“My Mother can’t wait for this year to end… but not for the reason you think.”
It’s because she can finally move in to the new Palace in January! “She can’t wait to leave that big, lonely house and get to a warm and safe place, where she’s part of a community of neighbors like her, doing all the things she loves to do. We feel great about the luxury and comfort of the new Palace at Weston Senior Living. But right now what we love most is the careful, intelligent way they have set up their programs to meet or exceed every standard for health safety. We’ve talked to their team members, we’ve seen how they are trained, and our entire family has peace of mind with Mom living there. I tell all my friends who have older parents like me… go see the Palace at Weston. Their Leasing Center and models are fabulous.”
Call the Leasing Center today and schedule your personal visit.

Dear Neighbors, With a challenging year now behind us, we look to 2021 as a fresh start and as a reset button. From us here at The Bobby Auerbach Group to you, we are wishing you a healthy, happy, peaceful New Year. outh Florida is a great place to live. This idea is something that most people reading this magazine already believe. It is, however, something that many people from other parts of the country are just now discovering. Financial firm Goldman Sachs is the latest major New York employer rumored to be moving one of its largest divisions here. According to multiple sources, almost 1,000 people move to Florida each day, with about half of them coming to South Florida. Our combination of natural resources, a less expensive lifestyle, and no income tax has served as a magnet for people and employers from around the county. This trend has only accelerated during the pandemic. We are excited. Our new neighbors will bring new perspectives, more financial resources, and add to our collective culture. They will also help us more quickly pull out of the financial and public health crises we are facing. So, if a new neighbor from “up north” moves in on your street, stop by, say hello, and give them a warm welcome! Sincerely,
Terry & Christy Jaillet

ROYAL PALM REALTY
Weston’s Neighborhood Real Estate Brokerage By: Terry Jaillet
W
endy Newman-Scheppke has been raising her family and selling real estate in Weston since her kids were babies. Her daughter is now deciding which colleges she wants to apply to, and Wendy is managing a team of professionals at the brokerage she founded, Royal Palm Realty of South Florida. One thing Wendy learned along the way was to focus on her clients’ well-being above all else. In fact, it is what led her to start Royal Palm Realty. “When I worked at a large, national firm, I felt like I was sitting in a room full of competitors,” commented Wendy, “I didn’t want that. I wanted to be part of a team where everyone is supportive of each other and works toward a common goal. At Royal Palm Realty, we collaborate and support each other t o the benefit of our clients.”
Royal Palm Realty
The brokerage Scheppke founded offers all of the services and technology that larger firms offer. Clients’ homes are marketed on multiple websites, including Zillow and realtor.com, as well as, on all social media platforms. They have a full suite of service providers like title companies, attorneys, home inspectors, and contractors. What continuously sets Royal Palm Realty apart from other firms is their focus on putting
their clients’ needs first. “We want our clients to have an extraordinary experience, regardless of a property’s price point. Our clients become clients for life,” commented Scheppke, “We strive to help them in any way we can, even long after their transaction is complete.” Royal Palms Realty’s Lifestyle Concierge Service exemplifies this focus on their clients. The team provides homeowners with recommendations, referrals, and advice on an extensive range of topics. The fact that many of the team members live, work and are immersed in Weston makes them even more helpful. “I get calls months, even years after a transaction. People ask, ‘should I redo my kitchen’ or ‘can you refer a good electrician’ but also things not related to real estate at all like ‘do you know an emergency vet?” Wendy pointed out, “We are always there to help.’”
Real Estate Team
The team at Royal Palm Realty brings a broad array of backgrounds and skills that are difficult to duplicate. One trait that runs through them all is the desire to go above and beyond for their clients. This type of service has become even more critical during the pandemic. In fact, Senior Sales Associate Holly Lick toured
homes while on a video call with out-oftown clients. Holly, a native of Savannah, Georgia, had her southern charm shine through as she went from house to house. In the end, the clients found their new home before they even arrived. Mariana Fontanarrosa continuously works with clients who are out of the country to purchase, sell, and rent their properties. The associates at Royal Palm Realty are their clients’ boots on the ground in a time when moves need to happen and travel is difficult. The Royal Palm Realty team also has certified Military Relocation Professionals (MRP) and associates fluent in multiple languages, including Spanish and Portuguese. They can bring local buyers, out of state buyers, and international buyers to any Weston property.
Sellers Market
With interest rates at record lows, Florida’s attractive tax status, and almost 1,000 people moving to Florida a day, there may be no better time to sell a home than now. If you are thinking about selling, you should reach out to a team with years of experience, an unparalleled connection to the Weston community, superior customer service, and seasoned negotiators to work on your behalf. There is no one better to sell your home than your own Weston neighbors!

