KNIGHTS IN ACTION
For more than a century, Father McGivney’s legacy has been lived out in the hearts, minds and helping hands of his Knights of Columbus. Where there is a need, there is a Knight.
Numbers do not tell the whole story of Father McGivney’s ongoing inspiration of the Order he founded, but they do provide an important perspective.
Today, there are more than 2 million members of the Knights of Columbus in more than 16,000 local councils located in more than a dozen countries around the world. In 2019, these Knights together donated $187 million to charity and provided 77 million hours of volunteer work. Over the past decade, the Order has donated more than $1.6 billion to worthy causes.
In addition, the insurance program that Father McGivney began in
1882 to support families when a member died has grown from the simple seeds he sowed. Today, the Knights of Columbus is a modern Fortune 1000 company that has more than $119 billion in financial protection in force for Knights and their families. Death benefits to survivors and regular dividends to
also found in the countless smiles of children receiving winter coats; bags of food delivered to families in need; extra gifts beneath Christmas trees; homes built by sweat equity with Habitat for Humanity; unborn lives saved through the Ultrasound Initiative; and millions of prayers offered every day by Knights and their families for peace, healing and reconciliation.
The heart and soul of the Order are found in the local councils, where ordinary men work together to perform extraordinary deeds for church and community, according to the Faith in Action model.
policyholders translate each year to thousands of mortgages kept, college tuitions paid, retirements secured, and futures assured and every dollar of assets is invested according to Catholic moral principles.
The legacy of Father McGivney is
God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.
Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request).
Through Christ our Lord. Amen
With an Order based on charity, unity and fraternity, Father McGivney unleashed the grace of good works for generations, and today’s Knights carry on his legacy of building a better world for all.
HIS VISION, YOUR MISSION
You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you!
The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members.

LIFE AFTER DOBBS
Shortly after losing its case before the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022, Jackson Women’s Health Organization announced it was moving from Mississippi to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Pro-life leaders in the city soon made their own announcement: They would be opening a pregnancy resource center and medical clinic just beside the abortion facility. Within a few days, local Knights of Columbus were working on providing the new Guiding Star Las Cruces with a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine to serve pregnant women and help them see their unborn babies. OKLAHOMA KNIGHTS HONOR OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
On Dec. 11, 2022, thousands gathered at the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in Oklahoma City for the dedication of Tepeyac Hill, a recreation of the site in Mexico City where Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531. The ceremony included the blessing of newly installed statues of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, funded by Oklahoma Knights. The dedication of the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine took place Feb. 17.. “We’re very proud to have the Knights involved in this project,” said Archbishop Paul Coakley.
REBUILDING WITH ‘RADICAL LOVE’
After vandals attacked the Women’s Care Center in Peoria, Illinois, in May 2021, the pregnancy resource center needed immediate assistance. Its lobby was incinerated, its baby supplies lost, and its ultrasound machine damaged by heat and smoke. St. Clement Council 12407 in Dunlap came to the rescue with tens of thousands of dollars in donations, as well as hands on help. “All I can say is we would not be here without the Knights of Columbus,” said Anne Kube, president of the center’s board of directors. “They have been our ‘Knights in shining armor.’”

