AUGUST 13: FEAST DAY FOR BLESSED MICHAEL Official Feast Day in the Catholic Church of Blessed Father Michael McGivney, patron and found of the Knights of Columbus. The feast is celebrated annual on August 13th across the universal Catholic Church. Bl. Fr. McGivney was born on August 12, 1852 and passed away on August 14, 1890 (aged 38). His feast day is celebrated on the 13th because it falls between these two dates. Bl. Fr. McGivney was Beatified on October 31, 2020 at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin (on behalf of Pope Francis). This Cathedral is the Diocese Seat for the Bl. Fr. McGivney’s shrine that also was the final parish church he served at during his life as a Priest and also where he founded the Knights (Church of Saint Mary in New Haven, Connecticut). His Eminence Joseph W. Tobin was the American prelate of the Catholic Church at this time.

When Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, the first thing they do is pray: Elizabeth declares a blessing that we repeat every time we say a Hail Mary, and Mary responds with a hymn of praise called the Magnificat. Blessed Michael McGivney, whose feast day we celebrate Aug. 13, came from a prayerful home, and because of his work to strengthen families, we call him the “apostle of Christian family life.” May we seek to make our own homes places of prayer to strengthen our families and draw nearer to God.
This month, I challenge you to pray every day as an individual or as a family, asking the intercession of Blessed Michael McGivney to live in a more prayerful home, perhaps using the prayer for his canonization. Second, I challenge you to assist your council in the Faith in Action Family Prayer Night or Family Week program, incorporating devotions to Father McGivney into your efforts.

KNIGHTS IN ACTION SILVER ROSE VISITING THE DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND The Silver Rose made its triumph return to the Diocese of Cleveland on July 7-10, 2021 stopping at Brookpark Council 13984, St. Mary’s Chardon 15942, St. Ladislas Council 16373 and ending at Brunswick Council 4847. Here is a little re-cap of the Rose’s journey. July 7, 2021 Brookpark Council 13984 On July 7th Brook Park Council #13984 was privileged to host the Silver Rose at Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish to begin its four-day tour through the Cleveland Diocese. Following opening comments by Grand Knight, Bob Alferink, Pastor and Council Chaplain, Father Jim Stenger was celebrant for the Rosary and Liturgy of the Word. Brother Knight Deacon Tom Bizon proclaimed the Gospel and shared a most appropriate Respect Life homily. Father Jim then concluded the prayer service with the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Act of Consecration. Despite stormy weather, the evening was well attended and was also live-streamed to the parish FaceBook page for those not able to be present. A tapestry of Our Lady of Guadeloupe, recently donated to the parish, made a beautiful background for the displayed Silver Rose.
July 8, 2021 St. Mary’s Chardon Council 15942 We held our Silver Rose service on 7/8/2021. There were 10 Knights from council 15942 and Grand Knight Dave Parchem from 16373. We also had a small turnout of parishioners (8) to complete our attendance. NOTE the "rainbow" photo is significant in that this image of Gods loving covenant appeared as we were leaving the service last night. Faint but there.
