T

he Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the end of 1941 began a chain of events that led to one of the greatest collective acts of selflessness the world has ever seen. Men left well-paying careers to join the army, even with the Great Depression fresh in their memories. Women abandoned traditional roles in the home to work in factories by the millions. The ideals of citizenship and prioritizing the betterment of society above personal goals is, in part, why we refer to those Americans as “the greatest generation” today. People, by the millions, did their duty, regardless of the impacts on themselves. It is time for our generation to do our duty. About 2 million people have died from coronavirus infection globally. The economic impact of the pandemic is measured in trillions of dollars. One only has to go to the grocery store or to pick up a meal at a local restaurant to understand the impacts on a personal level. People have lost jobs, older people are scared and many are or have been sick. But, there is finally good news: if we all do our duty for one another, much of these horrible impacts will soon be in our memories. We must all get vaccinated. The primary benefit of the COVID vaccine is the fact that it reduces a person’s likelihood to give it to someone else. If enough of us are vaccinated, the disease will stop spreading. Even if you are young, healthy, and unlikely to suffer any symptoms at all, you can still be an unknowing, unintentional spreader of a deadly disease to someone who could become very ill. This is our Pearl Harbor moment. It is time for each of us to do our duty in support of a greater cause. Get vaccinated. The life you save may not only be yours.

HIDDEN HEROES

ommunity Foundation of Broward is honoring a resident of Coral Springs and a resident of Parkland as “Nonprofit Hidden Heroes.” The winners were selected for helping their nonprofits to continue to provide valuable services to their clients and the community during the pandemic. Tina Cortez, who lives in Coral Springs, was named one of Broward’s Nonprofit Hidden Heroes for her work as Director of the Wildlife Hospital at the Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital, which is also in Coral Springs. “Tina’s dedication to the animals is evident by the exceptional wildlife care and rehabilitation she provides,” said Robin Reccasina, CEO of Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital. “Tina designed a contactless drop off for the public to drop off injured animals at our gate and responded to every drop off herself.

Having no volunteers, she quickly cross-trained other staff to assist in animal care. She transferred many of the animals that were most critical and had the most demanding needs to her home so she could give them 24-hour care.” Samantha “Sam” Kelly, who lives in Parkland, was honored for her work as 14 / February 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

By

Vice President of Rehabilitation Programs at Lighthouse of Broward for the Blind & Visually Impaired in Fort Lauderdale. “Sam provided vision and leadership,” said Ellyn Drotzer, CEO of Lighthouse of Broward for the Blind & Visually

Impaired. “We knew we had to pivot to an online platform, but our clients’ fundamental lack of sight made this seem almost impossible. Sam led the creative plan to provide uninterrupted rehabilitative services. We closed the building on Friday and by Monday, all of our programming was transformed into an electronic format and services were constructed using a web-based platform.” Cortez and Kelly and their organizations are featured in a virtual awards presentation video via YouTube at https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=cpgs2i9F0hM&feature=youtu.be. Each of the winners receives a $500 award and a prize package that includes a 2-night staycation at the Bahia Mar Fort

Lauderdale Beach Hotel and gift certificates from multiple restaurants. In addition, each of their nonprofit organizations receives a monetary award of up to $25,000 and a VIP seat in the Community Foundation’s upcoming Resilience and Recovery program to improve nonprofit crisis preparedness. Community Foundation of Broward hosted a blue-ribbon judging panel of community leaders to select winners based on the following: --Took on extra work or tasks outside their usual job description --Were bold, innovative, and adaptive --Solved problems to the benefit of the organization and/or clients and community --Created a new system that will continue to be utilized “The hidden heroes that live among us are serving our community every day in our nonprofits here in Broward County and they’ve really helped us get through COVID-19,” said Community Foundation President and CEO Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson. “These are some amazing stories of courage, care, compassion, and love.” For more information, visit www.cfbroward.link/HiddenHeroes

enator Lauren Book of Plantation and Representative Christine Hunschofsky from Parkland are spearheading an effort to rename the Southeast Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation area after the late Representative Kristin Jacobs. Jacobs, a former member of the Florida House of Representatives and a nationally-recognized champion for protecting Florida’s environmental assets lost a battle with cancer last year. She was a former County Commissioner, two-time Mayor of Broward County, and State Representative for District 96. “Kristin not only fought to preserve Florida’s natural treasures, but she also worked hard to ensure public access to and enjoyment of those resources whenever and wherever she could,” said Senator Book, who worked with Jacobs on many legislative initiatives, including environmental issues. Jacobs was a bit of a “throwback” to a previous era. She was known for working with people with differing points of view together and for finding common ground on issues like climate change. Her

collaborative approach led to landmark initiatives, many of which have been heralded as national models. “Kristin understood both the economic and ecological benefits to this coral reef area and helped ensure its protection by having it designated as an important conservation area,” said Hunschofsky, “this is a fitting tribute to forever honor and recognize her legacy of protecting this vital Florida asset.” The Representative Hunschofsky and Senator Book are optimistic that the matching bills they introduced will pass and that the coral reef system will remain a mainstay of South Florida’s ecosystem for Floridians and visitors to enjoy for your years to come.

