Here’s to 2021!

I

t is hard to reflect on the past year without a bit of shock and awe. The year began with Democratic Party presidential candidates debating which health plan is better, while South Florida hosted the NFL’s Super Bowl. The year’s final month will be our ninth consecutive enduring a pandemic. There is uncertainty if the NCAA’s football championship, planned to be played in the same stadium as the Super Bowl, will even allow spectators. To say it has been quite a year is an understatement. More than 250,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 related illnesses, including more than 17,000 Floridians. We have continued a troubling trend away from ideological politics toward conflict-infused, identity politics. As of this writing, firefighters on the west coast continue to battle massive wildfires; COVID-19 infections continue to increase. We mourn the loss of some of America’s most impactful people, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, basketballer Kobe Bryant, actor Chadwick Boseman, singer Kenny Rogers, Jeopardy host Alex Trebek and Miami’s own, Don Shula. Amidst all of this doom and gloom, however, it’s helpful to look forward. Several pharmaceutical companies from across the globe are in the final stages of vaccine clinical trials. New platforms like TicToc have enabled young, creative people access to an audience like never before, and progress to stem the effects of climate change is finally being made. So, this New Year’s Eve, raise a glass of champagne, to the year that was, but to the year that will be. Here is to a better 2021! Sincerely,

Terry & Christy Jaillet Co-Publishers

High School Senior’s Little Free Library Offers the Gift of Reading During the Pandemic By Terry Jaillet

O

ne of the unfortunate consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic has been the closure of Broward County’s public libraries. Gone are the days when an avid reader could spend the afternoon browsing titles to find her perfect next book. Luckily for us, Archbishop Mccarthy High School Senior, Mackenzie Sprimont was here to help.

Mackenzie built a Little Free Library on Flamingo Road between Saint Mark Catholic Church and New Horizon Methodist Church. It is a wonderful free way for people of all ages to find books and help build community by taking or leaving books. Her library celebrated its one-year anniversary on October 31st and is available to anyone in the community. Mackenzie first learned of Little Free Libraries during a trip to visit her grandmother in Belgium. “I have always been a big reader,” commented Mackenzie, “I just finished a book, while visiting my grandmother, and wanted to start another one. That is when I discovered Little Free Libraries.” Mackenzie quickly learned that Little Free Libraries is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. She decided to become involved and opened her own. “I played tennis since I was little. I started to see Little Libraries and book exchanges all the time when I traveled to tournaments. I thought it would be great to have one at home,” explained Mackenzie.

There aren’t many rules for the library. Community members of all ages are invited to take or leave as many books as they like. The only real requirement is for people to be considerate of others. She also asks that people don’t leave anything offensive, adult-oriented, or disrespectful. Mackenzie, who was nominated for the Silver Knight Award, plans on attending College beginning next fall. Like many of her classmates, she is not quite sure which school she will attend but has already made arrangements with her brother Brock to continue supporting the library into the future. Mackenzie was most inspired by seeing the same passion for books in reading in others that she has, “we were promoting the Little Free Library at the Pumpkin Patch and I saw a little boy speaking to his father. He was so excited, exclaiming ‘look, Dad, they’re free! They’re free! BCPS School Choice Applications Accepted Through February 8th By Jon Duka

S

chool-aged children living in Broward County are assigned to a school based on their home address and grade level. Parents can, however, apply for their child to attend a school other than the one their child is assigned school. The period where parents can apply for their child to attend a different school, or the school choice application window, opens on December 1 and will be closed on February 8.

School Choice By state law, students may apply to attend any public school that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine which schools are accepting applications, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reviews enrollment data and projected students. Parents may request a school that is accepting applications by completing a School Choice Application during the application window. School Choice Applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the School Choice process, additional selections from the application pool will be made. There is no guarantee that a child’s application will be granted. How To Apply There are three alternative options available for families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 8.