aricose veins are not just a cosmetic problem. They can make your legs ache, burn, throb, itch, and cramp. Untreated varicose veins tend to get worse over time. Fox, D.O., RPVI, FSVM is board certified in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and is a vein and laser expert. She, and her team, have successfully performed tens of thousands of vein and laser procedures. She has lectured across the county, even developing her own procedures and techniques. Fox Vein and Laser Experts have received numerous awards, including the 2019 Best of Weston and the 2018 Our City Readers’ Choice awards. Dr. Fox has also been featured on American and Latin America television programs as a vein expert. She has been practicing medicine for more than 20 years. We sat down with Dr. Fox to learn more about the practice. Tell us about your practice. We are a premier vein and laser treatment center in Broward County, with locations in Pembroke Pines and Hollywood. We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of venous
disease as well as offering several minimally invasive treatments, using our state-of-the-art laser equipment, to treat other issues. We are one of the only providers in South Florida with the PicoWay® laser. This allow us to remove unwanted tattoos and skin discolorations more effectively and more quickly than other methods. With tens of thousands of successful procedures, we have the experience to remove or reduce spider and varicose veins. We help our patients reduce swelling, aching and discomfort. Our medical team evaluates each patient’s individual condition and helps them determine Before which treatment is right for them. We accept most medical insurance plans for medically necessary procedures and offer payment options for cosmetic procedures. After What makes your practice different from others? We are experienced experts in treating vascular disease and skin treatments. In fact, Fox Vein and Laser Experts is a training facility for vein procedures. I have successfully taught physicians and medical personnel in the treatment of venous disease and the use of lasers for over a decade. I was one of the first doctors in the country to perform endovenous laser ablation and I have performed thousands of successful endogenous laser ablations for over a decade. I was the first physician in Broward County to perform the ClariVein® procedure and one of the first in the U.S. to
offer this treatment. In short, we are very experienced at what we do. Our patients’ health and the success of the procedure are our priority. What is Vein Disease? Vein disease is a disorder that occurs when vein valves stop functioning correctly. Normally, the vein valves keep blood moving back toward the heart. When the valves stop functioning properly, some blood will drip slowly downward, causing it to collect in the legs and ankles. Over time, this can lead to spider veins, varicose veins, phlebitis, blood clots and changes in the skin. According to studies, more than ¼ of American adults have some form of venous disease in their legs. Left untreated, you may notice more discolored veins in your legs, or your ankles becoming swollen and turning brown or blue. If you are noticing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to call our office for a consultation. Do You offer Hair Removal? Yes! In addition to being an effective tool for treating spider veins and sunspots, our GentleMax Pro® laser is incredibly effective at hair removal. Laser hair removal is one of the most convenient and long-lasting ways to eliminate unwanted hair. This machine delivers direct bursts of laser energy to the skin, passing through its uppermost layers and targeting follicles. As the follicles absorb this energy, they will rupture. After the follicle has ruptured, it is no longer able to produce hair. Over a series of treatments, all of the follicles in an area will be ruptured, halting hair growth and leaving the surface of the skin smooth and hair-free. The GentleMax Pro® laser is so quick and effective, it decreases the number of treatments patients need. Typically, between four
& Treatment of ser Procedures and six sessions over a 12-month period are necessary to achieve dramatic hair loss results. You mentioned tattoo removal, tell us more. Tattoos can be a fun, creative way for people to express themselves. However, sometimes, people regret getting these permanent works of art – that’s why we’re proud to offer our patients access to the gold standard of laser tattoo remove technology – The PicoWay® Laser. Older tattoo removal treatments tend to cause patients extreme discomfort, are often risky for

people with darker skin tones and commonly are not as effective on colorful or dark tattoos. PicoWay® tattoo removal can remove tattoos with a wide variety of pigments and on patients of all skin types, faster, more effectively and with less pain than traditional tattoo removal methods. Older laser treatments use concentrated laser energy delivered in a consistent beam to break up tattoo pigmentation. These treatments can be somewhat effective in breaking up tattoos but often small bits of pigmentation are left behind. The treatments can also be quite difficult for some patients
to tolerate. The PicoWay® laser uses short bursts of laser energy to break up pigmentation. These short bursts are more effective and less painful than traditional laser treatments. Can PicoWay® be used for scar removal as well? Yes, the PicoWay® laser is also quite effective at removing or reducing scars. Because the laser uses short, intense bursts of light, treatment times are significantly shorter than other laser-based scar revision procedures. Patients typically experience little to no downtime following a treatment session as well. What other procedures to you offer? We now offer the Vivace™ Microneedle treatment. This, FDA approved, minimally invasive treatment stimulates the natural production of collagen and is shown to be effective in alleviating facial wrinkles, fine lines, and tightening and toning the face, neck, hands and body. This procedure is quick, does not hurt and has virtually no recovery time. How can patients make an appointment? Patients can make an appointment at either of our locations by calling 954-627-1045 or by visiting our website www. FoxVeinExperts.com

HEALTHCARE HERO
FP&L Recognizes Local Nurse as ‘Healthcare Hero’
M
iriam Perez finished working her shift as an Urgent Care Nurse at Jackson Health. Like a typical Friday, she hopped in her car and headed home. Only, Friday, December 11, was anything but ordinary for her. The mother of two had received several mysterious deliveries over the past week. As she pulled up to her house, it was clear that she and her family would, indeed, have a very Merry Christmas. Somebody placed an oversized “Happy Holidays” in her front yard. When Miriam walked inside the house, things began to make sense. Mariem was selected as
Healthcare Hero by Florida Power & Light Company in conjunction with The Jackson Health System. In addition to the cheer-inducing yard sign, Miriam also received several gifts, including energy-saving items like thermostats and LED light bulbs. She also received a sizable gift card that will cover the cost of almost all of her family’s presents this year. “I was in the ER, working throughout the pandemic, and recently moved to the Urgent Care,” said Miriam, “We had been getting cryptic packages for about a week. This was such a wonderful surprise.” Miriam has two children, nine and eleven. Thankfully, her family has remained COVID-free during the pandemic, which was extremely important because her youngest daughter has a
compromised immune system making her especially at-risk for COVID-19. The fact that she has continued to work with COVID patients is a testament to her selflessness and is an example of how indebted we all are to healthcare workers. Happy holidays to every nurse, technician, orderly, and physician. Next time you see Miriam or someone you don’t know wearing scrubs at the grocery store. Tell them thanks from a grateful community.

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL
One Track Mind By Beverly Perkins
W
hen he is not helping people repair their credit, qualify for homes, or find employment, one will always find Weston resident Antwon Chaney off and running (literally) to mentor teens. The business professional and athletic coach is always giving back especially to the youth in multiple communities. His goal is to help others achieve their goals. “Everything I didn’t have growing up, I want today’s kids to have. For years, I sat on the sidelines and watched no one create anything, so I had to. If I feel a door could be open, I want to provide a platform and open that door for an opportunity to give to others,” explained Chaney. Many around town, parents and students alike,
affectionately call him Coach ‘Twon. The Miami native grew up in the intercity of Dade County and has been living in Weston for well over a decade. The inspiring individual played arena football for the Cincinnati Marshalls and the Tupelo FireAnts in Mississippi before going on to be the Special Assistant Coach to the Head Coach for the Alabama State University football team. Additionally, he personally coached and trained almost a dozen NFL athletes. But in the spring of 2016, he returned home to South Florida with a desire to continue to give back to the community. He began coaching at Cypress Bay High School (CBHS) and inspired many athletes to take their love of track to the next level. After creating West Express and West Express Elite track teams, he teamed up with Ina Lucchese, a parent of one of his students to become a part of Body & Soul Youth Development Center. The non-profit 501(c) (3) organization was created to help teens
achieve mental and behavioral wellness through holistic practices, love, and a sense of belonging. With his extensive history of supporting and coaching youth to be their best on and off the field, it was a natural fit for Chaney to be the center’s fitness expert. He recently assisted with the center’s turkey and bicycle giveaways and has quite a few big plans for a series of activities for more youth involvement within various communities. “It’s my passion to reach out and give a helping hand to expand these kids’ horizons. When it comes to youth, I just want the opportunity to fill the cracks, so they don’t fall through them. I want to bring kids together in sports, in charitable work, and any other way possible,” added Chaney.

