FATHER MCGIVNEY’S LEGACY NEW HAVEN PILGRIMAGE The “McGivney Triangle” in New Haven, Conn., describes three locations central to the life and legacy of Father McGivney. Easily walkable, the pilgrimage route starts at St. Mary’s Church, where Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus with a handful of Catholic men; proceeds to the plaza of the Order’s international headquarters, at the display of three statues that capture the vision and mission of the founder, and ends at the Blessed Michael McGivney Center, where the McGivney Gallery features artifacts and relics of the holy priest, and illustrates the history of his Order. Father McGivney's Tomb 5 Hillhouse Avenue

A special place of prayer and pilgrimage is the sarcophagus where the bodily remains of Father McGivney are entombed, near the entrance of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven. Knights and families from many parts of the world, as well as visitors from New Haven and beyond, come to St. Mary’s to pay tribute to Father McGivney in the church where he founded the Order in 1882. They recite the prayer for canonization and thank God for favors received through the intercession of the holy priest. The mortal remains of Father McGivney were reverently placed in the polished granite sarcophagus on March 29, 1982, the centennial of the founding of the Knights of Columbus. The remains had been exhumed from the McGivney family plot in his hometown of Waterbury, where his parents and some of his siblings are still buried in Old St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For more information, visit the St. Mary’s Church website.

International Headquarter 1 Columbus Plaza

From the church, walk a few blocks to the plaza outside the Order’s international headquarters, where a tableau of three bronze figures tells the story behind the founding of the Knights of Columbus. Father McGivney is shown welcoming a widow and her children who seek help from the compassionate priest as the Protector of Christian Family Life. The headquarters is a 23-story office building of distinctive brickwork and four exterior towers symbolizing the Knights’ principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Here the daily work of the Order is conducted in various departments: fraternal mission, insurance, underwriting, investments, communications, technology, and every other section that a modern international company requires. As a place of business, the building is open to invited visitors only.

The Gallery features gradeschool a nd seminary photos, devotional items and newspaper clippings from his days in New Haven. Trinity Council 4217 leads the way at this point with six (6) new members and puts them at 179% of their quota. Holy Family Council 15056 and Akron Council 547 are almost there at 99% of quota. One more member will give them the nudge they need.

EMEMBERSHIP So, you are a new grand knight or financial secretary and you get this email from the State indicating you have a new e-member candidate. Now what am I supposed to do with this???? Really, the process is quite simple and not all that different from when a candidate comes in the traditional way with a Form 100. The only difference, the e-member is already a Knight of Columbus. As an e-member, they are Knights—can get insurance and attend meetings and events—but really cannot do much else. When the state sends you an email with a proposed emember for your council, it is up to you and your team at the council to go through and interview him just like you would any other candidate. If he seems like a good fit for the council, send him to Exemplification—live or virtual. Once he is done with that, you will get notification that the member took the Exemp and can be transferred into your council. Go online to Officers Online, go to the Prospect tab and accept. DONE. The steps are outlined below and are included in every email that has an emember candidate. There are 46-eMembers available to transfer from the state council (98034) to your local council. See the list below to see if you have any eMembers that might be interested in joining your council. If you need any information on the eMembers, please contact Jim Maslach. COUNCIL PROCESS à Council Admission Committee contacts the e-member and welcomes him to the Order. à Interview the emember utilizing the Admission Committee Inquiries Guide (Form 390) à Complete Admission Committee Report (Form 283). à Council Admission Committee recommendation to council officers. IF FOUND FAVORABLE à Council ballots (live or virtually) to accept e-member. à GK, FS or CMD sends online registration link to e-member. à Registration Link for State Online Exemplification (https://www.kofcohio.org/exemplificationregistration/) or Supreme On-Demand Resources (Ceremonial Resources | Knights of Columbus (kofc.org) You will be required to login to Supreme before accessing the Ceremonial page. à E-Member registers and attends Exemplification on assigned date and time. à Upon completion of the Exemplification, a confirmation email is sent to the GK, FS and/or CMD from State Warden or Supreme Council. à Complete the Form 100 received from State Online Membership Director and submit to form100@kofcohio.org OR login to Officers Online and complete the Prospect tab. à Present new member with rosary and emblem of the Order pin at next available opportunity. IF FOUND UNFAVORABLE à Financial Secretary or Grand Knight login to Officers Online Go to the Prospect tab. à Select REJECTION and select the reason why. à Send email to State Online Membership Director, District Deputy and State Officer. à If the reason is incompatible or if the e-member would like a different council, State Online Membership Director will update and forward back to DMD to start the process over again with the new council.

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT The Report of Officers (185) and the Service Personnel Report (365) are now past due—80% of the councils have submitted the Form 185 while only 28% have the 365. Per the Supreme webinar, the Order rate is only at 49%. State and Supreme needs these two reports to be able to assign Safe Environment training and background checks for the current council personnel. A list of the councils that have not completed those forms is below. If your council is listed, use Member Management via Supreme website to update. It is the fastest and most direct way to ensure the data is entered. If you are not using Member Management, email a PDF (fillable) to form185@kofcohio.org or form365@kofcohio.org. This way the State and Supreme will both receive a copy. Also, the Semi-Annual Audit (1295) was due August 15. Luckily, Supreme does not start reporting on those till September. So, next month, we will be looking at those report to see who is behind. If there are any issues or concerns with any of these forms, please ask your District Deputy, George Metz, Mike Incorvati or Jim Maslach. We will help you.

INSURANCE

NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR

SEPTEMBER 2021

MESSAGE FROM CARY AGENCY One harbinger of September that has been like clockwork over the past number of years is our Knights of Columbus Fraternal Survey. It’s my chance to stay in touch with you, see what’s changed in your life and let you know I am here to be of service. Just like last year the survey can be completed online; simple, fast and confidential.

I’m sure that as you look through the survey you might find a block to check; a subject you’d like some information on. Maybe you’ve been thinking about your life insurance and other benefits at work…are they adequate? Do I get to keep my group life insurance when I move to another job? Maybe you’re thinking about a relative that’s had a long term care event and all the agony and worry that entails. Maybe it’s time to get serious about retirement. Perhaps you have some products and you need service—a change of beneficiary or owner…or maybe you’ve moved and we need to update your contact information. Any of these can be addressed if you complete the survey. In my travels around the area I often run into people who know the Knights of Columbus from our good works in the parish or community, our disaster response, support for Special Olympics and our prolife efforts. But very few of them know that we are a life insurance company…and we make no bones about that. After all Fr. McGivney saw that protecting our families was one of the two key reasons he brought those New Haven men together in the basement of St. Mary’s in 1882. “No doubt Father McGivney was motivated by the wish to keep young Catholics from entering the ranks of condemned secret societies and by the need to protect families during sickness and death.” (Faith and Fraternalism, The History of the Knights of Columbus 1882-1982; Christopher J. Kauffman, pg.17) Unite men of faith and protect our families. Our Order has been faithful to that mission for 139 years. With the beatification of Blessed Michael McGivney I feel a renewed zeal to invite men to join the Order to reap those benefits of Unity, Charity and Fraternity. I am just as zealous to help protect Catholic families. Tempus fugit, memento mori!

Vivat Jesus!

Sincerely, David Cary. General Agent Knights of Columbus