Parents will be notified if their child was selected on March 11, 2021. If selected, they must contact their child’s new school and enroll by March 19 or that seat will be vacated. If a child’s application was not awarded, parents can apply for another School Choice option or remain in that school’s applicant pool and register the child at his/her assigned school. ■ For more information on Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) School Choice program or apply for an alternate school visit www.browardschools.com/schoolchoice

COMMUNITY NEWS

There’s Snow Place Like Home By Beverly Perkins

B

y this time, everyone is aware that many of the annual end-of-year festivities have been cancelled. Anticipated gatherings, yearly traditions, and photos with Santa have all come to an abrupt halt due to the global pandemic. However, the City of Plantation wants to do their part to bring some holiday cheer into the community and help their residents get in the spirit of the season. Last month, the City announced and opened “There’s Snow Place Like Plantation Snowman Contest”. Although it will not be snowing in our beautiful South Florida hometown, participants are encouraged to use their imagination and create a

three-dimensional winter/holiday scene featuring a snowman/snowwoman and snow. Projects such as these are great for local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, neighbors, and families to come together and not only build something special to showcase in the community, but build different bonds and relationships while preparing for December’s signature holidays. “It definitely isn’t easy getting into the holiday spirit this year, especially during a pandemic with the loss of jobs and so many lives,” states Pamela Baker, Plantation resident and mother of two vicarious elementary school students. “But it’s so nice to see that Plantation’s Parks and Recreation department is giving everyone an opportunity to become involved and celebrate the season.” The creations may be built with any materials and stand on its own by an individual or a group. All submissions will be divided into the following groups: elementary, middle school, and high school students, and groups/families. The only restrictions are that entries must not exceed 5-feet in height or need electricity. The projects may be dropped off with an application at the Plantation Community Center located at 5555 Palm Tree Road in Plantation. The deadline date for display entries is Wednesday,

December 9th, 2020 at 5:00 pm. All entries will be displayed at the Plantation Community Center and then shown and judged on Facebook. Winners will be announced on December 28th, 2020 with prizes awarded to first, second, and third place winners. “At the end of the day we must remember to celebrate life and our wonderful community, and moments like these are worth taking advantage of. We are definitely excited to be putting our creative energies to use,” added Baker. Please note that The City of Plantation does not assume responsibility for damaged or missing artwork and all projects must be picked up By January 4th, 2021, or they risk being disposed by the City. For more information, please call the Plantation Community Center at 954-797-2180

From Tokyo to Broward – Otoro Asian Kitchen Opens in Plantation By Terry Jaillet

S

oon, you won’t have to drive all the way to Miami to enjoy the best Sushi in South Florida. In fact, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful, fine-dining experience with the freshest fish and tastiest creations right in the heart of Broward County. Renowned Executive Chef Jimmy-San is joining his son-in-law, Chef Choum-San, to launch Otoro Sushi & Asian Kitchen located at The Shops at One Plantation on University Drive. The restaurant will open this month, just in time for the holidays. Its menu features exotic creations that Chef Jimmy-San has developed during his 30+ year culinary career. They will also include classic Asian cuisine dishes. Chef Jimmy-San began his culinary career in Atlanta during the 1990s. He quickly moved up the culinary ladder becoming the Executive Chef at some of Atlanta’s most renowned restaurants, including popular hot spots Twist and Prime. During that time he perfected his modern approach to the ancient Japanese art of sushi. Chef Jimmy-San will be joined at Otoro by his son-in-law, Chef Choum-San. Chef Choum-San began his training under Jimmy-San 12 years ago. He has a passion for integrating eons-old traditional sushi techniques into modern cuisine. The father-son team will offer one-of-a-kind creations to diners. As soon as you step foot in the restaurant, your eyes will be drawn to an impressive, back-lit mountain landscape on the back wall of the main room. Between the beautiful,