G

irl Scouts of Southeast Florida (GSSEF) wrapped up 2020 by honoring inspirational women of Broward County with their annual “Girl Scouts Lead the Way” event. These women are leaders in their industry, role models for today’s girls, and they embody the characteristics of a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader). Parkland’s very own Christine Hunschofsky was among the seven chosen for the prestigious honor. The esteemed community figure was the Mayor in the City of Parkland when she received the award. She currently is a Florida State Representative for District 96. “This award means so much to me because it is based not only on leadership and but commitment to community,” exclaimed Hunschofsky. In true Girl Scout fashion, the ambitious organization adapted the event from its

traditional luncheon style to a virtual format. They hosted it on the GSSEF Girl Scouts Lead the Way Facebook event page and placed it on a Facebook LIVE. The other honorees who also received such recognition were Kirsten Charlson, Founder and President, DNA Labs International, Inc.; Melanie Dickinson, President and Publisher, South Florida Business Journal; Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr, City of Fort Lauderdale First Rescue; Susie Levan, Author, Getting to Forgiveness - What a Near Death Experience Can Teach Us About Loss, Resilience and Love; President and CEO, Bee Hive Publishing; Jennifer S. Love, Chief Security Officer and Senior Vice President, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd.; and Captain Renee Peterson, Broward County Sheriff’s Office The free online event included a panel discussion featuring the honorees who discussed their leadership and commitment

to their community, shared their insights on business and current issues facing Broward County, and what impacted and contributed to their success. In addition, attendees heard from local Girl Scouts and had the opportunity to bid on some great items in an online silent auction. The honorary chairs for the event were Michelle Martinez Reyes, Chief Relations Officer, Kelley Kronenberg Attorneys at Law and Christine Walker, Director, Marketing and Public Relations, Holy Cross Health. “By uniting behind a common purpose and remembering what true leadership and service really are, we can all make a difference in our communities and make the world a better place,” added Hunschofsky.

I personally know what it’s like to be a watch stander on duty on Christmas Eve, having done so at several units during the period of my enlistment in the 1970s. It can be a very lonely time and as a group we want to let these men and women on duty know that we’re thinking of them. PREPARED AND

By Sheriff Gregory Tony

hree years have passed since the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The memories of the 17 innocent lives taken from us on that terrible day live on in our hearts and our actions. Never again. Those two words gain more importance as time passes. As the freshman class from that year graduates and moves on to new and exciting endeavors, our work to safeguard our schools continues. Training and preparedness are vital to that mission. As one of the nation’s largest sheriff’s offices, we strive to be the best equipped and most prepared organization in the country. Today, I am happy to say that we are exceeding standards and continuously raising the bar. After a thorough, critical, and honest self-evaluation, we have introduced numerous improvements and initiatives to strengthen our training and readiness. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is the first agency in Florida to have a nationally-certified active shooter training unit. In collaboration with our federal partners, BSO has certified instructors in Active Shooter and Basic Tactical Medical Response, the FBI ALERRT Program, and Incident Command Structure. And for the first time in BSO history, we have broken ground on a state-of-the-art training center. These changes are significantly contributing to safer schools and safer communities. But it’s just the beginning. I am excited to share some details about BSO’s new Department of Preparedness and Response, a critical evolution that better addresses today’s public safety challenges and enhances operational readiness. Established in June 2020, the department centralizes our agency’s training efforts and the deployment of our special operations units to maximize response capabilities. Previously, training had been fragmented, leading to inconsistency and lack of continuity in training protocols. By putting training under one umbrella, we optimize our capabilities, resulting in superior service to Broward County. The new department also provides for greater accountability. Whereas previous training records would only show someone attended training, each person is now independently evaluated on course performance objectives. Another aspect of the department is the new Threat Intervention Tactics Analytics Network (TITAN). This intelligence-led policing unit works to mitigate terrorism and acts of violence throughout Broward County. Comprised of an eight-person full-time SWAT team — the first in BSO history — the unit provides high visibility and tactical security in critical infrastructure locations, including airports and seaports, throughout the county. Should there be a critical, mass casualty incident, this highly-trained unit will facilitate an immediate tactical deployment. TITAN personnel also work to mentor others throughout BSO. TITAN responds to any incident that requires four or more deputies. The team reinforces training and helps establish proper procedures and protocols during small-scale incidents so deputies are better prepared and ready to respond appropriately during more critical events. “Establishing Incident Command is vital during critical incidents,” said Colonel Steve Robson, who leads the Department of Preparedness and Response. “The onsite training provides deputies with the opportunity to experience the type of response necessary should we have another incident like Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Everyone knows what to do and can perform as expected.” The department is also ensuring our first responders have what they need to perform their jobs. As other public safety agencies, government entities and healthcare systems scrambled to procure critical personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Preparedness and Response, in partnership with the county, is establishing a strategic stockpile of PPE for all first responders in Broward. This is another first time preparedness initiative created by BSO. As the county’s lead public safety agency, we should never rely on state or federal partners to provide the equipment necessary to ensure our community’s safety. The department is aligned to ensure preparedness and accountability to address today’s public safety threats. Their structure draws attention as a flagship model for other public safety agencies around the country looking to implement similar changes. I am proud of our efforts and will always work toward implementing best practices to safeguard this community. Service Equals Reward,

