FATHER MCGIVNEY’S VISION PRATICAL VISION, ENDURING MISSION With an eye toward leading others to heaven, Father McGivney was attentive to the ways of the world as he worked to better the spiritual and temporal conditions of his immigrant parishioners. His innovative efforts to draw laypeople closer to Christ – especially through his founding of the fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus – was creative, effective and bold. A priest who knew him well wrote: Genial, approachable, of kindly disposition, cheerful under reverses, profoundly sympathetic with those upon whom had fallen the heavy hand of affliction, a man of strict probity and sterling integrity in his business transactions. He was charitable to a fault ... The poor found in him a good Samaritan, and were the frequent recipients of his bounty. … There are few clergymen in my recollection who enjoyed in a greater degree than he the respect of his colleagues and the reverence of the people. … His energy was restless, ever seeking new outlets. And to this disposition are we indebted for the existence of the

Falling ill during the global viral pandemic of 1889-90, Father McGivney developed tuberculosis struck and was forced to cut back on his routine to seek a cure. After months of heroic struggle against the illness, and after intense prayer for his parishioners and their future, he finally received the last rites and succumbed to pneumonia on Aug. 14, 1890, two days past his 38th birthday. The funeral Mass and procession were attended by Knights and other Catholics from across Connecticut, and even secular news reports described him as an pastor who had to turn much of exemplary priest and a model the pastoral work over to his new Christian man. assistant. STATE OFFICER REPORT

NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR

JULY 2021

STATE OFFICER REPORT For many of us, the last 18-months seems like eternity. Sitting there just • waiting for the other shoe to drop. And now, as we are opening back up, fear is raised again as variants are present. How many letters is there in Greek alphabet again? Oh yea, 24. We just concluded the administration of Immediate Past State Robert Byers. God puts the right people in the right place at the right time and that most certainly was Bob. He remained positive, continued to do the best that he could to help promote and energize the councils despite the pandemic. Bob is known for saying that “it is like playing six card euchre and being dealt all sevens and eights.” Yes, it was a challenge, but Bob never gave up hope that we would rise above it all. No one should question that Cleveland was active during the pandemic. Look at all of the state awards that were collected by YOU and the work YOU did. Look at the top selling Super Cash councils—all Cleveland. Cleveland certainly rocks and we showed the rest of the state that we are here putting our faith into action. With that, I want to thank a number of individuals that made my first two years as your state officer easier and fulfilling: •

George Metz and Mike Incorvati for taking leadership roles and helping to keep our eyes on the mission Retiring District Deputies John Mohorcic, Ron Reichert and Steve Koly for your service in working with your councils to help guide and mentor them The District Deputies returning that we take what we learned and apply it going forward so that we all can prosper Nick Gresko, Tom Buehner and John

Brown for working on the state team Finally, to all of you and your councils. Before COVID the warm reception and friendly atmosphere you all conveyed and during COVID for continuing to put your faith into action.

Now, we are starting a new fraternal year and a new administration under State Deputy Mark Siracusa from the Toledo Diocese. Mark has put together a team that will build upon what IPSD Bob Byers started and help continue to push Ohio to be a leader in the KofC. Cleveland wishes nothing but good luck and our prayers for a success term of office. The Cleveland Team is also changing slightly for these next two years. We have re-organized the districts to allow councils that are in closer proximity to each other the opportunity to work on larger, district wide projects. We are bringing on two new district deputies: Tom Donovan and Cris Drugan. George and Mike are back but they are switching roles. George will be responsible for the District Deputies and Mike moves over to membership where he is joined with Brett Hazen. Tom Buehner stepped down as program director to spend time with his young kids but agreed to take on updating the state website. Thank you very much! John Brown is also still here but now serves as the Assistant State Membership Director.

Jim Maslach, State Advocate State Tour Meeting. Let us kick this fraternal year off like no other and put Cleveland in the drivers seat. Check out the membership incentives and programs in place and schedule your activities and events. Cleveland definitely rocks and this is going to be a great year! Training is big and we know that you need it. There will be an introduction to Member Management / Member Billing training for GKs and FSs that are new or are not using MM/MB at this time. Keep your eyes open for it but I am targeting mid-August.

We are finalizing the Diocesan Strategic Plan for 2021-2022. A significant amount of the next issue will pertain to what we are doing at the Diocesan level and where we can help you and your Now I have the opportunity to serve you councils in the upcoming here. as your State Advocate. I am concluding the Measure Up Campaign for 2021 Again, thank you for all that you did, do (HINT, HINT), will be starting Matching and will continue to do for our faith, Funds in September, and be responsible families and communities. God Bless! for the Safe Environment Compliance. Vivat Jesus! Join us on Sunday, July 11 at 1PM at St. Ambrose in Brunswick for the LIVE
