the freedom of religion. However, the secular culture continues to encroach upon our religious liberties with every passing year. If we, as Our Lady's Knights, do not stand up to defend these precious rights alongside Holy Mother Church, who will? To receive credit for this activity, fulfill at least one of the following and submit the information to the State Culture of Life Director via the online report form through the state council website: Council participation in your local Fortnight for Freedom campaign in late June to early July. For details, visit the Fortnight for Freedom webpage: http://fortnight4freedom.org. Celebrate a memorial Mass for SS. Thomas More and John Fisher on June 21 (vigil) or June 22 (their feast day) to open the Fortnight for Freedom. Plan a parish outreach event including a meal a fish fry, a picnic, a pancake breakfast, or a spaghetti supper to raise awareness about the Fortnight and advertise local Fortnight events. Invite a local or national figure to speak to your council or parish about religious liberty. Also, encourage parishioners to read Our First, Most Cherished Liberty, a document of the U.S. Conference of Bishops' Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty. Conduct a postcard campaign to local, state, and federal politicians requesting their assistance in defending religious liberties. Activity #47 40 Days for Life

Since 2007, the 40 Days for Life spring and fall campaigns have saved over nearly 10,000 babies from abortion. The campaigns have been responsible for the closing of over two dozen abortion clinics in over 559 vigil locations across the U.S., Canada, and in over 25 other countries around the globe. Additionally, over 107 abortion clinic workers have quit their jobs and over 59 abortion clinics have closed, including several right here in Ohio. The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America and around the world. To receive credit for this activity, fulfill either one of the following and submit the information to the State Culture of Life Director via the online report form through the state council website: Contact your local Right to Life chapter to determine if a local 40 Days for Life campaign is scheduled. If so, schedule at least one day during the 40 day period when your council and its families and friends will provide peaceful, non-confrontational prayer coverage at the selected abortion clinic. Provide the number of council members who participated and the total hours spent at the clinic. If there is no local 40 Days for Life campaign, contact the national campaign leadership team at www.40daysforlife.com and sponsor a local campaign. Activity #48, March for Life or Local Rally for Life January 22, 1973 will forever be remembered across the United States as the date of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy across the United States. The national March for Life in Washington D.C. on or around January 22 has continued to attract hundreds of thousands of pro-life families and individuals from every state in the Union to protest the wrong-headed, evil decision of the Court that is now responsible for nearly 55 million aborted babies ever since. The time spent traveling to and from a March for Life gives members the opportunity to further educate marchers about life issues and to explain to prospective members the many ways in which the Knights of Columbus is working to build a Culture of Life. State and local pro-life organizations also hold rallies and events on their home turfs to coincide with the March for those unable to trek to Washington. To receive credit for this activity, the event must occur in January. Submit the following information to the State Culture of Life Director via the online report form through the state council website:

Provide details on the number of council members and families who attended the event as well as financial assistance-if any-provided by the council. Provide specifics of the state, local, or national event attended and whether or not the Council sponsored a bus. Provide details of how the event was publicized. In order to receive points for this activity, submit all the details of your program on-line at www.kofcohio.org during the report period the activity occurred. *A council sponsored March for Life is a Supreme Council “Featured” Program. By doing this one Activity to the extent that is required by Supreme Council, your council can earn 100 points to meet all the requirements for the Culture of Life Program Area as well as for the Supreme Columbian Award. To receive a full credit for the activity (100 points), you should keep the following in mind when reporting. All such criteria must be completed: Councils must involve 100 council/family members/parishioners in a local, state, or national March for Life. Councils must sponsor or co-sponsor this activity, not just have members participate in another organization’s efforts. Use the Supreme “Featured Programs March for Life Worksheet” to report activities to Supreme and provide a copy with your online report.

Activity #49 K of C Day of the Unborn Child Promote the annual Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child, held on the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25 (or as mandated by your local diocese). Knights and their families should pray for the return of respect and protection of the unborn child. To receive credit for this activity, the event must occur in March within close proximity to March 25. Select from the following suggestions for this program and report to the State Culture of Life Director: Plan and sponsor a Mass for the Unborn (may include your Fourth Degree Color Guard). Consider a pro-life talk with light refreshments after. Pray the Rosary as an assembled family for unborn children. Hold a prayer vigil in front of a statue of our Blessed Mother Mary while praying a Rosary for the Unborn. Activity #50 National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children Since September of 2013, the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children has become an annual event calling on pro-life Americans to honor the gravesites of our unborn brothers and sisters. Solemn prayer vigils are conducted at these gravesites, of

which there are 45 across the United States, as well as at a myriad of other sites dedicated in memory of aborted children, including a great many here in Ohio. To receive credit for this activity, the council should host a memorial service at an approved site, either by itself or in tandem with another council. Activity #51 Celebrate World Marriage Day Since 1981, World Marriage Day has been celebrated on the second Sunday in February across the U.S. and around the globe. World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. The critical nature of World Marriage Day becomes more and more important with the increasing onslaught of attacks on marriage and the family. K of C councils are strongly encouraged to proclaim to the nation and the world their undying support for the institution of marriage. To receive credit for this activity, plan and hold a World Marriage Day celebration on the second Sunday in February (or close to it) and include at least two of the suggested ideas as outlined on the WMD website: http://wmd.wwme.org/ideas.html. Submit event details, along with the number of brother knights involved (minimum of 3), to the State Culture of Life Director via the online report form through the state council website.

