MCGIVNEY RELIC AT WORLD YOUTH DAY Agroup of eight U.S. college Knights traveled in early August to World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal, accompanied by administrators from the Order’s College Council program. While taking part in the many WYD events, the college Knights made available for veneration a firstclass bone relic of Blessed Michael McGivney to fellow pilgrims from many parts of the world. Among them were Knights from several councils in Mexico South, traveling with a delegation from the Archdiocese of Yucatán. “So many people were stopping us to venerate the relic and wanted to know more about Father McGivney,” said Matthew Salomons, a past grand knight at Providence College who
August 6, feast of the Transfiguration, with an open-air Mass by Pope Francis, who said in his homily, “To all of you, dear young people, who are the present and the future, yes, to all of you, Jesus now says: ‘Have no fear,’ ‘Do not be afraid!’”
serves as coordinator of College Councils. In addition, Bishop Frank Caggiano of Bridgeport, Conn., and Bishop Gary Janak of San Antonio, Texas, each placed the relic on the altar during separate Masses with WYD pilgrims.
Mindful of the fact a second miracle is needed for Father McGivney to advance to sainthood, the Guild continues to ask all members to pray to this Blessed servant of God and to spread knowledge of and devotion to him in your parishes and Knights of Columbus councils. Please report any favors received to the Father McGivney Guild (guild@kofc.org).

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen
HIS VISION, YOUR MISSION You can play a key role in advancing Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you! The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild publishes a quarterly newsletter and offers a weekly Mass for the intentions of members.

NOVEMBER 2023
MONTHLY REFLECTION The entire month of November falls during the liturgical season known as Tempus per Annum or Ordinary Time (formerly Time After Pentecost), which is represented by the liturgical color green. Green is a symbol of hope, as it is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. The liturgical color green is worn during the praying of Offices and celebration of Masses of Ordinary Time. The last portion of the liturgical year represents the time of our pilgrimage to heaven during which we hope for reward. During November, as in all of Ordinary Time (Time After Pentecost), the Liturgy signifies and expresses the regenerated life from the coming of the Holy Spirit, which is to be spent on the model of Christ's Life and under the direction of His Spirit. As we come to the end of the Church year we are asked to consider the end times, our own as well as the world's. The culmination of the liturgical year is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. "This feast asserts the supreme authority of Christ over human beings and their institutions.... Beyond it we see Advent dawning with its perspective of the Lord's coming in glory."— The Liturgy and Time, A.G. Mortimort Thanksgiving (Francis X. Weiser) The tradition of eating goose as part of the Martin's Day celebration was kept in Holland even after the Reformation. It was there that the Pilgrims who sailed to the New World in 1620 became familiar with this ancient harvest festival. When, after one year in America, they decided to celebrate a three days' thanksgiving in the autumn of 1621, they went in search of geese for their feast. We know that they also had deer (a present from the Indians), lobsters, oysters, and fish. But Edward Winslow, in his account of the feast, only mentions that "Governor Bradford sent four men on fowling that so we might after a more special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruit of our labours." They actually did find some wild geese, and a number of wild turkeys and ducks as well. After 1789 the celebration reverted to local and regional observance for almost a hundred years. There grew, however, a strong desire among the majority of the people for a national Thanksgiving Day that would unite all Americans in a festival of gratitude and public acknowledgment for all the blessings God had conferred upon the nation. It was not until October 3, 1863, that this was accomplished, when President Abraham Lincoln issued, in the midst of the Civil War, a Thanksgiving Proclamation. In it the last Thursday of November was set apart for that purpose and made a national holiday. Since then, every president has followed Lincoln's example, and annually proclaims as a "Day of Thanksgiving" the fourth Thursday in November. Only President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the date, in 1939, from the fourth to the third Thursday of November (to extend the time of Christmas sales). This caused so much consternation and protest that in 1941 the traditional date was restored."
The month of November is dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory whose feast is celebrated on November 2.
The Holy Father's Intentions for the Month of November 2023 For the Pope: We pray for the Holy Father; as he fulfils his mission, may he continue to accompany the flock entrusted to him, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

STATE OFFICER REPORT Another month has come and gone and we find ourselves a third of the way through the fraternal year. By now, your councils should be working your programs, helping your members and their families grow in our faith, and have a little fun along the way. I am always proud of the great activities and how strong our faith is here in Ohio and, especially, here in the Cleveland Diocese.