Island SPACE Caribbean Museum Brings Island Life to Broward County By Jon Duka

he United States’ first museum dedicated to Caribbean life, culture and history just opened its doors at the Westfield Mall in Plantation. Island SPACE Caribbean Museumis a museum, exhibition, and event facility in Plantation, Florida featuring a collection of artifacts, iconic paraphernalia, cultural relics, and historical data representing South Florida’s Caribbean communities. The project fulfills the need to create a unified space for exploring and celebrating the ancestry, heritage, and common traditions shared by Caribbean nations.
Within the facility, exhibits, archives and artifacts from around the Caribbean tell the stories of the region’s robust and colorful history, while emphasizing and highlighting contributions to U.S. culture and economy. Visitors will enjoy the gallery’s display of fine Caribbean art and are encouraged to consider hosting their own small cultural events, meetings, and activities at the centrally located museum. “This museum is for the people of the

Caribbean, whether you live in the Caribbean today, or you live outside of the Caribbean,” said David Muir, President of Island Space, “this is the celebration of all of our history. From indigenous people, through colonialism to slavery, unfortunately, to emancipation to independence.” Broward County is the perfect home for the new museum. There are large, thriving communities from almost every island and nation in the Caribbean, it makes perfect sense to be home the a museum that celebrates them all. The opening of the Island Space Museum is the latest accomplishment of Island SPACE (Island Society for the Promotion of Artistic and Cultural Education). It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and advancement of arts, culture, history, and educational initiatives that represent the Caribbean region in South Florida and the broader diaspora community. The organization produces
events and supports independent artists, organizations, and groups who deliver highlevel presentations, in various art forms. These may be visual, performing, culinary, or other art forms that represent Caribbean causes and tell Caribbean stories.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
Estate Planning, Let’s Get Started.
M
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
ost clients who initiate estate planning do so to provide for their loved ones’ needs, and to avoid burdening their family after they are gone with probate and administration expense and delay. But, no matter your reason for initiating estate planning, it is imperative that you understand what your options are, and how a thoughtful estate plan can work for you. Your plan may be simple (just a will), or more complex (a revocable living trust). Let’s examine the estate planning process by exploring the areas we refer to as the three p’s of estate planning. People - Who are the important people in your life? Your important people likely include your loved ones: your spouse or partner, children and grandchildren, and perhaps your parents, siblings or other relatives. Beyond these people, other important “people” could also include charities, special causes, colleges or universities, or churches or temples to which you are connected. For some, important people may also include pets. Spend some time thinking about the impact others have had on your life. Make a list and jot down notes. This is where the planning process begins. Property - By property, we are referring to your assets in general. Compile a list of the assets you own or control. At this point, you do not need to identify policy or account numbers, or exact dollar values. Rather, think about your assets in terms of their nature (including cash, stocks, bonds, businesses, real estate), their value, and your ownership interest. Do you own assets in your name only, in joint tenancy with someone else, or through some other arrangement? Be sure to include often-overlooked assets such as life insurance (death benefit), money owed to you, and any inheritance you may expect to receive. Plans - After identifying the important people in your life and your property, the next step is to consider plans for those people (including yourself), and your property in the event of your own incapacity or death. Whom would you select to make decisions if you could no longer do so yourself? Would the same person handle your finances and your personal and health care decisions? Who would care for your minor children? Who will run your business? How would you distribute your assets to your “people”? Would you like to minimize the impact of estate taxes, or maximize the impact of a charitable bequest? Is there a member of your family with special needs whom you would like to provide for? And finally, is there someone who perhaps should not receive an outright inheritance, without a third-party to manage investments and distributions? These are just a few of the issues to consider when approaching the planning process. An experienced estate planning attorney can help you explore all of these areas and work with you to develop a plan for your unique situation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

HOW TO KEEP YOUR HOLIDAY DECORATIONS ORGANIZED
P
By Marty Basher
icture it: You’re standing in
your basement, hands on hips, looking around in vain at the many boxes and bags that have been stored there, wondering where on earth you stuck the holiday decorations after last year’s festivities. Frustrating, isn’t it? It doesn’t have to be! There are some easy ways you can organize your seasonal decorations so that you can find them in good order, when you want them. It will make your seasonal decorating easier, more enjoyable and cheaper, as you won’t end up buying a new one of something you already have but can’t put your finger on! Pull everything out and group it If you’ve never put much effort into organizing your holiday decorations, it’s probably a good idea to pull everything out—for EVERY holiday—and group them. Easter stuff in an Easter pile, Christmas with Christmas and so on. You can subdivide each one into two logical sub-groups: indoor decorations and outdoor ones. It’s okay to have two storage locations: indoors for your indoor items and the shed or garage for the outdoor ones. As long as you label everything, you’ll be able to find what you need, when you need it. For a lot of people, decorating for the holidays happens over a period of time: first the outdoor lights and decorations, then the indoors. By having them grouped appropriately, you can grab what you need and start jujing up your
home, outside and in! Once you’ve got everything out and organized, you can better judge how many storage containers you’re going to need for the bulk of the items. TIP: buy all the same size bins so that you can stack them in the basement or garage, out of the way when they’re not needed. This is also a good time to triage any broken or unused decorations or ornaments, which are taking up space needlessly. Obviously, large lawn ornaments like reindeer won’t fit in a bin, but most everything else can be put away in plastic tubs with lids—properly labeled, of course! Start packing Get the bins and start packing your decorations into them, again grouped by type: tree decorations in one, mantel decorations in another, lights for inside the house in another and so on. Here are some ideas for storing specific items that can be hard to organize nicely: Light strings—wrap these around a spool of some sort, whether that’s a random piece of cardboard or an empty paper towel tube. Attach a piece of masking tape on which you can note where the lights are meant to go and include a baggie with the extra bulbs. Another option is to use large size zip lock freezer bags to store individual strands, so they don’t become tangled with one another.
Breakable ornaments—for many, a collection of ornaments dating back to previous generations is a family heirloom worth keeping. Find cardboard segment dividers to place each ornament in its own little space, preferably with a little tissue paper for cushioning. Moving stores have these dividers, meant for glassware, but they’ll work perfectly to keep your precious collection safe. For tiny ornaments, egg cartons are a great option, or try plastic cups from the dollar store, lining a bin. Seasonal Linens-garment bags make the perfect way to store them so that they can remain free of moisture and dirt. Vacuum pack bags are also a great option and they can compress quite a lot, taking up less storage space. What about gift wrap and ribbons? Since you’ll need these more than once a year—birthdays, graduations and so on—consider different ways to store these so that you can pull out what you need and get to wrapping! Ideally, dedicate a space in a storage closet with everything you need for wrapping: gift bags, rolls of paper, tissue paper, ribbons, cards, tape and scissors. This way, when you have something to wrap, everything you need is handy and at the ready. And if you like to stock up with post-holiday bargains for wrapping, you’ll have somewhere to put it until you need it. If you’re short on space, a great option is a plastic shoe organizer that you can hang on the back of a closet
door. It’s chock a block with little pockets, perfect for everything but the larger rolls and bags. For those, you need only add a bin where you can place the bags and stand rolls on their ends will be the perfect complement and easy to pull out and look through, for the right gift wrap look. The holidays are meant to be fun and happy occasions, so don’t spend them stressing because you can’t find the stockings or tree skirt: make this the year that you get your closet spaces organized, creating homes for all of your favorite holiday decor.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient. During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” For more information about Dr. Donoway and the Pancreatic-IRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com