Activity #52 Promote Teen Chastity Our youth are under diabolical attack, worse than ever before, from the dominant culture including television, movies, and of course, social media. During their impressionable teen years, it is so critically important that our young people be taught the beauty of purity and chastity and that they be equipped with the necessary instruction and counsel to protect them. St. John Paul II's monumental Theology of the Body, consisting of 129 catechetical lectures outlining his integrated vision of the human person-body, soul, and spirit, has now been adapted to teens to provide them with the real-world instruction and support they need as they approach adult life. Theology of the Body for Teens is a 12-segment program that uses John Paul's vision for love and life to answer the tough questions kids are asking about God, sex, and the meaning of life. It is available in both high school and middle school editions. To receive credit for this activity, have a meeting with your pastor and parish school principal (or parish youth minister if there is no school) to gauge the level of interest in

providing such a program free of charge for the youth of the parish and/or school. 2015-2017 YOUTH ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” The youth of our parishes, communities, and councils are very valuable to us. They are the future leaders, and by keeping involved with them, it will help them see our values, and make a commitment to the Church, Council, and community. 69

As leaders in these areas we should strive to show the youth of our community that a good moral lifestyle is important and assist them to become leaders in their own communities and church. The “Through Him, With Him, In Him” program will help your Council interact with the Youth physically, and spiritually. In order to achieve the maximum number of points in this program, a Council must complete 5 out of the 14 possible activities for a total of 100 points. · · · ·

Complete 5 out of the 14 Youth & Squires Activities for 20 points each (100 points), one of these programs should include a Squires Activity. Activity #55 No Child Goes Hungry This activity can be used in a couple of ways. First hold a food drive for the local food bank. Second either host or volunteer at a community meal that serves families. To help your council raise funds for this activity hold another fundraising event. To receive credit for this activity, please share what kind of event was held, how many were served, or how much food was collected. Then send the report to the State Youth Director on the State website.

Activity #56 Coats for Kids This program has become very popular with the councils in this great State of Ohio. As we all know the weather can change very fast here and can leave some kids without a coat. This is also a Supreme Council “Surge for Service” program. As a featured program you need to follow their guidelines. Some councils cannot meet all the requirements, but still are able to contribute to this activity. If the council cannot do coats maybe you can add to this program with hats and gloves, these are also a need.

To receive credit for this activity report on the State website on how many coats, or hats and gloves were collected and sent to the recipients. Let us also know if a fundraiser was held to support the purchases of these articles. A council sponsored Coats for Kids is a Supreme Council “Featured” Program. By doing this one Activity to the extent that is required by Supreme Council, your council can earn 100 points to meet all the requirements for the Youth Program Area as well as for the Supreme Columbian Award. Activity #57 Soccer Challenge / Free Throw Competition Both of these activities have grown in the numbers of councils and of participants. These two programs are a great way to interact with the children and encourage them as they complete. · The soccer challenge will still have the eight (8) year olds shoot to the State level and the 9 - 14 year olds will shoot thru all competitive levels. · ·

Always order your kits early enough for your council’s competition. Soccer Kits should be ordered in July and your Free Throw Kits ordered in November

The foundation has given over $500,000 away to deserving Catholic High School students. The Ohio Charity Foundation would like to offer one scholarship to every Catholic High School in the Ohio. Activity #59 Boy Scout Eagle Scout Project The Boy Scouts run a great program. It is very special when a Scout receives the highest award obtainable through scouting. Support from your Council could assist him and make his dream project become a reality. Your council may contribute financial aid, labor, or the material needed for his project. Report a detailed activity to the State Youth Director on exactly how you helped a Boy Scout with this activity on the State Website.

Activity #60 Drug and Alcohol Abuse Poster Contest The Drug and Alcohol Poster Contest is a Supreme Program to help bring the abuse of drugs and alcohol to the attention of the children in our communities. It gives them the chance to discuss these problems with each other and support each other not to use drugs and overuse alcohol. To complete this activity you will need to order your Drug and Alcohol Abuse Poster Contest kit from Supreme Council in November to have everything in place for council level competition in January. To receive credit for this activity report the number of posters created and a Council Winners List to the State Youth Director on the state website. Activity #61 Youth Service Project To get the youth involved in community service, gather them together, and plan a program where they do something for the elderly, handicapped, or community. This can

be accomplished by cleaning the yard of some of the elderly’s homes, cleaning of the local park, or visiting a nursing home and engaging with the residences. To receive credit for this activity report to the State Youth Director on the website with the details of the activity.

Activity #62 Religious Activity The spiritual life of any child is very important. From Baptism to Confirmation, the Knights can be beneficial to their Catholic beliefs. This can happen by remembrance at their Baptism, thru Confirmation and stating that they will be remembered in the Council’s prayers. The as they approach Graduation help out or sponsor a retreat in their honor. 2015-2017 STATE SQUIRES ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him”

The Columbian Squires are the Youth Organization of the Knights of Columbus. The age to join is 10-17 and you must be a practicing Catholic. The purpose of the Squires is to help the church and community by which they provide service to them. To start a new Circle or reinstitution, you must have 10 applications for membership (form 280) which is sent to the Supreme Council. The Squires run their meetings much like the Knights of Columbus and they have an Investiture Ceremony to bring in new members. We encourage all Squires to take part in State event sponsored Leadership Seminars and Retreats. We have 5 scheduled state athletic tournaments each year (Air soft, Dodge ball, Volleyball, Basketball, and Corn hole). Supreme has a Child Protection Plan which every Circle Counselor must complete. The State Squires finish off the year with a Convention at St’s Peter and Paul Retreat Center in Newark, Ohio. At the Convention they elect new officers, apply for next year’s tournaments, allow for resolutions, and vote on any changes in the program. All these things give the opportunity of each Squire to learn how to run a business meeting, and how to communicate in front of other kids. When the Squire turns 18 he is encouraged to join the Knights of Columbus and is sent a form 100 application from Supreme.