GROWTH
NORTH COAST NAVIGATOR
NOVEMBER 2023
GROWTH REPORT Growth in the state of Ohio has been doing good over the first four months of the fraternal year. The state is currently at 28% with 518 new brothers as of October 27, 2023. The Cleveland Diocese is doing its part to help with 86 new brothers and at 26% of our target of 337. The state growth is just under 1% whereas Cleveland is just over. Cleveland remains in second place behind Columbus who continues to do a fantastic job. I am confident that Cleveland will give them a run for the crown again this year. Cleveland continues to lead the state in live Exemplifications of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. For the first quarter of the fraternal year, there was an incentive to form an Exemplification Team and present. The incentive was for a gift card for your council. The following councils have been entered into the drawing: 310, 774, 3213, 3304, 3410, 3970, 4847, 8320, 10936, and 15901. I will contact the winners. We are doing another set for October, November, and December. So, get your teams together, schedule, and present an Exemplification. eMembership continues to play a key role for the state and our diocese. As of October 27, 2023, approximately 30% of the eMembers have been transferred into a council. That is a little lower than the past couple of years, but we will continue to do our best. Make sure that your councils follow the procedure sent to you on each email from Mike Incorvati, Diocesan Growth Director. If there are any questions, please ask. We are here to help. November Bulletin Blurb November is a month to be thankful for everything that we have in our lives. The Knights of Columbus can provide you a lifelong brotherhood and friendship that you will forever be thankful for! Want to become a part of that? Join us today by going to kofcohio.org and click on Join Us. For more information, contact Grand Knight (name here). Finally, 47% of our active councils have recruited. We know that it is challenging but always look for those opportunities where you can bring a man closer to Christ. Share with him, and his family, what the Knights have done for you and your family.

DISTRICT DEPUTY NOTES I would like to thank you for attending this past Sunday's first quarter Diocesan District Deputy Meeting. It was nice to see everyone and hear how your Councils are doing. As stated previously, DD visitations look great, continue to advise and support your Councils when necessary. State really appreciates these reports as this is the only way State knows what is happening at the Councils. Although leading the State in State Program entries, as a Diocese we still have 34 Councils who have NOT entered a program. Please encourage your Councils to utilize the online form and remind them ANY one may enter a program and the form is mobile phone friendly. As promised, the Council should be awarded at the end of the year once the State sends out a completed SP-7 to the Council Grand Knight or Program Director.

