It is the Beginning of the Pandemic’s End
O
n Thursday, March 11, President Joe Biden signed into law “The American Rescue Plan Act.” After signing the legislation, he addressed the nation, highlighting that COVID-19 vaccines will soon be available to all adults. As a community news publication, we steer clear of politics, and we will do so regarding the legislation and the President’s policies. We see that day as a watershed moment; it was the beginning of the pandemic’s end. The COVID pandemic has affected us all in different ways. Many of us lost loved ones. Our families lived isolated from each other for over a year. Kids stayed home from school for up to three semesters. Small businesses, especially ones where people gather, have suffered. As our collective immunity becomes broader, it will be more critical than ever to support our local communities. The character of where we live is more threatened now than ever before. National brands and Internet retailers are efficient and predictable but make communities indistinguishable from one another. Let’s make a point to support locally-owned restaurants and venues. Go to a sporting event at a local high school or go for a walk in one of our fabulous parks. As we come out of our COVID hibernation, take stock of all the great things living in South Florida has to offer. It is a new beginning. Sincerely,
Terry & Christy Jaillet

Being a Senior these days is tough enough. And moving from your home to Senior Living isn’t easy. On top of that, there’s this pandemic; crazy politics; the economy; the list goes on... Here’s the antidote! The brand new, luxurious, stress-free, peace-ofmind living that Seniors only get at
America’s top-rated community. And now it’s in Weston. We’re already over 50% reserved and our first residents are moving in now. Time is running out if you want to take advantage of special pricing, premium selection, and other perks. Take a deep breath and smile. It’s about to get better!
Palace at Weston is OPEN!
O
pened in March 2021, residents of The Palace at Weston are treated like royalty. The five-star Senior Living Community features spacious, designer-appointed apartments and luxury resort-style amenities along with gourmet dining experiences and entertainment options that rival any cruise ship. The Palace offers three distinct buildings under one roof with Independent, Assisted Living and Memory Care residences.
Adam Rosenblum, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for The Palace Group, shares more about what to expect now that the Community is open.
What exactly is The Palace at Weston? It is a luxury Senior Living Community offering residents a continuum of care with Independent, Assisted Living, and Memory Care, in three separate buildings; each has its own entrance, amenities, and staffing geared to the care level it offers. We invite interested individuals to visit the building as soon as possible to experience the elegance that is found at The Palace at Weston.
Tell us about the residences at The Palace at Weston. The Palace offers some of the most spacious and well-appointed Senior Living residences in South Florida. There are two fully furnished one- and two-bedroom model apartments to show someone what an actual residence will include. Each features a kitchen with granite countertops and a stainless-steel appliance package, California-style custom closets, and luxurious bathrooms. Most residences include a den for extra space as well as a balcony.
The apartments sound beautiful, but what else does The Palace at Weston offer residents?
Ritz Carlton-style amenities and services are trademarks of The Palace Group and include an elegant dining room, state-ofthe-art fitness center, piano bar, theater, library, and computer center. A monthly fee includes entertainment and social activities, gourmet dining and wine, security, maintenance, transportation, housekeeping, and utilities, and satellite TV.
Please tell us more about the exciting entertainment options.
Each day is like living aboard a luxurious cruise ship. Many senior communities offer happy hours once a week; our communities offer happy hours every night with live entertainment. But that’s only happy hour. There are activities that take place every day, morning into night, planned by a full-time activity department. We want people to have a wealth of choices and new experiences, from belly dancing to learning to play the piano to adult education classes with the University of Miami OSHER. People want to enjoy highend amenities and want to be challenged mentally and physically.
How has The Palace adjusted in this Covid-19 world?
We are pleased to say that The Palace’s Senior Living Communities have weathered the Covid storm very well. To date, over 90% of our residents have been vaccinated as well as the vast majority of team members. Under the direction of our Chief Nursing Officer Marilyn Bustamante, The Palace continues to adhere to Covid-19 mitigation protocols, while providing the socially engaging lifestyle that The Palace Communities are known for.
What else distinguishes The Palace?
We bring over 40 years of Senior Living experience to what we do. Jacob and Helen Shaham, founders and owners of The Palace Group, are passionately involved in the day-to-day operations of every one of their communities. The Palace at Weston is their tenth community.
What industry awards has The Palace Group earned?
The Palace communities have received scores of notable awards and recognition including the National Association of Home Builders’ prestigious BEST Senior Living and BEST Independent Living Community in the country. The Palace also has been recognized for four
consecutive years by Gallup as one of the Most Exceptional Workplaces in the world. Furthermore, we seek the highest standards offered by the senior housing industry such as The Governor’s Gold Seal Award, CARF Accreditation, and Joint Commission Accreditation.

