ake-A-Wish® Southern Florida has granted more than 13,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. The non-profit organization aims to grant a wish for every medically eligible child in its territory. Typically, there are five types of wish requests: “I wish to be” (something), “I wish to meet” (someone), “I wish to go” (somewhere), “I wish to have” (something), and “I wish to give” (to a cause). However, one of the most recent wishes surprised ever yone. Cole Vaccarella, a 17-yearold cancer survivor from Davie, did not want anything; He wanted to do the giving. PLANTING THE SEEDS FOR A WONDERFUL HARVEST

lmost three decades ago, Renee Herman was determined to teach children at a young age to give back and give out to the community. So, the ambitious individual created “The Harvest Drive” at Country Isles Elementary. What started with just a few bags of groceries at the Weston school has grown into 13 distribution sites with almost 200 schools participating and teaching students to give back and share kindness. “Food is… fuel, joy, necessary, shared with family and friends, a source of strength and the centerpiece for many of our fondest memories. The Harvest Drive is a fabulous opportunity to make a difference in the lives of future philanthropists, namely the many children who have been at the helm of our year-round collections for 29 years,” explained Harvest Drive Founder, Renee Herman. During this year’s annual Harvest Drive, students, and staff from Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) recently helped families in need this past Thanksgiving. Schools across the district collected non-perishable food and other donations along with community businesses, corporations, civic organizations, Parent Teacher Associations (PTA), volunteer organizations, and individual

donors. Western High School was just one of the many schools which participated. “All the kids who come, they want to be here, they want to help,” explained Cayla Ankney, To solve the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column and Western High School Student. “I got involved at box must contain the numbers 1 to 9. first because my friends were doing it and then I realized what the bigger goal of it was and how essential it is for other people. These families then picked up their donations which also included the groceries for a Thanksgiving meal. This year they fed 360 families out of the Davie high school, but overall, about 2,200 families were fed through the abundance of donations. “We are so lucky to be part of the Broward County School Board that they let us come in and do this project to teach our kids why it is so important, especially after the two years that we've had,” added Herman. “We love what we do. We have the passion in the heart, and this is what we try to teach our kids.”

The Achilles' Tendonitis

t is said that the heart and soul of every running athlete is in his Achilles' tendon. In ancient mythology Achilles is described as the swiftest and fastest of heroes. His perfect form and lightning speed rendered him untouchable by his enemies. He was totally impregnable with one exception, his Achilles heel. Truly many athletes especially runners fall victim to the same crippling malady as Achilles did himself. If not dealt with rapidly and properly, the condition frequently becomes debilitating and in certain instances even life altering. Three large calf muscles, the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles merge to form the largest tendon in the body otherwise known as the Achilles or triceps surae. The tendon is anchored into the back of the heel bone and its principal function is to pull the heel up and push the foot in a downward direction. This allows the athlete to rise vertically and propel forward. A second unappreciated function of the Achilles tendon and its calf muscle is to decelerate the leg as it swings through the air and stabilize the knee while it flexes to absorb shock when the foot hits the ground. The calf is ultimately converted into a shock absorber damping the blow sustained during impact, and with each foot strike absorbs three to five times the body weight while running. Repetitive movement of the Achilles tendon may result in a chronic overuse injury such as tendinitis (tendon(itis) referring to inflammation of a tendon). Some physicians prefer the term Achilles tendinosis to Achilles tendinitis because scientific research has revealed little inflammation around the tendon. Initially Achilles

tendinitis is noticed during the first step out of bed in the morning. There is a feeling of discomfort, stiffness and tenderness in the back of the ankle. One may often limp until the calf muscle and tendon have stretched out and warmed up. If the condition is left unchecked the discomfort increases in intensity and becomes particularly noticeable throughout exercise until it is disabling. Most athletes recognize Achilles tendinitis as a well localized pain in the midsection of the tendon. A second common location may be at its attachment at the back of the heel. Studies show that one in 10 runners will suffer from Achilles tendinitis and 16% will be forced to end their careers due to chronic pain and recurrence. Therefore, rapid treatment is essential to prevent long term problems. Treating Achilles tendinitis is predicated on the degree of injury and level of damage. Acute injuries often result in swelling and even partial tearing of the tendon fibers. Chronic changes may result in scarring, thickening and degeneration. A foot and ankle specialist will often order an MRI to distinguish the type and amount of damage to the tendon. Activity modification and at times immobilization is warranted to allow the tendon time to heal. A well-developed cross training regimen is essential to prevent an athlete from losing fitness while recovering from the injury. Addressing detrimental biomechanical factors such as tight inflexible calf muscles, pronation, or alternatively supination is paramount. Athletes should avoid running with zero drop or negative heel shoes as this may aggravate symptoms. One may also benefit from reviewing proper running technique, add various strengthening programs and consider the use of orthotics and heel