STATE GENERAL PROGRAM It seems like yesterday we were on tour getting ready for the new Fraternal year. It’s hard to believe that we have finished the first four months. During these four months councils have been busy doing programs and asking questions on reporting. This year we have moved away from the 10784 Supreme reporting form to using just the state website. The use of the 10784 is only for submitting the Family of the Month and any Supreme feature program. This form is not mandatory for council use. This move was made to make easier reporting for councils and to follow the progress of your council. Many of the questions I am getting is do we need to follow in detail the Faith in Action program. The simple answer to this question is no. The Faith in Action program is a guide for your programs. Creativity in reporting your programs to fit into the various Faith in Action guidelines. Let’s look at a couple of examples. The first example is one that consisted of a Rosary March and Holy Hour. If your council participated in this, you would have two choices of how to report it. One under Faith as a Rosary or under Faith as a holy Hour. Depending on the program you needed is how to report it. Let take another example under Community Helping Hands. I will use my council as an example. We held a golf outing to raise monies for a community member who needed help. We could have entered tis as council choice or Helping Hands. Since we had used our council choice for a community picnic and installation of Officers, we chose Helping Hands to enter this under. The other questions are about points and how they are given. Each council must complete 4 Faith in Action programs in each of the categories: Faith, Community, Family and Life and one council choice in each of the four areas. Also, you must complete Growth. Read the program manual as well as the growth manual for the complete explanation of the programs. COR INITATIVE Why COR? The Knights of Columbus empowers Catholic men to live their faith and serve their family, parish, community, and country. Why? Because families need strong husbands and fathers, and the world needs courageous witnesses to Jesus Christ. Through Cor, men will be formed and sharpened as disciples of Jesus, who are committed to serving him and willing to boldly live and share their faith. It is the mandate of every Catholic man to bring Jesus to a broken world. To live his faith and engage in this mission, every Catholic man needs a strong relationship with God that is rooted in prayer and the sacraments. Catholic men need to proactively invest in their on-going faith formation, to be a part of a dynamic brotherhood that supports, sharpens, and strengthens them to be holy men, husbands, and fathers, and to engage in the mission of the Church. The mission of Cor is to refocus Catholic men on Jesus Christ and to form and strengthen them in faith and virtue through a brotherhood committed to prayer, formation, and fraternity. The goal of each Cor gathering is to provide the opportunity for men to encounter Christ, to pray together, to be formed in their faith, and to strengthen their bonds of brotherhood, preparing them for courageous leadership and the mission of evangelization for their families and communities.
How to Run COR? This general structure is meant to provide a simple framework for the leadership to fill with appropriate content according to what is previously planned and shared with the pastor/chaplain. Each gathering must have a designated leader to manage the content flow and timing. Setup
Considering hospitality, if any materials or books are needed for prayer, formation, or fraternity, either provide them or communicate in advance. Ensure that the space is set up to match your predetermined content.
Welcome & Opening Prayer
Open with a prayer, even if starting with food and social fraternal time. Clergy should be asked to lead the prayer, if present. The opening prayer alone does not satisfy the required “prayer” element.
Introduce Theme or Focus
Make any needed introductions or announcements such as the focus or theme. Use this as an opportunity to transition into the main content or focus for this specific gathering.
Cor Content
Begin the predetermined content structure, either emphasizing the key elements equally or with a specified emphasis. Formation and fraternity usu-ally occur first, concluding. The examples provided above have the content arranged with formation and fraternity occurring first and ending with prayer. If utilizing Into the Breach or another Catholic Information Service resource such as the Cor Ecclesiae series, here is where it fits.
Wrap Up
Always end on time. This honors everyone’s time. Recap any action items, reminder for next Cor, and invite to any upcoming council and/or parish events.
Closing Prayer
Consider using a consistent prayer and asking for prayer intentions that allows for repetition and familiarity. The closing prayer alone does not satisfy the required “prayer” element.
For more information on the COR initiative, consult Form 11500 which is available on the state website under PUBS&RESOURCES. You can also reach out to Ty Tyjewski at 440-867-4503 or Jim Maslach at 440-785-9838 or via email at kofcjkm@gmail.com.

Topic/Registration Link Council Recovery Program The Council Recovery Program (CRP) provides councils with the knowledge and tools that will allow them to resume normal operations after a time of inactivity. The CRP will show councils how to inspire members and parishioners and to become reengaged with their parish and community. The CRP gives councils a basic framework that can be modified and built upon to fit their local needs. Introducing Families to the Knights Your council’s latest recruitment efforts are complete, and you have some men interested in learning more, especially about how their families are involved. What’s your next step? Invite them to an Open Social or Open House style event. We will share with you how to get men AND their families interested in joining your council by sharing best practices that will allow you to highlight how you can offer something for every member of the family. We’ll show you some proven processes and successful strategies to help grow your council. Grand Knight 201 We will be building on the knowledge gained in Grand Knight 101. We will dive into: • Forms and who should be filling them out…and when. • An overview of council cash flow and the Grand Knight's role. • Advertising and marketing and how they increase the impact and growth of your council. • Finally, protocol and how it helps the success of your council. Council Admissions Committee During council meetings when the Grand Knight asks for Balloting of Candidates for admission, have you ever wondered what it means? Does your council have an admissions committee? During this session we will aim to unpack the role and function of the admissions committee and shed light on the “Balloting of Candidates for admission” process. By sharing current resources and highlighting best practices, we will demonstrate the connection between the work of the admissions committee and the retention efforts of the council.