be available on the Music Society website nearer the date of the performance. www. westonmusicsociety.org Andrea Burghardt, a WMS Board member, said, “I got to know Martin through one of his interactive classes. I liked the class and the dynamic very much and thought the WMS could use him for an introductory music class for adults and children. Also, since he speaks Spanish, it could be a good way to engage our Latin community and also those who are learning Spanish.” Martin is both a young Argentine musician and producer who engages in different artistic subjects. With an emphasis on music, he takes his students through art and cinematography as well. This class is suitable for people with or without musical experience. He engaged more than 100 people in his first class and is planning to start
a new class by the end of January 2021. His subjects range from the classics to today’s popular music. Martin is a composer and singer. He graduated from the Universidad Catolica Argentina in Buenos Aires with a Bachelor of Cinematic Music. He teaches music production, composition, and how to play the drums. Apart from teaching, Martin has participated with a number of renowned Argentine artists playing the drums. He also leads a group called “Isaias Eres”, who can be heard on Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. Lou Marett, WMS President, notes, “in our hearts, we all know music is the universal language that brings us together. It is the mission of the Weston Music Society to spread that language far and wide”.

POSITIVE PARENTING
Thanks 2020! By Amelis Lopez
T
his year 2020 has been for sure an unseen, unpredictable, and unexpected year for all of us, especially due to COVID-19. One day we were living our regular lives and another day we saw on the news something about a new virus that was spreading really fast and then suddenly: no more schools, we were making lines at the supermarket and desperately trying to learn how to make our way through online grocery shopping. Most of us were forced to stop working and with that followed, no more soccer games, no more dance classes, no more group activities indoor or outdoors. We all started new routines or had no routine at all while forced to stay at home. As a mom of a 1st grader, a 6th grader, and a Senior, our world was shaken completely leaving all of us, including my husband, at home going from being working
parents to teachers, to full time parents and full time husband and wife. Every day was a new challenge but as each day passed I started to enjoy my family even more and more, I started looking at my children with a mindful heart again, we started to play game boards again, spent all we have, to think about new desires, time doing crafts and working on things we priorities or goals in life and be excited and never had time for before. We finally had ready for the good things to come. the whole day just to be at home together Thanks 2020. Weston’s First Santa Parade Brings Christmas Spirit to All

ou would think 2020 would be a year without much Christmas spirit. With COVID-19 still raging, most everything canceled and the country bitterly divided politically, it is reasonable to expect not many people feeling merry. Luckily for Weston, we have a secret weapon of Christmas cheer, his name is Mark Buscemi. Mark gathered a group of his closest friends and pitched his idea: since we all need to maintain social distancing and most holiday-related events have been canceled, why not bring Santa to town with an impromptu 2-vehicle Santa parade. The team jumped into action! Mark, the ideas man, would be the big guy with the red coat. He would ride in the “sley” a Saab convertible, which will be following the “reindeer mobile,” a truck with “elves” handing out individually wrapped
candy canes. Things came together quickly, with a PA system, Christmas music, and outfits for all. The parade kicked off in Executive 1, flowed through several neighborhoods before ending at Weston Town Center. Kids of all ages were touched and excited as Santa drove past. It is pretty clear that this won’t be the last time we see Santa driving through the streets of Weston. Yet

One of the critical features of any home is the electrical panel and is your home’s central nervous system. The electrical panel, also called the electrical breaker panel, is often found in the garage or utility room. It is the part of the electrical system that divides the electrical feed coming into your home from Florida Power and Light into separate circuit breakers. The electrical panel also protects each circuit breaker within the panel. Keeping your panel door closed will help prevent anything from falling onto any breaker or getting inside. It’s vital to maintain clear access and not to store any objects in front of your panel. Inside each electrical breaker panel are independent circuit breakers powering the different areas of your home. The circuit breakers include built-in safety measures
to help prevent electrical shorts. If overloaded, circuit breakers will trip, stopping the flow of electrical current to help prevent overheating, which may result in fire. Over time, circuit breakers themselves can degrade, or the wiring to the circuit breaker can become loose, causing a hidden short. If a circuit breaker does trip, it’s essential to identify what caused it to trip and remove that hazard. Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin tells us that “recently, a few homes in Weston have experienced electric panel failures.” Some manufacturer brands of electrical panels used in homes built from the 1950s through the 1990s have caused fires, injuries, or other safety concerns. These brands are Zinsco, Federal Pacific Breakers (FPE), Challenger/GTE_Sylvania (Eaton/Cutler-Hammer), Pushmatic, and Fuse Box. These brands have been recalled making them unsafe for use. It is unlikely that a homeowner with any of these electrical panels would pass a home inspection today or be
able to obtain homeowner’s insurance. Chief Draizin adds, “people need to be aware of any potential safety hazards from their home’s electrical panel and take immediate steps to make any necessary repairs.” To help ensure your home and family’s safety, check your electrical panel to see if you have any of the recalled brands. If you do have one of the recalled brands, or if yours is over 20 years old regardless of manufacturer, make it a priority to contact a qualified, licensed electrician to inspect it and, if needed, replace it. It’s essential to be aware of your home’s electrical panel’s health, any safety recalls, or known concerns to ensure your home and family’s safety. Scheduling regular inspections with a licensed electrician once per year so they can conduct a thorough examination and complete any necessary repairs will ensure your family will remain safe from the hidden hazards.

