PRATICAL VISION, ENDURING MISSION With an eye toward leading others to heaven, Father McGivney was attentive to the ways of the world as he worked to better the spiritual and temporal con ditions of h is immigrant parishioners. His innovative efforts to draw laypeople closer to Christ – especially through his founding of the fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus – was creative, effective and bold.

Falling ill during the global viral pandemic of 1889-90, Father McGivney developed tuberculosis struck and was forced to cut back on his routine to seek a cure. After months of heroic struggle against the illness, and after intense prayer for his parishioners and their future, he finally received the last rites and succumbed to pneumonia on Aug. 14, 1890, two days past his 38th birthday.
A priest who knew him well wrote: Genial, approachable, of kindly disposition, cheerful under reverses, profoundly sympathetic with those upon whom had fallen the heavy hand of affliction, a man of strict probity and sterling integrity in his business transactions. He was charitable to a fault ... The poor found in him a good Samaritan, and were the frequent recipients of his bounty. … There are few clergymen in my recollection who enjoyed in a greater degree than he the respect of his colleagues and the reverence of the people. … His energy was restless, ever seeking new outlets. And to this disposition are we indebted for the existence of the Knights of

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen

STATE OFFICER REPORT I am not much of a horse racing fan, but I did happen to catch a little bit about the Kentucky Derby. It amazes me how those horses can just endure the entire race—as short as it is—pushing themselves to the brink of exhaustion. And the jockeys—the ride must seem like it lasts forever even though it is between 2 and 3 minutes. And then there is the winner— surprise it was not the favorite. That race got me thinking about how we are coming to the end of this fraternal year. The state convention is next weekend at Kalahari. Councils will get awards for the work that they are doing, state business will be conducted and so on. But, there is still so much to do before the close of the fraternal year. Are you ready to push through to the end and finish the race? There are a number of things that still need to be done. •

Yes, there is still a lot to do and that finish line appears so far away. It is not really and you should already be working on those items. If you are, you are on your way to Star Council.

Measure Up Campaign 2022
The scheduled Measure Up Campaign dates for 2022 have come and gone. However, that does not mean that we are finished. Councils can still schedule standing out at your parishes, a fundraiser, or other activity that can help raise funds to support our brothers and sisters with developmental disabilities. The campaign officially closes on August 1, 2022 so that the state can turnaround those checks and get them back to the Financial Secretaries for distribution.
Silver Rose 2022 The Silver Rose will be traveling through Ohio from June 26 to July 13, 2021. It will enter the state from Kentucky and start out in Cincinnati and finishing in the Steubenville Dioceses before heading to West Virginia. The Silver Rose will be traveling through the Cleveland Diocese on July 7 through 10. That means the Silver Rose will be making an appearance at the State Tour on July 10. Schedule with George Metz, DDC for more information. Not sure what to do with the Silver Rose. Check out the state website at www.kofcohio.org under ACTIVITIES > Pilgrim Icon Program. Information for St. Joseph Icon and Silver is there for your viewing pleasure.
Please send your check to State Warden Chris Sarka and use the Measure Up Grant Report Form available on the state website under PROGRAMS > Measure Up. Make all checks payable to the Ohio State Council Knights of Columbus. Thank you for all that you did, do and will continue to do for our brothers and sisters.
