GiveWell started with a simple question: where should I donate? In 2007, we were employed in the finance industry and researching this question in our spare time. We found that the issues charities address - from fighting disease in Africa to influencing policy in the U.S. - are extremely complex, and useful information about what different charities do and whether it works wasn’t publicly available anywhere. Answering the question of where to donate turned out to be much more than a part-time job; that’s why we started GiveWell.