20-foot wide scene and the dining room is the space where the sushi masters do their work. A long, beautiful sushi counter, made from exotic wood, welcomes diners to have a seat. When you visit Otoro, be sure to order “omakase”. Omakase translates to “I’ll leave it up to you” in Japanese. According to the Michelin Guide, there are “few dining experiences more revered” in the world. Omakase is best experienced at the sushi counter, where you can immerse yourself in the experience. Chef Jimmy-San or Chef Choum-San will prepare one piece of fish at a time, describe its origin, and answer any questions you might have about the dish. You will marvel at the precision of their work, the incredible concentration, and the beauty of their knife work. An omakase meal is a multi-sensory, almost spiritual, experience. The chef will offer the perfect piece of fish for the season and is guided by his guests’ reactions. The presentation of each course is as visually stunning as the taste. Otoro also offers sake tastings to accompany the fish. The elegant dining experience is perfect for a date. Otoro also offers a number of popular Asian dishes and traditional sushi offerings. They will be open for lunch and dinner and are celebrating their grand opening just in time for Christmas. ■ Otoro is located in The Shops at One Plantation at 1447 S University Drive. They are open Sunday through Thursday from 11 am till 10 pm and Friday & Saturday from 11 am till 11 pm. To make reservations or learn more visit www.otorosushibar.com or stop in to try a bite.

FROM TEE TO GREEN

How Well Do You Practice Your Putting? By Dean Sklar, PG

T

he next time you’re on the putting green, try these simple practice drills that will help you become a better putter: 1.  Place a golf ball about five to six feet from the hole, then put two tees in the ground, approximately eight to ten inches behind the ball. Place them a little farther apart than the length of your putter head. Make sure they are directly on the target line you intend to putt the ball.   This drill is intended to have you swing the putter straight back away from the ball. If you strike either tee on your back stroke, your backswing path is offline. When you can swing the putter head back and forth between the tees, you will know that the putter is moving along the correct path, ensuring you will make solid contact every time. This path is vital, because it helps start your ball on its intended target line. 2.  Next, I encourage golfers to hold the finish of their putting stroke until they hear the ball fall-

24 DECEMBER 2020 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

ing into the hole. This drill is effective in training your head and body to stay still over a putt while also helping you maintain the putter face on line throughout your stroke. Finally, your focus on the follow-through will keep your mind off missing the putt.   As I watch golfers struggle with putting, I notice many have trouble with distance control. This problem relates to feel. 3.  A good drill to increase feel and improve your distance control is to practice putting with one hand. Start by placing the ball eight to ten feet from the cup, and hit a few putts with just your right hand. Next, repeat the putt just using your left hand.   By now you should notice which hand gives you better control of the putter. From then on, practice your one-hand drill mostly with the dominate hand. 4.  Another great tip is a drill I learned from an instructor I had as a junior golfer at a golf camp. He told me that whenever he lines up for a putt and addresses the ball he looks at the hole and makes about two or three practice strokes just staring at

the hole only and not the ball. This allows him to feel the distance, so when you get up to make your actual stroke you now have a good idea how far the distance is to the hole without walking up to address the ball without feel. It really works and I have been applying this method of feeling the distance for decades. You will not be knocking the ball past the hole as in the past and as if you had a few practice putts at the hole. This drill will have you feel much more comfortable and confident over putts, improving your distance control, thus giving you a more confident stroke. It’s always a great idea to practice these tips prior to teeing off if you have time or try and split up your time on the driving range and mix in a few of these drills.. ■ PGA Professional Dean Sklar is a member of the Quarter Century Club of the PGA of America, an elite group of members who have served the PGA with honor and pride for 25 years. Broward College students are “food insecure,” meaning “This program has been an evolution. The initial they do not have reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Many of the students have no or goal was to establish a pantry,” said Esmeralda Sweeney, Broward College’s Associate Vice President, Student Success, low income and enrolled in the school as a pathway out of poverty. Fortunately for them, the Student Success Team is “Now, we see even more dier need. Our students have been hit really hard.” looking out for them. Demand for the donations has been incredibly strong. The program was oversubscribed within 24 hours of its launch on September 25th. Homeless students were given a priority. Broward College serves about 50,000 students at its three campuses in Coconut Creek, Davie and Pembroke Pines. The school’s student has a diverse student body. More than half are first-generation Americans while many come from low-income families. Each bag typically contains two pounds of rice, two cans of tomato sauce, two boxes of macaroni and cheese, split peas, mayonnaise, two cans of chicken noodle soup, two cans of tuna, pasta, two cans of green beans, oatmeal, juice, and milk. Sometimes additional items are added such as peanut butter, oil, or applesauce.