2015 – 2017 MEMBERSHIP ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him…” The Through Him, With Him, In Him… Membership Activities program will give each council the opportunity to keep its council active while growing in numbers and strength. Membership is the key to keeping a council strong; it is the lifeblood of our Order. By having a strong and active Membership Plan you will have a stronger and more vibrant council. Recruiting new members brings in new ideas, new energy and new growth for your council. Retaining those members builds the character of the council and solidifies your programs. Reactivating former Knights builds a stronger sense of fraternity. By coordinating your efforts and utilizing these strategies, you will revitalize your council and bring new energy and new hope to not only our state, but, our Order. Another positive way to increase membership is by developing a new council in areas that can use the influence and leadership of the Knights. We are an enduring organization that promotes the values and ideals of the Catholic faith and we possess good community and church leaders. So let’s share that with other parishes and communities. There are many unchartered parishes out there and many Pastors who are yearning for the help. We can be their saving grace. Look for those areas out there and alert your District Deputies or your Diocesan Membership Coordinators so they can start the process. If we are truly Through Him, With Him, In Him… then our path is already set and our plan is in place. We must have faith in that plan and trust the path. Our brothers from days past had that faith and completed the tasks, which is what built the council, state, and Supreme organization that we enjoy today. We must plow forward with our Membership Plan, Recruiting, Retaining, and Reactivating!!! Below are the first three statewide goals that will lead us in the Through Him, With Him, In Him… state theme. On the pages that follow is an explanation of the Membership Program, its activities and incentives. #70 Father McGivney Church Drive to strengthen our support for the cause of sainthood for Our founder. Complete in August, the month in which Father McGivney was born and died.

#71 October “Columbus Day Weekend preferred” or anytime during the month.

#72 March 29th “Founders Day Weekend preferred” or anytime during the month.

How to Conduct an Effective Membership Drive A coordinated Membership Drive is an all-out effort to maximize your membership teams’ efforts, by canvassing an entire parish on one weekend, gathering the names of prospective new members to follow-up with.

The Preparation Phase ·

Obtain the pastor’s permission to conduct a membership Drive at the church during a specific weekend.

Advertise the event weekly in the parish bulletin, on church doors, and on church bulletin boards up to when it is held.

Order recruitment materials from the Supreme Council Supply Department (allow 6 weeks for delivery).

Inform the insurance representatives about the dates of the recruitment drive.

The Execution Phase ·

Set up information tables at every door of the Church. Have plenty of prospect cards and pencils on hand to distribute to each man as they enter the Church.

Arrange for a membership recruitment announcement to be made during Mass by either the priest or the Grand Knight.

Have brother Knights on hand to answer any questions and to collect prospect referral cards or names and contact information as men leave church with their families.

The Follow-Up Phase ·

Personal contact must be made with every prospect that you collected within 48 HOURS.

Inform and invite each prospect and his family of the date, time and location for the Information night.

Offer transportation if that is the prospect’s limitation.

To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: ·

Your council MUST recruit at least one new member, for any of the statewide membership drives the council chooses who takes his First Degree during the August, one new member who takes his First Degree during the October, or one new member who takes his First Degree during the March State Membership Drive.

The new member must show up on the Supreme Council Membership ReportAugust State Membership Drive by October 1, the October State Membership Drive by December 1, and the March State Membership Drive by May 1. To claim this activity, your council must bring in a total of at least one new member per membership drive.

Activity #73 Spring into Summer Membership Drive July, August, and September are excellent months for your council to push membership. As we spring into the second half of the summer, we still have many picnics, festivals, and Parish events happening. These are great places to go one-onone in the drive for new members. Use your council's summer family activities to invite prospective members into the Knights of Columbus! To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: ·

Your council MUST recruit at least one new member who makes his First Degree in July, August or September.

Activity #74 Welcome Back Brother or Operation Re-Member Old Friends are among the best. Every Knight of Columbus council has old friends, former members who shared the aim and ideals of our Order and who have helped work toward reaching a council's goals. Though they may have left the Order, circumstances change and they may now have the time and the desire to be part of the Knights of Columbus again. They simply need to be asked! The "Welcome Back Brother" or “Operation Re-Member” program is one phase of total recruitment efforts by local councils. This activity, when combined with other membership campaign recruitment efforts, will see the Order welcome more families to ours, enabling a greater sharing of our resources, our charitable work and family fun. Obtain a list of “Former Members” (those who took withdrawals/suspensions) and “Inactive Insurance Members” (those who took withdrawals/suspensions but maintain Knights of Columbus insurance policies) from the Insurance Agent or General Agent. Contact each member by phone and invite them to a Welcome Back Brother” or “Operation Re-Member” night to reintroduce these members to the Order and your council. Inform them of the changes, new programs and activities, and recent council achievements that have occurred. "Welcome Back Brother" or “Operation Re-Member together with regular recruitment efforts to ask relatives, friends, parishioners,

coworkers and all eligible Catholic men to join us, will enable us to meet our State goal for new members during each fraternal year. To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: ·

The re-signed member must show up on the Supreme Council Membership Report.

Activity #75 Recruit a Member at Any Activity We all know that having activity in a council keeps the members coming back. That same rule applies to Potential Members. When your council does any of the activities in the six major programming areas (Church, Council, Community, Family, Youth, Culture of Life) they show that they are a vital and contributing part of their parish and community and hence, attract new members. Everyone wants to belong to an active organization that does worthwhile and rewarding things! To earn the points for this activity, these criteria must be met: · · · · ·

Invite potential members and possibly their families to either attend or participate in ANY activity (from the six major program areas) that your council holds. Make sure you assign a “host or proposer” to this potential member at the activity, so they don’t feel left out or bored. Have FUN! Show him how the Knights benefit from or contribute to the activity. Get the completed Form 100 from the potential member and attend his First Degree with him. The name of the activity that the candidate attended and the date it was held must be reported on the Membership Activities Program Reporting Form.

Activity #76 Recruit at an Open House How to Conduct an Open House An open house provides an opportunity to introduce your council and the Order to a broad audience of prospects at one event. The main objective is to “exhibit your products” – your volunteer service programs, your social and fraternal activities, your membership benefits – that your council and the Order have to offer to members and their families. ·

Appoint a committee to organize an open house.

Set a date and time. Publicize the event in local newspapers, radio, cable television and church bulletins.

Order quantities of promotional materials including “Open House” poster (#2826) from Supply Department at least six weeks in advance.

Compile list of prospective members.

Send open house invitations to prospects and their spouses.

Follow up mailing with a telephone confirmation of receipt and availability to attend events.

As the event approaches, reconfirm all arrangements for site, materials, program, etc.

Arrange for a display of council scrapbooks, awards, programs, activities.

