The Race is On to Circle of Honor! 2020
45 Days and only One Growth Goal:
- 264 New Members by the end of this Fraternal Year!
- A new incentive announced: $20 per new member on the roster by June 30th 2020.
- If, as a state we reach 300 or more, that will jump up to $30 per new member!
All month long the State and Supreme councils will be hosting the online Exemplification of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. The officers of the State Council will even help you to host your own online exemplification.
With the Supreme offices being closed and US mail is not reaching the new member information processors at supreme in a timely manner, make sure to Email your new member Form 100 using form100@KoFCOhio.org
Financial Secretaries can also take advantage of the new online Form 100 available through Member Management.
Our Worthy State Deputy Bob Byers said that reaching Circle of Honor is not for him, but for THE PRIDE OF OHIO! And especially here in the ARCHdiocese of Cincinnati, we are extremely proud of the great things we our doing in our communities and now is a great time to not only grow your councils and our Order, but it is also an excellent time in our history to achieve Star Council.
According to the latest report, we have 28 councils who have achieved their new (reduced) membership quota from Supreme. But don’t stop there because your council reached their goal - but instead, take this opportunity to earn Double or even Triple Star Council! Brothers, WE CAN DO THIS, as a matter of fact, here in The Arch we can accomplish anything when we put our minds to it we’ve all seen it happen!
The second part of achieving Star Council status is earning the Founders Award for Fraternal Benefits. Make sure to check out Reaching for Star - Obtaining Founders Award Now Easier! in this issue of The Arch.

Growth
THE FINAL STRETCH Dan Warnock, Arch South Growth Director
Brother Knights,
We are in the final stretch of recruiting new members retainment of old members for Fraternal year ’19-’20. The pandemic be damned we will continue our efforts of recruitment these last 30 days until the end of June to bring new members in.
I know this month many of our sons/grandsons have recently graduated from high school. Have you had that talk with them about joining the knights? What about now with our parishes having reopened. Will your pastor allow you to set up for that March Church Drive that many councils had to forego?
If your council is in the southern region of the Arch council Grand Knights received a phone call from me on May 21st asking you about your awareness of the $20 incentive per new member brought in until June 30th. I asked of your awareness of the available online Exemplifications that both State and Supreme Councils hold twice a week every week. At least until this pandemic ends. And lastly I asked if you could give me a number of any candidates you have in the pipe line that will take their degree before June 30th.
I must say it was a pleasure talking with many of you. I heard and I understand your grievances with the hardships of these trying times. The pandemic has not make our quest for new brother knights any easier. With that said I would ask all our council leaders to come up with a plan. Having that last ditch church drive or a phone call drive to potential new candidates.
I can’t do your recruitment for you gents. I never did make much of a cheer leader but here I am, rooting your councils on. As a lad my dear ole dad taught me that BS walks and action talks. The balls in your end of the court brothers. Bring it down the stretch and jam it. I bid you good luck with your final 30 days.
Vivat Jesus!
EXPLORING THE GIFT OF MEMBERSHIP IN OUR ORDER Mike Thomas, Archdiocese Membership Director (Central)
Greetings to my Brother Knights and to your families! I hope that this writing finds each of you and your families to be doing well and in good health. The last few months, with the COVID-19 pandemic have been tiring, tense, frustrating, and costly for all of us as we have tried to do our parts to ensure that of our health and that of our families, friends, neighbors and fellow Knights. In addition, we have all endured the horrific tragedy in Minnesota and the tragic unrest still sweeping our nation as I write this column. The words of the great patriot of the American Revolution, Thomas Paine, who stated “These are the times that try men’s souls”.
In some ways, OUR souls have been tried as well. Our lives have been turned upside down and we have been deprived of much of what probably took for granted. It has been a period of distance, separation, and loss. We have been deprived of access to our friends, our families, our recreational activities, our necessities – be it a favorite meal or be it toilet paper. Some of us have been deprived of much more – our incomes, our health, and even loved ones. And we all – as Catholic gentlemen have been deprived of our spiritual sustenance – the Mass and the Holy Eucharist. In addition, we as Knights have been deprived of a valuable gift – each other. I believe our Order to be a sacred gift and evidently our Church agrees as our founder, Father Michael J. McGivney is one step closer to Sainthood when he soon becomes “Blessed”.