Studies have shown that students with access to quality, nutritious food are more likely to graduate. Providing students with basic necessities allows them to focus on their studies rather than where they will get their next meal. The drive-through even provided students and their families with turkey dinners over the Thanksgiving Break. Cooper City Elementary Gives TooJay’s Deli an A+ By Beverly Perkins

A

s a result of the ongoing pandemic, it has not been easy settling into a new reality with new routines across the globe. This has been especially prevalent for those in our educational system. Teachers, parents, and students alike have been struggling for months learning virtually and getting accustomed to new standards and new responsibilities. Regardless if inside or outside the classroom, the process of learning virtually has been frustrating, to say the least, for everyone of all ages and all grades.

Stephen Levin, TooJay’s Director of Sales delivering dessert platters to the faculty and staff at Cooper City Elementary

Furthermore, becoming dependent on the internet has been another challenging factor. However, on the bright side, the Coronavirus has shed the light on the importance of teachers and how essential they are to students and their parents during these difficult times. TooJay’s Deli recognized this positive truth and wanted to say, “thank you” to all those who have gone above and beyond. The award-winning restaurant chose to express their gratitude and appreciation to these hard-working educators. “Teachers are such an important part of communities, as they help shape future generations,” said Max Piet, President and CEO of TooJay’s Deli. “We thought there was no better way to show our appreciation than sharing our delicious desserts. On behalf of the TooJay’s team, we thank all teachers for their passion and commitment towards ensuring our kids’ success during these uncertain times.” In late October, TooJay’s Deli treated Cooper City Elementary with their traditional dessert platters on National Dessert Day. The Broward County school faculty and staff were thrilled to receive such a surprise

delivery filled with delicious treats such as rugalach, brownies, Tollhouse squares, black & white cookies, and macaroons garnished with strawberries. “It was such a pleasure to have a sweet treat from TooJays for our staff members. During these difficult times, giving back to our staff is our little way of saying ‘Thank You’ for the hard work they do. As a Principal, it makes me happy to give back to my employees. Partnerships, such as TooJays, play a pivotal role now more than ever in sustaining the positive climate of our school,” added Monica Schlosser, Principal, Cooper City Elementary School.

Leading the Way: Dr. Scott Denny and Dr. Justine Denny of Integrative Hospital Associates Pioneer Treatments for a Healthier Life By Terry Jaillet

D

r. Scott Denny has been helping people with chronic pain get well for over 35 years. In 2007, he took the position of head of acupuncture services at Holy Cross Hospital’s Feldman Center for Optimal Health. Dr. Denny’s practice has always provided unique natural medical services to help patients with chronic illness or chronic pain. One example is their first pain practice in South Florida to offer Robotic MLS Laser Therapy going back to 2010. MLS Laser Therapy Multiwave Locked System (MLS) Laser Therapy was developed in an effort to produce an efficient and simultaneous effect on pain, inflammation, and edema, exceeding the limits of traditional LLLT (low power) and concerns of HP (high power) laser therapy.