Assign to each attending prospect to a recruiter who will act as host throughout the event. · Welcome committee to greet guests · Introduce officers, members · Grand Knight/membership director should explain council aims/organization · Ask the insurance agent to explain benefits of membership · Show a promotional video · Experience of a Lifetime · Membership Recruitment Flip Chart · Life and Legacy of Father McGivney · Founding to Future ·

Schedule a question/answer session following the video further explaining the Order and the council. Conclude with refreshments.

Make certain host-recruiters ask prospects to join, and assist them in completing Membership Document (#100).

How to Organize a Private Open House A “private open house” provides a comfortable, casual atmosphere in which one or two host recruiters and or wives introduce a prospect and his wife if married to the local council and the Order. ·

Solicit volunteer recruiters to host private open houses in their homes.

Plan a casual event in which a small group gets together to enjoy each other's company and learn about the K of C (coffee and a card game, a barbecue, or brunch, etc.).

Personally invite three to five prospects, making sure the invitation is for husband and wife.

Order the Experience of a Lifetime video at least three weeks prior to your event.

Have Membership Documents (#100) on hand and order other promotional/membership flyers – “As Knights we not only act on faith...” flyer (#4497), “Our Future Knights...” flyer (#9116), “The Potential of a Man...” flyer (4496), “What this organization stands for...” booklet (#4495), “Did You Know?” flyer (#1267), Family Fraternal Benefits flyer (#2761), Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit flyer (#2773), Columbia magazine – to distribute along with council newsletter.

Show the video and discuss council activities and benefits. Encourage the host spouse to discuss the fun and benefits of family activities.

INVITE prospective families to join!

Assist prospects in completing Membership Documents.

Inform prospects of the Admission Committee meeting, and the First Degree date, and make arrangements to escort them to the degree. (Plan First Degree within two weeks off private open house.)

Activity #77 Using the Shining Armor Award to Recruit Shining Armor Award ● The Shining Armor Award should be started immediately after a member is done with their 1st degree. Councils may allow all members, new and current, to complete the requirements to attain the Shining Armor Award. ● After handing out the Requirements Card to each of the new and current members, explain each requirement with the new and current Knights so they understand what they must complete. ● After the member has completed a requirement, they need to have the Grand Knight or Financial Secretary sign off on their card. The insurance rep will need to sign off on their requirement. ● After completing all requirements, the card needs to be turned in to the Grand Knight for them to award the Shining Armor Pin. ● The Shining armor Award is a big accomplishment. The Grand Knight will award the pins to the members. The District Deputy should be present when the pins are presented to the members. The Grand Knight should talk about this program and make it a big deal each and every meeting. The more you promote this program the better the results will be.

Honor Your Knights in Shining Armor! Awarded for service to the Order with distinction during the first year of membership, the “Shining Armor Award” is given to those men that exemplify what a true Knight of Columbus is. The concept of the “Shining Armor Award” program is to get new members and former members active in the many facets of the Knights of Columbus as early as possible and assist in maintaining that activity and also honor them as a valued member of your council. To qualify for the “Shining Armor Award”, new Knights must, during their first year of service, complete the following activities: · ·

Be involved in at least 3 council service programs. Attend at least 3 council business meetings.

Receive their Second and Third degrees.

Meet with their council’s insurance representative.

Recruit at least one new member.

These are the qualifications for the basic program. Consider implementing it in your council. Keep in mind, the main focus of the program is to get new members actively involved within their council from the very beginning. Councils can order the below materials for this program through the Supreme Council. Qualification Cards (#4292) help new and current members keep track of their progress toward attaining the Shining Armor Award, as their grand knight verifies each completed requirement. These cards are available free of charge. Certificates of Recognition (#4293) are a special way to commemorate the hard work of these new or current Knights. These certificates are available for $.25 each. Shining Armor Lapel Pins (#1700) are not only an honor for those who earn them - they also serve as a promotion for the program to other new or current Knights. These pins are available for $3.00 each. The first 100 completed Shining Armor Award cards turned into the State Membership Director will have their pins paid for by the state and they will be in a drawing to win $100.00. These pins will be purchased by the State Council and sent to the Grand Knight for presentation at the council. Anyone that sends their completed Shining Armor Award cards in after the first 100 will also be placed into a separate drawing to win $100.00. Activity #78 Recruit One Who Serves The great unsung heroes of our faith are our Priests, Brothers, Deacons, and Seminarians. They assist us in keeping and promoting our faith in Jesus Christ and help us through challenging times in our lives. The Seminarians are the future ‘of these

heroes’ that, we pray, will continue to assist and help us. With charity as our first principle, it is important that we scan our parishes, dioceses, and our State to find that one Priest, Brother, Deacon, or Seminarian who is not a member and then recruit him. The great unsung heroes of our society are the law enforcement officers, firefighters, and paramedics who serve our communities and those in the military who protect our country. With patriotism as the fourth of our principles, it's important that in addition we thoroughly scan our communities for new members in these areas. Every day these people take the time to strengthen our faith or put their lives on the line to protect and preserve our laws and ideals. They offer much for us; but we, as the Knights of Columbus - a fraternal service society, also have much to offer this group of people. Order A Guide to the Benefits of Membership in the Knights of Columbus for Public Safety Personnel brochure #4582 that discusses all of the benefits for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and paramedics and those in the military. Activity #79 Council Choice Activity #80 Council Choice Many councils have very successful recruitment programs of their own that allow them to bring active members into their council. Pick any of the programs your council uses to recruit, and as long as it brings in a new member, report it under this program. Incentives and Awards District Deputy Incentives ¨ A District Deputy who achieves Supreme Star District membership quota will receive an “Ohio State Membership Club 2015-2017” jacket. Each District Deputy that achieves 150% of membership quota or more will receive an “Ohio State Membership Club 2015-2017” polo with the Knights of Columbus logo. District Deputies who achieve 200% of their membership goal or more on June 30 will receive a men’s Knights of Columbus watch. ¨ When a new council is chartered, the District Deputy responsible will receive a plaque with a copy of the council’s charter on it. ¨ When a new council is formed, the District Deputy will get $100.00 per council formed.