aving a sense of purpose in life is associated with a range of qualities, including being more successful and living a happier life. In fact, research published in the JAMA Network Open finds that having a strong sense of purpose in life leads to improvements in both physical and mental health, and it enhances one’s overall quality of life. If there’s one goal people set for the new year, it’s a good idea to make it finding their purpose. “There are so many great benefits of finding and living your life’s purpose,” explains Katie Sandler, personal development and career coach. “The problem is that many people are not quite sure how to do that. They feel lost in trying to discover what their purpose is. All of that can change this year.” This year, Sandler is recommending that people make it their top goal to discover what their purpose is and to live with purpose. Once they do that, they will not only have the health benefits that come, but they will succeed in living the life they want. Their overall life satisfaction and happiness level will increase as well. Having a sense of purpose helps people to live with intention and clarity, because they know what they want and how to get it. Finding one’s life purpose isn’t something that most people do overnight. It’s a process of self-exploration that takes time and patience. The key is to create a long-term plan for your life that will help you to more fully enjoy each day. Here are some tips to help you do just that: Get to know yourself. To do this, you have to do some exploration and ask some questions. What is it that you like, what makes you happy, what do you not like? Narrow down those things that you feel passionate about. Work with someone. Many people turn to others for help in order to discover their purpose. You can do this by asking other people what their thoughts are on what your gifts are for the world and what your strengths are. You can also do this by working with a life coach, who can help you tap into your purpose and show you how to harness the power of it. Become more mindful. Being mindful is a great way to help live life with awareness and self-awareness. It’s also a key component to helping you achieve goals. And ultimately, it enables you to enjoy life and all that it has to offer. Make the commitment. Rather than just saying this will be the year of finding and living your purpose, really commit to it. Ask yourself, on a scale of 1-10, how important is it for you to find your purpose? If it’s below a six, don’t bother. But if it’s above a six, create a plan of action in order to find it – be it working with a coach, finding a self-help book – make sure you follow through. Be patient. Transformation such as this doesn’t happen overnight; it’s going to take time. Be gentle with yourself, go with the flow, and keep yourself on track. Little efforts here and there will add up along the way to big results. Believe in yourself. “I’ve helped many people find their purpose and live their true life,” added Sandler. “It’s amazing what it can do for people in terms of success, happiness, and overall quality of life. There’s just no other substitute, so make this the year that it happens.”

I generally go around behind the hole for every putt I hit and it’s walking back from there to the ball when I take the distance. Other times, I make sure I take my clubs around past the hole so that as I walk back to my ball to putt I count the paces. You’ll figure out what works best for you. ASK THE EXPERT
Moderation: The Best Approach to Cosmetic Surgery By Dr. Charles Messa, M.D.
T
oo much of a good thing is not always the best. Moderation in life results in the ideal balance in many facets of our lives. This holds true for cosmetic surgery as well. From non-invasive treatments to plastic surgery procedures, moderation is the approach I feel yields the best long-term aesthetic results. We have all seen it – from celebrities to people in our local community. The “overdone” “overfilled” or excessively pulled face that resembles an aquatic animal or alien life form more than a natural aesthetic enhanced face or body. The most common mistake is the over injected face and mouth. When fillers are excessively injected to improve facial lines and wrinkles, the natural contours of the face become distorted. Too much Botox or Dysport can leave a patient with a flat, waxy appearing forehead or brow and a motionless masklike face. The fish mouth or duck lips result from exaggerated injections of soft tissue fillers in and around the mouth. Soft tissue fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane
should be injected to fill lines and creases and restore volume where is has been lost throughout the aging process. It is the physician’s responsibility to know when enough is enough with regard to appropriate injection volume. Facial skin laxity or looseness can’t be treated with fillers alone. Skin tightening, such as performed during a facelift, is necessary to lift and achieve the optimal cosmetic result in cases when soft tissue fillers are not sufficient. More filler does not tighten excess facial and neck skin. When facelift surgery is indicated, the technique utilized should be individualized according to the patient’s anatomy. Excessively large breast implants, oversized buttocks enhancement will lead to long term problems for these patients. Breast implant volume is ideally determined by careful measurement of a woman’s anatomy including breast width, height, soft tissue thickness and stretch. Bigger is not always better. Think moderation and individualized
enhancement to achieve the ideal aesthetic improvements. The excessively large, wide buttock from large volume fat transfers or B.B.L. will eventually need to be reduced at some point in that person’s life as the effects of aging and gravity results in a large, sagging buttock. It is up to the physician, as the professional, to help guide a potential
patient to make the appropriate decision to achieve best cosmetic enhancement. I highly recommend to any individual who is considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure to consult with a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) organization such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery with documented experience prior to proceeding.
⊲ Dr. Messa is board certified by both the
American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care.