MLS uses specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating muscle, bone and joint conditions. Light energy enters the damaged cells and stimulates inter-cellular activity. This reduces pain in the area of injury and speeds recovery of the damaged cells. It is one of the most efficient forms of therapy for the treatment of these types of conditions. Expanded Office Location Integrative Hospital Associates recently expanded its practice services to a new larger office located in the Atrium Center Plaza on University Drive in Davie. Dr. Denny is also pleased to announce that his daughter, Justine Denny, DNP, a double board-certified holistic and family nurse practitioner has joined the practice to head-up this major expansion of services. Dr. Denny is trained in many disciplines including chiropractic, East Asian medicine, and electromedicine. The practice provides many services including acupuncture, effective treatments for sports injuries as well as any type of accident or injury. He also provides ozone injection therapy, natural pain medicine injections, herbal medicine, bioenergetics testing, weight loss programs, vitamin injections, and much more. Dr. Justine Denny Dr. Justine Denny specializes in holistic services such as vitamin IV therapy, intravenous ozone therapy,

ultraviolet blood irradiation, regenerative medicine, allergy testing and allergy immunotherapy, blood-based nutritional analysis, and many other treatment services which have never been available in practice until now. With the additional scope of services, more patients can benefit from this unique integrated medical approach. This will allow a patient to feel better faster, need less medication, and significantly improve their quality of life. This comprehensive approach is simply unavailable in most clinics. Most practices offer one or maybe two types of services and most do not have a collaborative approach to maximize patient treatment results. Drs. Scott and Justine Denny offer a complimentary consultation, so stop suffering alone and let me the team of integrative Hospital Associates get you back on track. To schedule an appointment or learn more about Integrative Hospital Associates call (954) 473-8925 or visit www.DennyHealth.com

ASK THE EXPERTS

The Elusive Stress Fracture in the Runner By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS

N

othing is

more frustrating to a runner than an injury which occurs just when the training schedule calls for ramping up mileage or intensity in time for competition. During my 35 years as a foot and ankle specialist treating runners in our community, I have personally witnessed not just the physical, but the emotional toll these injuries can inflict, and can truly empathize with them as I myself have fallen victim to these same unfortunate circumstances, and on multiple occasions. As runners we forget that our sport is not a passive but violent one, as each foot strike results in an impact equivalent to 3 or 4 times our body weight. To put it bluntly, training is a form of self-inflicted injury with the hopes that the ongoing cycle of injury and healing will ultimately lead to stronger muscles, tendons and bones after recovery. This is a positive and most desirable outcome which we refer to as "conditioning". Unfortunately training exuberance tips the balance in favor of injury, sometimes with the best intentions of the coach, family or athlete and leads to the body’s inability to perform. This is when breakdown (injury) occurs resulting in a concept I call "reverse conditioning" secondary to overtraining. One such common overuse running injury is referred to as a stress reaction which in later stages develops into a stress fracture. Most athletes with a stress reaction present with an insidious onset of pain in a focal area sometimes confused with muscle soreness or tendinitis. Stress reactions and stress fractures represent fatigue failure injuries and are secondary to overuse. A stress reaction precedes a stress fracture in the bone fatigue continuum and is hallmarked by microscopic failure without an actual visible break in the bone. X-rays are typically negative in this stage of

38 DECEMBER 2020 | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

injury and better imaged with bone scans or MRI. The MRI is a very sensitive imaging technique which depicts swelling in bone at this early stage. As the fracture continues to develop, heat, swelling and pain are noticed during everyday activities. In severe cases the pain eventually precludes comfortable weight bearing and physical exercise causing the athlete to limp. Stress on bone creates constant remodeling affecting a balance between the cells which eliminate injured bone (like tiny vacuum cleaners) and cells which replace injured bone with newer healthier bone. Overtraining, either by adding mileage, speed or inclines will tilt the balance in favor of the cells evacuating injured bone. This ultimately results in a negative balance of healthy bone cells progressing to stress injury. Adding insult to injury, weak muscles in the thigh and leg supporting the bone structure by absorbing shock may further stress the physiologic capacity of bone to maintain its integrity causing it to fatigue. This is not unlike bending a paper clip back and forth until heat develops causing the metal wire to fatigue until it snaps into two segments. Stress fractures are very similar as the continued stress of training results in fatigue failure of bone, leading to microscopic cracks and subsequent true fracture if allowed to continue. It is during these late stages of the process that X-rays become a more reliable tool.

