1.Introduction We did this project about “A sustainable Fene” in two subjects: English and Social Studies. We learned a lot of things about sustainability by doing some activities as to visit ASPANEPS, to have a conference with Xabier Picos and to do a Pecha - Kucha with the politicians of Fene. To do the whole project we followed different steps. First, we did an individual part, in which we explained what sustainability is for us and the best and worst things of Fene. Then, we did a group work, in which we put up our opinions and conclusions of the activities.
2.Sustainable things For us sustainability is to satisfy the needs of the people of natural resources, that don’t contamine and don’t harm future generations, It’s also the activities and things that don’t contaminate the earth and keep a place without contamination, with green places, with a good economy, education, health service…, with a clean estuary, with good public transport, etc…
We can do a lot of things to promote sustainability in Fene. For example: ● To reduce energy in our houses. ● When we go to the supermarket, to use paper bags or reutilizable bags ● To put in practice the 3Rs (reduce, recycle and reuse). ● To use the public transport or the bike and not the private transport. ● To use the waste papers and not to throw the rubbish to the floor. ● To recyclate organic rubbish to fertilize my vegetable garden. ● Trying to save water, for example: I can close the water tap when you aren't using it, reducing the shower time… ● Putting off the lights when you aren't using them. ● Convincing our parents to use electric cars.
2
Examples of sustainability (that we didn’t do) ● To use the renewables energies (eolic, hydraulic, sun, energy produce by waves,...). ● To accumulate the rainwater for use it in watering. ● To plant green spaces in the cities. ● To practice crop rotation (different types of crops in an area in different seasons)
Things to highlight of Fene Bad things ● The public transport service is bad ● The recycling center is not too close. ● The places for parking are very limited. ● There are some roads in bad condition. ● There are few recycling containers and you need to move quite far away to recycle. ● People don’t respect the different types of containers. ● There isn’t a cycle lane. ● People use their own cars instead of using public transport or bikes ● People drop the rubbish to the floor even it isn’t biodegradable
Good things ● There is a health center. ● There are public resources (school, library ...) ● Many people have their own vegetable garden ● There are a lot of forests and plants in the streets.
Service learning It is a new experimental education that combines learning objectives with community service in ways that can benefit both things.
3
Examples of service learning ● To Work on a Habitat for Humanity project constructing housing for families without any money ● To Work with a neighborhood association. ● Students in biology class plant trees and grasses in wetland areas with a conservation group. ● Students in a public relations class create a campaign for a local organ and tissue procurement organization. ● Boys and girls of “El Valle del Ges” take care of the fountains that are in their community, they learn things about fountains like the animals and the things that are near them. ● The boys and girls of the high school “IES Puerta de Cuartos de Talavera de la Reina” are trying to convince the students to have a more sustainable life.
3.Activities ● CONFERENCE WITH XABIER PICOS AND VISIT TO ASPANEPS Xabier Picos is one of the people that works in the occupational center ASPANEPS in Fene. With the people that attend to the center, he is doing a sustainable project. They try to take care of the environment. To do this, they use solar kitchens, they make compost, they take care of an ecological vegetable garden where they plant food to recompense the neighbours who help the organization to do the compost. We learned these things when he came to our high school to explain them and when he invited us to the association to see their fantastic work. We learned different things about these two activities. It was funny for us to visit the people of ASPANEPS. It was very interesting to know all the things that they do for the environment.

● PECHA - KUCHA WITH THE POLITICIANS The neighbours of Fene went to the polls on the 26th May. Because of that we decided that it would be a good idea that the parties of our council came to expose their platforms in relation to sustainability. Six days before the elections, we organized a Pecha - Kucha in “O Segrel do Penedo” School Library (IES de Fene). All the parties accepted our proposal from the moment we invited them. All of them sent a political representative. We got to these conclusions after listening to their expositions: ○ PSdeG (PSOE) In their platform they propose to put better windows in public spaces to keep the temperature of the interior and new boilers that don’t contaminate so much. These and other affirmations are good for Fene but no for its economy.
○ BNG For this party it is very important that the people of Fene know how their environment is and how to take care of it. They want to clean the estuary and replant all the forests and hills which were affected for the fire. ○ PP The PP says in its platform that in Fene it could be good to put a “brown container” only for organic waste. They also say that the “PACES”, the pact among the mayors in Europe could be so interesting for Fene.
5
○ EU The candidate of this party said that for them it is very important take care of green spaces. It is also important to clean all the waste that in has been in the estuary for so long. ○ CXG In the Pecha-Kucha, this party told us the difference between “sustentabilidade” and “sostibilidade”. He explained the importance of the UN 17 sustainable development goals too. But he didn’t explain us the things that his party had in their platform for Fene
4.Public transport Inside our project we decided that the thing with less importance for the people is the public transport. For this reason, we got this solutions: ● Reduce the pavement or the parking for create a cycling road. ● Put a public service of bikes to promote it use. Want to change this doing different things, for example: ● Street bikes for free use. ● Public transport (buses) accessible for all the people. There should be a bus just for Fene and it could take you to any place of the council, because Arriva buses only go along the principal road.
6
â—? To Reduce the pavements and the parking and put cycle roads. â—? We think that in Fene There could be a special day whose name would be "The day of the bikes" During this day all the roads would be closed and the people would have to move by bike or walking. This could be one day, or more days during the year.
5.Conclusion For us, this project has a very big importance to know the problems that we are causing to the environment with which we are coexisting every day. We also learned different solutions to try to contaminate less. The activities that we did this month were amazing. We really had fun doing this project.
