1. INTRODUCTION During the third term, we have worked with songs and poetry. We wrote different kinds of poems like Acrostics, Calligrams, Dadaist poems and Haikus. In this project we are going to analyse a song and a poem. First, we’ll go into detail about them. In this way, we will talk about features such as origin, lyrics theme, meaning and context. Besides, we would like to share with you feelings that we lived while listening to and reading them. On the other hand, we will look for composers, singers and any other information that we need. Finally, we will explain why we chose our song or poem. Both of us chose a song or poem with a profound story or meaning behind. The selected ones are: “Defying Gravity” by Idina Menzel and “The day will come” by Antía Sabio.

3. SONG ANALYSED (CARLOS) 3.1. MY OWN EXPERIENCE The first time I listened to this song was when I saw Glee in Summer. Firstly, I didn’t like it very much but then I searched for it on Youtube some days later and I loved it. Then, I paid attention to the meaning of the lyrics and I enjoyed it. I think that the message of this song is very useful for many teenagers. Therefore, they should follow their thoughts and believes. However, not everybody can accept it. You may probably have several problems because of trying to change yourself. In any way, each effort has its reward. Besides, the song passes on the importance of being sure of yourself although nobody trusts on you. I really got carried away with it. In this way, I bought Wicked in order to understand properly the story hidden in the song. I read it and I enjoyed it a lot. I discovered that the book is part of a saga called The
Wicked Years which involves four books. Nowadays, I have already read two of them. I chose this song because it has got a profound story behind the lyrics and it’s one of my favourites songs. I used to listen to it too much but recently I don’t listen to it as much as I did. I thought immediately in it while I was wondering which song I could select. From my point of view, it came out so quickly because it was the song which introduced me into musical films. Besides, I really like the message of the song and it helped to choose it. 14
3.2. ABOUT THE SONG Defying Gravity is a song from the famous Broadway musical Wicked. It was sung by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth for the first time in 2003. The song became so popular that it reached high positions in music charts. It was composed by Stephen Schwartz who participated in famous films such as Pocahontas, Enchanted, The Egyptian Prince and so on. This musician has won several important prizes: three Grammys and three Oscars. Besides, he has had star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 2008.
3.3. STORY It’s based on the novel by Gregory Maguire Wicked: The Life and
Times of the Wicked of the West. This book relates the unknown story left out in The Wizard of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival. The protagonist is Elphaba who will change into the Wicked Witch of the West. She’s irritable and misunderstood but she’s clever too. In this way, her evolution will do that we hesitate about our perception of good and evil.
3.4. LYRICS In this song, Elphaba revels against the world which she is living in. She gets the courage to follow her own thoughts and convictions despite other people doesn’t like them. She has changed her mind turning into a new person. This development is owing to her being fed up with 15
following the path laid down by someone else. She knows that she won’t be able to take back her decision and even though people will try to stop her, she’s determined to not being brought down by them.
Something has changed within me Something is not the same I'm through with playing by the rules Of someone else's game Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep It's time to trust my instincts Close my eyes: and leap! It's time to try Defying gravity I think I'll try Defying gravity Kiss me goodbye
16
I am defying gravity And you won’t bring me down! I'm through accepting limits ''cause someone says they're so Some things I cannot change But till I try, I'll never know! Too long I've been afraid of Losing love I guess I've lost Well, if that's love It comes at much too high a cost! I'd sooner buy Defying gravity Kiss me goodbye I'm defying gravity I think I'll try Defying gravity And you won’t bring me down! I'd sooner buy Defying gravity Kiss me goodbye I'm defying gravity I think I'll try Defying gravity And never bring me down! bring me down! ohh ohhh ohhhh!

3.5. OTHER PERFORMANCES This song was played out of theatres in the second season of Fox’s serie Glee by Lea Michele and Chris Colfer. Besides, they replayed this song in the 100th episode with Amber Riley. On the other hand, it’s been translated to the Spanish under the title of
Desafiando la Gravedad and it’s being represented in the Mexican theatre of Telcel by Danna Paola. Nowadays, Christine Dwyer (Elphaba) and Jenni Barber (Glinda) sing it in Broadway.
3.6. ACHIEVEMENTS - The New York Times recognised it as “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster”. - It has been played without stopping in the Gershwin Theatre (New York) during eleven years until now. - It has won more than 50 important awards, including a Grammy Award and three Tony Awards. - The musical has been seen by more than 35 millions of people around the world.

4. POEM ANALYSED (ANTÍA) The day will come wherein nothing will be forever, because neither distance is so big nor time as timeless. But here and now, step by step, second by second, beat by beat, we could do the impossible, no limits. Because with you by my side, hand in hand, I wouldn’t need wings to start flying right away.
It was on a windy day when the breeze showed me the inspiration I needed for my project. I was in the car and I saw the bush leaves moving at the wind rhythm. Then I started thinking about flying and in the wind power. How the air gives us life and how it could takes our life in a heartbeat. Afterwards, I thought about my life and in the person I want to be with if the end comes now, by surprise. Nothing will be forever so I thought about how I feel when I am with her. I thought: “Anyway, we have been together since the first second, the first beat... We took our first steps together so, why couldn’t we doing the impossible or just be together forever?” I don’t believe in happy
19
endings and less that happiness has an ending so I just thought “ Why not?” It could be that the result was completely different to the first idea but it represents how I feel when I see her and I tried to express it in a different way that I usually do. I wrote the poem and made the present the same windy day I had both ideas. I didn’t focus my attention on the cover because my thought, when I imagined the present, went to the end of the poem. At first it wasn’t easy to complete the idea because I wo didn’t really know if I could do it but I searched it and I found it. This is for my sister and I really hope she will like it.

5. CONCLUSIONS 5.1. CARLOS’S CONCLUSION At the beginning, I wasn’t delighted about doing a poetry project during the third term. I don’t hate poetry but I don’t like it as much as narrative. I’d have prefered a project of a free topic. Nevertheless, it wasn’t wrong at all. I enjoyed creating haikus, calligrams and acrostics but not dada poems, they are a little bit difficult. Anyway, I liked doing those works. Besides, I could analyse a beautiful song and learn things that I didn’t know such as the composer, other performances and prizes of the musical. I also went into emotions in depth that the song hides. From my point of view, many of my partners have enjoyed with poetry even though they don’t admit it. In this way, I think that most of them have done a good work with amazing poems. This project has given us a different view about poetry, so different from the poems that we see in language classes.
5.2. ANTÍA’S CONCLUSION When Loly told us about the third term project I saw displeasure faces among my classmates but I wasn’t one of them. Maybe because I sometimes read poetry or maybe because I knew that poetry is more than what we imagine. I think they didn’t like poetry because they didn’t know it. Today, they know more about it and I think that almost all of
21
us have a different point of view and a deeper comprehension about poetry that we had at first. During this term I learnt about differents types of poetry I didn’t know. Also, I understood that people visualise poetry in their own way, different to me and different to any other. I think (that) that is positive because it helps us to have our own opinion, without thinking about what the person who is by my side thinks. In short, I really liked this term project and I liked we could choose how we wanted to do it.