Not All Stress Fractures Are The Same

Stress fractures are generally classified into two types: low risk fractures- those that heal well and usually without long term sequelae and high-risk fractures - those which do not heal well and often require surgery. The designation of these two classification systems are essentially based on the location of these fractures. Bone stress injury treatment and return to play decision making is based on the site of injury, potential for healing and risk of significant complication. Proper treatment of the fracture is essential to avoid under -or over treating the condition. Clearly over treating the fracture may

result in an unnecessary disruption of training and subsequent loss of physical conditioning referred to as "deconditioning". Stress fractures deemed as high risk pose a significant risk for recurrence due to inadequate healing and at times may result in potentially devastating complications leading to career ending injuries. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is fundamental in allowing proper healing thereby minimizing the impact of the injury.

Treatment

Treatment for stress fractures should not focus on boney healing but should include an investigation of what we refer to as the intrinsic and extrinsic causes which resulted in the injury in the first place. Intrinsic factors include 1. Biomechanicalbody type, foot type, inherent weakness and flexibility, and a factor many gloss over- running technique, 2. Nutritional specifically insufficient intake of protein, calcium and vitamin D 3. Hormonal factors- the most notable of which is estrogen. Female athletes with low bone mass have a higher predilection for certain stress fractures. This is especially noted in women at risk. This includes those with low body mass, or have stopped menstruating and/or have a history or family history of osteoporosis. This group will require a proper medical workup consisting of blood tests and a bone density scan often requiring a team approach with various specialists. Extrinsic factors on the other hand consist of training errors and improper equipment. This includes but is not limited to the influences of terrain, running form and improper running shoes. To be effective, an individualized developmental plan for an effective return to play schedule should take these factors into consideration. The strategy, particularly when dealing with low risk fractures, may require decreasing training volume and intensity, using proper equipment, changing running technique, and cross training. Using this tactic assures that the athlete does not suffer a substantial loss of

conditioning while recovering from injury. Sports medicine physicians realize all too well that extended time off training may adversely affect the recovery. Recouping the body’s strength, flexibility and ability to balance is significantly hindered with overprotective measures and results in an extended loss of training time. So why create a problem in order to solve one? With a proper rehabilitation plan, the athlete is given the best chance for a faster recovery while resulting in a protective effect from future injury. Alternatively, high risk stress fractures as previously mentioned have more frequent complications such as poor healing, non-healing, and at times re-fracturing after healing is thought to have been completed. These are very frustrating scenarios which unfortunately often leads the athlete to abandon the sport. The treatment for high risk stress fractures should be based on the immediate goal of preventing any progression of the fracture and avoiding long-term complications. Because of the significant complications associated with this injury, it is suggested that athletes with evidence of a high-risk stress fracture immediately discontinue their activity. Unfortunately, with these fractures, prolonged immobilization with weight bearing restrictions or operative management are often the treatments of choice. So, remember to listen to those nagging injuries and avoid reverse conditioning. Make sure that you heed the signs of injury before the injury heeds you. ■ Dr. Cohen is a published author, is on faculty at several

South Florida residency programs, podiatric medical colleges and frequent lecturer. He is a former runner with a marathon PR of 2:37 at age 21; 2:50 at age 39 and at 50 was a top 3 age group finisher in both the ING Miami and Disney Half Marathons. Wright Cartiva By Dr. Warren Windram D.P.M. Foot and Ankle Surgeon

C

ARTIVA® SCI Keeps you Moving The big toe joint holds up to 100% of your weight every time you step. That pressure can cause the cartilage in the joint to wear down, leading to painful big toe arthritis. The good news? There are treatment options that can help you move again. CARTIVA® SCI is a quick 35-minute procedure where your physician replaces the damaged cartilage in your big toe with a new synthetic cartilage that behaves like the natural cartilage of your big toe joint. It’s the only FDA approved option that safely and effectively reduces arthritis pain while also improving your toe’s range of motion.

