It’s Hurricane Season

T

he 2020 Hurricane season was one of the busiest on record. There were more named storms in the Atlantic than in any other year in recorded history. Thankfully, South Florida never had a direct impact! We had plenty to worry about with the pandemic. The latest forecasts expect 2021 to also be an above-average year for hurricanes. We all need to be prepared.

It Only Takes One Storm

According to Florida State’s Tropical Cyclone Track Probability Tool, Broward County has about an 80% chance of having a tropical cyclone pass over us and a 30% chance for a major hurricane. Every one of us needs to be prepared. The most important thing is to have a plan. The Department of Homeland Security’s ready.gov/hurricanes website offers the following basic preparedness tips: ⊲ Know where to go if ordered to evacuate and have an idea of where your family will stay if you leave. ⊲ Put together a go-bag that includes flashlights, batteries, cash, a first aid kit, medications, copies of critical personal information, and water. ⊲ If you think you may stay in your home, ensure you have several days of adequate supplies in case you lose power and water supply. ⊲ Create a family communication plan to ensure you and your loved ones are informed. Living in South Florida comes with so many benefits it’s hard to list them all. The biggest challenge we face each year is the threat of hurricanes. A little planning will make a big difference. Have a safe and great summer!

Hurricane Season is Here!

P

BE PREPARED

repare for an above-average Hurricane Season! That is the message scientists working at Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project have for residents of South Florida. The research group predicts there will be 17 named storms in the Atlantic Basin this year. It also gives a 45% chance that a major hurricane (category 3-4-5) will hit the east coast of the United States. The Atlantic has averaged about 12 named storms and six hurricanes a year since 1981 when the center began keeping track. As is the case with all hurricane seasons, it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for everyone. We should prepare the same for every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted. Last year was the busiest Atlantic hurricane season on record. There were 30

named storms and 13 hurricanes. It was only the second time in history that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ran out of pre-selected names and was forced to use letters from the Greek alphabet to name storms. The forecast includes three different models: an extended-range statistical prediction scheme, using 38 years of past data; an analog prediction model; and a statistical/ dynamical model based on 40 years of data. All three models call for an active Atlantic hurricane season in 2021. Factors contributing to the forecast include La Niña conditions in the tropical Pacific. La Niña, which means “little girl” in Spanish, results in colder water off the California coast; the cold water pushes the jet stream northward and leads to warmer conditions in the tropical Atlantic. La Niña

conditions are associated with increased storm activity. The tropical Atlantic currently has near-average sea surface temperatures, while most of the subtropical Atlantic is warmer than normal. Colorado State’s seasonal forecasts were developed by the late Dr. William Gray. He was the lead author on these predictions for over 20 years and continued as a co-author until he died in 2016. In addition to pioneering seasonal Atlantic hurricane prediction, he conducted groundbreaking research in a wide variety of other topics, including hurricane genesis, hurricane structure, and cumulus convection. His investments in both time and energy to these forecasts cannot be acknowledged enough.

L

iving in South Florida has so many incredible perks. For much of the year, our weather is unparalleled, our beaches are envied around the world and South Florida’s culture is second to none. Of course, with all that good, we do get a bit of bad: hurricanes. As we stay on the lookout for upcoming storms, it’s important to think about what will be needed in the event of a hurricane. After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water, and other supplies to last for several days. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends each family create a disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-tocarry containers like plastic bins or large duffle bags. Make sure your items are stored inside air-tight plastic bags.

Hurricane Preparedness

STARTS WITH A PLAN By Jon Duka

T

he 2021 hurricane season is expected to have more storms than usual. We all know what happens when a hurricane heads toward us: lines at gas stations form, grocery store shelves empty, and room rates at hotels north of us skyrocket. The most important thing someone can do to ensure they are safe in the event of a major storm is to create a hurricane emergency plan.

Should I Stay or Should I Go

The first and perhaps most important thing to plan is whether or not you will stay or leave when a storm hits. If leaving is part of your plan, make sure you know where you are going long before storm season. Pre-arranging a visit with family or friends will make things much less stressful.

