KEEPING THE FAITH Father McGivney not only lived a life devoted to the Catholic faith; he also focused all his spiritual, mental and physical energies on helping others persevere and grow in that faith, and he guarded against whatever might diminish the practice of Catholicism.

For Father McGivney’s newly formed Knights, protecting the faith of Catholics was the prime concern, and this quickly took three forms. First, the Knights would serve as an antidote to those secret societies that lured Catholic men away from their faith by offering financial benefits.

Second, the Order’s insurance program would help keep Catholic families together when a breadwinner died; this would also help prevent a loss of faith among widows and orphans forced to live in state institutions or with non-Catholic relatives or adoptive families.

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Third, the Knights would champion the full rights of A mer ic an cit ize n shi p fo r Catholics. This, too, would support the Church, since ensuring equal rights for Catholics would help limit the social or civil pressure on them to abandon their faith.

HIS VISION, YOUR MISSION You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you! The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members. CLICK HERE TO JOIN TODAY!

AN INVITATION TO YOUNG FATHERS The Need Could Not Be Greater. Young fathers face serious challenges today. Knights of Columbus plays an important role in helping men to become better fathers, husbands and leaders. Together, we help each other find our mission and conform our lives to Christ and our principles – Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. When we lead in this way we experience fulfilment, relationships improve, and others follow. Family life and communities are strengthened. With this precious mission in our custody, we must spread the word to inform others about the features and benefits of joining our Order.

That is why the Supreme Council has developed a membership campaign to invite young men, specifically young fathers, to join the Order. Digital and print ads will be placed by the Supreme Council online and in select diocesan newspapers. We invite all brother Knights to join us in making an intentional effort to reach out to young fathers. This resource and all associated marketing assets are now available to you and fraternal leaders through our online Supply Store, accessible through the Officers Online portal. Please review this resource with your leadership teams and use its components in your efforts and campaigns. Let us pray that these renewed efforts may allow us to introduce our brotherhood and its many benefits to new fathers and men, and inspire them to join our Order. With the intercession of St. Joseph and our founder, Blessed Michael McGivney, we are confident we can surely summon the collective creative courage to do so. The kit is also available for download on the state website home page (www.kofcohio.org).

STATE ACTIVITIES Super Cash Bonanza Almost Reaches $1M in Sales The 2022 Super Cash Bonanza drawing was a HUGE success this year and I want to thank all of the great councils in the Archdiocese (and really around the state) who sold a record number of tickets this spring. Unofficially we may not have hit the one million dollars but we ended up at over $978,000 in sales. And don’t worry, the Charity Brothers will return in 2023 with a new video to kick off next year’s campaign. Aside from some unexpected technical issues we were able to stream the drawing on Saturday morning starting around 10:00 AM. You can watch the video by visiting the state council’s YouTube channel.

Silver Rose 2022 The Silver Rose will be traveling through Ohio from June 26 to July 13, 2021. It will enter the state from Kentucky and start out in Cincinnati and finishing in the Steubenville Dioceses before heading to West Virginia. The Silver Rose will be traveling through the Cleveland Diocese on July 7 through 10. That means the Silver Rose will be making an appearance at the State Tour on July 10. Schedule with George Metz, DDC for more information. Not sure what to do with the Silver Rose. Check out the state website at www.kofcohio.org under ACTIVITIES > Pilgrim Icon Program. Information for St. Joseph Icon and Silver is there for your viewing pleasure.

Upcoming State Programs Do not forget to get your Measure Up collections submitted to State Warden Chris Sarka. The campaign officially closes on August 1, 2022 so that the state can turnaround those checks and get them back to the Financial Secretaries for distribution. Support Our Seminarians (SOS) may have ended for the State Convention, the program is a year around opportunity to support our future priests. If your council has funds that you would like to donate, please send to IPSD Robert Byers. Checks will be distributed to the Vocation Directors on the State Tour July 10, 2022. KNIGHTS IN ACTION Memorial for Unborn Dedicated at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain The Knights of Columbus James L. Martin Council 637 in Lorain, with support from seven local Catholic parishes and the Catholic Cemeteries Association, spearheaded efforts to construct a Memorial for the Unborn in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The new memorial was dedicated during a ceremony on May 30, Memorial Day.

supported the project.

Joe Perez, past grand knight of the Lorain Council, said the group agreed to pursue the effort in order to remember the millions of babies who are conceived but never born. “It is a unique place of healing,” Perez said during remarks before the dedication. “This is a place of closure for families who have lost an unborn child.”

“We are adding a memorial to a group that until recently was forgotten,” Perez said, noting about one-third of pregnancies end in miscarriage, stillbirth or abortion. “We are remembering these gifts from God who were never born, those who never took a breath on earth. They are still children of God and are not forgotten,” he added.

Perez said he became aware that other K of C councils were erecting memorials to the unborn and he proposed the idea to the local group. He compiled statistics, presented the information to his fellow Knights and they agreed to pursue the initiative. It took about 18 months of planning for the memorial to become a reality. Seven Lorain County parishes – Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Lorain; Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain; St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Lorain; St. Mary Parish, Lorain; St. Peter Parish, Lorain; St. Anthony Parish, Lorain; and St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Elyria –

Father John Retar, pastor of St. Vitus Parish in Cleveland, offered prayers during the dedication and blessing of the memorial. For a decade, Father Retar served as pastor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini and St. Vincent de Paul parishes, both of which supported the project. He read from the Gospel of St. Mark in which Jesus tells the crowd to let the little children come to him. “The kingdom of God belongs to them,” he said.

Father Retar said, regardless of whether the child is lost or born. The dedication ceremony took place after the annual Memorial Day Mass at the cemetery. Father Frank Kosem, retired pastor of St. Jude Parish in Elyria, was the celebrant. Concelebrants were Father Bill Thaden, pastor of Sacred Heart Chapel in Lorain and Father Craig Hovanec, pastor of St. Peter Parish and Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, both in Lorain. Those attending the Mass were invited to process with K of C members and the priests to the memorial, a short distance from the mausoleum, where Mass was celebrated. Light refreshments and desserts followed the dedication ceremony at the K of C hall in Lorain. Catholic Diocese of Cleveland / May 31, 2022