FLORIDA PREPAID ANNOUNCES ANNUAL OPEN ENROLLMENT
A
COLLEGE SAVINGS PLANS START AT $45/MONTH
s families continue to recover from the pandemic, Florida Prepaid College Board is starting its annual Open Enrollment with five affordable plans starting at $45 per month, each built for flexibility and guaranteed by the State of Florida. The Florida Prepaid College Board is encouraging Floridians to plan for a brighter tomorrow by finding a plan that meets their budget and goals. Florida families last year purchased more than 50,000 plans, committing to their children’s future even as the pandemic hit. In a recent study conducted by the Board, more than 90 percent of Florida parents say college is more important than ever or just as important in the wake of COVID-19. “As challenging as things continue to be, we are encouraged to see how many Florida families are looking to brighter days ahead and the importance of a college education,” said Board Chairman John
D. Rood. “We hope that every family will consider enrolling in a Prepaid Plan, which offers them secure, guaranteed and affordable college savings options. Prepaid Plans offer certainty in an uncertain world.” Prepaid Plans are designed to help families maximize their college savings by picking a plan to fit their savings goals, and locking in the future cost of college for less. And the earlier a family starts saving for a child’s college education, the less they need to save each month. This allows families to start saving early so their child’s college tuition is ready and waiting for them. 2021 Florida Teacher of the Year Krista Stanley attended Florida State University using a Prepaid Plan, and encourages families to save early for their children, just as her parents did. “I am grateful for this program and the flexibility it offers to parents across the State of Florida,” said Stanley. “Florida Prepaid
changed my life and allowed me to be financially prepared before, during, and after college.” If a child attends an out-of-state or private college, a Prepaid Plan will pay the same amount as it would pay at a public college or university in Florida. Every Prepaid Plan is guaranteed by the State of Florida, so you can never lose your investment, and a child has up to 10 years after high school graduation to use the plan. With Plans starting at $45/month for a 1-Year Florida University Plan for a newborn, there is no better time to start saving. The Board also offers five other Prepaid Plans, including the most popular 4-Year Florida University Plan, as well as the 1-Year University Plan. Open Enrollment runs February 1 through April 30. A Puppy Tale By Beverly Perkins

bout a year ago, Cesilia Riquelme was diagnosed with brain cancer. This horrific form of cancer interferes with the brain’s functions such as muscle control, memory, and other normal body functions. The sweet sixteen-year-old teenage girl and her family were devastated when they received such news. Not only was this disease difficult for her, but her parents hated seeing how it made their typically high-spirited daughter sad and depressed. Cesilia always wanted a puppy and she desired one even more since she was now fighting for her life. They wanted to give their only child everything they could during such a trying time, but it was difficult. However, they received the amazing news that Make-A-Wish ® Southern Florida wanted to grant her life-changing wish to have a puppy. “My daughter always wanted a little puppy. What’s All the Racquet About? By Beverly Perkins
T
he City of Weston has taken part in the latest craze…pickleball. Usually when mentioning pickles in South Florida, one thinks of the nearest deli. However, pickleball is not an edible item, but a paddle-sport game for all ages, skill levels, and abilities. Regardless of age, whether its players are five or eighty-five, the game is easy to learn and fun to play. Although pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, outside Seattle, WA by a few fathers who wanted to create a game that would engage their children during the lazy days of summer, pickleball has recently
become the fastest growing sport in the USA. These three dads wanted their game to be family-friendly, yet challenging and accessible to everyone. Weston Families
Chalked the Walk P
icture-perfect weather provided an ideal day for families to come out and enjoy a morning of creating works of art in sidewalk chalk along the walkways at Library Park. Jami Nix Rahn, Past President of the Arts Council, notes, “Library Park has always been my favorite space in Weston. I was so happy to see that the Arts Council partnering with the City of Weston, could find the perfect event for this beautiful outdoor space.” The Arts Council of Greater Weston in partnership with the City of Weston highlighted the importance of art in our community with this creative way to mark the 10th annual Celebrate the Arts event. While not the usual variety of arts activities and showcases, due to COVID, this year’s event allowed participants to create their own artistic interpretation of the theme, “Who’s Your Superhero?” Weston Event Manager Annalisa Walker remarked, “It was great to see families working together to create works of art using chalk. The smiles on everyone’s faces was worthwhile. At the conclusion of the event, participants expressed their gratitude for this safe, outdoor, community-engaging event.” Weston Mayor Margaret Brown added, “I and the City Commission deeply appreciate the effort and creativity that went into ‘reinventing’ this year’s Celebrate the Arts Day to ensure the safety of our families while also providing such a creative and fun outlet of expression. This is truly what great artists do, they adapt, and we thank the Arts Council and our staff for a wonderful day.” Laura Dobrzanski, current ACGW President, wraps it up, “It was a gorgeous day for the community to come out and enjoy some fun outdoors. We are so fortunate to have such a strong relationship with the City of Weston to make this event possible.”