Sheriff Gregory Tony Broward County Sheriff

February Message

W

e remain optimistic that with the mass distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines, the end of this unprecedented pandemic is in sight. City staff continues to work with the Florida Department of Health and Florida Department of Emergency Management to ensure free COVID-19 testing remains readily available for residents, which is crucial to preventing the spread of the virus. Perhaps most importantly, providing access to COVID-19 vaccination sites remains one of our greatest priorities. Sign up for our text message option to receive real-time information about vaccination sites by texting the keyword CORALSPRINGS (one word) to 888-777. February is Black History Month, and we are proud to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans in our city. We look forward to highlighting local black leaders in our city nominated by our community. For more details visit www. coralsprings.org/bhm. This month and every day since February 14, 2018, we continue to remember and honor the 17 students and staff who died at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We also remember all of those who were injured and forever touched by the violence experienced that day. Three years does not ease the heartache resulting from such loss – we will never forget and continue to provide meaningful ways to commemorate and honor the memories of: Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Christopher Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup and Peter Wang. For residents and community members who continue to struggle with mental health, especially in the wake of such loss, there are many resources available. Please call 2-1-1 for suicide intervention, those at risk can also text “FL” to 741-741 to immediately speak with a counselor. For additional resources – we offer resources on our website at coralsprings.org/mentalhealth. Since that tragic day, our city remains committed to ensuring the safety of our students and faculty. Our Police Department has demonstrated their commitment to ensuring school safety by implementing new technology connected directly into our Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). Using advanced software, security systems are integrated directly into the RTCC improving response times and saving critical seconds during emergency situations – when time matters the most. On February 19, residents will be able to celebrate all the reasons we love to call Coral Springs home at our Virtual State of the City. For more details about this event, please visit www.coralsprings.org/events. We encourage you to remain vigilant to prevent the spread of COVID-19, continue to wear a facial covering, remain socially distanced and follow good personal hygiene.

o matter how much time passes, February 14, the day of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, will always be a day that profoundly impacts our community. While most people in other parts of the country have moved on, we continue to work to move forward all while respectfully acknowledging the incredible loss, pain, and trauma that affected so many in our community. We will never forget the 17 whose lives were taken that day – Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Biegel, Martin Duque, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Chris Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang. Each one of these people left behind grieving family members and friends. For those who lost loved ones, every day is difficult and February 14 will especially be so. In addition to those that were taken, we also acknowledge and remember the 17 people who were physically injured on February 14 and the hundreds more who were traumatized. Everyone who lived in our community that day was somehow affected, and many of the emotions from that day may resurface as we near the third-year mark. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

February is a Time for Reflection

I

n February we honor Black History all month long. We also honor President’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Sadly, in our community this will also be a reminder of the horrific tragedy that took place in our city. On Sunday, February 14, 2021, we will commemorate the third anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in a ceremony at Pine Trails Park. As

By Mayor Rich Walker

we come together to remember those we lost, it is yet another example of Parkland families and the larger community uniting when it matters most. We have seen many examples of this in recent years in an attempt to effect positive change. And, of course, our community is forever grateful for the strength that our families continue to demonstrate as they work toward safer schools and safer communities—not just here, but nationwide. Mental wellness continues to be a vital focal point for our residents as we all continue to work through everything we have endured. We have many partners locally who can assist such as Broward 211, Children’s Bereavement Center, and Eagles’ Haven.

Visit www.cityofparkland.org/MentalWellness for more resources and let’s continue to take care of one another. We cannot afford to overlook the greatest resource we have—one another.
