Seven years later, as pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Father McGivney’s workload only increased, with a mission church added to his duties. Falling ill during the global viral pandemic of 1889 90, Father McGivney developed tuberculosis struck and was forced to cut back on his routine to seek a cure. After months of heroic struggle against the illness, and after intense prayer for his parishioners and their future, he finally received the last rites and succumbed to pneumonia on Aug. 14, 1890, two days past his 38th Thebirthday.funeral Mass and procession were attended by Knights and other Catholics from across Connecticut, and even secular news reports described him as an exemplary priest and a model Christian man.
You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you! The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members.
CLICK HERE TO JOIN TODAY! God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen
With an eye toward leading others to heaven, Father McGivney was attentive to the ways of the world as he worked to better the spiritual and temporal conditions of his immigrant parishioners. His innovative efforts to draw laypeople closer to Christ especially through his founding of the fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus was creative, effective and bold. A priest who knew him well wrote: Genial, approachable, of kindly disposition, cheerful under reverses, affliction, whomprofoundlysympatheticwiththoseuponhadfallentheheavyhandofamanofstrictprobityand sterling integrity in his business transactions. He was charitable to a fault ... The poor found in him a good Samaritan, and were the frequent recipients of his bounty. … There are few clergymen in my recollection who enjoyed in a greater degree than he the respect of his colleagues and the reverence of the people. … His energy was restless, ever seeking new outlets. And to this disposition are we indebted for the existence of the Knights of Columbus. When he arrived for his first assignment at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, he met an ailing pastor who had to turn much of the pastoral work over to his new assistant. In a letter to his seminary mentor, he wrote that the whole work of the parish had been laid upon his shoulders and he had been unable to take even one day off.

Supreme Knight Challenges
Supreme Knight Kelly reminded the nearly 2,400 Knights in attendance that “a Knight is a leader who stands in the breach.” “We defend the faith. We protect the family. And when a need arises, we rise to meet it with charity, unity and fraternity,” said the supreme knight.
Supreme Knight Kelly applauded the Knights for standing in the breach to protect and defend the sanctity of life. The Knights were instrumental in organizing the first national March for Life in 1974, and year after year, they’ve helped it grow. Today, the March for Life has become the largest annual human rights demonstration in the Supremeworld.Knight Kelly also urged Knights to deepen their devotion and to trust in strength from God as they continue in their mission for the Church and the family. The supreme knight announced the coming launch of a new discipleship and evangelization initiative built on the foundation of the Into the Breach video series, which has been viewed more than a million times. In addition, the Order will release a new series on marriage and family in the coming year. In concluding his report, Supreme Knight Kelly delivered a resounding call to action to the 2 million Knights of Columbus worldwide, saying, “Our moment is now. And our mission is clear: Preserve life, protect the family, proclaim the faith. The world needs men who will match these times. And we are rising to meet this challenge.”

STATE OFFICER REPORT
I hope that your council has submitted their Measure Up Campaign donations and lists to our State Warden Chris Sarka. The checks should start coming out in September and will be sent to the FS of record. Thank you again for supporting our “flagship” charity. As part of Measure Up, PSD Robert Collins, DMD Mike Incorvati and I were able to be part of a team for the Special Olympics Golf Outing on August 22nd. Although the weather was wet (boy were we wet), getting the opportunity to play with some NFL Alumni was fantastic. It is through your donations to Measure Up that we are able to be a corporate sponsor for Special Olympics and support all that they do in Cleveland area and Ohio. Matching Funds program is now active. This year, we are continuing to accept donations for supporting religious education and evangelization in the diocese. Last year, we were able to present a check for just under $10,000 to the diocese. Let us just give $20 more this year. If your council did not participate last year, please consider it this year. The first $25,000 donated will be matched by the Ohio Charity Foundation. So, it get your donation in early as possible. If your council does not have the funds, let me know and we can work out something to ensure your participation. Football Crazr tickets are out there. Here is your opportunity to raise some funds for you to support your activities. Yes, it is a $20 ticket but it is only $2 per week for 10 weeks with a chance to win one of 20+ prizes EACH week. Knowing PSD Gary Eckstein, I am sure that there will be a surprise or two at the end of the season. If you need more tickets, contact PSD Gary Eckstein