Growth From previous page… Any of you that have heard me speak at K of C functions have probably heard me speak of how membership in the Knights of Columbus has given me the gift of being a better Catholic, a better husband, father, employee, friend, neighbor, and human being. I need not tell you that the gift that the Knights of Columbus gives each of us is the fraternalism that strengthens and emboldens our faith. Our time in isolation and quarantine has undoubtably taught each of us what a gift of fellowship and faith our Order truly is. I know each of you will want to share the gift of membership which another Catholic man.
I have had the privilege recently of speaking to many of the area Grand Knights. It has been deeply encouraging to hear of council efforts to share the gift of membership with others, even with the challenge of being encouraged to “stay at home” and practicing social distancing. In addition, your councils are making plans for the future – planning membership drives and other activities to promote membership and visibility. In many cases, this has been time well spent – to borrow the adage of the fisherman – “When we cannot fish, we make and repair our nets”.
I have good news. It’s fishing season! Our state and our nation are waking up. People are returning to work. Businesses are reopening. Most importantly, our parishes are reopening. We can once again “gather in His Name” and take of the Body and Blood of Christ. We still need to be safe. We still need to practice social distancing. However, there is much we can do to share the gift of membership
•
Work with your pastor to explore options for Membership Drives
•
Get approval to leave membership materials in the church lobby – eliminating the need to distribute handouts. (I can help your councils with materials)
•
Reach out to members about possible candidates and contact them
•
Request permission to contact the new Catholics admitted to the faith.
•
Reach out to former members and lapsed insurance members
•
Seek approval to use the parish directory to contact possible members. (I can help with a phone script)
Getting a man to full membership is easier than ever! Our unified exemplification is available online EVERY TUESDAY and THURSDAY at 7 PM and 10 PM is available through the Supreme website. In addition, state-run exemplifications are available. Also, each new member brings your council twenty dollars! Lastly – as your Archdiocese Membership Director, I am here to help. I have literature and membership materials and advice (some useful). I’d like to visit each council in person when meetings begin again – but in the meantime, please include me on your “virtual” meetings – michaeldthomas@aol.com / 937.219.3576. God Bless each of you and your families. Please stay sate.
And LET’S PUT OUT INTO THE DEEP! (SAFELY) - Vivat Jesus! Mike

Growth DO NOT QUIT NOW! The fraternal year is coming to an end and what a year it has been! The councils were in mid-stride with all their activities and charitable events when the pandemic hit. The councils did not quit and continued with the events as they were able and accomplished much. We should all be proud of our OHIO KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS!
We have one month left to reach our membership numbers. You have already shown you are not quitters so let us all reach out and recruit new members to help our State Deputy achieve Circle of Honor! This honor is not just for the State Deputy, but it is an honor for all Ohio Knights of Columbus members.
Do you remember when you became a Knight and how excited you were? Share that experience with other men you know. Ask your sons, brothers, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends to share in the excitement of being a Knights of Columbus.
The online exemplification an easy way to join. For those who feel like they don’t have the time to go through the initiation, three degrees can be completed in half an hour!
Happy Recruiting!!

DON’T JUST THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX - THROW THE BOX OUT! With the fraternal year coming to an end, there are various ways to bring new members in to your council and our Order.
Start by reaching out to the newest members of the church who just came through your local parish’s RCIA program. Provide them with a letter of Welcome and an invitation to find out more about our Order and your council.
Box old o’ sam idea s e
If you are not able to get a candidate to attend an online degree or would like to wait until they can take a “live” degree, you can always have them sign up online as an eMember so that they can start receiving the benefits of being a Knight.
Keep in mind that an eMember joining now counts toward the State’s Circle of Honor Goal this fraternal year and then will count toward your Growth (membership) Goal once he transfers into your council which be in the next fraternal year (after June 30th).
The online Exemplification of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity will continue through the entire month of June. Live “virtual” Exemplifications are held on Tuesday and Friday nights by various teams around the State. Contact State Warden Jim Maslach for more information. The Supreme Council also offers the video Exemplification on Thursday evenings.

An appeal from Past State Deputy and favorite Arch son, Dave Helmstetter
Growth
Brother Knights,
It's been quite a fraternal year with the pandemic sending our lives in all sorts of different directions. Many of our K of C activities have been cancelled or postponed. But I am amazed at despite all of our problems that many councils really stepped up in their parishes and communities organizing food drives, donating blood and providing community meals. We should be proud to call ourselves Knights of Columbus.
I am writing this email as a personal appeal on behalf of my good friend, State Deputy Bob Byers. When I was State Deputy, Bob was the State Warden and an extremely valuable member on the state team. It's hard for me to share how much I have appreciated his efforts and friendship over the last couple of decades.
Right now, he stands just short of his membership goal provided by the Supreme Council with a month remaining in the fraternal year. Yes, it's a modified number because of the pandemic but nonetheless to make this goal and have Ohio achieve Circle of Honor under Bob's leadership would be an incredible accomplishment.
The Knights in the northern part of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati need to do our part in helping Ohio and Bob reach this goal. I know many of you are hesitant because of the online exemplifications but it's what we have available today, without question the wave of the future, and I encourage you to use it. To reach younger Catholic men, it's a great way and so easy. Here's Dave's steps to signing a new member:
1. Talk with your candidate about the benefits of the Knights, what your council DOES, and have him complete a Form 100.
2. Approve membership with your council leadership SOMEHOW, phone calls with officers, virtual meeting, emails, etc.
3. Provide him with the Ohio State Council link: https://kofcohio.org/exemplification-registration/ or with the attached online Exemps provided by Supreme Council. Encourage him to watch the ceremony with his wife or family. He will need to know his council number and complete the registration form. Ohio State Council does their ceremonies on Tuesday and Fridays at 7 p.m. Supreme Council dates and times are listed in the accompanying PDF. Text or call him to see when he's watched the Exemp.
4. Then send the Form 100 to Supreme and the State Council the same way you always have done.
I ask that you share this email with your fellow Knights especially those in leadership positions. I don't have everyone's emails in District 1 and 2 but I would hope Vern and Ben would share this information to their email chains. As always, I am confident that the Knights in the "North" will deliver a positive effort over the final 30 days of this fraternal year.
May God bless all of you!
Fraternally,
Dave H.

