The Final Quarter

W

ell we’ve entered the nal quarter of the 2020-2021 Fraternal Year and just like like it can be in football this is the make it or break it quarter with regards to membership growth We have twelve councils in the Archdiocese who are lined up to achieve the Star Council Award this year with six others within one new member of reaching that goal. Thank you brother Knights for you outstanding efforts in bringing in new members during this pandemic

H

ere in the Archdiocese we are blessed to have two caucuses for delegates to the Supreme Convention in Denver this coming August. All indications are that the convention is a go, in person, for the lower 48 states. Once I have the list of registered State Convention delegates, I will email them to submit names for delegate (and alternate) to the Supreme Convention. If there is more than one we will have an online election. Last year we only had one per caucus so no election was necessary.

With that said, please make sure you are compliant with the Safe Environment Program (SEP). Log onto the Supreme website and check your status or check the latest Star Council Report form PSD and Special Reports chairman Ken Girt. If you have “timed out” before completing the SEP course, your Financial Secretary can resubmit the council’s Form 365 online to “restart the clock”. Please complete the program as soon as possible. As we get closer to the end of the fraternal year the processing of compliance with the program could get backlogged and not approved in time, so please don’t delay

F

he State Convention is just a little over a month away. Although it will be virtual again this year, we are planning on streaming both the Super Cash Bonanza Ticket Drawing (for all) and the Convention Business Meeting live (for delegates) for this year. If you are going to be a delegate, please register on the State website: KOFCOHIO.ORG and click on the big “State Convention News” button for information and links. Remember, this is an Election Year for State Warden. We have two candidates running for that state of ce: Chris Sarka and Brett Gissel. Both are from the Columbus Diocese. Both the Cincinnati and Dayton chapters will be hosting “meet & greets”.

e are getting close to the rst call for the Super Cash Bonanza. That First Turn-In in due to our State Treasurer Jeff Kiliany on April 15, 2021. You can nd his address and contact information on the last page of the issue. The second turn-in is May 14, 2021. This is a pretty hard date because unlike in the past when you could bring last minute tickets to the convention, this will not really be an option due to it being virtual If you need any additional tickets or posters, please contact me - I still have plenty inally, I would like to thank everyone for all the great work you are doing in your councils throughout the Archdiocese during this extraordinary fraternal year. We are thankful that councils are nally starting to meet again in person, for the upcoming Archdiocesan Marian Pilgrimage, for our new Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly, and for Father McGivney’s beati cation this past fall May all of you and your families have a most blessed Easter and Easter week Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us

Growth

We celebrated the rst day of Spring a fortnight ago, and I write this column during Holy Week, with Easter Sunday upon us in less than a week. We celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord in this wonderful season, a time of rebirth, of new life, and a time of faith. This season is emblematic of who we are as Catholics and who we are as Brother Knights! “Vivat Jesus!” is the watchword that should be on our hearts and tongues, especially during this sacred season The signs of new life are everywhere – in the world around us as the Earth awakens from a long winter – and in our lives as we see signs and hope that this “winter of our discontent” is giving way to a recovery in our communities and our nation. People are beginning to return to workplaces, activities are starting to begin again, parishioners are returning to Masses, and many of our councils are beginning to hold “in person” meetings while practicing safe practices and social distancing. People are getting vaccinated and the COVID numbers seem to be improving As our world slowly begins to come alive, this is the time to be both hopeful and READY! We have spent the last year trying to nd ways to think outside and the box and get new members. Everyone has worked hard to share the gift of brotherhood. While we are not back to “normal” (whatever that may turn out to be), we are beginning to get out more and have more opportunity to recruit members face to face While we cannot get out as much as we would like – there is still much we can do NOW and to prepare for the FUTURE to grow our councils! I urge you and your councils to be ready to hit the ground running and take advantage of every opportunity. I’m including a few ideas here.

• Ways to Promote Membershi o ASK SOMEONE! ▪ o

o

Make literature and membership materials available

Make materials available at Mass entrances and other parish events

Reach out via email, phone, websites, or skywriting

Be ready with an “elevator speech” – that 30 to 60 second speech that shares why YOU are a Knight – the things your council does and what membership gives to you! Share the activities, the camaraderie, the strengthening of faith that membership provides. We are all Membership Directors and Ambassadors of the Knights of Columbus! ▪

o

This is still the best way to get someone to join! Sometimes you have to ask more than once, but never pass up the opportunity to share the gift of Knighthood! Reach out to men (AND their wives) when you see them!

Also remember the “24 Hour Knight” to remind busy people that membership will not be a burden to them

Publicize the e-membership link – and bring new members in quickly

The e-Members are your “low-hanging fruit” – all you need to do is get them to a degree.

o

Reach out to new parishioners and the new Catholics admitted to the faith

o

Reach out to former members and lapsed insurance members

o

Seek approval to use the parish directory to contact possible members.

o

Plan a Membership Driv I know – it’s dif cult to plan when we’re not sure exactly WHAT we can do – but my message is simply to do SOMETHING – YOU know what will best work in your council! Page 2 of 7 .

Supreme Council and your State O cers and Directors are here to help you. Some of the help includes free membership by use of “MCGIVNEY2020”, plus Star Council membership goals have been reduced by 20%, making it even easier for you to make your council a “star”. Addi onally, there are valuable training opportuni es available at www.kofc.org/training-op during April including:

• APRIL 17: DELTA CHURCH DRIVE TRAINING - This is a mely and valuable program to ensure your successful membership outreach! Please avail yourself of this training!

