A MODEL FOR TODAY The founder of the Knights of Columbus, Father Michael J. McGivney was a central figure in the growth of Catholicism in America, and he remains a model today. His example of charity, evangelization and empowerment of the laity continues to bear fruit and guide Knights of Columbus around the world. In his Apostolic Letter that was read at the Mass for Beatification on Oct. 31, 2020, Pope Francis stated that Blessed Michael McGivney’s “zeal for the proclamation of the Gospel and generous concern for the needs of his brothers and sisters made him an outstanding witness of Christian solidarity and fraternal assistance.” The Holy Father set his annual feast day for Aug. 13, the day between Father McGivney’s birthday (in 1852) and the day he entered eternal life (in 1890). The beatification ceremony in the
Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford, Conn., was a high point in a long process that began with the opening of the Cause for Canonization in December 1997. Shortly after Father McGivney was named a Venerable Servant of God in March 2008, Pope Benedict XVI cited him as a key figure in “the impressive growth” of the Church in the United States, stating, “We need but think of the remarkable accomplishment of that exemplary American priest, the Venerable Michael McGivney, whose vision and zeal led to the establishment of the Knights of Columbus.” Through the spiritual genius of Father McGivney, the Knights of Columbus has become a way for Catholic men to transform friends into brothers — brothers who care for one another.
Pope Francis approved a decree for a miracle attributed to his intercession, opening the way for Father McGivney to be beatified. A second approved miracle is needed for him to be canonized as a saint of the Catholic Church. Those who knew him best in life saw in him both a “genial” countenance and a man with an “indomitable will” to achieve the good. In sum, his founding of the Knights of Columbus “attests to the love in which he held his brother man.” In these pages, you will get to know Father McGivney better, and join us in praying for his intercession as well as his canonization. You also can read accounts by contemporaries of Father McGivney about his life, works and virtues.

MONTHLY REFLECTION The first two days of December fall during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time and is represented by the liturgical color green. The next 22 days fall during the liturgical season of Advent and are represented by the liturgical color purple—a symbol of penance, mortification and the sorrow of a contrite heart. The remaining days of December mark the beginning of the Christmas season. The liturgical color changes to white or gold — a symbol of joy, purity and innocence.
Highlights of the Month The liturgy of Advent focuses on remembering Christ's first coming at Bethlehem which then directs our mind to Christ's Second Coming at the end of time. The readings focus on the people of the Old Testament awaiting the Messiah, John the Baptist, heralding the way for Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary and her maternal preparations. The Reason for the Season The month of December is filled with expectation and celebration. Preparation is the key word for the first 24 days of December. Everyone is getting ready for Christmas — shopping and decorating, baking and cleaning. Too often, however, we are so busy with the material preparations that we lose sight of the real reason for our activity.

Christmas is a Christian feast — and we must reclaim it as such! In the same way that a family eagerly prepares for a baby, so in Advent should we prepare for the coming of the Christ Child. We should keep Advent as a season of waiting and longing, of conversion and of hope and keep our thoughts on the incredible love and humility of our God in taking on the flesh of the Virgin Mary. Let us not forget to prepare a peaceful place in our hearts wherein our Savior may come to dwell. The best person we can turn to for help during Advent is Mary, Christ's and our Mother. She awaited the day of His birth with more eagerness than any other human being. Her preparation was complete in every respect. Let's crown our preparation and borrow something of Mary's prayerfulness, her purity and whole-hearted submission to God's will.

STATE OFFICER REPORT December is such a busy time of year, and a month that tempts us to lose sight of the profound spiritual importance of the Advent and Christmas seasons. The best way to stay focused on keeping Christ in Christmas is to be good stewards of his presence in our daily lives this Christmas season. Let us reflect on Advent and what it brings to each of us leading us to the promise of the Christmas Season!

December and January. District Deputies will have their district contests in early February with the Diocesan Championship on February 25, 2024 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership. I know that there are a lot of sharp shooters out there in the diocese and we would love to have them come and wear the CLE at the state championship in March. It is never too early to start thinking about State Convention either. The state convention is in May 2024 in Covington, KY. Councils should be looking for delegates. Usually, the Grand Knight and Past Grand Knight are delegates, but councils can have other members. And remember, to get alternates for your two delegates. There will be more information coming out in March, but to be early is to be on time! The Greater Cleveland Chapter is sponsoring Clergy Appreciation Dinner on Friday, January 26, 2024. The cost is $280 per a table. A table seats eight (8) but are estimating that council members will only have five (5) seats. That allows the clergy and/or seminarians to sit at the table. GROWTH REPORT Growth in the dioceses continues to be going strong as we are now up to 119 new members and at 43% of our growth goal. Thank you to all of the councils that are recruiting. Sometimes you get a new member and sometimes you are planting seeds. In either case, your efforts continue to show that the Knights of Columbus are alive here on the North Coast! Cleveland also continues to lead in live, in-person Exemplifications of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity—we even surpassed the state council’s online exemplifications. Presenting the CUF is a lot easier than the old 1, 2, and 3 degrees but the message is just as powerful. Every council should take a look at putting together a live, in-person Exemplification team and schedule Exemps even if you have no candidates. You can recruit to the Exemp and not wait. Speaking of the online Exemplifications, the state online Exemplifications will be held on Wednesdays through the end of December. After that, the Exemplifications will no longer be available. The Exemps started in March 2020 as a result of COVID and have helped bring in new, transfer online, or advance members to the 3rd degree for over 500 exemplifications. For the Cleveland Diocese, the online Exemplifications will continue but only once per a month. A schedule has not been determined but will be discussed at the January Mid-Year Meeting. Stay tuned for a schedule. As always, your diocesan team would be more than happy to schedule a live, inperson Exemplification at your council. DISTRICT DEPUTY NOTES Worthy District Deputies, Please find the latest OSC Score Card through 12/2/2023 in your inbox. You will notice, once again, Our Diocese leads the way in exemplifications and even taken the lead away from OSC. The most positive numbers are the number of "new", "E-members" and "Advancing" members via these reported exemplifications. This goes to show, if Councils host a live exemplification, Council Growth will follow. Please continue to emphasize live exemplifications to your Councils AND get them to report if it has already occurred. Although leading (barely) the state in Council Program entries we still have thirty (30) active councils with zero entries. Please continue to emphasize to your Councils to enter at least one program. I am sure they have completed one Program since July 1st. Reminder if you have not done so, please register for the January DD meeting in Columbus as soon as possible, regardless whether you can attend or not. Reminder if you are not able to attend the entire weekend, you should drive down on Saturday to attend the business meeting which runs from 8 AM until 3 PM. Your mileage will be paid by Supreme. Please let me know if you are planning on attending on Friday night or not. Finally: SCB distribution is on February 3rd. Right now, West side will be meeting at St Ladislas; East at Garfield and South at Akron somewhere. Please poll your councils to see where they would like to attend and pick up their tickets. We will be separating and dispatching tickets prior to the event. Although State will ask the Grand Knights directly, it is your responsibility to ensure timely distribution to your Councils.