Movement Matters Your big toe joint is uniquely designed for movement and provides most of the force needed for walking and running. Unlike fusion surgery, which locks the joint in place, CARTIVA® Synthetic Cartilage Implant (SCI) reduces pain while also allowing your joint to move how it’s supposed to. Implanting CARTIVA® SCI is also 40% faster than the alternative fusion surgery. No casts or crutches, recovery is

smooth and patients can typically bear weight immediately after receiving CARTIVA® SCI. CARTIVA® SCI is proven to provide long-term pain reduction and increased foot mobility, with 97% reduction in pain demonstrated at almost six years post procedure

CARTIVA® SCI Procedure WHAT WILL HAPPEN BEFORE SURGERY? Your doctor will give you instructions prior to your surgery. You should follow these instructions the day before the operation. This surgery usually occurs without an overnight stay in the hospital. The procedure usually lasts about 25 minutes.

What Will Happen During Surgery? The CARTIVA SCI goes through a small cut in the top of your toe. Once you have been given anesthesia and are asleep in the operating room, the procedure will begin. First, your doctor will make a small (about 2 inch) cut in the skin over the top of your big toe joint. This will open the joint of your big toe. Then, the doctor will use special tools to remove the necessary amount of bone to make a hole for the implant. Your doctor will then place the CARTIVA implant into the hole in your bone joint, providing a smooth, slippery, load-bearing surface. The implant stays in place

without the use of cement or glue. Once in place, your doctor will close the cut in your toe with sutures, apply any dressings and finish the operation.

What Can I Expect After Surgery? Ask your doctor about what will help you recover from surgery. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. You may begin putting weight on your toe as soon as you feel ready. You should begin exercises that move your joint immediately following surgery. You may need the help of a physical therapist to help you walk smoothly and without limping during your recovery. You should see your doctor to check on your progress after surgery.

Dr. Windram specializes in foot & ankle reconstructive/trauma surgery, with a particular interest in total ankle joint replacement surgery. He has always been involved with podiatric surgical training, working as the podiatric surgical residency director at Memorial Health Care System. Dr. Windram is the current director of the Foot and Ankle Fellowship program at Westside Regional Medical Center and a clinical instructor at Westside and Memorial Health Care System’s podiatric surgical residency programs. o you have an old piece of jewelry around the house? Maybe it’s a broken bracelet or a ring you just don’t wear anymore. For many of us, those items simply sit in a drawer or a safe, collecting dust, never to be worn or seen again. That is where the folks at GoldFellow can help! GoldFellow will purchase unwanted gold, platinum, silver and diamond jewelry at very competitive prices. The company was founded by Robin and Michael Gusky. The couple previously owned one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of karat gold jewelry in the United States for 30 years before selling to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in 2007. They’ve taken that vast experience to create a firm you can trust. We sat down with the company founder, Michael, to learn more. Tell us about GoldFellow We purchase consumers’ unwanted gold, platinum, silver, and diamond jewelry at very competitive prices. We also purchase fine Swiss timepieces such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Cartier. We have been in business since 2008. We are proud to have earned an A+ rating. How does the process work? At GoldFellow, the process is totally transparent. Your items are tested right in front of you, using XRF x-ray technology, which shows the exact amount of precious metals it contains. The testing takes less than 10 seconds! Based on that reading and the weight of the item, we make you an offer on the spot. HOLIDAY TIME SHARING

AWARDED 10 YEARS

By Evan H. Baron, Esq.

M

ost people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year, is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule. Last minute issues will usually not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any such concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any timesharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day”. As an example, in odd numbered years such as 2015 perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Oftentimes the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget.

