“My Mother is so happy that 2020 is over… but not for the reason you think.”

“She can’t wait to leave that big, lonely house and get to a warm and safe place, where she’s part of a community of neighbors like her, doing all the things she loves to do. We feel great about the luxury and comfort of the new Palace at Weston Senior Living. But right now what we love most is the careful, intelligent way they have set up their programs to meet or exceed every standard for health safety. We’ve talked to their team members, we’ve seen how they are trained, and our entire family has peace of mind with Mom living there. I tell all my friends who have older parents like me… go see the Palace at Weston.

Colorectal cancer screening: No good reason to put it off. Everyone knows that colonoscopies are a tool to detect colorectal cancer – the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and the third leading cause among women in the United States. Colonoscopy is known as the gold standard – the best, most accurate test to screen for colorectal cancer. Since most cancers start as polyps, cancer can be prevented when polyps are removed during a colonoscopy. New preps are easier to swallow. You may be concerned about unpleasantness and inconvenience as you prepare for the exam. But it’s time to stop worrying – continued improvements in the process have made it easier and less of a stress. It tastes better, you don’t have to take as much as you did before, and the timing has also changed to make it easier for patients. Concerned about coronavirus? While the coronavirus is still in our communities and is still contagious, Cleveland Clinic is among the safest places in healthcare today. For your safety and those around you, we have taken the following steps: • Limited and screened visitors. • Continued extensive cleaning. • Required masks for our caregivers. We ask that you help us maintain a safe environment by: • Practicing social and physical distancing. • Wearing a mask while in our facilities. • Washing and sanitizing your hands properly.

As we continue to welcome all patients back for regular, routine care, we will continue making your safety a top concern.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Women’s History Month

P

resident Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation establishing the first Women’s History Month celebrated by the United States Government on March 4th, 1988. In his proclamation, President Reagan commented, “Women continue to strengthen the family and enrich our lives with intellectual gifts, creative talents, and indomitable spirit.” Every March since that year has been officially recognized as Women’s History Month in the United States. We decided to celebrate this year’s Women’s History Month by recognizing some of the amazing women in our community. The Exceptional Women in Business section of this magazine highlights the accomplishments and talents of some of the women who make Plantation such a great place to live and raise a family. The contributions women have made to every field and endeavor are infinite. Accomplishments like Marie Curie’s work in physics or Rosa Parks’ bravery that ignited the civil rights movement are even more noteworthy when considering the obstacles they had to overcome. It’s heartening to see accomplished women in positions of power. Today the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel is serving her fourth term. The CEOs of companies like General Motors and Fidelity Investments are women, as are Vice President Harris and Speaker of the House Pelosi. Those leaders would certainly not be where they are today without the accomplishments of countless women before them. It reminds us of Issac Newton’s famous quote, “I have seen further by standing on the shoulders of giants.” As we reflect during this year’s Women’s History Month, we can’t help but wonder on whose shoulders our daughters and granddaughters will be standing. Sincerely,

Terry & Christy Jaillet

CAN DO KID

Plantation Teen Made This Christmas

Even More Merry

H

By Christy Jaillet

igh School students are required to serve a number of hours to graduate. Typically, students volunteer at a food drive or help at a pet shelter. Brady Thomas, a 15-year-old Sophomore at South Plantation High School, had a better idea. Brady knew the pandemic affected many local families financially. He was concerned that kids in those families would not be able to celebrate or look forward to gift-giving like his family did every year. Brady decided to do something about it. Brady, along with his mom, decided to ‘adopt’ a family-in-need during the holiday season so that that family could celebrate. They posted their idea on Facebook, and the response was overwhelming. People from across the community wanted to help. They identified families that needed help and offered assistance. Brady’s dream of making someone else’s Christmas merry was coming to fruition. In fact, they ended up helping ten families! As word of Brady’s mission came out, more and more people came to help. The OJ McDuffie Catch 81 Foundation provided toys, the Plantation Stars 14U Baseball Team pitched in, and many community members reached out to help. Brady’s dad, Stephen Thomas, is a chiropractor who owns Plantation Health and Wellness. Brady placed a box at his father’s office, and the response from the patients was amazing! The gifts ranged from practical things like diapers and baby wipes to this year’s most sought after toys to scooters and bikes. This experience was eye-opening for Brady and his whole family. One of the families they helped was a grandmother raising her two grandkids. “After we delivered the gifts, she stopped us and asked if she could pray for us,” said Brady, “She was the person struggling to make ends meet and to provide a holiday for her grandkids, yet she wanted to pray for my family and me. It shows you how an act of kindness can mean so much to a person.” It was indeed a team effort. Brady’s family (dad, mom, brother, and sister) helped with wrapping, shopping, and delivering to each family. “It helped all of us get in the Christmas spirit and showed us how blessed we are! We will be doing this again next year for sure! We found a new Christmas tradition!” We are all lucky to have young people like Brady.

