Central Park Elementary Teacher Named Broward County Teacher of the Year By Terry Jaillet

C

entral Park Elementary School Teacher Monika Moorman was honored as Teacher of the Year by Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). She joined Principal of the Year, Dr. Washington Collado from James S. Rickards Middle School, Assistant Principal of the Year, Louis Kushner from New Renaissance Middle School and School-Related Employee of the Year, Jacqueline Sanchez from Griffin Elementary School in receiving honors at BCPS’s annual Caliber Awards. Each Year, BCPS recognizes the very best teachers, administrators, and employees at

its Caliber Awards. The school district is the largest employer in the county, employing more than 34,000 people, making the recognition truly an honor. This year’s awards perhaps meant a bit more as teachers had to overcome significant pandemic-related challenges. Moorman was also recognized by the City of Plantation, declaring March 10th “Monika Moorman Day.” Mrs. Moorman is a 23-year veteran educator who has taught first through fifth grades, and has spent the last three years teaching fourth grade at Central Park Elementary School. Over the years, she has sponsored a variety of afterschool endeavors including Robotics Club, SECME Competition, BCCTM Math Competition, Solar Car League, Green Team and National Elementary Honor Society, to name a few. Monika has filled many different roles at Broward County Public Schools. Her after-school activities include serving on the Broward Gifted Advisory Council board, being a Solar System Ambassador with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, be the

Mrs. Moorman considers education as a journey of self-discovery, where students are empowered to realize their full potential. She believes that it is the teacher’s responsibility to challenge the students to become inquisitive, assertive, self-aware, understanding the need for constant growth. “The next generation should be taught,” she says, “to stand out rather than fit in.” A polyglot, who enjoys exploring nature with a camera in her hand, Mrs. Moorman has learned never to underestimate students’ voices, as they have inspired her most memorable projects. Plantation is lucky to have a teacher like Mrs. Moorman helping our children learn and grow.

Answers for back pain Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center offers comprehensive care

Y

ou bend to grab a piece of paper off the floor and a bolt of pain shoots from your back down your leg. With back and neck pain affecting 80 percent of Americans at some point in their life, it’s an all too common occurrence. But how do you know if the cause of your pain is something serious? The experts at Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center, a part of Baptist Health, suggest a comprehensive evaluation to get to the root of your problem, alleviate your pain and prevent long-term issues. Physiatrists — physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists — at the Center’s multiple locations deal with issues affecting the spinal cord, including problems with bones, joints, nerves, muscles and tendons. “We almost always isolate the issue, and with a proper diagnosis comes the proper treatment,” said Ronald Tolchin, D.O., medical director. Causes of back and neck pain include degenerative disc disease, arthritis, skeletal abnormalities, spinal stenosis, herniated discs and more. Even screen time and texting can throw the neck out of alignment. And with the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors are seeing an increase in back problems due to too much sitting, not enough exercise, weight gain and working at makeshift home offices that lack chairs with lumbar support and arm rests. 16 Our City Plantation / May 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

The Center works with everyone from athletes to the elderly, and handles extremely complex cases. For some patients, an initial assessment is followed by imaging studies — an MRI or CT scan, for example — that reveal problems such as a narrowing of the spinal column, a bone spur pressing on a nerve, bulging discs or arthritis. Nerve conduction studies are performed on-site. The good news is that medical advances have made it possible for most patients to avoid surgery. “We have a whole armamentarium of noninvasive and holistic treatments available today,” Dr. Tolchin said. The Spine Center team may recommend stretching and physical therapy, anti-inflammatory and injectable medications, weight loss with an anti-inflammatory diet and safe exercise.

Some 90 percent of back and neck problems are improved with these noninvasive approaches. For the 10 percent who require surgery, the Center’s team works closely with the neurosurgeons at Miami Neuroscience Institute. “As a comprehensive spine center, not only do we look at you holistically and provide many services in one location,” Dr. Tolchin said, “but I can literally walk down the hall to any of my neurosurgical colleagues, pull up images and discuss a patient.” Follow-up with back and neck pain patients is also important, according to Dr. Tolchin. “We don’t just treat you and say, ‘See you in five years.’ For some patients, the condition can be chronic. We’re a place where they can find salvation, and we will help them get through it.”