Welcome to September. Here did the first two months of this fraternal year go. We had the June DD meeting, state tour and … that is right … the 140th Supreme Convention in Nashville. Busy summer as always and I am sure your councils have been. Planning and getting things ready for another charitable and growing year for our Order in Cleveland and Ohio! Let me give you a brief glimpse into the Supreme Convention. First thing was the location Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, TN. This place is HUGE! At Minneapolis in 2019, it was 864 steps from the our room to the convention center. This year, the steps were a lot less to the convention, but nearly doubled just to get the to hospitality room. I actually lost weight on this trip.
for the convention included the Opening Mass with the long but impressive procession of cardinals, bishops, state chaplains, and honored guests. I really enjoyed the “running of the bulls.” For those of you that have not been to a Supreme Convention before, it is the responsibility of the State Warden and Advocate to be at the doors early to obtain seats for the delegates, guests and state officers attending. So, Chris Sarka and I were standing at the doors at 7AM for a 9:30 AM Mass. We did get the seats we wanted and the other officers jumped in when they came down. That scenario repeated for the next three days. Minnesota jumped in front of us and there was Gary Nolan telling us to all to stop running. Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly’s State of the Order address is something that you all need to either read or watch. “We defend the faith. We protect the family. And when a need arises, we rise to meet it with charity, unity and fraternity,” said the supreme knight. Supreme Knight Kelly reminded the nearly 2,400 Knights in attendance that “a Knight is a leader who stands in the breach.” Visit www.kofc.org and click on Convention Highlights. There you can read the entire Steppingreport.upand standing in the breach in a world today is challenging and nerve racking. We must find ways to get the message out working in our parishes and communities. I have faith that you will be able to meet those challenges head on in true Cleveland Byspirit.now,

Every September a non profit organization known as Life Happens coordinates the Life Insurance Awareness Month campaign. This campaign is dedicated to informing people about how important life insurance is to protect their families. Life insurance is a cornerstone of a family’s future financial security. Blessed Michael McGivney certainly knew how important life insurance was to a family. But many members don’t understand how involved Fr. McGivney was in developing the Order’s insurance program. According to Christopher Kauffman, the author of the centennial history of the Order, Faith and Fraternalism, The History of the Knights of Columbus 1882 1982, one of Fr. McGivney’s two main reasons for founding the Order was “the need to protect families during sickness and death.” (pg. 17) Kauffman goes on to say that Fr. McGivney “spent his energy in promoting the insurance feature.” (pg. 35) Originally, when the Order was founded, there was no such thing as an “associate member.” Everyone was insured; that was one of those two primary reasons for joining. While the Order is now well known for its charitable works and strong advocacy for the most vulnerable, strengthening men in their faith and protecting them and their families with life insurance were twin catalysts in forming the Order. While young Catholic men still seek to strengthen their faith, we know families still need protection from untimely death. This mission remains just as important today.

5-Tips to Help Prevent Scams Scammers steal billions every year, but you may thwart their efforts by observing a few important principles:
1. Relax, Don’t Lunge Scammers love to create a sense of alarm and urgency designed to shortcut your inner scam detector. Slow your pace, and ask as many questions as needed. A legitimate business representative will never act annoyed by your valid inquiries.
2. Be Your Own Private Investigator This is often as easy as double checking the details you’ve been given. You can hang up on that dubious, unexpected phone call and look up the bank, agency or organization from which it purportedly originated. You can call the business or agency directly. Again, legitimate businesses do not mind answering your questions.
4. If Something Seems Too Good to Be True, It Probably Is Say you spot a brand name item on sale that you’ve been waiting to buy.
3. Hold Off on Paying — Don’t Hit Send! ONLY disreputable individuals or companies demand immediate payment. Scammers will commonly ask you to buy gift cards. Why? Gift cards are easy to purchase and have fewer protections. And these cards don't leave a paper trail. There will never be a legitimate business situation where you can pay a fine, fee, or any other financial agreement or arrangement with a gift card. Payment under threat usually means you are being scammed.
5. If A Situation Feels ‘Off’ Move On A situation should feel “off” if the business or individual won’t give you written confirmation of what you’re agreeing to, or if they ask you to give away personal information like passwords or PINs.

The Matching Funds Campaign will run from September 1, 2022, through November 15, 2022. The Ohio Charity Foundation, Inc. of the Ohio State Council is once again able to match the first $25,000 donated to this year’s program. All contributions from your council and participating councils from your diocese, as well as any amounts matched, will go to the Religious Education Department of our Diocese. Our goal for the 2022 is $75,000 and 75% participation from assemblies, councils, and chapters. It is a stretch goal given that many of our councils are still coming out of COVID, but “All things are possible with God” on our side! To reach this goal, I am asking every council to work toward donating at least the same amount as you did in 2021 plus $20.00 or more. I have faith that the Knights of Columbus across this great state of Ohio will be able to contribute as generously as they have in past years.
It has always amazed me the dedication and commitment the Knights of Columbus have to Catholic education. Our assemblies, councils, and chapters show that the Knights understand the importance of and need to continue teaching our faith. Thank you for your donations last year as we were able to distribute over $65,000 to the six diocese and support evangelization and faith formation at the grass roots level. That was last year and 2022 is upon us. Our campaign will continue “Growing the Faith Through Catholic Education.” The circumstances our church faces have not changed and your contribution to Matching Funds is more important than ever. Your donation will assist in growing Catholic Education for every Catholic school, PSR/CCD, youth ministries, and RCIA program in your diocese here in Ohio. And there is an even greater need now for technical equipment and digital resources to spread the good word and teach our Catholic faith.