Fraternal Benefits The world is slowly beginning its return to the way things were - at least as much as it can. It’ll likely be months before we know what normal looks like now.
You’ve probably heard the saying attributed to an unsavory historical figure that “there are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happens.”
It certainly feels that way now. We have crammed decades of changes into these last several weeks, and it’s hard to know what changes are permanent, and what changes will prove temporary.
Not everything is fluid though. I am struck by the resilience of the permanent things - our faith, our fraternity, our families. I’m sure you’ve seen the tremendous ways in which the Knights of Columbus in particular has proven itself equal yet again to this current challenge. Whether it was the establishment of the Leave No Neighbor Behind Initiative, or the launch of the diocesan loan fund, or just the every-day, every-city response of councils across the globe, we have responded as we always do: swiftly, powerfully.
Sure we’ve had to cancel some things. We’ve had to have some virtual meetings. We’ve had to stay a safe distance apart. But our distance hasn’t diminished our unity, nor has it changed our impact.
I continue to be proud to be a part of this great organization - especially in moments like this. And I know you are too.
That’s why, for me, being financially committed to the Knights is such a point of pride. We all need life protection for the future. We all need to plan for retirement. We all need to think about and prepare for life’s what-ifs.
But when it comes time to decide who to make those preparations with, and who to choose to buy those products from, we can choose to spend our money with the company who establishes a multi-million dollar loan funds for Catholic dioceses in their most desperate time of need, or we can go another route. We can choose to protect our financial future with an organization that leaves no neighbor behind, or a company who has no real concept of who their neighbor is. We can prepare for our retirement with a company whose members are - once again - setting an example of true Christian charity for all to follow, or we can go in a different direction.
I would challenge you, whether you’ve never inquired or it has been a long time - to take a fresh look at the Knights of Columbus as a trusted financial partner, and see what products and services we may have that might help you and your family. As we all start to get back to things, we can meet with you in person or by video, whichever you prefer, and we can have stress-free, no-commitment conversation about the possibilities.
It’s a way to further your commitment to all that we stand for, and - at the same time - obtain some muchneeded peace of mind in times like these.
Give us a call at 1-800-484-0304.

Fraternal Benefits Reaching for Star - Obtaining Founders Award Now Easier! Have you ever thought that there was no way you could obtain Star Council because you just couldn’t reach your Benefits (insurance) Quota for the Founders Award? Well the Supreme Council along with the General and Agents have an easier way to help you with that this fraternal year!
You can obtain the Founders award by either reaching 50% of this fraternal year’s Insurance Quota for your council, OR by hosting a benefits seminar either in person (social distancing not withstanding) or via Webinar. And you know what the best part is, The Western Ohio Agency is holding weekly webinars you can attend!
Here are the specifics:
• • • • •
Every council must promote the seminar to members.
Take every effort to make it a significant event (live or online) 10-100 brother Knights.
Multiple councils get credit for combined seminar - if all have attendees.
It cannot be just FA and GK attending
The GA must report satisfactory completion to Supreme for council credit.
The webinars last only about an hour and cover financial planning, changes in the benefits program and offerings available to Knights and their families. The webinar is hosted by State Advocate Michael Felerski and features General Agent Jason Staas as the keynote speaker. There are also Q&A opportunities.
If the Founders Award has always been elusive for your council, this is a greatest opportunity in recent history to achieve it and meet your agents while reaching for Star!
The Arch Fraternal Benefit Webinar Dates: Thursday June 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th.
All beginning promptly at 7:00 PM
Access to each will use the same link: https://kofcagents.webex.com/kofcagents/j.php?MTID=md1141e03fd9fb737d8d6f0ab28af0023
As an added bonus for next fraternal year, every council who achieves Star Council this fraternal year will receive a credit for their 2020-21 SUPREME PER CAPITA $$$