Celebrity Nails & Design Artists Professional Make-Up Artists Microblading Specialists Facial Experts

W

hen you step into World of Nails & Beauty Lounge on Broward Boulevard, it is pretty clear that it is different from other salons. The salon, which opened seven years ago is the brainchild of Erika Conde, a native of Queens, New York. Erika has always had a passion for designing and creating trendy art. She showed great talent for nail designs and airbrush makeup contouring early in her life. As a result, she took design and creative art classes while still in high school. After moving to Miami, Erika quickly became known as the “Celebrity Beauty Guru.” Her creative instincts, precise attention to detail, and love of color made her a first choice for many celebrities. Stars like Jennifer Lopez, Gabrielle Union, Christina Aguilera, Model

& Actress Nadine Velasquez, the Pitbull Dancers, Dutch Model Imaan Hammam and Nickelodeon actress and singer Elizabeth Elias have all relied on Erika’s unquestionable talent. In 2013, Erika decided to move her salon to Plantation and the World of Nails & Beauty Lounge was born. We had sat down with her to learn more.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

The Best Kind of Mug Shots

A

s a community we all just mourned yet another anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy. Since that time, February 14th has been designated a “Day of Service” so that individuals of all ages can come together and take part in projects that spread love and kindness. Many schools, organizations, and groups do activities that reflect the good they can offer one another in remembrance of the students lost on that horrendous day three years ago.

Although Peters Elementary always teaches and emphasizes kindness to their students every single day (just look at the magnificent mural adorning their school wall), these Pandas were ready to do something extra special last month. “At Peters Elementary we are more than a school… we are a family. We work together to treat others how we want to be treated. This simple act has an amazing effect on others and ourselves,” exclaimed School Resource Officer, Jeffrey Young. “Kindness costs nothing but means everything,” At the helm of all kindness projects are Principal Susanna Deutsch and School Counselor Darcy Dodge who live and breathe the mantra, “Kindness Matters”. This year, all students were asked to bring a new mug to school with the goal of collecting enough to send a “cup of sweetness” to the Plantation Police

Department. However, the PTA decided to ask the Plantation community to become involved and the response was overwhelming. So many mugs were collected that they had enough materials to send to the Plantation Fire Department as well. The school received an abundance of deliveries of mugs from parents, students, teachers, and Plantation residents. The children then wrote messages on heart shaped notes to send with each gift. “Principal Deutsch has created a hands-on way that every child, teacher and community member can get involved! Mrs. Dodge’s office was filled to the brim with mugs. You might say that it was overflowing with love”, exclaimed Peters PTA President, Jessica Valenzuela. “It seems that the project has tugged the heart strings of many.”

Drive-Thru Open House is

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL

I

By Beverly Perkins

t has been a challenging year for everyone as we just reached the oneyear mark for Coronavirus. As all of us continue to navigate the pandemic in the safest way possible, schools are trying to come up with unique approaches to communicate and stay active with their students and families. South Plantation High School (SPHS) recently excelled at accomplishing this task by hosting their first-ever drive-thru

open house for its magnet programs. The innovative event had more than 100 cars come through to see their showcase. Dozens of parents/guardians and future Paladins stayed in their cars while they were able to see South Plantation Everglades Restoration Magnet Program’s decorated tables and interact (6-feet-away, of course) with the students highlighting their clubs. “The event went down just as I envisioned it. I was really proud of myself for staying focused and driven to make my idea come to reality. The best thing was seeing everyone; teachers, staff, and current students, having fun and so enthusiastic to talk about our school, their class or club,” exclaimed Joann Cantlupe, Magnet Coordinator. A variety of seventeen exhibits were available where everyone was able to scan a special QR code to access information,

20 / Our City Plantation / March 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

videos, and such pertaining to each individual program. “The positive emails I received from the staff and guests who drove by made all the work and time worth it. I learned how QR codes can be used so effectively. I also learned that the teachers loved this style of open house because they got to talk to everyone in each car. But I was most proud of how the whole school community, district Magnet, and the city of Plantation all came together to ensure the success of this innovative drive-thru Magnet open house,” added Cantlupe.

Being a woman in the Design field is wonderful because you have the finesse and skill to listen, observe and guide your clients along their design journey. It has also been a wonderful journey for me and my TEAM because we discover the value of relationship building. Challenges are everywhere in all careers, and once you embrace the opportunity to overcome it and find solutions, it becomes another interesting path rather than an obstacle. This career has blessed me with so much self-development: patience, listening, paying attention, being responsive, being upfront with clients, loving every opportunity that comes my way, and trying to be 1% better each time. My clients have given back to me as much as I have invested in them.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN?

