Still I Rise by Maya Angelou

You may write me down in history

you may kill me with your hatefulness,

with your bitter, twisted lies,

but still, like air, I'll rise.

you may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise

Does my sassiness upset you?

that I dance like I've got diamonds

Why are you beset with gloom?

at the meeting of my thighs?

'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells pumping in my living room.

Out of the huts of history's shame I rise

Just like moons and like suns, with the certainty of tides,

Up from a past that's rooted in pain

just like hopes springing high,

I rise

still I'll rise.

I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Did you want to see me broken,

Leaving behind nights of terror and

bowed head and lowered eyes?

fear

Shoulders falling down like teardrops,

I rise

weakened by my soulful cries. into a daybreak that's wondrously clear Does my haughtiness offend you?

I rise

Don't you take it awful hard? 'cause I laugh like I've got gold mines

bringing the gifts that my ancestors

diggin' in my own back yard.

gave,

You may shoot me with your words,

I am the dream and the hope of the

you may cut me with your eyes,

slave. I rise I rise I rise.

1. Introduction We are going to analyse “Still I Rise by Maya Angelou and the poems that we wrote. The objective of this project is to help us to analyse poems., to motivate young people to read poems and so to encourage creativity.

2. Analysis a. Maya Angelou Maya Angelou was an American poet, storyteller, activist, and autobiographer who was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri and she died on may 28, 2014. Angelou has a broad career as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood's first female black director, but she is more famous as a writer and poet. As a civil rights activist, Angelou worked for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

b. Common part We chose this poem because when we read it for the first time it surprised us and we liked it. The first time that we read the poem we had different opinions about the meaning of the poem but when we searched for information about Maya Angelou, we realized that it is about the injustice of racism, specifically the racism that women suffered in the past. We think like this, because the author was an old black woman and for this verses * “Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise that I dance like I've got diamonds at the meeting of my thighs?” We think it refers to the control of men over women, “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies, you may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust, I'll rise.” because black people were treated like savages, “I am the dream and the hope of the slave” because they were slaves in the past, “I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear. I rise” we think it is when Maya Angelou explains that she will fight so that the fear, the discrimination and the mistreatment that they suffered in the past will never be repeated. When we read this poem we feel the rage, fighting spirit and expressivity that Maya transmits us.

c. Individual part i.

Lois

I chose this poem because I like the poems where the author fight with other people for equality. The poem means for me that there are many bad people that insult you but you must forget those people and protect yourself from the problems. I also think that there are people that will help you to face those problems. I also think that Maya Angelou did this poem about the bad life that had in past. Problems with the black race, women etc...

ii.

Cristina

I think that the poem is about a woman who was abused and she separates herself from her abuser. In the poem she talks to her battered and she asks him why he did that but she tells him that she will get up in spite of everything. I think the theme of the poem is that because the author writes: “ Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom?”, “Did you want to see me broken, bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, weakened by my soulful cries”, I think it is for the mistreatment; “Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise that I dance like I've got diamonds at the meeting of my thighs?” I think it refers to the control of men over women in a couple’s relationship. This poem makes me feel bad and good: bad, because this situation is real and it is a very big problem in society, and good because in the poem the abused will fight to be happy. iii.

Sara

I chose this poem because when I read it for the first time it surprised me and I liked it. The first time I read it, I thought it was about never surrender, no matter what happens, you have to keep trying, fight for what you believe . The second time I thought it was a critic against the intolerants and the last one that the poem criticized machismo .

6

I liked this poem because I liked all the themes it could be about When I searched for Maya Angelou and I saw her, an old black woman, I thought that the poem could be about racism where a woman denounces the mistreatment that they suffered in the past and that it still continues. She will do everything that she can to change it. When I realized this it made me love the poem.