Council Incentives McGivney’s Award - Achieve membership quota. Founder’s Award - Achieve insurance quota. ¨ Each council that recruits100new members will receive the “Golden Chalice Award” award: one trip for the Grand Knight to the Supreme Convention in August with three (3) nights’ hotel and registration costs. 2015 – 2017 RETENTION ACTIVITIES PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him…”

Fraternal: of or like a brother or brothers. Fraternal defines our relationships within the Order. While we as knights know that one of the most important goals we have is to recruit new members, what happens after we recruit new members is equally important to our councils and the Order. As Brothers, we must strive at all times to keep our councils active and involved within the parishes and communities, have fun, and most importantly be Fraternal. New members have joined our Order to put their Faith into practice while also contributing to the growth and the welfare of the council. As their Brother Knights we cannot let them slip into the background by our own indifference to their presence. All Knights whether new or Honorary Life Members continually want to know they are needed, wanted, and contributing members. Subsequently, the Retention Committee is crucial. The Grand Knight, Financial Secretary and the Trustees should be key members, as well as, anyone else who is committed to taking an active part of reaching out to others in the council. We have all experienced how hard it is sometimes to ask for help of any kind, so you might feel the retention committee’s job is thankless and tough, but it is also very rewarding. We hope the following program activities make your efforts easier and the rewards bigger. Working together we believe we can keep our councils strong and retention high. Be ever mindful, Retention is all about “building relationships, not making transactions.” There are SIX (6) in the Through Him, With Him, In Him… Membership Activities Program. For a council to “MAX” the membership program in the state general program, the following must be completed: Complete 3 out of the 6 possible activities below for a total of 120 points. Activity #81 Form a Retention Committee This committee is tried and true if put into action. An effective retention committee would contact every member 2-3 times a year, the new and seasoned alike. Recommend the Deputy Grand Knight chair the Committee while leading an active group of recognized council members, i.e. the Trustees and the Financial Secretary. The committee should be trained, or mentored, in activities commensurate with good communications. To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: · · ·

Report the formation of a Retention Committee with chairman Detail the “campaigns” used to contact all the members of the council Include the techniques and materials used to communicate

Activity #82 Recognize Your Members Periodically honor each council member in the Council Newsletter and/or website. Do a random selection and conduct personal interviews and create biographies, which includes information about the family, interests and occupations. This is another good reason to call a member and let him know we’re thinking about him. To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: · ·

Report of at least 12 personal interviews within the fraternal year Provide at least three sample biographies from the council newsletter and/or website

Activity #83 Train the Proposers Each Brother Knight needs and wants to know his duties, as a proposer, for bringing a Catholic gentleman into our Order. This is a good series of topics for the lecturer or “guest” speaker during regular business meetings. Recommend using the theme, “It’s not a transaction, it’s a relationship.” Also, take advantage of the materials, available from Supreme, to support the training. To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: ·

Report at least four (quarterly?) lecturer/speaker sessions in the fraternal year

Activity #84 Establish a Mentoring Program for 40 points The purpose of this program is to familiarize a new member with how your council works, within the overall Knights of Columbus organization, and help them feel welcomed and comfortable. Ohio State Council Mentoring Handbook The purpose of this program is to familiarize a new member with how your organization works and help them feel welcomed and comfortable. The process of this program well help them integrate into meetings so they become engaged and make new friends. The payoff will be a new member who participates and volunteers. The goal of the mentorship program is to help integrate new members into your council so that they become fully engaged and active participants. Though this program could potentially be used on less engaged members, it’s designed for new members who won’t as easily be insulted by the concept of being introduced to the knights. Remember that no one likes to feel like an outsider. If a person walks into their first meeting and they don’t know anyone, or understand a meeting’s structures, and the organizations goals, they will choose to not be involved. It is very important that you first select your potential mentors before you approach the new member. They should be someone with a strong understanding of how the Knights of Columbus operate on a local, state, national and world level. They should be someone who is a strong volunteer for your group at meetings and special events. I think above all else, they should be someone who is friendly and relatable. If you are lucky enough to have multiple possible mentors, consider pairing that person with a recruit of similar interest when you can. All new members should be brought through this program, even if they are someone who has considered joining for some time for some time and they are already “familiar” with K of C and/or your local member that they might already “know”.

STEP 1 Phone the new member, and introduce yourself. It is important to make sure that they are aware of the purpose of your call, the process you will take them through and the payoff for their participation. SUGGESTED LANGUAGE Hello, (Candidate’s Name), my name is (insert name) and I am with council number (insert number). I am calling today because I am here to assist and guide you through the process of becoming a brother knight. We have an onboarding process designed to make sure you can maximize your experience. Stay with them during any fellowship after the meeting. If people don’t feel welcomed, make a connection or feel that they have no friends they won’t come back. Make sure they know they are welcomed to attend all future meetings.

STEP 5 FOLLOW UP CALL AFTER 30 DAYS TO SEE IF THE NEW MEMBER HAS ANY QUESTIONS. Make sure they have their 2nd, 3rd and 4th degrees scheduled. Do your best to get a commitment from them to come to at least one event if you know the dates. For example if you have fundraiser, food/toy drive, special mass, or other volunteering opportunity, get them to commit to coming to at least one. Get them to verbally say “yes I will help at (insert option)”. Be there with them lead by example. Thank them for donating their time. STEP 6 This is optional, but highly recommended. Most of our members are married. Try to arrange a social outing with the spouses coming along. It’s important for spouses to also understand the requirements (so we can get time for meetings, etc.) and have them buy into what the Knights of Columbus do. If the spouses feel welcomed and supported, we are all better off. Many of us have events in which spouses volunteer and attend, so make sure they have a working understanding of our principals, meeting dates and times, and other events on the calendar.

