OCTOBER 2021
FATHER MCGIVNEY’S LEGACY A SAINT IN THE MAKING On May 26, 2020, Pope Francis approved a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession of Father McGivney and opening the way for his beatification. On Oct. 31, the Mass for Beatification was celebrated in the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford, Conn. An Apostolic Letter was read from Pope Francis that declared Father McGivney would now have the title of Blessed Michael McGivney. He is the third priest born in the United States to be raised to this honor, and the first priest to be beatified who spent his whole priestly ministry in a US parish. The pope’s Apostolic Letter stated that Blessed Michael McGivney’s “zeal for the proclamation of the Gospel and generous concern for the needs of his brothers and sisters made him an outstanding witness of Christian solidarity and fraternal assistance.”
The Cause for Canonization for Father McGivney was opened in the Archdiocese of Hartford in 1997, when he was given the title Servant of God. On March 15, 2008, his heroic virtue was recognized by Pope Benedict XVI, and Father McGivney was given the title Venerable Servant of God. This important step occurred after years of careful investigation of Father McGivney’s life, spirituality and holiness by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The declaration of Venerable confirmed what those who knew him in life, and others who call upon him since his death, have believed about Father McGivney: He lived a life of heroic virtue with an extraordinary love of God and neighbor. Having been raised to the honors of the altar, Blessed Michael McGivney has an annual feast day of Aug. 13, the day between his birthday (in 1852) and the day he passed into eternal life (in 1890). His cause has now entered the final phase toward canonization or sainthood. One more confirmed miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Michael McGivney is needed for him to be declared saint. All Knights and their families, as well as all those devoted to Father McGivney, are asked to pray for his intercession in their daily needs, especially in cases of serious illness, and to report any favors and healings to the Guild. You may submit your reports here.
HIS VISION, YOUR MISSION You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you! The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members. CLICK HERE TO JOIN TODAY!

Pope Praises Knights: Renews Call to “Creative Courage” Pope Francis extended gratitude and well-wishes to the Knights of Columbus during the opening Mass of the organization’s 139th annual convention, held at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. The Holy Father also praised the convention’s theme, “Called to Creative Courage.” Referring to the Knights as, “a premier Catholic organization of men and fathers,” the Holy Father’s message urged members to be men of courageous witness, faith, and integrity. “Men,” it said, “committed to building up rather than tearing down, promoting healing and reconciliation in place of hatred and recrimination, and inviting all to undertake the ‘journey of fraternity’ that can lead to a world ever more in accord with God’s saving plan for our human family.” Pope Francis also sent prayerful good wishes to Patrick Kelly on his “new responsibilities as Supreme Knight, and to the members of the Supreme Council.” This convention marks Patrick Kelly’s first convention as supreme knight since being installed earlier this year.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT The first quarter of the fraternal year is behind us. Cleveland is currently in second place at 14.9% of our required gain for the 1850 target. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati jumped slightly ahead when the new council in Springfield went live. We still have plenty of time to catch them and win the Circle of Honor race. Trinity Council 4217 continues to hold the top spot with with six (6) new members and puts them at 179% of their quota. But there are some new additions to the Top-5 list that look to challenge them. October brings a new state membership incentive let along it is MEMBERSHIP DRIVE MONTH. The first five (5) councils who bring in five (5) new members with one being a student will receive $150. The first five (5) proposers who recruit one (1) new member will receive $25. Finally, five (5) of the new members that take their exemplification in October and transfer into a local council will receive $25 or a state council polo shirt.
If you are looking for members, they might be right there under your noses. Check the next page to see if your council has any active emembers or check your Prospect list on Officers Online via Supreme website.

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT The Report of Officers (185) and the Service Personnel Report (365) are now past due—78% of the councils have submitted the Form 185 while only 26% have the 365. State and Supreme needs these two reports to be able to assign Safe Environment training and background checks for the current council personnel. A list of the councils that have not completed those forms is below. If your council is listed, use Member Management via Supreme website to update. It is the fastest and most direct way to ensure the data is entered. If you are not using Member Management, email a PDF (fillable) to form185@kofcohio.org or form365@kofcohio.org. This way the State and Supreme will both receive a copy. If you submitted them to Supreme but still show up on this list, let Jim Maslach know so that we can check on the status with Supreme. Form 1295 Audits are past due. Please send those as soon as possible to form1295@kofcohio.org. KNIGHTS IN ACTION Knights of Columbus, local officials honor Summit County residents buried in unmarked graves TALLMADGE, Ohio - Area residents paid their respects on Saturday to those buried in more than 900 unmarked graves in a potter's field near the site of the former Summit County Home. The potters field is just off a trail that winds through the Summit Metro Parks Tallmadge Meadows area. A boulder with a plaque marks the entrance. Tallmadge Mayor David Kline, Fire Chief Michael Passarelli, and Munroe Falls Police Chief Jerry Hughes attended the ceremony hosted by the Tallmadge Knights of Columbus. The event featured the presentation of a colorful wreath of fresh flowers by a Knights of Columbus honor guard, which was accompanied by a bagpiper. The Knights of Columbus, a worldwide Catholic fraternal men’s service order, is dedicated to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Grand Knight of Our Lady of Victory Greg Tomei told onlookers the Knights of Columbus was started in 1882 as a way to support widows and orphans who lost their primary wage earner through disease, industrial accidents and other unfortunate events. “So it's been an honor today for our Lady of Victory Council and the Northeast Akron Council to be part of this event, to remember and pray for those who are buried here, who did not have family or friends to send them off,” he said. Knights of Columbus Recorder Cris Drugan gave a short history of the potter's field, which was used between 1919 until 1970. “For those of you don't know what a potter's field is, potter fields are paupers’ graves, or a common grave. It is a place for the burial of unknown, unclaimed or indigent people,” Drugan said to attendees. “That's who we're here to honor today.” Only three headstones stand in the cemetery, with two, back -to-back, memorializing John Keck and Constantina Plarinnos, who both died in 1935. A third stone honors “Unknown Skeletal Remains.” The grave contains the bones of people buried in an even older Tallmadge graveyard locals knew as Four Pines, which is now part of the Summit County Fairgrounds, according to records kept by the Tallmadge Historical Society.
