MARCH 2021
FATHER MCGIVNEY’S VISION HE EMBODIED LOVE OF GOD & NEIGHBOR On fire for the faith, Father McGivney was also approachable and trusted by the powerful and lowly alike. His ability to mourn with those in sorrow and bring joy and support to those in need of encouragement marked his priestly ministry. To him, faith was a gift to be treasured by every Catholic, and there were no human boundaries that could not be overcome by the love and care of a good and gracious God. Despite the anti-Catholic sentiments of the time, Father McGivney wanted to see Catholics keep the faith and thrive. He often stepped outside the church walls to become an advocate for parishioners in court to keep their families together; he engaged cordially with those of other Christian faiths, even a prominent New Haven minister; and he staged plays and fairs for all comers. It can well be said that Father McGivney was a man ahead of his time, anticipating by nearly a century the Second Vatican Council’s “universal call to holiness” for laypeople as well as clergy, and embodying the opening words of the Vatican II document Gaudium et Spes: The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ. Indeed, nothing genuinely human fails to raise an echo in their hearts.

In June 1873, In 1868, 16-year-old Michael left tragedy home to pursue God’s call to the struck with priesthood. His formation as a the death seminarian was rich and diverse, of his spanning two countries, four father, seminaries and instruction by three nearly religious orders — the charityupending oriented Vincentians, the 20-year-old academically rigorous Jesuits, and Michael’s the experienced formers of diocesan vocation. not make him aloof, and he was remembered for his sense of humor — as well as for his enthusiasm for the relatively new game of baseball. After four years of study, Michael was ordained by Archbishop (later Cardinal) James Gibbons on Dec. 22, 1877, in Baltimore’s historic Cathedral of the Assumption, the nation’s first cathedral. A few days later, with his widowed mother present, Father Michael J. McGivney celebrated his first public Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury, beginning his life as a priest — a busy and difficult vocation — which then had a life expectancy of only about 40 years.

Anderson’s 20-year tenure as well as unprecedented challenges facing the Church and society. Though many of the events of this past year stand in stark contrast to the celebration that surrounded the Great Jubilee, the recent beatification of Blessed Michael McGivney reminds us of our call to be joyful witnesses of the Gospel in our own time. Therefore, as we look back at the past 20 years, we also look to the future, full of confidence and hope in Christ. Thank you to Carl Anderson for his dedication and service to our beloved Order.
KofC Elects New Supreme Knight The Knights of Columbus Board of Directors elected Patrick E. Kelly as the next Supreme Knight on Feb. 5, to continue the mission of charity, unity and fraternity established by the Order’s Founder, Blessed Michael McGivney, almost 140 years ago. Carl A. Anderson will retire February 28, after more than 20 years of service as Supreme Knight and upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. He leaves a legacy of Christian witness and service to the Catholic Church, to the Knights of Columbus and to communities throughout the world. Patrick Kelly’s tenure as the Order’s 14th Supreme Knight will commence March 1.

STATE OFFICER REPORT “Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 I am curious to the number of us that might be questioning St. Paul here. The last year has been one where we have been told to be patient and wait as the pandemic runs it course. We have shut down council events and meetings; parishes have limited attendance at mass, and the overall feeling is of doom and gloom. The presence of COVID is making all of us look at things differently. Many councils are thriving—recruiting members, working in their parishes, and continuing to grow in their faith.
