1 CHARITY * UNITY * FRATERNITY * PATRIOTISM OCTOBER 2022 FAITH FAMILY COMMUNITY LIFE Bishop Malesic offers a special message for October, Respect Life Month

For more than a century, Father McGivney’s legacy has been lived out in the hearts, minds and helping hands of his Knights of Columbus. Where there is a need, there is a Knight.

Numbers do not tell the whole story of Father McGivney’s ongoing inspiration of the Order he founded, but they do provide an important perspective.

Today, there are more than 2 million members of the Knights of Columbus in more than 16,000 local councils located in more than a dozen countries around the world. In 2019, these Knights together donated $187 million to charity and provided 77 million hours of volunteer work. Over the past decade, the Order has donated more than $1.6 billion to worthy causes.

In addition, the insurance program that Father McGivney began in 1882 to support families when a member died has grown from the simple seeds he

HIS LEGACY

sowed. Today, the Knights of Columbus is a modern Fortune 1000 company that has more than $100 billion in financial protection in force for Knights and their families. Death benefits to survivors and regular dividends to policyholders translate each year to thousands of

The heart and soul of the Order are found in the local councils, where ordinary men work together to perform extraordinary deeds for church and community, according to the Faith in Action model.

mortgages kept, college tuitions paid, retirements secured, and futures assured and every dollar of assets is invested according to Catholic moral principles.

The legacy of Father McGivney is also found in the countless smiles of children

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor.

Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request).

Through Christ our Lord. Amen

With an Order based on charity, unity and fraternity, Father McGivney unleashed the grace of good works for generations, and today’s Knights carry on his legacy of building a better world for all.

SUPREME NEWS & NOTES

Mother Teresa: No Greater Love Vatican Premiere

The much anticipated documentary Mother Teresa: No Greater Love premiered in Vatican City on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the prestigious Filmoteca Vaticana. Earlier that day, Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly, an executive producer of the feature length documentary, presented Pope Francis with a copy of the film at a general audience in Paul VI hall.

“I was very happy to present a copy of the documentary to Pope Francis, who received it with enthusiasm,” said Supreme Knight Kelly. “When Mother Teresa was feeding the hungry or holding the hands of someone as they lay dying, she was treating them as she would the most important person in her life, Jesus Christ himself. Our hope is that Mother Teresa: No Greater Love will inspire a new generation to carry on her mission.”

In a letter to the supreme knight, the pope expressed gratitude to the filmmakers, writing, “Thank you for all the efforts made to capture the life of this

STATE OFFICER REPORT

Happy October! I am writing to you from the state of Washington where I have come out here to visit my parents and to check on them. It has been a great trip and all is well here. I know that there is some work here that I need to do for them and will but it is only the beginning.

Just like that, we are now a quarter of the way through the fraternal year. Do you know where your council stands? 44% of our active councils are making efforts in growth, programs, report submissions, and safe environment. That is a good start and let us hope that you will continue to do the best that you can for those you all serve. Continue to work toward Star Council because in doing so, you will succeed, grow and become a thriving council.

Growth continues to do well as we are slowly converting eMembers to local council members as well as welcoming new members into our ranks. We are in first place at the first turn at 16.9% of our target. But Columbus and Cincinnati are breathing down our necks. Keep up the great job recruiting with a Blitz in October! See the great incentives our State Membership Director Michael Freil and his team put together for you.

Forms are coming in and we are slowly getting them entered into the database. Supreme is 6 8 weeks behind in processing of forms. So, if you sent your forms in via email, you should have a confirmation message from Supreme. You are good, just need to wait. If you sent the forms in via USPS, they will take considerably longer to process. If

you use Member Management, BOOM it is updated as soon as you hit submit. Please make sure your forms are submitted in a timely fashion. Need help, please ask.

Mother Teresa lived her life in service of others. Her journey on earth brought healing and hope to thousands of people who were left abandoned and hopeless. The Knights of Columbus have helped put together a movie about her life and the struggles that she had to endure to lead the life God was calling her. As Knights, we have that same calling, one

Thank you to Lorain Council 637 and South Akron Council 3410 for hosting training sessions in September. Based on the less than stellar attendance, I am assuming that you all know everything. So, there should be no questions right? I doubt it but do not worry. There will be another session on Monday October 17 at Mary, Queen of Peace. Look for an official announcement soon. Plus, you can get all of the Supreme training online by visiting the Training Opportunities page here in this newsletter or online.

of service service to ourselves, our families, our brothers, and our communities. It is that bond that drives each of us to do better than the last time, to take the risk and a new program or event, and to lead those back to Jesus Christ.