think we can all agree that 2020 has been a difficult year in so many ways. The first time our generation has had to experience a Pandemic and all of the issues that it brings. I’m sure most of us have had time to think about what in life is really important. Hopefully when all goes back to normal or whatever the new normal turns out to be, we will remember just what is important in all of our lives. In my practice, I have seen people spend years and thousands of dollars fighting over issues which often are really not worth fighting over. If we stop to think and realize how precious our time is perhaps we can avoid disagreements which can be resolved by simply talking to one another with respect. In spite of the fact that I make my living in representing individuals involved in these disagreements, I can assure you that I do my best to focus on what is important. Sometimes I am successful in this endeavor and sometimes I am not. With the beginning of a New Year, perhaps a worthwhile resolution would simply be to try and work things out before the fighting begins. As my website states “Adversaries litigate, Families collaborate”. Nobody anticipates getting divorced but unfortunately, it is a reality in many marriages. If a divorce is either pending or about to begin, or issues from a previous divorce have arisen, think about what is important in your life as well as your children’s lives. Focus on the big picture and not the mini battles. Many couples will not agree to a time-sharing schedule. Sometimes the reason for not agreeing is valid, oftentimes it is not. What every child needs is the love of both parents. This doesn’t always have to equate to equal time with both parents. I have had individuals refuse to settle a case and continue to litigate over one or two days a month with a child. Instead of a 50/50 time-sharing schedule, it becomes a 48% to 52%. Logically it would seem that a compromise can be reached with these facts. Often times it is in reality a power struggle and nobody wishes to give in. The interests of the children remain secondary. You must ask yourself, is the extra day worth the battle? Personal property can also result in petty disputes. Unless the items in question have either sentimental value or significant value because they are rare, most items are easily replaced. I can never understand couples who spend significant attorney’s fees to litigate over items that have less value than the fees they are paying, but couples routinely do. I am not suggesting that all disputes that occur in the process of a divorce can be resolved by talking it out. More often than not, the issues to be litigated are of major significance to the parties or the minor children. When issues like these cannot be resolved then the Judge will be asked to decide. Hopefully, the next time an issue arises either during a divorce or after the divorce is final, the parties can simply ask themselves is this dispute really benefiting anyone or perhaps they can make better use of their time.

2. PLAN FOR INCAPACITY AS WELL AS DEAT Estate planning doesn’t just come into play if you pass away. It can also protect your interests if you are incapacitated and unable to express your desires regarding matters ranging from finances to health care. A strong estate plan will typically use tools such as a durable power of attorney to give someone you trust the authority to handle financial matters on your behalf, or a designation of Healthcare Surrogate to help make medical decisions, and/or advance healthcare directives such as a living will to express your wishes regarding things like medical care.
3. CONSULT WITH AN ATTORNEY The internet-savvy generation often makes the mistake of thinking they can handle their estate planning on their own using resources like online form wills. This error can have major repercussions. Your will may not be legally enforceable in your state. You may also need a combination of unique documents that goes well beyond a will. Weston Native Shelbie Rassler Brings Music to the World By Terry Jaillet
W
hat the world needs now, is love, sweet love.” Those words, from the 1965 Burt Bacharach classic have never been more relevant than today. Last March, Weston native Shelbie Rassler made sure the entire world knew it. Shelbie created an internet-enabled mashup of the classic song that quickly went viral on Youtube and Tic Toc, amassing millions of views. “Distance won’t stop us from coming together to share some love,” reads the
text at the beginning of the video, “I hope you all enjoy this cover, with a little help from my friends.” What follows is 4 minutes of musical crescendo, beginning with just Shelbie and ending with a huge group in perfect harmony. The Cypress Bay Grad has been performing her whole life and she is currently taking the world by storm. Shelbie is currently finishing her senior year at the Berkley College of Music is currently studying with Pulitzer Prize/Grammy/Oscar (etc.) winning John Corigliano at Juilliard, and the next project she will be releasing is an original song, in honor of the frontline workers and healthcare professionals that have been heroes these last several months. The song

was commissioned by Broward Health, so it’ll all be rooted in South Florida. Life moves fast for people as talented as Shelbie. It seems like just yesterday she was awarded the Weston Music Society scholarship. Rose Sklar VP Ways and Means, Weston Music Society, remembers Shelbie from her days at Cypress Bay, “Shelbie Rassler is living proof that by using the universal language of music and collaborating with technology-savvy singers and musicians, we can all come together to make positive change. I have known Shelbie since her Cypress Bay High School days, and I could not be more proud than if she were my own.” Shelbie’s plate has been incredibly full during the quarantine. She has composed a number of pieces and has been a part of some incredible collaborative efforts with some of the biggest names in music. She served on several panels regarding the arts, including The College Music Society panel, the Berklee College of Music webinar series, a Guest Curator for 21st Century Music’s “POP Picks”, and various Female Quotient panels. Shelbie was awarded the CBS Award from David Pogue on television and taught a Technical Workshop for Georgia Stitt’s Maestra Music on how to create a Virtual Orchestra video. At barely over 20 years old, Shelbie has already accomplished more than many 50-year olds! We can wait to see what’s next for this daughter of Weston.

ROTARY NEWS
Rotary Run for Tomorrow Safely Enjoyed by Thousands By Caroline Williams, Duree & Company
T
he Rotary Club of Weston and The City of Weston community came together to make a seemingly impossible charity event happen. On Dec. 6 more than 1,600 adults and 700 children participated in the Rotary Run for Tomorrow. This event included an in-person Health & Fitness Festival and an in-person Get Fit Challenge. The funds raised help support those in need in Broward County and worldwide. The City of Weston and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (the event’s title sponsor) presented the event. “The Rotary Run for Tomorrow was a
wonderful way for so many parents and
kids to finally be able to get out again for a fun event,” said Frank Dreier of the Rotary Club of Weston. “This event showcased that Weston is a great place to live, even during the most difficult times. It far exceeded our expectations. We are very thankful to the City of Weston commissioners, our generous sponsors, and hundreds of volunteers who made this event possible.” The Get Fit Challenge and the Health & Fitness Festival were fun-filled health and wellness events open to the entire community. They took place at multiple locations throughout the City of Weston due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to adhere to social distancing guidelines. A variety of fitness, wellness, and health activities happened at every location. Participants also had the option to complete online tasks or enjoy a drive-around-town scavenger hunt. The Sagemont Lower School won this year’s Commissioner Cup at the Get Fit Challenge. The top three schools that gained the most points in the competition ― The Sagemont Lower School, Imagine Charter School at Weston, and Indian Trace Elementary ― will receive a $1,000 cash prize. The remaining participating elementary schools in Weston will receive $500 thanks to the Rotary Club of Weston, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, and the many event sponsors. The in-person events served as an example that other organizations can safely
host in-person events amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rotary Club of Weston incorporated fun games that allowed participants to stay inside their car while partaking in the activities. To allow for social distancing, the in-person events took place at multiple locations throughout the City of Weston to ensure that there were no large crowds. The Rotary Club of Weston is proud to have hosted a successful in-person fundraising event despite all the obstacles due to COVID-19 and believes that other organizations can adopt this format to host their own in-person events. • The Rotary Club of Weston meets weekly at 7:30 AM on Thursdays via ZOOM . Please contact Pete Pecci at 954.882.9061 or Visit www. westonrotary.com to learn more.