STATE OFFICER REPORT
Welcome to March and we are now into Lent. I hope and pray that your Lent opens your hearts and mind to the resurrection that is coming very soon. March is a very busy month for our councils. Simply checkout the calendar later on in this issue. There are opportunities for spiritual growth, great food, and some fellowship.
I would like to thank Councils 3410, 4130 and 16373 for hosting the recent Super Cash Bonanza Roadshows. All three locations had great turnouts you all now have the tickets to sell and help your charitable outreach programs. Good luck to all! If you need more tickets, please reach out to George Metz, Mike Incorvati, or myself. We will get them to you. There are some posters left. Let us know if you need any.
The state convention is fast approaching and the state officers and the Columbus team are working to make this better than last year. The state convention this year is May 1921, 2023, at the Columbus Hilton Downtown. This will be a precursor to the 2025 convention that will be at the Cleveland Hilton Downtown. Look for an email to come out by the week of March 6 followed-up with a USPS letter. If there are any questions, please consult the State Convention
webpage at www.kofcohio.org. Please note, if your council has any resolutions to submit to for the state convention, those need to be sent to me no later than April 15. Consult the email that Supreme sent to all of the GKs and DDs on resolutions.
The Cleveland Diocesan Free Throw Championship is Sunday, March 5 at St. Hilary. District Deputies please see the email from DDC George Metz on the time you are supposed to be there. PLEASE BRING YOUR WINNER SCORESHEETS! Contestants and spectators are welcome to arrive by 1PM. The winners will move on to the State Championship on Saturday, March 18 in Columbus.
Live and in-person Exemplifications are increasing and thank you to all of the councils taking the step to help our new brothers come into the Order. There will be a special Exemplification on March 25 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership where we will be inviting those seminarians who are not members and those that are 1st or 2nd degree members, to become 3rd degree members. Please keep these men in your prayers not only for being open to joining our ranks, but for the vocation that they are partaking.
The Bishop’s Brunch is on Sunday, March 26. The committee has been working hard to make this another outstanding event in support of all the seminarians. That evening, the Knights of Columbus will be attending the Cleveland Cavaliers game against the Houston Rockets at 6PM at RocketMortgage Fieldhouse. The winners from the State Free Throw and the participants from the council, district, and/or diocesan level will get acknowledged.
Couple all of that with our fish fries, council meetings and activities, March is going to be another fast moving month and BOOM April is here. Make sure you get your programs and activities submitted before April 15 for your chance to show off what your councils are doing. Cleveland is doing a fantastic job of recruiting and programing where all of you are putting your faith into action! How great that is to see. God bless you all. Have a blessed Lent and will see you all soon.
STATE GROWTH REPORT
Recruiting a New Member into the Order is one of the most important and noteworthy accomplishment that Any Knight can achieve. New members keep our organization and your Councils vibrant and ensure our success in the years ahead. When a Proposer recruits a New Member, he will receive 500 VIP Points from Supreme headquarters to use at Knights Gear. A collection of these points can earn you some nice gift items that are in the catalog at www.knightsgear.com.
Important things to remember for Membership in Fraternal year 20222023
Just about every month throughout the Fraternal year, there will be some great $$ Incentives for the Proposer who brings in New Members. Usually it is $35 for each new member. However that will change in the coming months. Keep watching for the changes.
In order to claim the monthly Incentive, the Proposer needs to email to me mcfreil2019@gmail.com The name and Membership number of the New Member & the Proposer’s home address, so that I can get the check mailed to you. Each month is different. Sometimes we limit it to the First 10 Proposers who sign up a new member, so keep checking the monthly flyer.
MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM AWARD POINTS
There are about 20 different Councils from throughout the State that have submitted Membership Programs and are seeking Points. Those 20+ need to go back in the program that has been REVIEWED and not awarded, and send back the information requested, and I will reward Your Council with Points. I WANT EVERY COUNCIL TO MAX OUT IN MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM Points. I will give the points, but please supply the information requested by me and resubmit the report AGAIN. I check the website Membership Program every 2 days. I WANT TO GIVE YOU POINTS, just submit the pertinent information.
IF YOU DO NOT ASK MEN TO JOIN, THEY WILL NOT.
Ask men of your Parishes to JOIN US. Have them go to kofc.org, click on the JOIN US gold banner and have them fill out the brief form. Good Luck, I am hoping that every Council in OHIO becomes STAR Council.

EUCHARISTIC REVIVAL
Why do we need a Eucharistic Revival?
Over the past couple of years, our diocese has participated in two major initiatives, the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) Survey and the Synod on Synodality. These initiatives have invited all Catholics to participate and share their thoughts about their experiences of Church. The feedback that we have received from nearly 40,000 people supports the need for a Eucharistic Revival in our diocese.
According to the DMI survey, the majority of respondents (87% / 86%) believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, attend Mass and participate in individual prayer time on a weekly or daily basis. Half are also involved in practicing Catholic devotions at least once a month (e.g. rosary, novenas, feast days, etc.) More than half of respondents, however, did not feel prepared to have conversations about their personal faith story, church teachings or the story of Jesus with family and friends. Another significant finding was that 75% of respondents stated they have never participated in a retreat.
In addition, one of the top ten priorities from the diocesan synodal process was participation in the Liturgy. Some of the emerging actions identified, include:
• increasing adult faith formation opportunities, especially formation on the Liturgy and liturgical practices
• equipping missionary disciples to spread the Good News and be witnesses of God's love
• rebuilding a sense of community in our parishes post-pandemic
• reaching out to those who have distanced themselves or no longer feel included in the Church
• strengthening spiritual life through Adoration, devotions, and retreat experiences
These findings show there is fertile ground for the Eucharistic Revival in our diocese.
Please share the good news of your Council’s activity with the Diocesan Eucharistic Revival Team. You may email me at Gregory Coogan, gcoogan@dioceseofcleveland.org.