In addition to injections that are administered in the office, minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is performed at an outpatient location. RFA uses heat to disrupt the nerve tissue’s transmission of pain signals to the brain. Epidural and facet joint injections are also handled on an outpatient basis. With locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Spine Center appointments can be made by calling 786-596-3876 or visiting BaptistHealth.net/Spine.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood/Aventura, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers,

such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

Caught in the Act Plantation’s Got Talent 2021

B

ack in the 1980s, the City of Plantation created “The Tinsel Town Showcase”. All the city residents were encouraged to share their undiscovered and secret talents and appear before their neighbors, fellow community members, and judges just like the more recent NBC show “America’s Got Talent”. Singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, magicians, and more talented entertainers would come out to the different venues around

By Beverly Perkins town such as the Plantation Community Center, Volunteer Park, and Plantation High School. In 2008, the original talent contest was renamed “The Tinsel Town Cabaret” and then eventually rebranded to “Plantation’s Got Talent”. The last competition was held in 2017, but Plantation’s beloved show was recently revived virtually. A total of twenty-two participants submitted videos in their appropriate age category (Kids, Adults, Seniors, and Groups) which were then posted on the City’s Facebook page for voting. The community was able to cast their votes by entering a letter of their favorite performance in the comments area. An astounding response of over 1,500 comments and over 80 shares were made across the social media platform for the 16 kids, 3 seniors, 1 adult, and 2 group entries. Although the infamous

television series has only one winner who takes home the title of America’s “World Champion” and a life-changing $1 million prize, “Plantation’s Got Talent” declared a winner in each of the four categories and each received a trophy, a certificate, and a $100 Visa gift card. The 2021 winners and “Community Champions” are Victoria Martin (Kids), Gabriella and Carlos Ramirez (Adults), Myriam Carreño (Seniors), and Samia Ibrahim (Opera Singer) and The Plantation Chamber Orchestra (Groups). “Everyone has a talent treasured in their hearts and this was evident in the City of Plantation’s ‘Virtual Plantation’s Got Talent’ contest. We were able to successfully showcase talent from all age groups in our community, creating a safe yet engaging virtual event,” said Luz Reyes, City of Plantation Recreation Services Manager.

The Show Must Go On! E

ach year the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC) sponsors “Art Search” as part of the eagerly anticipated two-day “Art in the Park” event. However, as everyone is aware, large social gatherings are still not able to happen quite yet due to the ongoing pandemic. For 29 years, the popular art contest has been a fixture at the beloved event. But with the combined efforts of The City of Plantation Parks and Recreation Department and the PJWC, the “Art Search” portion was made possible since the ambitious duo came up with a creative solution as well as an appropriate theme to have the show proceed as always. “Art Can Heal the World” was announced and applications immediately went out to all Plantation schools and across social media platforms. The PJWC chose the theme to allow artists to be inspired by all that happened in 2020 because art can be a healing way to express feelings. “We were so happy to get as many entries as we received since so many students were working remotely and dealing with unprecedented challenges,” said Shannon

Ryan, Superintendent of Administration & Special Events. “It was important to The Plantation Junior Woman’s Club that we were able to offer this art contest to our community during this tough year,” added Jamie Eisenstein, President of the PJWC. The outdoor ceremony followed proper safety protocols by providing limited seating, masks, and social distancing. The artwork was proudly displayed along the basketball courts at Central Park for families to view. The students were awarded their prize and photographed with the City of Plantation Council President, Denise Horland. “I was honored to attend this year’s Art Search, not just as a city official, but more personally as the daughter of an artist. Fostering creativity in children is not important for their academic, motor, and social development, but it is an important communication tool for self-expression,” stated Horland. “I am grateful for the PJWC’s long-standing support of this important program, and kudos to our Parks and Recreation staff for a terrific job in putting together this event to showcase our young artists in the City of Plantation.”