ood vision is critical for many classroom tasks - from reading books or seeing a whiteboard to viewing a computer screen. Without healthy vision, students can face unnecessary challenges not only in the classroom, but also to their mental, physical, social and emotional well being. A comprehensive eye examination for students is one of the most important “to-dos” as children head back to school, and yet it is often overlooked. Without an eye exam, many children will suffer from undetected vision problems, and some may even be misdiagnosed as having a learning disorder. Millions of school children in America have vision conditions that can negatively affect learning. Many parents rely on vision screenings in school to check for eye problems, but that isn’t enough. Comprehensive eye exams are necessary to detect problems that a simple screening can miss, such as eye coordination, moderate amounts of
farsightedness, and astigmatism. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), vision screenings are not diagnostic, and therefore, typically identify only a small portion of the vision problems in children. During a comprehensive eye exam, a doctor of optometry will also check not just the child’s visual acuity, but how well the eyes work together as a team, focusing ability, visual alignment, eye tracking skills, and color vision, as well as the overall health of the eyes. The AOA recommends the following schedule for eye examinations for children: • Infants should receive a comprehensive baseline eye exam between the ages of 6 and 12 months, immediately after the critical period when the eye undergoes rapid and profound changes and is, therefore, most vulnerable to interference with normal development. • Preschoolers should receive at least one in-person, comprehensive eye exam between the ages of 3 and 5 to prevent or diagnose any condition that may have long-term effects.
•
School-aged children (6 to 18 years) should receive a comprehensive exam prior to entering the first grade and annually thereafter. Early detection and treatment provide the very best opportunity to treat and correct vision problems to help children see clearly. Good vision doesn’t just happen, a child’s brain learns how to use eyes to see. The longer a vision problem goes undiagnosed and untreated, the more a child’s brain has to overcompensate to live with the vision problem, instead of developing and learning normally. For additional information regarding children’s vision, please visit www.aoa.org.

Ozone Air Sanitation Kills COVID-19 Virus While Cleaning Air
O
zone air purification systems have been proven to kill the COVID-19 virus, giving businesses and homeowners another tool in the fight against the spread of the disease. Sany Plus and Sany Car systems, provided by Ozone Professionals, an air
sanitation company based in Fort Lauderdale, were shown to be highly effective at removing and killing the virus, according to a study conducted by the University of Padova. The systems use the naturally occurring isotope of oxygen called ozone to kill and remove
the COVID-19 virus, along with other harmful pollutants like bacteria, mold, and other viruses. The systems are even effective at removing foul-smelling odors. The portable, commercial-grade systems are made in Italy and is already widely used by schools, ambulance, hospitals, gyms, doctors’ offices, and more. In fact, any closed-in location where people regularly gather can benefit from the air purification system. “The results obtained show that the Sanity System device (ozone-based technology) has an effective virucidal action against SARS-CoV-2, with a reduction in viral load of over 99% with the P2 program,” concluded Andrea
Cristanti, Professor of Molecular Parasitology. In addition to being extremely effective at sanitizing the air, the systems use no chemicals so there is no residue or need to stay away while the systems are working. The systems are available fo purchase or to rent.

SCHOOL NEWS
Grab & Go - Broward Schools Feed Families During Break By Jon Duka
F
amilies throughout Broward County let “someone else do the cooking” over the Holiday Break thanks to Food and Nutrition Services at Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) The school system offered free Grab-and-Go meals to any family with
children, regardless of where they attend school. The extra meals were distributed to families with kids under 18 years of age on December 15 through December 17th. Children and their parents were allowed to pick up multiple meals by walking or driving through the car or bus loop at multiple schools across the county. The program was put in place to help offset the costs of feeding families during the holidays for those most impacted by the pandemic. BCPS began food distribution in March, 2020 and has not wavered. With most students still learning from home, meals have been distributed through the drive-up/ walk-up system to any needy child or family. BCPS anticipates continuing with meal distribution through the end of the school year at a minimum. Students will be welcomed back for the second semester on January 4th. Families were asked during mid-December to
indicate whether or not their children will be returning to school or learning remotely. It is anticipated that many, if not most kids will continue to stay home for the remainder of the school year.

