After years of education and formation, five people joined the ranks of certified lay ecclesial ministers in the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Four of the five received pins and official certification during a Mass celebrated by Bishop Edward Malesic on Oct. 23 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. The fifth was unable to attend due to an illness in the family.

NOVEMBER 2021
FATHER MCGIVNEY’S LEGACY A MAN OF THE PEOPLE At a memorial service for Father McGivney, with delegations attending from nearly all of the 57 local councils that had been chartered in the Order’s first eight years, this tribute was given by a brother Knight who later became a priest: He was a man of the people. He was zealous of the people’s welfare, and all the kindliness of his priestly soul asserted itself more strongly in his unceasing efforts for the betterment of their condition ...Oh, Reverend Founder. . .that act alone which gave life to the Knights of Columbus has surely secured for thee everlasting joy and eternal peace.
A PLACE OF PRAYER & PILGRAMAGE On the occasion of the centennial of the Knights of Columbus in 1982, initial steps were taken for the canonization cause. The body of Father McGivney was exhumed from the family burial plot in Waterbury, Conn., and reinterred in a polished granite sarcophagus in St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, where he had founded the Order. There the faithful could visit his tomb, pray for his intercession and invoke his spiritual strength. Following years of preparation, the canonization cause was officially opened December 18, 1997, in the chancery of the Archdiocese of Hartford, under the care of then Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin, and the Knights of Columbus became the leader or actor of the cause. Dominican Father Gabriel B. O’Donnell was appointed as the postulator (promoter). With approval from the Vatican (“nihil obstare”), Father McGivney was given the title “Servant of God,” the first step toward sainthood.
HIS VISION, YOUR MISSION You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you! The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members. CLICK HERE TO JOIN TODAY!

SUPREME NEWS & NOTES ALL IN GOD’S TIMING Patrick Kelly, Supreme Knight
Father McGivney’s beatification one year ago illuminates his life and witness for parish priests, Catholic men and families today GOD’S PROVIDENTIAL CARE works in marvelous and mysterious ways. One way is by giving every age the saints it needs. With eyes of faith, it is possible to see the wisdom of God’s timing as he provides the witnesses we need for the moment we are in. This is true for all the saints, but it was brought home to me in a specific way while reflecting on our Founder’s beatification, which took place one year ago, on Oct. 31, 2020. I find myself asking, “Why Father McGivney?” and “Why now?” None of us can know the mind of God, but I think there may be several reasons. In the first place, Blessed Michael McGivney was a parish priest. He was not called to contemplative life; rather, he was called to be Christ among the people — with all the pastoral challenges that entails. He knew well the strain that comes from being involved with the day-to-day struggles of his parishioners. Parish
priests today face their own challenges. More and more priests labor alone, administering two or more parish sites with diminishing resources and participation. When you add to this distrust resulting from the abuse crisis and the stress of pandemic restrictions on Mass attendance and parish life, it’s no wonder that many priests feel exhausted and demoralized. What better moment, then, for a model and an intercessor like Blessed Michael McGivney — a parish priest who ministered to parishioners struggling and suffering through the difficulties of their age, including fatherless families, addiction and even pandemic conditions. And he did this amid societal prejudice that treated Catholics — particularly priests as — pariahs. Moreover, in Father McGivney’s day, Catholic families faced an uphill climb. As immigrants, they grappled with bigotry, material poverty and the temptation to abandon their faith in order to and social acceptance. Many of Father McGivney’s parishioners had left largely Catholic homelands to come to a land where their beliefs were considered foreign and even suspect.
Similar challenges face our families today, under fierce pressure from outside forces. Increasingly, as they were the 1880s, Catholic families are tempted to accept secular ideologies and to abandon their faith in order to avoid the contempt of the world. As Christians, we are called to be in the world, but not of the world — and
that is getting more and more difficult by the day. We live in a time of great division, as proponents of political and cultural ideologies work hard to gain adherents while shouting down opposition. These fissures have found their way into our families, often pitting one generation against another. Our Founder knew that the answer for Catholic men and for Catholic families was to come together and to strengthen one another in faith. I believe that through Father McGivney’s beatification, our Lord is reminding Catholic men and families that we must be unified more than ever before. Finally, Father McGivney was a man of action. He saw the desperate situation of his parishioners and was not content merely to lament that reality. He acted — concretely and decisively. In founding the Knights of Columbus, he was calling men and families to rise and be bound together. Thus, I believe that our Founder’s beatification in this moment in history is no mere coincidence. We should look to his response to the needs of his time as a roadmap for our own response to the needs of our time. Let us continue to pray for Father McGivney’s canonization, even as his life and witness — brought into sharper focus by God’s providence — inspire our own actions in the days and years ahead. Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us!

EMEMBERSHIP So, you are a new grand knight or financial secretary and you get this email from the State indicating you have a new e-member candidate. Now what am I supposed to do with this???? Really, the process is quite simple and not all that different from when a candidate comes in the traditional way with a Form 100. The only difference, the e-member is already a Knight of Columbus. As an e-member, they are Knights—can get insurance and attend meetings and events—but really cannot do much else. When the state sends you an email with a proposed emember for your council, it is up to you and your team at the council to go through and interview him just like you would any other candidate. If he seems like a good fit for the council, send him to Exemplification—live or virtual. Once he is done with that, you will get notification that the member took the Exemp and can be transferred into your council. Go online to Officers Online, go to the Prospect tab and accept. DONE. The steps are outlined below and are included in every email that has an emember candidate. There are 46-eMembers available to transfer from the state council (98034) to your local council.