A Grave Decision Earned A $2000 Grant for Plantation High School By Beverly Perkins

A

few months ago, The Broward Education Foundation (BEF) received two grants, totaling $4,000 from AT&T. The 501(c)3 charitable organization, solely dedicated to supporting Broward County Public Schools, extended one of these $2,000 grants to Plantation High School to fund Archaeological Tales from the Crypt, an inventive curriculum designed by teacher Roberto Fernandez, III. “Archaeology is the most scientific of the social sciences. As such a lot of what the students are doing, during this project involves the scientific method. Students are using the headstones to learn more about the veteran population at North Woodlawn Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida using historical sources,” explained Fernandez, III. As a historical archaeology project, participating students will collect data from veteran markers at a historic local cemetery,

analyze archival data to learn personal stories about these deserving veterans, and write an analytical report which will help students not only learn about significant historical events but preserve a neglected aspect of Broward’s history as well. “In 2020, I took an ecology class at Broward College, and the professor, Dr. David Serrano required teachers to create a lesson plan, this project bloomed from that class assignment,” added Fernandez, III. The archival data will allow the students to gain additional data that can help them learn more about the military service of these individuals as well as their place of residence, occupation, and cause of death, etc. During the project, the students have shown a genuine interest in learning more about these veterans. “I like it because we get to speak about

what used to happen in Broward County back in the day,” said ninth-grade student Jerrick Wallace. “I like projects like this, they make the learning fun,” added fellow student Laniyah William.

Plantation High School ninth-grader Brian Despeines is completing the forms to request the military records and death certificate of World War II Navy veteran William McCaskill.

Have Your Pet Smile Bright Like a Diamond

Healthy Smiles Pet Dental - Spa Like Tooth Care for Our Furry Friends

I

magine if the sights, sounds, and smells of your pet’s dental office resembled those of a pampering spa. Meet HealthySmiles Pet Dental, Florida’s first-ever non-anesthetic pet dental spa located in Plantation, Florida. Pets are greeted by aroma and sound therapy featuring relaxing scents and sounds that create a calming atmosphere. CBD relaxation options are also available. The cageless and open concept environment featuring glass playpens ensures less stress and faster treatments. In addition, because it’s non-anesthetic, it’s safe. No medications are used and no downtime is required. HealthySmiles’ warm, contemporary design features white, modern subway tiles, warm woods, and ample open spaces anchored by green plants and natural materials. An educational area in the lobby features three, semi-private viewing stalls with touch-screen computers displaying a library of relevant information at customers’ fingertips. A well-curated retail area in the lobby showcases a variety of organic pet dental products including pet-specific toothpaste and toothbrushes, vegan dental chews, dental wipes, coconut oil, pet breath fresheners, and other natural pet products. Once HealthySmiles determines that a pet’s dental condition and behavior are suitable for the procedure, they gently swaddle the pet to

ensure it feels safe. Then, a five-step process is used to safely deep clean their teeth without anesthesia. They begin the dental cleaning by removing the plaque and calculus on pet’s teeth. They further clean the bacteria under the gum line and finish by polishing, wiping, and rinsing the mouth. Pet parents even receive “before” and “after” photos to document their pet’s smile makeover. Some of the signs a pet needs a dental cleaning include bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, discolored teeth, excessive drooling, difficulty eating or drinking, difficulty swallowing, and face rubbing or pawing of the mouth. There are many advantages to non-anesthetic versus anesthetic dental. An anesthesia dental, which typically costs between $400 to $1,000 dollars, requires sedatives and general anesthesia where both IV and inhalation are used. Pre-anesthetic lab work is required to ensure the pet’s internal organs can support general anesthesia, and the lengthy procedure takes between four to eight hours, including recovery time. Non-anesthetic pet dental care is less expensive, costing between $179 to $239 depending on the pet’s size, the procedure only takes 45 minutes, there is zero recovery time, no medications are used and prior lab tests are not required. Older and sick pets greatly benefit from non-anesthetic dental cleanings to avoid complications that may arise from the use of anesthesia. HealthySmiles also offers membership plans that enable pets to receive two dental cleanings per year for as low as $25-30 per month. These non-anesthetic dentals also help reduce the risk of bacterial infections such as periodontal disease, which adversely affects a pet’s overall health, causing chronic pain, gum inflammation and, in severe cases, bone loss and organ failure. To avoid these health risks, it is recommended that pets have a deep dental cleaning every six months. Anesthesia-free dental cleanings are best suited for routine dental care, while severe