REAL ESTATE
A Look From My Window By Denice Landaeta, Dluxuss Real Estate Group
A look from my room’s window at Cleveland Clinic and into our beautiful City of Weston’s Real Estate Market 2021
I
went from a very busy lifestyle as a top real estate professional, to several weeks locked-down in my home, to a patient at Cleveland Clinic. I have had time to reflect and write about how this pandemic has affected our lives forever. I am lucky to be writing when I know many were not as fortunate. I will share my experience and how I feel about the importance of a home and the need to choose the right space for your family. Your home, Your space, Your temple is a lifestyle option! Weston has always been a destination to move to. It has been regarded as one of the safest cities to live and work in, in America, since 2016. Since the pandemic started, homebuyers flock from cities in the north with a
new ability to do their jobs remotely from anywhere. Families looking for more space, pools, and office square feet have made our market stronger and busier than ever before. In Fact, I have closed over 70 remote transactions during the first 10 months of the pandemic. Sellers have the advantage in Weston right now. Demand is high but supply is limited. Only a few new developments are available in Weston. They target the luxury market or senior housing rather than the most desired Weston homes: 2,500 to 3,500 sq ft. There are also opportunities for buyers to benefit. For example, today’s low-interest rates will allow you to move to a bigger home, at the same, or similar monthly payment as your smaller current home. Our business partner Brian Frank from Guaranteed Rate can help.
70 / Our City Weston / January 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
Moving to a bigger home or a home with a pool or office space may be an option for 2021. Most importantly, buying a home with space and a payment that provides you the lifestyle and comfort that you and your family desire may be attainable in the current market. This trying time has shown us what luxury really is: Luxury is having health, meeting with family and friends, luxury is hugs and kisses, and the privilege of loving and being alive. Luxury is laughing out loud with the people around you. This is the true meaning of a luxury lifestyle. ANIMAL HEALTH
Heartworm Disease and Your Dog By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
H
eartworm disease is a serious and sometimes fatal disease for dogs. It is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis that is transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected by biting dogs that are already infected with heartworms. Any dog living or visiting an area that has mosquitoes and infected dogs is at risk of getting heartworm disease. The Heartworm Life Cycle in Dogs ▸ A mosquito ingests tiny, immature worms, called microfilariae, in a blood meal from a heartworm-infected host animal. ▸ The microfilariae develop inside the mosquito, becoming infective larvae within 2 to 3 weeks. ▸ The mosquito transmits the infective larvae when it bites a new host. ▸ The larvae develop inside the dog’s body tissues, then enter the bloodstream and move toward the heart and blood vessels. The larvae grow into adult worms inside the heart, where they will live until they die (about 5 to 7 years). Adult heartworms can grow to over a foot in length. ▸ After 5 to 6 months inside the heart, female worms release microfilariae into the blood, and the cycle starts again. Signs of Disease Dogs infected with heartworms may not show any signs of disease for 1 or 2 years. By then, the disease may have already damaged the dog’s heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. The most common signs of heartworm infection are a dry, chronic cough; general weakness; shortness of breath; and lack of stamina. These signs occur because the heartworms clog the heart and blood vessels, making the heart less efficient and reducing the blood supply. All of the signs associated with heartworm disease will be more noticeable after extensive exercise. In advanced cases, the dog may have congestive heart failure, swelling in the abdomen or legs, weight loss, and/or anemia.
Diagnosing the Disease The most common way to detect heartworm disease is from a blood test, which detects antigens produced by the adult female heartworms. Your veterinarian may also look at the blood sample under a microscope to see if any microfilariae are present. If the results of these tests are positive for heartworm, additional blood work, X-rays, and echocardiograms may be in order to further determine how extensive the infection is, the number of worms present in your dog’s body, and the amount of damage they have done to her vital organs. These tests can also help determine whether or not your dog will be able to tolerate the heartworm treatment. Treating Heartworm The vast majority of heartworm patients are treated successfully. Treatment consists of both eliminating the parasites and managing the heart, vascular, and systemic problems caused by the infection. If the infection is not too severe, your
74 / Our City Weston / January 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
veterinarian will likely give your dog a special medication to kill the adult heartworms. Your dog will then need a month’s rest to rid herself of the decomposing worms. Following this, you will need to give your dog some medicine to kill the microfilariae. Your pet should then be put on a prevention program to avoid becoming re-infected. Preventing Heartworm The easiest way to manage heartworm disease is to prevent it. This can be done with oral and topical medications. Discuss the available preventatives with your veterinarian to find out which medication is best for your dog. Many veterinarians now recommend year-round heartworm prevention.

or many seniors, performing the most simple tasks can become a challenge and while they may need help with day to day activities, they may not want to live with their children or in an assisted living facility. For those individuals, Seniors Helping Seniors® is here to help. For the past six years, Seniors Helping Seniors has been pairing seniors in need with active seniors who can empathize and understand their needs. Seniors Helping Seniors Franchise Owner Diana Marrero Cabassi explains more about this unique service and how it may benefit you or your aging loved ones. What is Seniors Helping Seniors? We are a licensed agency that provides companionship care to seniors who need a little bit of help to stay home independently. What differentiates your business from other caregiver agencies? The quality of our caregivers and the fact that we are the only agency that, for the most part, employs active seniors as caregivers. This peer-to-peer approach is based on the idea that the best person to care for a senior is someone who can understand and relate to their needs. What do you look for when pairing caregivers with seniors needing help? We match people based on common interests. We employ people that are genuinely interested in helping others, who are caring and compassionate, and can relate to the people they are caring for. We like to say that it’s “Like getting a little help from your friends®”. Who is your typical client? Seniors who need help around the house and/or companionship.
Provides Companionship and Care People are living longer but not necessarily healthier lives. Additionally, loneliness affects many seniors and our service provides friendship to those who may be feeling a bit isolated or depressed. Who are your typical caregivers? Although our caregivers are unique in their own way, they are all loving, caring and compassionate individuals who understand the needs of the seniors they are assisting. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the people they are caring for. We look for people who have a volunteer heart that don’t mind getting paid for their services. What do you do to ensure the safety and security of your clients? I personally interview all potential caregivers and check their references. In addition, everyone is required to undergo a Level 2 FBI background screening, which is done at the national level. What services does Seniors Helping Seniors provide? Our caregivers can help with anything from preparing meals
to providing a ride to the doctor. We can assist with light housekeeping, doing the laundry, going to the grocery store or running other errands; we can even help in caring for their pets. In addition, we assist with assuring safety and fall prevention, medication reminders, memory loss support, relief for family members, overnight supervision and 24-hour care. In other words, we provide assistance when needed offering as much or as little support as the client needs. How did Seniors Helping Seniors start? Seniors Helping Seniors was founded over 20 years ago by Kiran and Philip Yocom. It was initially a non-profit organization that provided relief to members of their community in Pennsylvania. Prior to starting the company, Kiran had worked in India with Mother Teresa. I joined Seniors Helping Seniors after moving to Florida to help care for my mother when she was diagnosed with dementia. After learning how Seniors Helping Seniors placed such a high priority
on helping seniors maintain their independence and dignity, I decided to open a local office and I’m very fortunate that we have been providing service in the area since 2014! Please tell us more about the personalized service you provide. For the people who help in the Seniors Helping Seniors community, this is not just a job, and you are not just a client. We’re interested in who you are, what you need, and what you, in turn, can share with us. Our main goal is to provide loving, compassionate care. The most important thing for me is that seniors, who often are ignored and disrespected, are treated with dignity and given the respect they deserve. Anything else you would like to add? Our rates are very competitive, and we can tailor a plan of care to fit within most budgets. I encourage you to call and schedule a free in-home consultation.