Activity #85 Dues “Helping Hand” Fundraiser The council may set up a separate “Helping Hand” Fund for those times when an active member might need some temporary help. The council may conduct some fundraisers throughout the year to build the account. Prayerfully consider helping to pay the per capita portion of the bill and forgive the rest, or even cover the entire cost of dues. To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: ·

Activity #86 Promote the Fourth Degree Members who take part in the Patriotic Degree are less likely to drop out of the order. The council should promote and encourage membership in the local Assembly. Invite current members from the local Assembly to talk with the members of the council about this Degree. Have a Fourth Degree liaison appointed within your council to inform members to the Fourth Degree events and activities. The council may conduct incentive drawings offering to pay the winner’s Fourth Degree exemplification fee. To earn credit for this activity, submit the online report with the following: ·

2015 – 2017 CEREMONIALS PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him…” Ceremonials are a very important part of our traditions as Knights of Columbus Ceremonials are the core of the Order. Fraternal organizations choose who can be members and mandate a rite of passage. In the Knights of Columbus the rites of passage are our four Degrees. Many fraternal organizations have drifted away from ceremonials and as a result have suffered a decline in membership. We have not. Our ceremonials are the glue that holds the Order together. Father McGivney established the first three degrees as a way of instructing our members in the lessons of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. McGivney’s first goal was to help members live by the rules of the Catholic Faith. Our members need to understand what makes the Knights of Columbus different from other fraternal organizations. Our steadfast adherence to the ceremonials is what makes the Order stand out from among other organizations. The First Degree The First Degree is the candidate’s first experience of the Order. He is introduced to the first principle of the Order, Charity. Therefore it is incumbent upon us to make it an exciting, enjoyable, and memorable experience. His subsequent participation in his Council will be determined in part by his reaction to this initial experience. The Degree should be performed by a certified team whenever possible. The Grand Knight of the Council should attempt to contact a certified team. If a certified team is not available, the Grand Knight can take his candidates to a neighboring Council that is holding a First Degree. In the event that there is no First Degree conducted by a certified team available, a Council may read the degree using the materials provided by Supreme. The required ceremonial items must be used. Robes are optional. A dark business suit with the Supreme Council Ceremonial Baldric worn over it can be used in lieu of robes. If the option to read the Degree using the required materials, it is strongly recommended that the men reading the parts practice before putting on the Degree. Supreme Council has provided every Council with a DVD of the First Degree which will help in practicing presentation of parts. This should, in no way, be given to a candidate to take and listen to the Degree in lieu of attending an actual Degree. Who knows, the Council may decide that they want to form a certified team. · · · ·

If a certified First Degree Team needs to travel they may charge the host Council mileage at the approved State rate for up to two cars and $25.00 for the Degree. A District Deputy may certify a First Degree Team once the team members have demonstrated their mastery of the part. Memorization is required. If a Council takes candidates to another Council for the First Degree, the required degree kit should be provided to the host Council.

The Second Degree The Second Degree teaches the new member the power of the second principle of the Order, Unity. This Degree is conducted by certified Second Degree Teams. There is no option for reading the Degree. All parts must be memorized. All required ceremonial items must be used. Robes are optional. A dark business suit with the Supreme Ceremonial Baldric worn over it can be worn in lieu of robes. o The District Deputy is responsible for the scheduling of Second Degrees within his District. It is recommended that a District Deputy form a certified Second Degree Team within his District. o A Second Degree Team is certified by the State Deputy or his State Ceremonial Director. o A Second Degree Team may charge $50.00 and roundtrip mileage at the State approved rate for up to two cars. The Third Degree The Third Degree teaches the lesson of Fraternity, the importance of the Eucharist in the lives of our members and the role of our Priests in the Church. This Degree can only be exemplified by a certified Conferring Officer and his Staff. Robes are required. The District Deputy wishing to have a Third Degree in his District contacts his District Deputy Coordinator who then contacts the State Ceremonial Director. The State Ceremonial Director contacts the nearest Conferring Officer to see if he and his Staff are available. The State Ceremonial Director then contacts the District Deputy Coordinator with the decision on whether the Degree can take place. · The Conferring Officer is in charge once he arrives at the Degree site. · A Conferring Officer and his Staff are certified by the State Deputy or the State Ceremonial Director. · A Conferring Officer may charge $50.00 to help defer the cost and upkeep of the Audio Visual items required for this Degree. Guidelines for Ceremonials No alcoholic beverages will be served on the premises prior to or during any degree. This rule will be strictly enforced. · When a degree team is being formed the State Ceremonial Director should be contacted. He will assist in obtaining and preparing the proper paperwork to obtain the Ceremonial Books from Supreme. · When a District Deputy certifies a First Degree Team he should ensure that the paperwork required is submitted. The forms should be submitted through the State Ceremonial Director who will then pass them on to the State Deputy. The ·

State Deputy will forward the forms to Supreme. Supreme will then send the team members their official cards stating that they are members of a certified degree team. 路

District Deputies are required to submit the required Form 450 for all degrees held in his District. He must submit a form even if he was unable to attend the Degree. He would state on the Form that he was unable to attend. These forms are necessary so that all degrees are recorded at Supreme.

Each Degree should be exemplified on separate dates. If necessary, two Degrees can be exemplified on the same day. However, in no case, should all three Degrees be held on the same day. This restriction will be strictly enforced.

Council and District Deputy Incentives Each Council that establishes a new certified First or Second Degree Team and holds a minimum of 3 First or Second Degrees from July 1 to June 30 will receive $100. Certification forms should be sent to the State Ceremonial Director and State Membership Director to receive this award. A District Deputy who establishes or recertifies a previously certified First Degree Team and conducts a First Degree every month from July 1 to June 30 or a minimum of twelve (12) degrees in the same period will receive $50. Certification forms should be sent to the State Ceremonial Director and State Membership Director to receive this award.