If you like working with people, and if you are fascinated by design, go for it. Educate yourself through all media available to you. Be the best you can be and very importantly know what your goal is. You have to find your unique selling proposition. Mine is “Providing Solutions” . Stay true to your mission, have fun, aim to improve daily in all aspects of your life and stay positive. Money should never be your sole goal. 2020 Was a Record Breaking year in REAL ESTATE

H

By Shelley Goldstein

ere are the latest housing market predictions and forecasts for 2021. The global pandemic shattered the world order and the US economy suffered its biggest blow since the Great Depression in the second quarter. The housing market briefly hit pause in March and looked to be headed into a steep decline due to widespread stay-home orders. The pandemic has affected every sector but residential real estate has been very resilient and provided a stabilizing effect for the US economy. 2020 was a record-breaking year for the US housing market. According to Zillow, in total, 5.64 million homes were sold in 2020, up 5.6% from 2019. The typical U.S. home was worth $266,104 in December, up 8.4% (or $20,587) from a year ago. According to economists and market watchers, home values are growing at their fastest pace in a generation, and are showing no signs of slowing down in 2021. Buyers have to face more competition and act more quickly than usual to snag their dream home. That’s how hot the real estate market has been throughout the pandemic. Although millions were laid off or furloughed it didn’t prevent house hunters from buying homes. Both the inventory of homes and mortgage rates are now at historic lows. The months’ supply of existing homes for sale has fallen to 1.9 months, the lowest level since the series began in 1999. With inventories this tight, it is unlikely that existing home sales can continue to rise at last year’s pace, which means there could be a little slowdown in existing sales throughout 2021. For first-time buyers, the combination of intense demand and the low mortgage rates has pushed home prices to levels that are making it difficult to save for a down payment. While we still face economic and health challenges ahead, it is no doubt that the nation will continue to recover from this pandemic and an improving economy will continue to support the housing market competition. Industry experts believe the housing market will remain strong and is set to break more records in 2021. Mortgage rates are expected to stop dropping. Rather, the National Association of Realtors expects rates to average 3.1% and the Mortgage Bankers Association says mortgage rates will average 3.3% in 2021. These rate estimates are both up from the 3.0% mortgage rate average in 2020 but lower than 2019 average rates. The combination of rising mortgage rates and increasing home prices will accelerate the decline in affordability and further squeeze potential home buyers during the spring home sales season. Where does this leave homeowners, potential homebuyers and potential home sellers? Scrambling. Homeowners with no intention of moving can sit back and enjoy the frenzy. Home sellers will grapple with multiple offers but limited purchase and rental options. Homebuyers are arming themselves with a great agent, lots of patience, flexibility and inventive tactics to claim their piece of the American Dream. Real estate and reality - always on the move!

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Are You Single?

I

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

f you are single you make up over 45 percent of the US population. Whether unmarried, divorced, or widowed, single people have important estate planning issues to think about. If you have children, your decisions are a bit more complicated. Consider the following: Single with minor children: It is vital to designate whom you wish to serve as your child’s guardian. Think about this. Even if there is a surviving parent, they may not be your choice to serve as guardian. What about leaving assets to your minor children? Realistically, leaving an inheritance to minor children can be fraught with risks. Who manages the assets for your minor children? Should you select your ex-spouse or perhaps another family member? Often parents select one person to serve as guardian for minor children, name another individual to manage and invest assets for their children, and possibly choose a third to determine asset distributions. Single with adult children: When a child turns 18, legally he or she is fully capable of receiving their inheritance and making life decisions, such as selecting a college or managing and spending their own money. Do 401(k) and IRA accounts constitute a significant portion of your estate? Severe and irreversible tax consequences can result from careless withdrawals from these inherited assets by “young” adult beneficiaries. Do you have any concerns about your child inheriting a large amount of life insurance money? Parents of 18-year olds recognize that while their child is technically an adult, it may be much too early to expect thoughtful decisions regarding their future and their finances. Single without children: If you are single without children, keep in mind that without the existence of a properly drafted and executed will, Florida law dictates that your assets be inherited by your parents. If your parents do not survive you, your assets will be inherited by your surviving siblings. Creating a will is essential if you wish to leave your assets to anyone other than your immediate family. Illness or disability: Whether or not you have children, there are important decisions to make regarding who is authorized by you to assist with medical and financial matters should you become ill or disabled. Advance legal directives, in the form of health care powers of attorney, durable powers of attorney, living wills, and HIPAA releases, insure your bases are covered in various scenarios. Without such documents, urgent medical care, managing a business or your finances, and communicating with governmental agencies such as the IRS or Social Security Administration, may need to be determined by the court. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
