O captain My captain O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done; The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won; The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring: But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills; For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding; For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head; It is some dream that on the deck, You’ve fallen cold and dead. My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will; The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done; From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won; Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells! But I, with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. 2

4.Analyze the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” We think that this poem, has a principal theme that is the sadness because of the captain's dead, but also we think that at the same time the poem conveys a sensation of happiness because the crew outlasted the storm in the ship. Some members of the group have a different point of view about the poem. The speaker in this poem is a specific person because he is the captain´s son, also the speaker is an observer. We think that he refers to himself in first person because he expresses his feelings, also we can locate the poem in the age that was Abraham Lincoln's murder, because Walt Whitman wrote this poem in memory of him. The point of tension in this poem,we think that is the captain´s death and the sadness of this situation(the dead of the captain). The poem has a lament that is repeats sometimes “O captain! my captain!”. The metaphor of the poem, is that both the captain's death and Abraham Lincoln's murder are connected because in the two situations they were the leader of the “crew”.

Christelle thinks that the poem expresses joy and sadness in the first paragraph, and in the second and the last one (paragraph) she thinks it expresses sadness because the poem is about the captain's death. Paco thinks that he chose this poem because he liked, the sensation of sadness that the poem gets with the captain’s death that leads the sensation of joy, because they outlasted the storm, also he liked the different ways that the author used to express this feelings of the poem . Finally he thinks that the poem was written to remember the captain. Alexis thinks that the poem expresses completely the sadness of the loss of a leader and after this it came a moment to remember the captain, because this is the way to express the captain was a good person.