periodontal disease, complicated fractures, and teeth extractions require the use of sedation and anesthesia to avoid severe pain. Dogs have 42 adult teeth, 4 blunt canines, 12 incisors, 16 premolars and 10 molars. Their teeth need regular deep cleanings to help prevent the progression of plaque and avoid severe periodontitis. The primary bacteria in dogs’ mouths is Capnocytophaga canimorsus which builds up and bothers dogs when left untreated. For cats, regular dental care helps to keep their teeth shiny and their breath fresh, plus it helps prevent dental infections, which can progress from mild to severe in a matter of months. Cats’ mouths have many different kinds of bacteria, giving them a higher risk of periodontal disease than dogs. However, because cat’s 30 adult teeth are significantly smaller than dog teeth, their dental cleanings take less time. “HealthySmiles began as a partnership with other pet providers such as groomers, daycares and vets where we serviced their clients on an ongoing basis,” explains Tarek El Gammal, CEO of HealthySmiles Pet Dental. “However, we noticed significant organic demand for our service, which led us to go direct to consumers. We started doing house calls over the summer before deciding to build brick-and-mortar locations in an effort to continue focusing on fully controlling the pet parent and pet experience. Our Plantation office will be the first among many new HealthySmiles Pet Dental locations throughout Florida and nationwide.”

Roll Your Ankle?

C

hronic ankle instability is a condition characterized by recurring giving way of the outer (lateral) side of the ankle. This can develop over time after repeated ankle sprains, as there may not have been adequate healing and rehabilitation to the connective tissues (ligaments) that are stretched or torn. A repeated turning of the ankle on uneven terrain, persistent discomfort, pain/tenderness, or just unstable feeling of the ankle can be signs of chronic ankle instability. Whether it’s daily walking, standing, or exertional activities you may suffer from this condition. Treatments range from physical therapy, bracing, medications, and even surgery based on the severity of the condition. Surgical treatment for the damaged ligaments includes direct ligament repair, versatile ligament augmentation, and anchoring hardware to the native ligaments of the lateral ankle.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Life Can Change in an Instant

I

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

n 2018, after a string of mass shootings, I first addressed in this column the reality that life does not always go as planned. It was after a shooting in the Delta baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale International Airport where five people were killed. While I did not personally know any of the victims, this event and the Parkland massacre several months later were right in our own backyards. Our entire community watched in shock as horrific details were reported, and we all collectively grieved with the families who lost loved ones. Recent mass killings in Atlanta and Boulder remind us once again that life can change in the blink of an eye. What all of these tragedies and others, whether at a church in Charleston or a country music festival in Las Vegas, have in common is that left behind were devastated families, friends, and communities. People, just living their lives, had no idea their souls would be leaving this earth. We can all agree that life does not always go the way you expect. Plans put off until later, may never happen. Life events often trigger thoughts about your own mortality sooner rather than later. The reality of our COVID-19 world has motivated many to act. As an attorney specializing in wills and trusts, I see firsthand what may happen to a family after an unexpected death. During a very emotional time, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind. The majority of my estate planning practice focuses on helping clients prospectively prepare to take care of their family and assets after they are gone. I offer counsel regarding the best estate plan for their unique needs. As a caring and responsible parent or spouse, there are things you should think about and take care of. Now. Let’s start with your minor children. Have you thought about who will care for them if you are not around? What about financial support? Do you know if you have the right amount, and the right type, of life insurance for your particular family needs? What about college? How will that be paid for? Do you look after or support your parents? What will happen to them if you are not around? Now, think for a moment about what your final wishes for your family might be. How do you want to leave assets to your heirs? Are there charities you wish to support? Who will inherit your business and real estate? There are so many questions to consider. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from tragedy is to always try to live a good life full of kindness and gratitude, and to remember to love and cherish our families and friends every day. The reality is that we do not know what the future holds. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