SCHOLARSHIP The Ohio Charity Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that, for the 2023-2024 school year, numerous $1,000 scholarships will once again be made available for Ohio Catholic students (grades nine through twelve) attending Catholic High Schools in Ohio. This is the twenty-seventh consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus Scholarships have been awarded to our outstanding Catholic High School students. More than $850,000 has been awarded during that period. The requirements that will be considered for this scholarship are the student’s and family’s financial need, a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher, academic awards, community and/or parish involvement, and extracurricular activities. Preference may be given to students who are sons or daughters of a Knight of Columbus member in good standing; or a son or daughter of a deceased member. We have a particular desire to help students, who may be considering a religious vocation, stay in a Catholic High School to foster and encourage that calling. No more than one Foundation scholarship per Catholic High School will be awarded. We had 2 winners from the Youngstown Diocese last year. One was awarded to a student at Ursuline High School and the other to a student at Canton Central Catholic. Scholarships from other donations and private sources may also be made available. Did a deserving student in your high school receive one? Please encourage every student who fits the qualifications to apply for the Knights of Columbus Scholarship. Important Rules: • Must be a practicing Catholic. • Must be attending an Ohio Catholic High School. • No more than one winner per school. • Must include latest grade transcript. • Application Deadline - Friday, November 24, 2023. • Do not request a mail delivery receipt. For more information on high school scholarships available through the Ohio State Council and Ohio Charity Foundation, visit www.ohiocharityfoundation.org. Scholarship Donations A $20,000 donation or bequest investment may provide an annual $1,000 scholarship to the school of your choice in your name. If you are over 70½, you can make a tax-free contribution (Qualified Charitable Distribution) from an IRA. Contact Robert F. Collins, Jr., Scholarship Chair, at kofc.ocf.scholarships@gmail.com for more information. College Scholarships The Knights of Columbus has been helping young people obtain this freedom since our founding. During the past year, the Supreme Council provided nearly $1 million in scholarships to students attending colleges, universities, and seminaries. Learn more about what is offered and how to apply. Supreme Council provides scholarships for those individuals entering college. An eligible candidate for these scholarships is a KofC member in good standing, a child of the member or of deceased member who was in good standing. Scholarship candidates should be entering the freshman year in an approved Catholic college in the United States and its territories as a fulltime student in a bachelor’s degree program. KNIGHTS IN ACTION Getting Closer to Election Day As we get closer to election day, the lies continue. How do you protect children by killing them in the womb? Why do we want to allow abortion up to the moment of natural birth? Do you want partial birth abortions to be permitted? What can we do? I urge each one of you to: write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper saying you are against Issue 1; place a VOTE NO sign in your yard; and continue praying for the defeat of this issue. Although supporters of Issue 1 have money and lies on their side, we have truth and prayers. We must use both. The devil wants us to become discouraged and give up. That is his game plan. Prayer can defeat his plan. Do not be discourage by reports that it is passing based upon exit polls, as these are easily manipulated. HB 279: Ohio Transportation Committee Testimony Rudy Breglia, Council 3269
Father Jim Blount, a catholic Priest has stated that the unity prayer will blind the devil for a period of time. If what he has stated is true, we would ask for the Knights in every city across the State of Ohio to say the Unity Prayer on November 7th for their families, their city before they enter their polling place to defeat this Issue 1 and for the intercession of Blessed Father Michael McGivney. Also for those in the Ukraine, Israel, and Palestine. My adorable Jesus, May our feet journey together. May our hands gather in unity. May our hearts beat in unison. May our souls be in harmony. May our thoughts be as one. May our ears listen to the silence together. May our glances profoundly penetrate each other. May our lips pray together to gain mercy from the Eternal Father. Amen
As requested by Ohio Representative Bernard Willis, sponsor of H.B. 279 (Attachment) that provides for lapshoulder seat belts on all school buses within five years of the Bill’s effective date, I provided on October 24th proponent Testimony (See Below) to the Transportation Committee. A general introduction to the Seat Belts in School Buses was given that encouraged the Committee to support the Bill and enhance the safety of school buses by installing lap-shoulder seat belts. The status of Ohio City Councils that support school districts conducting Pilot Programs and school districts that have already purchased school buses with seat belts. In addition, reference was given to the school bus safety experts who presented at the Governor’s School Bus Safety Working Group favored the presence of seat belts in school buses. A number of questions were presented by the Representatives that included Insurance rates dropping with the installation of seat belts; funding for school districts that don’t have sufficient funds for installing seat belts; solvable issues associated with the implementation of a seat belt installation program; cost of contractor bus services with seat belted buses; effect of having seat belts on liability of school districts; and bus driver training and the beneficial effect of seat belts on driver distractions and driver caused crashes.