lifts. Many studies emphasize the value of eccentric strengthening in the treatment of Achilles tendon injuries. Eccentric exercises should start early and are performed by standing on a step or platform and slowly dropping your heel towards the ground. This exercise allows the tendon to elongate and strengthen while accelerating the repair of damaged tendon cells. Ice therapy may reduce the extent of tendon degeneration. The value of anti-inflammatory medication is controversial, and its long-term use may be detrimental. Corticosteroid injections are generally not used and illogical in the treatment of this degenerative condition. However, the use of PRP or injectable placenta/amniotic membrane tissue have been proven to be useful. Ultimately a recurrent condition may result in much frustration and a feeling of hopelessness, oftentimes leading to surgical procedures which could have been avoided with rapid treatment.

n October 18, 2021, Standard and Poor’s Global Ratings (S&P) began their extensive rating review for the Town’s Series 2021 Special Obligation Bonds. The proceeds of these bonds will be used for the construction of a new Town Hall and Davie Wetlands Park. Upon concluding their review, S&P assigned these bonds a “AAA” long term rating. This is the highest possible bond rating that can be attained from any rating agency. This rating is assigned to investment-grade debt that has a high level of creditworthiness, and it also lowers the cost of borrowing for the Town. A “AAA” rating also notes the strong capacity of the Town to repay investors and gives the Town the lowest chance of default. Only 7 other municipalities in the State of Florida have a “AAA” rating. The Town of Davie now joins that elite group. S&P offered very positive feedback related to the Town’s finances and operations. For example, within the Town’s credit overview, the Town was noted for having a strong tax base and economy, strong budgetary reserves and very strong liquidity across all its major governmental funds and that provide flexibility to manage through unforeseen

and unexpected events. Other positive feedback notes the Town’s budgetary performance being strong and robust over the past decade, very strong management, and a strong debt and liability profile. Overall, the Town continues to maintain a very strong financial position, as evidenced by the “AAA” rating. Sustainability awards were presented to six Davie residents at the December 1st Council meeting for their commitment to protecting and preserving the environment. PROBATE AVOIDANCE

eath is inevitable but probate is not. This month’s column will explore what probate is and how to avoid it. What is Probate? Probate is a public lawsuit processed through the court system available to view by all who are curious, a court-supervised administration of debts and assets of a decedent (dead person). Each state has its own laws and procedures for probate, but most share several common elements. Judicial review of a will to be sure it was prepared in a legally sufficient manner; inventory of all assets and creditors; publishing a newspaper “Notice to Creditors” so creditors can file claims against estate assets; orderly prioritization of claims for payment; and accounting of assets and expenses of administration. Finally, there is the distribution of remaining assets to beneficiaries according to instructions in the will (or if no will, pursuant to state laws of intestate succession). Why Avoid Probate? It is expensive. Florida requires an attorney’s participation, and we know that attorneys cost money. Per statute, a reasonable fee for a simple probate is up to 3% of the value of all assets being administered. It is time consuming. Most probates often take 8 to 16 months during which time bank accounts are frozen, and assets may not be sold or distributed without permission from the Court. Add minor children, ownership of a business, substantial creditor claims, or unhappy beneficiaries, and these timeframes can easily double. How to Avoid Probate? If you have a simple straightforward plan to distribute assets after death, you can avoid probate by titling your assets so that they transfer automatically upon your death. Owning assets jointly with others, or with “TOD” (transfer on death) designations can avoid the need for probate. Also, being sure that insurance and retirement assets have beneficiaries and successor beneficiaries named is key. When probate avoidance alone is not sufficient to address your planning objectives, a revocable living trust (RLT) may be the right solution. Situations, such as with blended families, young or immature beneficiaries, or where concerns about creditors or remarriages require a more nuanced management of things after death, an RLT offers an excellent solution. These challenges can be addressed while also avoiding probate. Creating an RLT is more complex and therefore more expensive than just creating a will but offers enormous benefits in addition to saving the costs and length of the probate process. Not only can probate be avoided, but assets can be transferred in a way so that the beneficiary’s creditors, or divorcing spouse, cannot access the inherited assets. The RLT is also a perfect vehicle to manage assets for the benefit of young children or grandchildren or to keep the management of an ongoing business in the control of chosen and experienced hands. Meet with an experienced attorney who specializes in estate planning. Share your goals and concerns with the attorney. Listen carefully to the choices and solutions offered. Make a plan that is right for you. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