26 / June 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

Plan your evacuation route thoroughly and what time of day you plan to evacuate. There are only two major highways that run north from Broward County. Driving at night may be a better idea than during the day if many people are evacuating. If you decide to stay, make sure your hurricane kit is ready. Be prepared for temporary power disruptions. Public water sources may become contaminated, so be sure to have plenty of bottled water. You might even want to fill a tub the day of the storm.

Home Preparations

It is critical to prepare your home and property for a storm regardless of whether you stay or leave. Much of this work can be done long before a hurricane is imminent. Clean up and remove debris or any item

that could become airborne and damage property. Make sure hurricane shutters are easily accessible and that you have the correct amount to secure your home properly. Make sure you know who will be putting the shutters up in the event of a storm. Trim trees and bushes and remove ripe coconuts from trees.

Pack Your Kit

Pack your hurricane kit or check last year’s to make sure everything is up to date. Stores typically sell out fast when a storm is on its way. Having everything you need ahead of time makes dealing with a storm much easier. Hurricanes can inflict horrible damage to our homes and communities. If we have a good plan, we can minimize the risk to ourselves and our families. Stay safe!

Local Teens Know How to

Tug at Heart Strings By Beverly Perkins

S

even years ago, a group of spirited and philanthropic girls from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and North Broward Preparatory School were determined to make the world a better place. The determined quartet wanted to raise funds for a variety of charities while doing something they enjoyed. To help others, Hanna Guttentag, Stacey Gringauz, Sofia Rothenberg, and Gabby Fisher created 3 Heart Strings. The ambitious teens’ organization design and sell unique and customized bracelets, face masks, and bumper stickers with 100% of profits donated to a chosen charity each month.

Brandon Moldof, Evan Finkle, Alex Birchenall

Most recently, North Broward Preparatory School students collaborated with the non-profit to raise funds and support their fellow middle school student Evan Finkle, an 8th grader who not too long ago completed treatments for cancer. The students sold bracelets with Evan’s initials and raised $2,700 for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH). At the helm of the project was Brandon Moldof, an 8th grader at North Broward Prep and a close friend of Evan’s. When he learned that his friend since the first grade was diagnosed with cancer, he was shocked, concerned, and extremely supportive. Besides being by his side during treatment,

the compassionate and determined teen wanted to do more to honor his longtime mate. He wanted to focus on giving back and turning the negative news into something positive. “Evan and his family mentioned that there were families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital that were facing similar health obstacles, but they did not have the same financial means. The opportunity to give back to these families was a way we could help,” explained Moldof. “Together with my brother Aidan and our friends, North Broward Cares wwas born. We contacted 3 Heart Strings and within one month we were selling bracelets and the rest is history. Upon presenting their check to JDCH CEO Caitlin Stella, the students announced that they would continue their benevolent efforts for Hollywood’s premier children’s hospital by creating a bracelet that features a heart and the initials “JD”. “Evan is a friend that I consider to be like a brother and when your brother is down it’s your responsibility to do anything or everything to help. I will always be there for Evan,” added Moldof.

KOUYOU BUFFET Offers a Taste for Every Pallet By Terry Jaillet

T

he space is open, modern and welcoming. Unlike some Asian restaurants, the decoration is not overstated. The various food options stretch along the side of one entire wall of the restaurant and included sushi options, a salad bar, a hibachi grill, traditional hot dishes, and a dessert buffet. We felt right at home, sitting in our booth next to a window. It is obvious that every aspect of this restaurant is brand new.

THE FOOD

The challenge with any buffet restaurant is balancing choice with quality. Kouyou tackles this challenge by having specialists in each area. The sushi bar is managed by a master sushi chef, while the hibachi is attended by an executive chef ready to cook to order. We found all of the items fresh and well-stocked.

SUSHI

area. But, there is much more. In the evenings, the cold bar includes fancier offering like snow crab legs, oysters, peel and eat shrimp and even more sushi options.

HIBACHI

The Hibachi offers steak, chicken & shrimp, along with a variety of traditional vegetables and tofu. They even offer some unusual items like corn on the cob. The chef made my teriyaki chicken with care. It was perfectly seasoned and not too sweet. The hot food selections are what you would expect from Chinese and Thai cuisine. They include all of our favorites like Szechuan beef, Kung Pao chicking, and Thai coconut shrimp. The dumplings were fresh, which is a tricky thing at a buffet! The salad bar offered a vast choice of vegetables, fruits, and dressings. They even offer pizza and fries for families with picky kids.