STATE DISTRICT DEPUTY Become a District Deputy to Grow the Knights of Columbus One of the most important jobs in the Knights of Columbus is the District Deputy. The DD is usually a Past Grand Knight of a council and has shown the leadership qualities to lead a group of men to do good works. He has been in the forefront of bringing new men to the Order and crafting them into the mix with other Knights to help their Church and Community. A District Deputy is a mentor to several councils, including his own. He must be able to be a sounding board for his councils, with advice and constructive criticism, remembering that they make their own decisions on how the council is run. Not all councils are the same and the DD must be able to allow them to do it in their own way if they conduct their business according to the Knights of Columbus and The Official Rules of Conducting Meetings. The DD is the primary link between the local council leadership and the State Council. Communication from the State Council down to the local Knights is critical to growing the Order and bringing men to the to our rosters. The State Council also needs feedback from the local councils which makes the DD position critical to the process as he is the “eyes on the ground” and can help answer questions and solve problems to help everyone involved. We are halfway through the Fraternal Year in Ohio, and we need to look toward the future. We have men across the State that are in their first year of being a DD and others that have spent several years in the position. The State Council is on the lookout for men to help fill the DD positions and to help grow the Order. Are you that man? I urge any man interested in the position of District Deputy to have a conversation with your currant DD or State Officer. Ask what you need to know how to do the job and you just might be surprised how much satisfaction you can get by helping grow the Knights of Columbus. INSURANCE & INVESTMENTS My Brother Knights, As we approach the end of the year and our thoughts turn to the angelic declaration of “Peace on Earth” and “Goodwill to Men!” We remember Pope Francis’ Prayer for Peace where he prays “Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!...Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last…” In our lives there is much going on: scurrying around buying a Christmas tree, getting it decorated; looking for that perfect gift for our spouse, our kids and maybe grandkids. There are parties and school Christmas shows. Seems like we’re busier than ever. But let me ask you to slow down for just a few minutes and consider some financial issues that come up at the end of the calendar year. 1. Because we’re so late in the year, you may have met your individual or family deductible on your health insurance plan. Financially this may be the opportune time for some minor procedure to be scheduled; or that visit to a specialist you may have put off. The same is true about dental insurance and sometimes even for vision coverage. Check with your Human Resource office or your health insurance carrier for details. 2. When it comes to health insurance, do you have a Health Savings Account? Do you have to spend the money that’s in there by year end? Some plans have a “use it or lose it” feature. Do you have to make a decision about how much to contribute next year? These are a couple of time sensitive issues. Again, make sure you check with your HR office or health insurance carrier. 3. If you have earned income for the year, will you contribute to a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or 401k? Are you eligible to contribute more based on the “catch up” provision? Now is the time to start making plans. 4. Speaking of IRAs, have you received your required minimum distribution for this year? If not, the Internal Revenue Service penalty is a hefty 50% of the amount you should have received! All of these issues come with rules and regulations, and each individual situation is different. I’d be happy to discuss them with you. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, let us be thankful for all the graces God has showered on us, especially the gift of his Son, our Savior! Vivat Jesus!

COR INITATIVE Worthy Brother Knights, Here are some brief details regarding COR from Bill Till, Faith Director at Brunswick Council# 4847. There have been a total of 4 sessions and attendance has been as follows: - Session 1 - 8 people - Session 2 - 16 people - Session 3 - 8 people - Session 4 - 6 people I think the men who attend enjoy the time spent focusing on formation, fraternity and prayer. Fraternity is done at the start of the meeting where the men are given a prompt to discuss with the other men for a few minutes. The prompt corresponds to the formation topic we cover. The formation takes a deeper look at different parts of our faith, with a brief overview of the topic and a slide with resources people can use to take a deeper dive into the topic. The response from the attendees has been very positive with comments showing an interest and desire to get into the resources. Prayer, in my opinion, has been the best part of Cor so far. We've taken different types of prayer and really spent a good 15-20 minutes in a unique prayer experience. The men have come away from the prayer experience with positive comments and a greater sense of peace. I have been communicating with DGK Aaron Stratman from the Wadsworth Council, and Worthy District Deputy Tom Donovan to set up a meeting with their Council.
