FAITH IN ACTION PRACTICAL CATHOLIC The one requirement of membership in the Knights of Columbus is that a man be a “practical Catholic” in union with the Holy See. What does the term “practical Catholic” mean? Faith for Father McGivney and his Knights was not simply knowing the catechism, important as that is. It was putting into practice the Great Commandment of Jesus: To love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself. True to the parable of the Good Samaritan, love of neighbor does not stop at the church door. It goes out into the streets, the highways and byways, to
encounter those on the margins of society – who were often immigrant Catholics in Father McGivney’s day – and bring them practical charity and fraternal love.

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen

NEWS & NOTES OUR DIOCESE A message from Bishop Malesic on today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision Science confirms that the human life of an individual begins at conception and our experience tells us that all human life is precious, fragile and given directly to us as a gift from God. We are brothers and sisters in our human family, made in the image and likeness of God. We are all called to live out our responsibility to protect and care for one another, whether born or unborn. I wholeheartedly applaud today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which reverses the grave injustice of 1973, when Roe v. Wade decided that a whole class of human beings, the preborn, are outside the protection of the law and had no constitutional right to life. Since that decision, more than 60 million innocent lives have been sadly ended. Now that Roe is overturned, states will again be able to protect the lives of preborn children and in doing so, also protect millions of women from the tragic consequences of abortion. The consistent teaching of the Church regarding the intrinsic evil of abortion seeks to secure all other rights as well. We are not a “single issue” Church; there are other extremely important rights that we must defend, to be sure; but these additional rights flow from and are rooted in the fundamental right to life itself. Now that the bane of Roe has been addressed, we must ensure that the rights of parents and their children are protected so that they may have what they need to prosper with dignity and hope. The Church is redoubling efforts to accompany women and couples who are facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies, offering them loving and compassionate care. The Diocese of
Cleveland has developed many ministries to serve expectant mothers who face difficult pregnancies and those who find it difficult to care for their children after they are born. Pregnant women can find help at local pregnancy centers, where they can get information about the pregnancy, undergo an ultrasound and receive assistance during their pregnancy. After birth, there are many resources available from nonprofit groups like the Christ Child Society, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland and others that can supply infant necessities like layettes, diapers, formula, cribs, strollers and more, as well as follow-up medical and mental health assistance for the mother and baby. And as the baby grows, other agencies like Help Me Grow offer additional assistance, including educational resources. Catholic Charities offers foster care and adoption services, as well. Another rapidly growing initiative is “Walking with Moms in Need,” sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This parish-based process helps parishioners connect with local mothers facing difficult or challenging pregnancies, identifying local resources and filling the gaps so that pregnant and parenting women receive the material, spiritual, and emotional support they need. People of faith also offer compassionate care for those women and men who have been affected by a procured abortion in the past. We offer God’s consistent mercy and reconciliation,
especially through the Bethesda House of Mercy as well as programs such as Project Rachel and Rachel’s Vineyard, whose ministries offer compassionate accompaniment and healing support. I know that there are those who will disagree with today’s ruling by the court. I pray for their conversion of heart because this decision is a major step forward in protecting all human life. As people of faith, we must be prepared to be patient with those who will continue to oppose us on this preeminent life issue. In all things, we will continue to proclaim the truth with charity. Let us pray together that God grant us the courage and wisdom to protect the gift of human life from conception to natural death and respect the lives of our brothers and sisters both born and yet to be born with great love. May our faithful witness soften the hearts and minds of those who reject the gift of life in any way. This we pray through Christ, our risen Lord. National Catholic News | June 24, 2022

There is still plenty for us to do and we are looking for a breakout year.
Similarly, at the state and diocesan levels, annual strategic plans are developed and submitted. The state submitted their plan back in May and shortly afterward, I submitted the diocesan plan. to be looking at to see if they fit the bill. As council leaders, ask your self these questions: 1. Do I/we modal the way? 2. Do I/we inspire a shared vision? 3. Do I/we challenge the process and seek different ways to do things? 4. Do I/we enable others to act? 5. Do I/we encourage the heart? I posted these questions on my mirror in the morning so that when I am getting ready, I can prepare myself for work and KofC. As leaders, we are challenged more and more today. AN INVITATION TO YOUNG FATHERS The Need Could Not Be Greater. Young fathers face serious challenges today. Knights of Columbus plays an important role in helping men to become better fathers, husbands and leaders. Together, we help each other find our mission and conform our lives to Christ and our principles – Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. When we lead in this way we experience fulfilment, relationships improve, and others follow. Family life and communities are strengthened. With this precious mission in our custody, we must spread the word to inform others about the features and benefits of joining our Order. That is why the Supreme Council has developed a membership campaign to invite young men, specifically young fathers, to join the Order. Digital and print ads will be placed by the Supreme Council online and in select diocesan newspapers.
What You Can Do 1. Identify Catholic fathers in your circle of family, friends, parish community. Set yourself a minimum goal, for example, reaching out to at least five fathers. 2. Broach the topics of leadership, faith, peace, sense of fulfilment or transmission of faith with them. These are often important concerns young fathers carry in their hearts. 3. Explain our mission to them. We empower Catholic men to live their faith at home, in their parish, at work and in their communities. 4. Invite them to visit kofc. org and consider speaking to their spouses about enrolling as a member. 5. Use components of this toolkit in your activities and communications throughout the year
Let us pray that these renewed efforts may allow us to introduce our brotherhood and its many benefits to new fathers and men, and inspire them to join our Order. With the intercession of St. Joseph and our founder, Blessed Michael McGivney, we are confident we can surely summon the collective creative courage to do so. The kit is also available for download on the state website home page (www.kofcohio.org). 7