ASK THE EXPERT

Payroll Protection Program Tax & Accounting Implications By Jay Shapiro, CPA

T

he PPP was born in a flash — the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and Treasury launched the program in only a week — and forged in a flurry of interim final rules and frequently asked questions (FAQs). That guidance often raised more questions, and many small businesses relied on CPAs to help chart a safe path through the chaos. The program stopped accepting new applications on Aug. 8 after funding more than 5.2 million loans for a total of $525 billion. Nearly two months later, small businesses that received PPP funding rely heavily on accountants to guide them through seeking forgiveness for the loans while keeping an eye on potential additional funding from the federal government. Borrowers who wish to apply for forgiveness and release the burden of their PPP loan are pressuring CPAs to help them move forward with the process. But, as has been the case since the beginning, much uncertainly still surrounds the PPP. Two of the biggest areas of uncertainty remaining with PPP forgiveness are the following: Deductibility of expenses Forgiven PPP loans are not taxable income, but the IRS declared that no tax deduction is allowed for an expense that is otherwise deductible if the payment of the expense results in forgiveness of a PPP-covered loan. The position is that allowing the deductibility of expenses paid with PPP funds would result in a double-dipping scenario. Given the severity of the pandemic’s impact on U.S. businesses, the tax professionals believe that Congress intended PPP expenses to be deductible. Lawmakers from both parties have voiced support for this position, but that has not yet translated into congressional action.

Blanket forgiveness Most PPP loans were for $150,000 or less. Because the PPP loan forgiveness process can be tedious, members of Congress have proposed legislation that would allow for a much simpler process of streamlined forgiveness for loans under a certain amount. The commonly discussed threshold is loans of $150,000 and below, but that could change, and there’s a possibility that blanket forgiveness won’t ever be granted. In an ideal scenario, borrowers won’t file for loan forgiveness until the questions surrounding tax-deductibility and automatic forgiveness are resolved. Of course, we have no idea when that will be, which leads us to… PPP loan forgiveness Borrowers eager to get PPP loans forgiven may want to know the deadline for forgiveness applications and whether they can submit applications early. If they are a co-owner in the company where they work, they may also want to know if they are subject to the stricter PPP compensation replacement calculations for owner-employees. Forgiveness application due date There is no defined deadline for borrowers submitting the forgiveness application, but borrower payments will be required 10 months after the end of the covered period as explained in FAQ No. 3 of the PPP Loan Forgiveness FAQs. Early applications for loan forgiveness are permitted, but there’s a catch: An eight- or 24-week covered period will still apply. The PPP Flexibility Act, P.L. 116-142, signed into law June 5 extended the covered period from eight weeks to 24 weeks. For loans funded before June 5, 2020, borrowers can choose to keep the eight-week covered period or move to the 24-week period. If the loan was funded after June 5, 2020, the borrower must use a 24-week covered period. ■ Jay Shapiro is a Certified Public Accountant with offices at 1950 N Commerce Parkway, Suite 5, Weston, FL. Your 2021 Resolutions By Bruce Iden, Esquire

A

s 2020 thankfully comes to a close, we naturally begin to think ahead to resolutions intended to change habits, improve our health or make things better for ourselves and our families. Resolutions are simply promises we make to ourselves. Perhaps your new year’s resolutions include walking 10,000+ steps each day, eating a cleaner diet or learning to meditate. Whatever your resolutions may be, consider adding to your list an important one: protecting your loved ones. Let’s look at some basic questions and see if you can answer the following: ▸  Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed? ▸  After I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the debts, taxes and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I created a way to reach important family and financial goals? ▸  Who will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me? ▸  Who will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care? ▸  When and how will my spouse, children and other loved ones receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment but protects against creditors, predators or their own possible fiscal mismanagement? Thinking about these matters can be absolutely overwhelming. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise these tough questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. Fortunately, there are many qualified attorneys in the area. Speak to several. Do your research. Ask questions. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! Please also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances and the law may make the revision and updating of your estate plan essential.Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? ■ Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years.
