Wrap Up and Kickoff Edition 2020-2021! If you’re like me, you’re ready to put the second half of last fraternal year behind you - way behind. Overall the Archdiocese brought in 367 new members during 2019-2020 and in spite of the pandemic, we were able to bring in more new members in June of 2020 (31) than we did in 2019 (22). Later in this issue you’ll find more information on how we did…and for all that work, I thank you!

Hitting the Ground Running: The Supreme Council has made some huge changes to the qualifications for Star Council during the 2020-2021 fraternal year. First off, for the McGivney Award, council membership quotas have been lowered and the maximum required is now at 20 members. This is great news to large councils in mature parishes where reaching the old 35 member goal seemed impossible.

• 5% NET GROWTH IN MEMBERSHIP - Reduced from 7% • MINIMUM 3 – MAXIMUM 20 - Reduced from 4 - 35

Credits, four each in the four program categories: Faith, Family, Community and Life. Supreme has also

removed the “Required Programs” and added are more “Featured Programs” (note that the Leave No Neighbor Behind program is for this fraternal year only).

Supreme has also re-written the benefits (insurance) requirements for the Founders Award. Starting now councils are only required to host two (2) Fraternal Benefits Nights per fraternal year. These are run by our field agents and can be open to member’s families • HOST, PROMOTE TWO FRATERNAL BENEFIT SEMINARS - REMOVED QUOTA OF 2.5% AND MIN 3 – MAX 18 - NO ATTENDEE MINIMUM BUT SEMINAR MUST BE PROMOTED - CAN DO JOINT SEMINARS WITH OTHER COUNCILS and prospective members. The only requirement is that total attendance is reasonable. Also, councils can get together and co-host an event. Keys to the Fraternal Benefit Seminars:

• In-Person or Digital Meetings

• Councils “Hosted” and Promoted to their Members

• Agents will use a Prepared and Approved Presentation

• Council Participation is Reported by Agents

• Promotes Member Benefits and Engagement

Also for this fraternal year there is a change to the Faith in Action program for the Columbian Award. To obtain this award you must earn sixteen Program

So to earn the Star Council Award you must achieve:

McGivney Award (Membership)

Founders Award (Insurance)

Columbian Award (Programs)

Submitted Required Forms

- #365 (Program Personnel)

- #1728 (Fraternal Survey)

• Be in Good Standing with Supreme Council

• Safe Environment Compliant (SEP)

Gree$ngs to my Brother Knights and to your families! I hope you and your families are healthy and well. Welcome to the new 2020/2021 Fraternal Year of the Knights of Columbus! As I began wri$ng this column, I was trying to think of a quote befiJng the end of last year and the start of this year. If I were a pessimist, I might quote Dickens and say, “it was the best of ,mes, it was the worst of ,mes”. On further considera$on, that quote would be flat wrong. We were well on the way for Ohio to achieve “Circle of Honor” before suffering through the COVID-19 crisis which placed serious obstacles in the path of our na$on, our Order, and our individual lives. However, as an organiza$on we faced those obstacles head on - with prayer, with cau$ous planning, and with reason. It truly amazed me was how quickly and adeptly we learned to pivot and respond. Councils reached out to members, families, parishes, and communi$es to help – and learned to apply technology for business as well as membership. We should all be very proud of our efforts and our Order! The real quote is from Shakespeare – “What’s past is prologue”. We now begin a new fraternal year with a clean slate but also the opportunity to apply what we’ve learned to ensure that this year is a successful one. As State Advocate Felerski told me last week “we need to hit the ground running!” LET US BEGIN NOW! What can you do to ensure a successful year? I look at this as a four-step process: •

ORGANIZE AND STRATEGIZE o

Create a Membership Plan: As I’ve men$oned in prior columns there a number of things to reach out to new members including: telephoning/emailing parish members from the directory (with approval); contac$ng current members for leads and prior members to ask to “re-up”; providing membership materials and contact info, adver$se in the bulle$n

o

Appoint the right people to the important posi$ons such as Membership and Reten$on

o

Set membership goals

o

Educate membership on why we need to recruit

o

Train members HOW to recruit

o

Be the organiza$on that helps bring men back to the Church!

COMMUNICATE: o

WHO: Appoint someone to lead council communica$ons

o

WHAT: Reach out through newslecers, emails, adver$sing, social media, and other avenues – “get the word out”

o

WHEN and WHERE: NOW – and EVERYWHERE. Don’t lose a day!

o

WHY: Most importantly – be able to answer the “Why Should I Join?” ques$on that prospects might ask. Be ready to ▪

Share how the K of C makes men BETTER Catholics, parents, neighbors, workers, husbands, friends

Share how the Knights of Columbus is about Fraternity and Support of your priests and bishops, your parish, your community

Point out that our churches and our communi$es need them NOW (If not us, then who? If not now, when?)

Share the good we do locally, na$onally, and worldwide through our programs

Fraternal Benefits NEVER INVEST IN AN ANNUITY!! You’ve no doubt seen this kind of headline in the financial pages or you’ve seen pop-up ads on your computer or you’ve heard some friend repeat what he’s heard from his buddy’s uncle. Are they serious?

Let’s start with the basics: An annuity is a tax-favored savings instrument. The government gives it special tax treatment because it’s designed for retirement income. An annuity can be qualified or in other words, funded with money that you have not yet paid taxes on, like an IRA or an RRSP in Canada. Or non-qualified, that is, funded with money you’ve already paid the tax on. Like money you take from your paycheck or out of your savings account. Either way, the tax on the growth in your Knights of Columbus annuity each year is deferred…you pay no current tax on it and pay only when you withdraw money.

I’ll tell you that I think an annuity is a is a great product in the right situation. Especially a Knights of Columbus annuity. In addition to tax deferred growth, here are a few more reasons why I think that way:

1. Your minimum interest rate is guaranteed…for life! There is a floor that the interest rate will never drop below. The good news is that we’ve always paid a higher current interest rate than the guarantee. This feature means nobody has ever lost a dime in a Knights of Columbus annuity…and never will!

2. Your principal is guaranteed by the Knights. Now that kind of guarantee is only as good as the company backing it…and we’ve had 40+ years of Superior ratings from A. M. Best for financial strength. (As of January 2019, rated A+ Superior by A. M. Best)

3. You are charged no administrative fees each year…100% of your money goes to work for you earning interest from day one.

4. Even though annuities are designed for long-term growth, after one year you can access 10% of the value without any KofC penalty.

5. Owners of annuities name a beneficiary; this means that at death, the proceeds bypass probate. This saves time and usually money, too.

6. You can enjoy an income that you (and if you wish, your wife) can never outline!

But let’s be fair; an annuity is not the answer every time. It’s not a short-term product. It’s not designed to be a “put and take” account where you stick some money in and then take it out a short time later. There is a reducing early withdrawal penalty over the first seven years if you take out more than the 10% free withdrawal. That feature, in all annuities, not just the KofC, is to encourage people to leave the money alone until retirement age.

So, although there are situations where an annuity is not the proper product, there are many where it is…And we haven’t even talked about triple compounding, protection from creditors and other features.

How do you know if an annuity is right for you? Meet with my team and let’s look at your goals. It might be the perfect fit.

Where do you keep your safe money?

Vivat Jesus!