2015-2017 NEW COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM “Through Him, With Him, In Him” Benefits of a Knights of Columbus Parish Council The Knights of Columbus is an organization like no other! We have a great history of supporting our Church, our community and our families! We are a Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization for the entire community founded in 1882. Since our Order was founded by a priest, it is only natural that we stand behind our priests. We serve both the Priest and the Parish at every opportunity. A local Knights of Columbus parish council is a microcosm of the Supreme Council. Each council receives support and guidance from the Supreme Council, from its State Council and all its officers. Guidance comes in the form of programs and guidance from the Supreme and State Councils and from the individuals in the hierarchy of our Order. Our focus needs to be on supporting the Pastor. If we do this, we will not only grow our Order, but will also help the parish and the community. Although the man is the member, we are a FAMILY organization. Each program is designed to assist councils in performing activities that support the pastor, enhance and promote our Catholic faith, enhance our communities and encourage family interactions. Each council receives assistance and guidance from the State Council and from the District Deputy, yet each council is encouraged to relate to their parish and community needs. These activities are well balanced and are intended to cover a wide spectrum of services within the area. The activities presented are guidelines to help councils serve their parishes’ needs, they are not cast-in-stone. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic organization. We strive to be better Catholic gentlemen and to help those around us be better Catholics as well. What better way to help others become better Catholics than through our deeds? Parish-based councils have the opportunity to help the entire parish become better Catholics through their efforts. Currently, we, the Knights of Columbus, have only eight percent of the Catholic men in the State of Ohio as members. A parish-based council allows us to approach and cultivate more Catholic men into our organization. We will have members that interact every weekend with men that have not been introduced to the Knights of Columbus. Using this model, we what goals can we not attain? A Knights of Columbus council also provides a social environment for the members and their families to enjoy fraternity and friendship where it may have been previously lacking. Parish priests have commented that the creation of a parish-based council has fostered parishioners staying after mass and visiting due to the common interests they now have yet were not aware of before. The Knights of Columbus support our Pope and the clergy like no other. Our membership theme over the years has been “In Solidarity with Our Priests” and our members are proud of that commitment. Parish councils are the most active and supportive group working through the parish for the community.

The New Council Development Program in the great state of Ohio is alive and well. It has been blessed with excellent leadership both from the State officers and from our District Deputies. By working together and following the steps below, we can do GREAT things. Let us strive to achieve. Father McGivney’s goal of a council in every parish – one step at a time. Our success can be placed upon the execution of the aforementioned program. We have countless District Deputies who have participated and acknowledged the steps in this program which have enabled their success. Father McGivney’s vision of a council in every available parish is alive and well and living in Ohio. If we are diligent in our efforts, charitable in our works and strive to make our great Order available to every Catholic man in Ohio, we will be successful. New Council Development is everyone’s job. It is the life blood of the Knights of Columbus. By growing our Order through New Council Development, our parishes and pastors benefit, our communities profit and those men we will be able to call Knights will benefit. The only exceptions to the parish program are college campuses and our seminaries. The keys to the success are as follows: 1) Contact the New Council Development Director (NCDD) with a potential location. 2)

The NCDD gages the interest and viability of the potential council.

3) The NCDD then meets with the District Deputy and the pastor of the parish to create the most successful plan for council creation/development at that parish. 4)

The process is then implemented at the Parish.

Success in New Council Development begins with a plan. That plan is explained below. The second phase of New Council Development is overcoming hurdles. These hurdles take many forms. Our ability to listen will greatly impact our ability to overcome hurdles and succeed. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? The simpler a plan is – the better the chances of success. Don’t take a chance – follow the plan! Do not let this process drag on and on. A sense of urgency will not hurt, it will actually help the process. Address issues as they occur and do not be afraid to ask for help. After your third or fourth New Council it will be second nature to you.

New Council Development – New Council Creation Plan Steps to Implementation Step # 1: Contact the State New Council Development Director and alert him to the parish(s) for the possible new council (s). Make the NCDD aware of the reasons to support the institution of a new council and provide the pastor’s contact information. He will then guide the development, provide the ensuing steps and inform you and your volunteers on the next best procedures. The 2015-2017 NCD Director is John Brown. Step # 2: Under the direction of the NCDD, a meeting will be scheduled with the parish pastor to seek his permission to proceed with a new Knights of Columbus parish council. At this meeting, we advise Father the benefits of his Parishbased council. We will provide the contact information for Pastors in his area who already have councils. Make sure these pastors know they might be contacted. The only requirements of the pastor will be to prepare a letter to the Parishioners introducing the Knights of Columbus and to be present at the Open House to lead the meeting in prayer and for his personal comments. In addition we seek his thoughts on those who are leaders in the parish and those he feels would be great leaders for the new council. Once the pastor gives his permission, the NCDD will complete Form #133 “Notice of Intent to Establish a New Council” and forward to the State Deputy. Step # 3: Provide the pastor with parish bulletin inserts and any announcements that you wish to be made about the new K of C council being established in the parish. Step # 4: Schedule a meeting with all representatives who will be working on the formation. Discuss and review the details and plans for the successful creation of the new council. As a guide, prepare a list of the details and plans for all activities and assignments. Step # 5: On the first recruitment weekend, a short announcement is made during Mass by the Mass Celebrant. A group of members, are available at the Mass to pass out literature, handle questions and sign up new prospects. Step # 6: On the second recruitment weekend, it is crucial to have an adequate number of members available to execute the plan initiated on the first weekend. It is imperative that members bring along their wives to visit with the women. Step # 7: On the third recruitment weekend, one member should be assigned to give a short presentation about the Knights of Columbus at each weekend Mass. This should be relatively short and to the point. It must be reviewed by the NCDD prior to its presentation. Please keep in mind that the member(s) selected