KNIGHTS IN ACTION School Bus Safety Concern: Knights of Columbus & Children’s Safety
Brother Rudy Breglia of Council #3269 wants to alert Catholic schools to a school bus safety concern that can be fixed with lap-shoulder seat belts, the same belts that are now found in every car. Rudy started this Program with the support of his Council nearly 6 years ago when a school bus crashed in Chattanooga, TN and killed six children. He has presented the facts about the safety and behavior benefits of seat belts to a substantial number of public schoolrelated personnel as well as government groups and was instrumental in helping three Ohio public school districts decide to buy new school buses with seat belts installed. Now, Catholic schools need to be made aware of the “seat belts in school buses” issue and the gamble both public school districts and Catholic schools are taking when their school buses are not equipped with lapshoulder seat belts. By law in Ohio, public school districts must provide school buses that our Catholic school children use and concern needs to be expressed about the risk that those children face while being transported without lap-shoulder seat belts. Current Ohio school buses safety features are known to be inadequate to
protect children fully. In a crash when a school bus “spins out”, “rolls over” or has a "side crash", unbelted children* become airborne, are ejected or fly freely inside the cabin to hit other children, the roof or fixed internal structures. A10year North Carolina study found that these types of bus crashes occur at a significant rate, e.g. more than 30%. The children in these crashes have no protection and face increased risk of injury and death. In the US, six to seven innocent children (9 in 2016) are senselessly killed every year as passengers in school bus accidents, more than 17,000 are injured. Anyone of the ~1200 Ohio school bus crashes that occur every year can be just as tragic as the horrendous as the November, 2016 Chattanooga crash (See Thornville Ohio Crash Below**). Worldwide, the trend is to install seat belts as a safety tool in new school buses. All cars have lifesaving seat belts since 1968, Ohio school bus drivers are required to have protective seat belts since 1986 and nine states (18%) and several cities currently have requirements for seat belts in school buses. According to the Ohio Tort Liability Act all school districts have unlimited compensatory damage liability for student fatalities and injuries from school bus crashes. Lap-shoulder seat belts are a safe, familiar, effective, low-cost (<$5/ student/year or <0.5% of total yearly transportation cost/student of $1000), recommended by the NTSB***, NHTSA and 13 prominent safety-related organizations and are a means of protection that can significantly overcome transportation risk*** for children. Three Ohio school districts (Avon Lake, Hudson & Beachwood) have purchased school buses with lapshoulder seat belts to proactively protect their children. Brother Rudy Breglia (440
-930-0251or rudybreglia@gmail.com), is a citizen, non-commercial advocate for seat belts in school buses and is available to answer questions and/or give presentations on the issue to any size audience without charge and has a website with information (http:// schoolbusseatbeltsafety). The Ultrasound Initiative began in 2005, since then over 1,500 machines have been placed in pregnancy centers which either had no access or were greatly in need of modern technology. Ohio has placed 79 machines and currently ranks 5th in the nation behind Michigan, Texas, California and Florida. (Yes Michigan is beating us). We are presenting these facts as a challenge and an opportunity for every council in the diocese. Together we are stronger. Unified, we save lives. You can raise funds as a single council with your own initiative and we are here to help you. We have approved customized marketing materials, are actively working with the diocese, and also have US Ultrasound here in northeast Ohio on board as a supplier. We will provide you with a blueprint for what to do and how to do it.
You also could partner with us. Lets work jointly together and continue what is already underway. Holy Family Council 15614 began on their own and raised a good sum of money on their own. They decided to join their funds with ours and we were able to immediately acquire the second ultrasound machine for the diocese. St. Bernadette Council is also partnering with us which will enable the purchase of a third Ultrasound machine. Again, Supreme matches every dollar individually or jointly, but half the funds must first be raised.
By meeting the challenge of the Ultrasound Initiative on your own or by partnering, we will save lives. But why take this time valuable to state the obvious? Because here in front of all of us today is a powerful tool to fund this initiative. Raffle tickets. Every dollar raised from the Super Cash Bonanza Raffle must be dedicated to a charitable cause and we can think of a no greater cause than life. We ask that you consider dedicating a portion of the funds you raise to go towards the Ultrasound Initiative.
By starting your own initiative or partnering with us, the Knights of Columbus in the Cleveland diocese will save lives. Unified in mission, just as fibers of that same rope, we are stronger when we pull together.
