1. INTRODUCTION This third term project is about “A Sustainable Fene”. To do it we had to become aware of sustainability We informed us reading articles provided by our English teacher, visiting Aspaneps and making a “PECHA KUCHA” with the candidates of the different political parties for the local elections hold on the past 26 May.
2. GROUP WORK 2A.SUSTAINABILITY 2A.1.What does sustainability mean to us? Sustainability is the process to conserve the environment satisfying the human needs nowadays and also to the future generations
2A.2.HOW DO WE PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY INDIVIDUALLY? We promote sustainability using batteries that are charged with solar energy, disconnecting electrical appliances or battery chargers when we don’t use them, following the rule of the three R's (recycling plastic, paper and glass, reusing bags when we go shopping, avoiding containers and unnecessary packagings...) Closing the tap when we don’t use it, turning the lights off when we don’t need them, avoiding the heating or the air conditioning when it isn’t necessary, we try to travel by public transport more than by cars... 2A.3. EXAMPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY Some examples of sustainability are: - To protect terrestrial and marine fauna (avoid the overexploitation and contamination) -
To restructure public spaces to assist pedestrian mobility.
-
To stay a limited time in the shower to reduce the use of water
-
To use digital media to reduce the use of paper and ink ( newspapers, magazines…)
-
The places where there are many public transports
-
The different services (cleanliness services…), the different containers to recycle, reduce and reuse... The places where there are many public transport (trains, buses, bicycles stations…)
2B. Community 2B.1. THE STRENGTHS AND NEEDS OF MY COMMUNITY The strengths of my community are: it has some green spaces, public streets, squares, parks, urban spaces…. Almost all the people can afford to have a home to live with potable water, electricity and most important, with a roof. There are also beaches, libraries, swimming pools, soccer fields, sanitary and educational services (hospitals, public and private schools and secondary schools). All of this is very important because it's fundamental that children have game areas in good condition, that all people have a home where they can live and have basic services. But my community also needs: to clean beaches with more frequency because some beaches aren't sufficiently clean, put wind farms and solar panels to save energy, improve the quality of urban furniture and public transport (more punctuality, etc.), cut the grass if necessary, put bicycle lanes and sidewalks to increase their use and to walk and needs more containers in more places in the community, like this, people can throw the rubbish near the houses. Also needs more public transport, for example the bicycle stations for the people that haven’t got cars and people need to help and recycle more in their houses, in the community…
2C. SERVICE LEARNING AND ITS PURPOSE Service learning entails integrates community service and academic learning in a single project that focus on teaching and investigation. It allows the students learn the needs of their environment with the objective of improving it while they work. 2C.1. EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS FROM DIFFERENT PLACES
In different countries sustainability is practiced, for example: ● Producing a part of their electricity from renewable resources, ● Protecting nature and green spaces. ● Many business participate in energy activities, waste activities, water conservation…
More in specific: ❖ Italy made a global movement of cleaning where they recollected a lot of litter. ❖ Nigeria has a fleet of bicycles that collect and recycle the litter from poor neighborhoods, encouraging families to recycle bottles, cans and plastics. ❖ In Switzerland, volunteers collect pieces of clothing from different shops and then, they are classified and resold, recycled or reused. Volunteers receive a reward for their actions. ❖ United States developed "The Solar Suitcase", a project that provides solar energy for medical lighting, mobile communication and medical tools for rural areas, improving the chances of mothers and their children to survive. They also created a technology that converts greenhouse gases in plastic, which permits to replace plastics based in petroleum with a sustainable product. The technology was used to make chairs, bags and mobile protectors.
2D. THE GREEN SPACES A green space is a demarcated piece of land where there is vegetation. It could be a forest, a jungle, a park or a garden, but it has to be in a city or in an urban mass. The citizen of Fene must have a disposition for green urban places because they are necessary to improve the health of the population.
2D.1. THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GREEN SPACES We find two types of green spaces: -
Natural green spaces. These spaces were developed in a natural way.
-
Unnatural green spaces. These spaces were created for the humans when the natural green places started to decrease.
2D.2. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GREEN PLACES -
To increase the life expectancy because they help to encourage creativity and mental and affective abilities.
-
To practice sport more healthily.
-
To create ecological conscience and the importance to conserve the nature.
-
To avoid the climate change.
2D.3. EXAMPLES OF GREEN SPACES ❖ NEW YORK: The Central Park with many hectares of forest, park, lake, bridge and sculpture. ❖ BARCELONA: “El Parc de la Ciutadella”, where there is a lake, a monument, some spaces to walk and a zoo. ❖ MADRID: “El Parque del Retiro”, a garden with a big story reconverted in a public park.
2D.4. THE GREEN SPACES OF FENE There are some green places in Fene, for example: “Parque Lineal Río Cadavo”, “Río Belelle”, “”El parque del payaso”, etc. that we have to protect because there are too many buildings that prevent the proliferation of natural spaces.
We think that one of the solutions could be to promote civic participation initiatives to collect garbage, to raise awareness to the population that we have to recycle, to prevent especially packagings and containers…
3. ASPANEPS ASPANEPS is an association for people with disabilities. First they came to our school library to talk about sustainability, the ecological debt, the environmental crisis, what the ecological footprint is, how it is calculated and other information. Then, we visited ASPANEPS and they told us what they do to promote sustainability and, then they explained their solar kitchens, their vegetable garden, how they do the compost, etc
4. PECHA KUCHA WITH THE POLITICIANS OF FENE The politicians of Fene came to our secondary school to explain us what they have in their platforms about sustainability and to answer our questions. The biologist of the BNG told us about the importance of the civic implication and of the education and the participation of the people of any age. To raise awareness of this is necessary to know our environment.
The political representative of the PSG PSOE explained us the ideas to increase the renewable energies and to change the electrical system of the public lights and the fleet of vehicles and the central heating, giving importance to the economic costs. The representative of the PP told us the ideas in their platform: To adapt the public buildings with renewable energies. -
To put brown containers in Fene for the organic waste.
-
To put LED lights in the municipality.
-
To Purify the water of the sewage system.
The representative of "Compromiso por Galicia" explained us the seventeen objectives of the ONU. The "Esquerda Unida" leading candidate has planned to prevent fires, the cleaning of the estuary, rivers and hills taking advantage and creating new jobs to cut weeds.
5. CONCLUSION This experience, for us, was innovative because the politicians never came to this secondary school, but I think that they were not too much objectives in their expositions because they didn’t say what they are going to do if they win the elections. We believe that the important part was when they answered almost all the questions because they gave the information to complete our project. We think that they respected their turns and the time that they had. In conclusion, I believe that all of the political parties have some marked objectives but none planned to make specific changes in Fene because only one of them had the idea of to put brown containers.