“One of the best meals and best values you can find in the area.”-JB

If you enjoy sushi and have a big appetite, this may be the best restaurant in the area. They offer a great variety of rolls, nigiri and sashimi options. The sushi rolls look like works of art. Beautiful, brightly colored and created with obvious care. This is a long way from the typical spicy tuna. The fish lovers in our group loved the Seared Tuna Tataki, Magic Moon Roll, and Tuna Lover’s Roll. The salmon was freshtasting and sweet. They also offered some less-common buffet options like white tuna and yellowtail. Low-card dieters will be excited to know that Kouyou offers several rice-free sushi rolls as well. Sushi-lovers could enjoy a wonderful, satisfying meal without ever leaving the sushi

THE VERDICT

Buffet restaurants offer all-you-can-eat quantities and a broad selection of choices. Good buffets offer those choices with a focus on cleanliness and freshness. Great buffets add expensive, sought-after items like snow crab legs, oysters or filet mignon. Based on these criteria, The Kouyou Buffet is a great restaurant. They have a huge variety of tasty food. Our only problem during our visit was overeating.

Understanding Mental-Wellness, ADHD and Nutrition Deficiencies

R

esearchers are beginning to learn how to favorably influence genes via the study of epigenetics, a gene-}altering process called methylation which is involved in 70% of serious psychiatric conditions. Several studies revealed that most mental disorders involve disturbances or imbalances of essential nutrients that alter brain function. All heritable mental illnesses were presumed to have an unavoidable genetic component and people believe their biological and psychological fate has already been predetermined and is locked in by gene mutations. Many mental disorders now appear to be epigenetic, rather than genetic. This means that gene protein making can be switched on (called gene expression) or off (called gene silencing) by environmental factors such as radiation, temperature, food or lack of food. Certain molecules within foods (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential oils) can do this reliably. Most severe heritable mental disturbances will be reversible once we understand how to tap into epigenetics. Moreover, present nutrient therapies have already resulted in thousands of reports of recovery in persons diagnosed with violent behavior, ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. More than 70% of people with behavioral and mental disorders have a methylation imbalances, this chemical that dominates gene expression. About 42% of schizophrenics are over-methylated while 28% are undermethylated. More than 95% of persons diagnosed with autism, OCD, and antisocial personality disorder (e.g., convicted felons) exhibit undermethylation. The body’s methyl groups arise from methionine, one of the amino acids present in meat and other proteins. There are nutrient therapies that can normalize methylation and correct many brain chemistry imbalances without resorting to drugs. 32 / June 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

By Dr. Andrea Bretal M.D.

Copper overload is a primary offender in many mental disturbances, including autism, paranoid schizophrenia, clinical depression, hyperactivity, learning disability, and postpartum depression. Excessive copper reduces the brain chemical dopamine and increases norepinephrine. During pregnancy, blood copper levels more than double to stimulate the development of new blood vessels as the baby grows rapidly. If copper levels do not return to normal after birth, then postpartum depression may result and antidepressant drugs usually do not help these women. Vitamin B6 is another nutrient that is associated with many mental health issues, producing symptoms of irritability, depression, poor short-term memory, insomnia, muscle weakness, difficulty walking and even psychosis. B6 is needed to produce important brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA (a relaxing brain chemical). Zinc deficiency is the most frequently observed chemical imbalance in

mental health populations. Zinc deficiency is associated with temper control problems, weak immunity, depression, poor wound healing, epilepsy, anxiety, learning problems and hormone imbalances. Another common imbalance is a chemical produced in the body called pyrrole that binds to zinc and vitamin B6 and increases their excretion in the urine. Nearly one-third of persons diagnosed with depression, behavioral disorders, autism, and psychosis have elevated pyrroles. A urine test can reveal whether a pyrrole disorder is present. This important chemical imbalance can be corrected within weeks using supplements of zinc, B-6, and augmenting nutrients. Experience with ADHD and depression patients report significant improvement within month of individualized nutrient therapy and some of them are able to wean away from psychiatric drugs without a return of symptom. Women with post-partum depression have reported significant improvement after blood copper levels were normalized.

ormer Miami Dolphins Probowler, Chris Chambers is giving back to the community in a big way. Chambers is bringing his own youth-focused Chamber Football Academy to the City of Coral Springs. Offering young and upcoming athletes with multiple options for football development training.