Thank you to all of the assemblies, chapter and councils that have submitted donations to the Matching Funds Campaign. We are just one month into the program but the returns across the state, and here in the Cleveland Diocese, have been encouraging. Let us continue to support Catholic Education here in Ohio and in

Finally, Priesthood Sunday is coming and all of the District Deputies are required to help distribute vocations literature on Saturday, October 15. If you cannot, please make arrangements or a designee to be there at the CPL in Wickliffe. George Metz, DDC, will bring that up at our quarterly meeting on Sunday, October 9 at 7PM via Zoom.

I am so proud of the work that you all are doing to grow the Order and to serve those in need. We must continue to that with all of our energy to be that strong right arm of the church. It is truly an honor to work with you and for you. If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of the diocesan team.

“The BLITZ” Is Back For October !!

The Month of October has traditionally been recognized as Membership Drive Recruitment Month. For many years, it was called Membership Blitz. A few years ago the term was changed to Church Drives. Well guess what, the BLITZ is back in OHIO for October. Yes, all State of Ohio Councils are going to conduct an OCTOBER MEMBERSHIP BLITZ DRIVE. It will start on October1 and go through October 31.

You should have already ordered your Membership Drive kits from Supreme Supplies. It is still not too late to order them now if you have not done so. Go to Officers online To order supplies for your next Recruitment Drive, officers with access to Officers Online should log in, click the Supplies Online Link, and search under Kits.

The next thing you need to do is contact your Parish Priest and ask permission to conduct a Delta Church Drive during OCTOBER. Then you should print a small article in your Parish Bulletin letting Men/Families know, that the Knights of Columbus in your Parish are inviting good Catholic Men to join us. Remember to emphasize that when a Knight, they will become Better in their Faith, Better Husbands, and Better

Fathers.

Where there is a Need, there’s a Knight. We help out our Parishes, Our Parish Priests, and our Community. And when there’s a Knight in Need, we help Him and or his Family. We are a Catholic Fraternal Brotherhood promoting our Faith and Life, and we are changing the world. Together we are empowering Catholic Men to Live their Faith at Home, in their Parish, at their Work and in their Community.

Start finalizing your OCTOBER BLITZ now. Do not wait any longer. Plan this out and make your Council have a Positive Growth for October. Write a couple of articles to put in your Parish bulletin for October inviting men to join. Schedule a Degree this month don’t make a prospect wait or you will lose him.Remember the quickest and easiest way for a man to join now is Online. KofC.org/joinus.

Every council that conducts a Delta Church Drive, Conducts a Degree and brings in 5 new members during October will receive a check for $200. What are you waiting for?

The Ohio Charity Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that, for the 2022 2023 school year, numerous $1,000 scholarships will once again be made available for Ohio Catholic students (grades nine through twelve) attending Catholic High Schools in Ohio. This is the twenty sixth consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus Scholarships have been awarded to our outstanding Catholic High School students. More than $839,475 has been awarded during that period.

The requirements that will be considered for this scholarship are the student’s and families financial need, a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher, academic awards, community and/or parish involvement, and extracurricular activities. Preference may be given to students who are sons or daughters of a Knight of Columbus member in good standing; or a son or daughter of a deceased member. No more than one Foundation scholarship per Catholic High School will be awarded. Scholarships from other donations and private sources may also be made available.

Did a deserving student in your high school receive one? Please encourage every student who fits the qualifications to apply for the Knights of Columbus Scholarship. Visit www.ohiocharityfoundation.org/ scholarships/ for more information and an application.

KNIGHTS IN ACTION

Big Trucks Day in Avon Lake

Brother Rudy Breglia of Council #3269 wants to alert Catholic schools to a school bus safety concern that can be fixed with lap shoulder seat belts, the same belts that are now found in every car.

Thought you might want to see a recent activity on the seat belts in school buses Issue. Big Trucks Day in Avon Lake: A "Seat Belt in School Buses" information table was at the Big Trucks Day Event on 9/17, 10AM 2PM with fashion model I hired to draw a crowd. Was stationed in a good spot across from the fire trucks/emergency response vehicles with lots of foot traffic between the food trucks and the indoor vendors in the Fire House. Gave out literature and spoke to lots of parents (mostly "short elevator talk") and local officials (Uncle Sam = KC Zuber Council Member) & candidates. Encouraged all to speak with their school districts about the risk their children face without seat belts. Kids sat in the seat assembly & buckled up for pictures. Need more more suckers & coloring books next year & maybe crayons. US Maps with states requiring seat belts school bus (18% of US states) made a big hit.

Handed out a published Knights of Columbus article that summarizes the issue as well as a list of conclusions supporting the life saving and injury preventing benefits of seat belts. Primary conclusion was that current Ohio school bus safety features are inadequate to protect children fully! Hope all is well. Seat Belts Save Lives. Rudy Breglia
