1. Introduction We will work photography in this project and we will talk about the differents ways to interpret photographs and what photographs makes us feel, because it gives us a lot of knowledge about photography. 2.
Formal analysis of the photograph a. Observation Skills i. Action In this picture we see a girl and an elephant that are looking at each other. We think that the subject of this photo is the love which is transmitted. The background of the photo is dark, and in the foreground we can see a girl with an elephant in the water. We think that the photograph was taken at this time, because the clothes can be used now and the seppia effect too. ii.
Theme The respect and the love between people and animals.
iii.
Characters The photo was taken in a river and it is in sepia. The girl is blonde, she has white skin and in the photo she is sad. The elephant is big and she is hugging him. The elephant is old. The girl is wearing a braid and a long white dress . They are standing, they are calm. They aren’t motivated. The expression of the girl is of emotion, sadness, love. I think that the girl is feeling love and sadness, because she isn’t smiling.
b. Technical Knowledge i.
Photographer’s point of view The photographer was crouching, he took the photograph by the characters side because he wants that we look at their expressions.
ii.
Lighting The lighting is natural and contrasty. The photograph is dark and it is a sad colour. iii.
Framing & Cropping We think that outside of the frame there are more people, and they are swimming in the lake. There are also animals and they are drinking in the lake. We think that by focusing the photograph in the center what the photographer wants is that we don’t look at anything else but the elephant and the girl. c. Context We think that this photograph could be used for any magazine or maybe for some exhibition. The photographer wanted to take this photo because it seemed to him beautiful and cute. We don’t know the time or the period when this photo was taken, but we think it was taken at this time because the effect of the photography is current, it is in “sepia” colour. 3. Gregory Colbert’s Biography Gregory Colbert is a filmmaker and photographer also renowned as the creator of “Ashes and Snow”, an exhibition of photographs and videos in The Nomadic Museum. Colbert was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. He began his career in Paris in 1983 making documentary films on social issues. His first exhibition, “Timewaves”, opened to wide critical acclaim in 1992 at the Museum of Elysèe in Switzerland. He
began travelling the world to photograph and film wondrous interactions between animals and humans. The real story This photograph hasn’t any story, but his videos are photographs moving. In the videos the characters are wearing buddhist clothes and all photos are with animals. <https://vimeo.com/29498902>
4. Conclusion In this project we learned a lot of things about photography because we learned to read photographs and we liked it a lot because we worked in group and we got to know the story of this photographer.