Chambers is committed to partnering with the city to offer local football development and performance training for underserved communities through his CATCH84 Foundation (Children Achieving Through Community Help). “Far too many times, talented young athletes are overlooked and undervalued because they don’t have access to the best resources providing performance training and quality exposure,” commented Chambers, “Coral Springs does not offer this kind of program, even though there is a wealth of young athletic talent. Using my own personal experience through the Chamber Football Academy, this is a great resource for Coral Springs youth. With the right mentorship to build a child’s foundation with high-quality athletic development, these kids will have greater opportunities for success.” The Chamber Football Academy will bring elite level football development to the city, to include sponsored football events from the NFL foundation for the city’s middle school and high school athletes to assist in the evaluation process and college recruitment. It is Summer Time Again

By State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky

I

t is hard to believe that another school year is already ending. It has been a challenging time with virtual and hybrid classes and online celebrations. However, with more people getting the COVID-19 vaccine, it is wonderful that we can return to in-person high school and college graduations. Thank you to all the teachers, administrators, staff, and volunteers for everything you do throughout the school year for our students. The last year has been a challenge for everyone. Thank you to the teachers who worked hard to teach their students under these difficult circumstances. Students, we are extremely proud of you and wish you the best of luck whether you are moving on to work, gap years, internships, college, high school, middle school or beginning elementary school, or moving on to your next grade.

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 20. Thank you so much to all the Dads out there for all you do for your families and for our community. We are very lucky to have so many Dads in our community who are always willing to lend a helping hand. We appreciate you and all you do to make a difference! Father’s Day can also be a difficult day for those who have lost their fathers and for those fathers who are missing their children. Please be mindful of one another and check in on your friends who may be hurting. Hurricane season officially begins June 1, 2021. Now is the perfect time to make your household preparedness plan and to stock up on supplies. This year, the State Legislature approved a 10-day Disaster Preparedness Tax Holiday from May 28 through June 6. Please take advantage of this opportunity to purchase hurricane supplies, such as batteries and flashlights, tax-free. For more information on what items are eligible for tax-free status, visit www.floridarevenue.com/disasterprep. For more information on preparing for a hurricane, visit www.floridadisaster.org/ planprepare. I wish everyone a safe and wonderful summer and hope you have an opportunity to spend quality time with your family and to reconnect. Time moves by so quickly and life can change in a minute so please take the time to appreciate the moments and look for the beauty around you. As always, feel free to reach out to me at any time at c.hunschofsky@myfloridahouse.gov with your questions or comments. I look forward to hearing from you!

t’s hard to believe we are already half through 2021! June marks the end of the school year and the beginning of the summer season. Now that more than half of the Broward County population vaccinated, life has started to feel a bit more normal. We have seen a drastic decrease in demand for testing, which is why both Mullins Park and the Ice Den testing sites officially closed in May. If residents still need to get tested, visit https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/testing-sites/ to find the nearest location.

We remind our residents that June kicks-off the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which is predicted to be a busy storm season. As a city, we always prepare and plan ahead of Hurricane Season. We remind our residents to stock up and prepare too. At minimum, residents should strengthen their homes and ensure a fully stocked disaster supply kit. Additional actions residents should take to ensure they are prepared include the following: • Purchase at least 5-7 days of cleaning supplies and nonperishable food. • Prepare to be without power, stock up on batteries and keep electronics fully charged. • Sign up to our text message option for the latest information emergency related information, by texting ALERTCS (one word) to 888-777. • For additional preparation guidance, visit www.coralsprings.org/hurricane.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

PARKLAND UPDATE

une is a special month for many. It is the month when summer begins, school ends, and there is increased support to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. While some are eager to celebrate Flag Day and enjoy the summer Solstice (the day with the longest daylight), others are not keenly looking forward to the rise in temperature and humidity. However, for me, what makes June special is Father’s Day. While Mother’s Day was proclaimed as a national holiday in 1914 it was not until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson officially declared Father’s Day as a national holiday. As a son, I have had two great dad role models, my father and stepfather. While both have passed on, I am inspired everyday by the wisdom, support, and love that they provided.
