When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.—John 20:6-9

FATHER MCGIVNEY’S VISION PROTECTOR OF CATHOLIC FAMILIES A man of practical thought and action, Father McGivney knew that the pursuit of holiness did not consist in an aloof attitude or separation from people and their problems. As a parish priest, his primary concern was for the welfare — both spiritual and temporal — of the largely Irish-American and immigrant Catholic population that teemed into New Haven, where he began his ministry at St. Mary’s Church in 1878. Catholics then were especially vulnerable. It was a time when many employers had a policy of “Irish Need Not Apply.” Immigrants often had to take the most dangerous positions in the mines, on the railroads, and in the factories. Accidents, disease and overwork led too often to the family’s breadwinner suffering an early death, leaving his wife and children destitute, with no social safety nets.

The killing a police officer while church became a lightning rod drunk. Father McGivney visited for anti-Catholic derision, him daily to offer guidance, expressed in a New York Times prayer and Mass in the city jail headline, “How an Aristocratic over many months. SUPREME NEWS
NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR
APRIL 2021
SUPREME NEWS & NOTES “He is not here; for He is risen …” Matthew 28:6 Prayers and warm wishes to you and your family for a happy and holy Easter. From the Knights of Columbus
FOUNDER’S DAY MESSAGE Today, we celebrate Founder’s Day, which marks the date on which the Knights of Columbus was granted its charter by the State of Connecticut in 1882 and which honors, in a particular way, our visionary Founder. This Founder’s Day is the first since Father McGivney’s beatification, and it provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon the importance of that momentous event and its meaning for our Order today. Blessed Michael McGivney was inspired to create a band of Catholic gentlemen, devoted to the principles of charity and unity — helping those in need; growing in faith and virtue as Catholic husbands and fathers; and providing financial security to families. I believe that the beatification of
Father McGivney was a testament and affirmation of his spiritual vision. And we should each feel encouraged in realizing that vision to this day. For even if the challenges facing Catholic men have changed, the mission set forth by our Founder remains as relevant as ever. Brother Knights, as many of our communities hope that better days are now before us, we should examine when and how we can return to normal council activities, with all due prudence and in accord with what is possible in our jurisdictions. We should also be inspired by those brave men who weathered a great deal of hardship — including a pandemic — in the first years of the Order, so that the world and our Church might be made better by faithful men standing together. Those early Knights were not rash in their actions, but they were courageous in laying down their lives by serving others, and building up their families,
parishes and communities. Together, let us continue to reach out to our neighbors in need and to build up our own families, parishes and communities. In so doing, we will honor our holy Founder and ultimately give glory to God. Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, Patrick E. Kelly Supreme Knight

STATE OFFICER REPORT

APRIL 2021
STATE OFFICER REPORT A very happy and blessed Easter Season. May the joy of the resurrection and moving of the stone light a path for you and your families.
——————————————Have you ever been so close to accomplishing a goal that you could just taste it?
We preserve, push through and learn to succeed. That, my brothers, in the true Cleveland Spirit. A spirit that can electrify a region with the highs and lows. The attitude that we can do anything that we put our mind to it.
Our Worthy State Deputy, Robert Byers, is in a similar position now. He is so close to I think back over the decades of representing OUR state, OUR Cleveland sports. Early on, the diocese at the Supreme teams were built on Convention by making Circle of championships—Browns in the Honor. He can just taste it and 40s and 50s, Indians in the 20s, 40s, 50s, 90s and 2010s, the Cavs wants nothing more than to be YOUR representative and in 2016. But despite all of those accepting, for OHIO and championship years, there have CLEVELAND, the award for been times of suffering. How many of us remember the Indians membership from our newly elected Supreme Knight, Patrick during the 1970s, or the Browns Kelly. loosing strike in Pittsburgh during the 1970s and 80s. There was “Red-Right-88,” “The Drive,” We all need to do our part— “The Fumble,” “The Shot,” and of Cincinnati, Columbus, Steubenville, Toledo, course the kicker—the 0-16 Youngstown—AND YES— season of just a couple of years CLEVELAND! ago. But through all of that, the Cleveland fan base has always been there. The national media loved to just pile on Cleveland. Stephen A. Smith, Colin Coherd just to name a couple. The national media does not understand who and what we are here in Cleveland.
I need you. Our Worthy State Deputy needs you all to show that spirit and let us make sure that every Catholic man and his family in our parishes is asked to put his faith into action and help us all continue the mission of Jesus Christ. Finally, all councils in good standing need to elect delegates and alternates for the state convention. Yes, the convention is going to be virtual again but there is an election for State Warden and resolutions that will require delegates for voting. Register on the state website by APRIL 25, 2021.
We have the tools to make a run at Circle of honor. Sixteen (16) councils already in our diocese are doing everything they can and have exceeded their membership. Now, we all need God Bless. to do some more. We need to put that CLEVELAND SPIRIT that Jim Maslach, State Warden we have for our sports teams into action.