The Star Council Award recognizes overall excellence in the areas of growing membership, promoting Knights of Columbus insurance benefits, sponsoring Catholic faith formation programs and volunteering time through service oriented activities. “We’re here because we help those who can’t help themselves,” said Grand Knight Randy Higgins, of Council 4498. “Everyone has a role. I try to empower these guys to do what they do and give them what they need to succeed. It’s almost like all these guys are the grand knight of their particular category of what they do.” Among the many programs the Willowick Knights completed included education on the Rosary, keeping Christ in Christmas, Coats for Kids, a clothing drive, socks for infants and mothers in need and parishioners with epilepsy. In addition, the local council partakes in two to three seminars per year to promote the Knights of Columbus’ insurance. “We do so much,” said Community Director Mark Blase, a past grand knight of the Willowick council. “We do the grounds here to make sure everything is weeded and cleaned up. Coats for kids last year — we collected maybe 100 coats, but we also bought four boxes. We collected over 7,000 pounds worth of clothes. We took that to the thrift store and raised over $1,600.”

There are currently 95 members who are a part of the council, with between 15 and 25 who regularly attend meetings.
Within the Willowick council, everyone tries to help one another, said Ken Enos, the council’s life director who was the head of the Socks for Kids program, as well as the baby bottle drive and the parishioners with epilepsy program. More than $2,000 was raised to help expecting mothers and those already with children.

KNIGHTS IN ACTION
The Knights of Columbus Council 4498 in Willowick has spent the year completing programs that represented unity, charity and fraternity and those efforts recently earned it the distinction of Star Council, the international organization’s top honor for local councils.
“It makes my job easier to recruit people when they see what we do in the church and the community, and they want to become knights,” said Greg Tabar, the membership director, noting that the council has a goal of gaining five new members sometime this year. “It’s not just the big projects we do, but a lot of every day work. We have a goal of five new people to join this year.”
At one point and time, there was talk of the Willowick knights dissolving as there weren’t enough members, Ezzo recalled. “Father (Steve Breck of St. Mary Magdalene) did not want us to dissolve,” he said. “He did a great drive as far as getting everybody back and getting more members in.”
As the faith director of the Willowick Knights, Tony Linc spends time educating members on the Rosary and its beginnings, and the significance it has. “We encourage everybody to bring the rosary every day,” he said. “It’s a powerful prayer.” One of the biggest aspects within the Knights of Columbus is keeping Christ in Christmas, noted Jim Ezzo, family director. Due to the pandemic, the program had to be modified. “There’s several programs, but I felt that was an important one to get going,” Ezzo said. “We’re trying to bring family back into the church and the community, and we had things set up last year, but because of (the coronavirus), we postponed. We did buy keep Christ in Christmas ornaments and it was attached to a prayer card. This year, we’re going to do a prayer service with kids, moms and dads.”
“The spirit of unity is something we don’t have much of,” said George Burke, a Willowick Knights member. “It’s a wonderful thing they (Willowick Knights) express a tremendous spirit. They pull a lot of people together and I don’t think there’s anything greater.” Kevin O’Neill, a Willowick Knights member and past grand knight, finds that the more the knights do, the more people are interested in joining.

We are always looking for that next leader to be a District Deputy here in the Cleveland Diocese. Being a District Deputy allows for you to draw on your KofC and professional skills to help lead, mentor and guide councils in your area. We are in need of a couple of District Deputies in the NE and Southern areas of the diocese. If you are interested, contact George Metz or Jim Maslach for more information.

We are seeking financial professionals to serve as insurance agents and investment advisory representatives (IAR). Working with the Knights of Columbus as a financial professional is unlike any other career opportunity you’ll come across. We are a not for profit charitable membership organization that helps provide financial security to its members and their families through its insurance programs and investments while also engaging in charitable works. Each Knights of Columbus financial professional is assigned to a territory of Knights of Columbus families. Our agents and advisors offer meaningful insurance and financial solutions to our Catholic members and their families and join our members in building our church and serving our communities. Call Jason at 800 484 0304 or Chris at 440 973 8288 x3 if you would like more information on this great opportunity.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
The Ohio Charity Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that, for the 2022 2023 school year, numerous $1,000 scholarships will once again be made available for Ohio Catholic students (grades nine through twelve) attending Catholic High Schools in Ohio. This is the twenty sixth consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus Scholarships have been awarded to our outstanding Catholic High School students. More than $839,475 has been awarded during that period. The requirements that will be considered for this scholarship are the student’s and families financial need, a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher, academic awards, community and/or parish involvement, and extracurricular activities. Preference may be given to students who are sons or daughters of a Knight of Columbus member in good standing; or a son or daughter of a deceased member. We have a particular desire to help students, who may be considering a religious vocation, stay in a Catholic High School to foster and encourage that calling. No more than one Foundation scholarship per Catholic High School will be awarded. Scholarships from other donations and private sources may also be made available. Did a deserving student in your high school receive one? Please encourage every student who fits the qualifications to apply for the Knights of Columbus Scholarship. Visit www.ohiocharityfoundation.org/ scholarships/ for more information and an application.