to make the presentation is made aware it should be done in a professional manner. Inform the parishioners of the plan for a new council and the benefits the parish will receive by having their own council. Several members should be available at each exit of the church to speak to potential members and hand out informational material. The goal is to encourage one on one conversation with all prospects and their families. Step # 8: During our meeting with the pastor, we previously established a date for an information night at the parish, which has been announced in the parish bulletin. The program should not last more than 1 hour. The NCDD will be present with all appropriate literature along with the District Deputy and other district and state personnel. The program will consist of prayer, the pledge of allegiance, the history of the Knights of Columbus and the ladies perspective. Immediately following the presentation there will be a Question and Answer time conducted by the NCDD or his designee. Every effort should be made to have the prospective men present fill out the Form #100 utilizing the District Deputy to assist him. A first degree should have been planned for the following week at the same location as the information night. The exemplification of the first degree will be performed by a certified degree team (all parts of the Degree Team are to be memorized). At this point, please relay to the men the date of the degree and that it is at the very same location and time as the information night. Step # 9: The scheduling of the degree gives the recruiting team time to make home visits. Immediately following the degree, have a meeting with the members. Evaluate the results of your efforts and plan the final formation of the council. If at this time there are not at least 20 members, who include transfers, new members, former members and inactive insurance members, then establish teams and call on parishioners at their homes to explain the benefits. Step # 10: Schedule and conduct another first degree. Step # 11: After achieving the designated number of members for a new council the DD will prepare Form #136 “Notice of Institution of New Council” and he will forward that form to the Supreme New Council Growth Office, the State New Council Development Director, and to the State Deputy. Step # 12: At the first formation meeting, explain the duties of the elected officers. You can show the DVD provided by Supreme or the Flyers provided by the NCDD. Give notice to the new members of an election of officers. Conduct the election, set the meeting times and dates and consider the name for the council and form the financial structure for the members. It should be noted at that time, a date should be established no-more-than 45 days thereafter, that Form #137 “Application for Charter” be prepared. Insure that all names on the Charter are given names and not nicknames. Verify that the name on the Form #100 is the same on the Application for Charter.

Step # 13: District Deputy and the newly elected Grand Knight will mail these forms to the Supreme New Council Growth Office, the State New Council Development Director, and to the State Deputy. Step # 14: The newly elected Grand Knight and the three Trustees shall appoint a Financial Secretary and submit Form #101 Application for Appointment as Financial Secretary and Form #103 Nomination for Appointment as Financial Secretary to the Supreme Council. Complete Form #185 Report of Officers Chosen and Form #365 Service Program Personnel Report and forward both to the State Deputy and Supreme Council â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Fraternal Services. Set up training sessions for those officers that require training. Step # 15: Grand Knight will send a letter to the Bishop of his Diocese asking his approval to appoint the parish pastor or his designee to serve as council chaplain. Step # 16: After receiving the new council charter from the Supreme Council, set a date for the charter presentation. Invite the State Deputy, District Deputy and parishioners to be present for this special occasion. Throughout the entire formation process, make sure to keep the Pastor involved and informed. Remember â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it is with his blessing that we are able to start a new council in his parish. The entire â&#x20AC;&#x153;Through Him, With Him, and In Himâ&#x20AC;? state general program is viewable in HTML Format on the Ohio State Council website for your review and reference. A .pdf format copy of the state general program can be readily downloaded and printed. The Ohio State Council Knights of Columbus website address is http://www.kofcohio.org ELECTRONIC REPORTING All activity program steps must be reported on-line as all of the individual activity report forms, by program area, are available on the web site. Go to the Ohio State Council website http://www.kofcohio.org, log in and select the appropriate menu option for a specific report form. The state website is a great communications tool to keep members informed of the many Knights of Columbus programs and issues throughout the state of Ohio. It has an online calendar, reminders, and various information tools that help the Council function. It also provides excellent information about the various state-sponsored programs that are conducted throughout the fraternal year and keeps the user up-todate on current events, at the Council, District, State and Supreme levels. We encourage our membership to visit the website and utilize the many features that have been designed and developed to help disseminate state information and make program reporting fun and easy. There is a wealth of information presented that can assist all councils to become more involved and successful with their activity programming efforts.

COUNCIL PROGRAM DATA ENTRY PROCEDURE *** Using your browser application go to http://www.kofcohio.org . At the top right of the page of the website, you will see the green Login button. Click on this button to enter the website. Make sure that you have JavaScript enabled and you are not blocking popup windows.

On the popup window that shows up, you will be able to enter your username and password to gain access to the website. You only need to have one login and one password.

If you forget your username or password, you can click on the appropriate links and you will be able to retrieve your username or reset your password. If you are a new user, click on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sign Up Nowâ&#x20AC;? and you will be able to create a personalized username and password to access the website. Every active member in the State of Ohio will be able to log in and access the general areas of the State website by setting up their account. Certain privileged access (Grand Knight Financial Secretary, etc.) will be available to the appropriate officers in the Council. Once you have successfully logged into the website, you will see an updated menu (update your address, phone, email, and any interests).

MY DASHBOARD Every user will have access to a summary page that is shown when the user logs in. Based upon the role (Knight, Council Reporting Director, Financial Secretary, Grand Knight, etc.), a small summary page will show any new notifications, forms or tasks that are currently due and any past due forms or tasks. The dashboard summary page will also show the Council progress towards maxing the General program along with Council information from Supreme Council (Forms submitted to Supreme, Membership and Insurance quotas, etc.).

HELPFUL HINTS ** Remember, if you walk away or are distracted after you have login and show no activity in the application for a 60 minute period, you will be logged off. If you were in the middle of filling out a report and you time out you will be taken to the main K of C Ohio web site entrance screen where you will need to log in to continue any work.

ENTERING COUNCIL PROGRAMS To enter Council programs, select “Programs” and then “Enter Programs” to Enter your Council programs into the State website for grading.

1. On the program entry page, you can select the reporting period, program group, and program activity, all on one page. As you select the program group, the program activities for that group become available for you to select. a. Select the appropriate reporting period from the “Reporting Period” dropdown. b. Select the appropriate Program Group for your activity (Administrative, Church, Community, Council, Family, Culture Of Life, Youth, Membership, Retention). c. Select the appropriate Program Activity that matches your Council activity.

d. In the “Description of Activity” column provide a narrative of the action taken for this activity. (Warning: Do not Copy / Paste from PDF Files into your program reports!) e. In the “Number of Knight Hours” provide how many hours you spent on this activity. f. In the “Number of Knights Present” provide how many Knights participated in this activity. g. This reveal State Directory where you can look up and contact any Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, General Agent, District Deputy, State Staff, and State Officer throughout the State of Ohio. You can search by Diocese, Title, or name and the results will appear.