Other training during April includes Council Experience (helping ensure we meet the needs of members), You Are Your Programs (making a council successful), New Council Mee ng Format (be er mee ngs), and COVID Response Training (how to get back to pre-pandemic)

I thank you all for the hard work that I know you’ve been doing – and know it hasn’t been easy. Membership in the Knights of Columbus has been a sacred gi to each of us as well as to our parishes, our families, and our communi es. Your membership team and state o cers are here to help. Please reach out to any of us for assistance – we want you to succeed in sharing the gi of Knighthood! God Bless each of you and your families. Please stay safe. Vivat Jesus! Mike

The Arch - April 2021

On Monday, March 29, 2021, the Knights of Columbus celebrated Founders Day, marking the 139th anniversary of the reception of its charter from the state of Connecticut. Since its founding, the Knights of Columbus has grown to over 2 million members and councils all over the world Blessed Michael McGivney wrote in a letter to the Connecticut priests in April 1882 explaining that he founded the Knights of Columbus, in part, “to unite the men of our Faith … that we may thereby gain strength to aid each other in time of sickness; to provide for decent burial, and to render pecuniary assistance to the families of deceased members. We thank each and every agent in Western Ohio for helping preserve this mission in our own back yard The very early stages of our insurance program required mandatory participation, as you well know. Men joined our Order because of the nancial security it provided to their families. We have evolved quite a bit as an insurance and nancial enterprise over the last 139 years Our initial insurance products, which were limited in scope, were facilitated by our nancial secretaries for many years. In the 1950’s and 60’s we began the slow transition to a career agent distribution system and that’s when things started to accelerate We continue to evolve and adopt the best of industry practices in both our home of ce and in the eld. In essence, we have taken the parts that t us from the larger life insurance world, while maintaining our fraternal structure and mission Our growth has been tremendous and the envy of the industry. We are a Fortune 900 company and one of six of the strongest insurers in North America* – while serving the Catholic market. Just how do we do it

Fraternal Benefits Let me tell you how: we have built and continue to grow our insurance enterprise through our unique Catholic af nity with our members which highlights a shared value proposition. Those shared values include the fundamentals of our Catholic faith. Caring about others. Loving others. Being our brother’s keeper. Believing that all human life is precious – in all stages and phases of life As we evolve into a more sophisticated nancial enterprise, we must always remember that our strength lies is in the values we share with our members and fellow Catholics. Our evolution has been wonderful…and necessary. But my message to you as we re ect on another Founder’s Day is that we will never forget our roots. Our strength is in our fraternal relationship with our members. We don’t want to become commercial reps. We seek to evolve as fraternal agents. We will take the best practices of what our competition does but keep our unique mission at the forefront of all we do Commercial reps work a lifetime trying to develop a niche to specialize in. We have that niche, and ours is the most powerful one of them all: a relationship based on a shared religious and spiritual connection, with products that are in conformity with the USCCB Guidelines for Socially Responsible Investing** As we re ect on another Founder’s Day, we honor our founder with our continued emphasis on the basics that he laid out so clearly for us * Ranking North American Life Insurance Companies from Strongest to Weakest by S&P Global Ratings. April 6, 202 **For more information on USCCB Socially Responsible Investing Guidelines, see an essay on the topic by professor, JOHN S. Bicentennial Marian Pilgrimage Help us celebrate the Bicentennial of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati with the longest Marian Procession in the United States. The Pilgrimage begins Sunday, May 16, 2021 with a Mass at the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Russells Point in the Northern area of the Archdiocese. From there, a small group of pilgrims will begin this historic pilgrimage with a special statue of Our Lady of Fatima, blessed by Archbishop Schnurr for this occasion. The pilgrimage will last for 33 days, making stops at parishes in every deanery of the Archdiocese, and will be highlighted by four cornerstone family events. The pilgrimage will end at the steps of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains on the day of the bicentennial, Saturday, June 19, 2021 where the Archbishop will re-consecrate the Archdiocese to Jesus through Mary.

Longest Marian Pilgrimage in the United States Parish stops in every Deanery • 33 days long • Over 300 miles

Cornerstone Events

• May 16, 2021: Opening Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, Russells Point OH • May 21, 2021: Evening Procession, Holy Hour and Movie Night at the Maria Stein Shrine • May 29, 2021: Family Concert at the Dayton Dragons Stadium • June 19, 2021: Family Concert at Fountain Square, Cincinnati with procession to Cathedral Basilica.

Highlights

• 100,000 copies of 33 Days to Morning Glory distributed to every parish in the Archdiocese. • A dedicated webpage in which the Statue of Mary can be tracked in real time, and Marian prayer resources can be found. • Specially designed prayer cards for the Bicentennial distributed by Pilgrims and host parishes.

The Archdiocese has reached out to us for support of this huge event. I know there are councils who will be present and lending support through manpower. The Knights also have the opportunity to be a sponsor. However, the lowest level of sponsorship begins at $2,500. Raising that amount of money diocese-wide is a daunting task as we are still feeling the nancial pinch from the pandemic. My hope is that councils located at and around the pilgrimage stops will be able to make their presence known supporting the event. —MJF On Facebook: ArchCincyKofC fi