As over seventy-five percent of divorced individuals eventually choose to remarry, blended families now outnumber traditional nuclear families. And while this family dynamic has become the new normal, it’s a far cry from what was portrayed on the classic television series, “The Brady Bunch.” If you are part of a blended family, you face some unique estate planning challenges. These include providing for your current spouse if he or she survives you, and making sure that when your spouse dies your children will be taken care of. Obviously, after the first spouse passes, the family dynamic can change dramatically; what the surviving spouse ends up doing with his or her assets can often be unpredictable. Let’s explore just a few possible estate planning options. Your spouse. A simple, albeit not wise, approach would be to leave everything to your spouse. As your spouse adores your children, you have no doubt that he/she will take care of your children after you are gone, right? Keep in mind that an unintended consequence of this approach might be totally disinheriting your own children! Consider this: After you are gone if your spouse becomes incapacitated it is very likely that your spouse’s children will take over the financial affairs of the family. You don’t need a vivid imagination to see how that might turn into a disaster. What happens when your spouse dies? Or remarries? Without thoughtful planning, your assets may ultimately be inherited by your stepchildren, or even by the person who marries your spouse! Proper legal planning can avoid this potential pitfall. Your children. Another solution is to leave assets to your spouse and your children. While this guarantees that your children will not be disinherited, this path may lead to unintended consequences. Leaving assets outright to your children opens up a wide range of concerns, including the possibility that they may squander their inheritance by spending or investing unwisely, or lose most or all in a nasty divorce, an untimely lawsuit, or through bankruptcy. Even if your children are adults, shouldn’t you still protect them from future creditors and predators? Your ex-spouse. You probably don’t consider your ex, but your former spouse plays a role in your estate planning. Think about it. If you leave money to your minor children, it is likely that your ex-spouse will be appointed by the probate court to manage your children’s property. What happens if a child dies while single and childless? Who would inherit their assets? As the next-of-kin of your children, that individual can be your ex-wife or ex-husband. Planning effectively for a blended family requires creativity, experience, and know-how. Consult with an estate planning professional to formulate a plan that is right for you and your family. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

2021 PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE
SPECIAL FEATURE
Making the Grade –
Choosing the Best Private School for Your Child
W
hen considering sending your child to a private school, it is vital to take into account various factors, especially if you have to pay a pretty penny to attend. In this day and age, it is evident that academics are getting more rigorous, standardized tests are increasingly difficult, and the pressure of college is no joke. Colleges today want a well-rounded, educated, unique students, so it is key to find a private school that will enable your child to embody these qualities.
and Cambridge’s Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) exams. High passing rates indicate that the educators at the school know how to set their students up for success. Passing an exam often allows the student to receive college credit, so they won’t have to retake that course in college. Not only do high passing rates increase the likelihood of your child receiving college credit, but it implies that your child is more likely to do better in the course throughout the year as well.
Find a School With Good Extracurriculars
The first factor to consider should be the size of the school. It will be harder for your child to stand out in a very large class. Most colleges compare students against their class, not other schools, so this factor is very important. It will be easier for your child to stand out in a small pond than in a large sea of students. Additionally, you should ensure that there are ample extracurriculars at your selected private school that appeal to your child. Having good extracurriculars and sports teams should be a deciding factor when selecting a private school. Colleges often look to recruit athletes from well-known private schools. A wide variety of extracurriculars gives your child the option to be involved in an organization that actually interest them. Colleges want ambitious students, so leadership positions in clubs and organizations are crucial to your child’s success.
Prioritizes Academics & Education
Another factor to consider would be the passing rates of Advanced Placement (AP) 38 / Our City Weston / April 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education. Academics That Are Challenging, High Passing Rates on AP Exams
Apart from just the passing rate itself, parents should also pay attention to score distributions. The highest possible AP score is a 5, and the lowest passing score is a 3. A school may have a high passing rate, but it is important to know the proportion of students receiving 4’s and 5’s, not just 3’s. Different scores may earn a student differ-
ent credits at certain colleges. Although it is important for passing rates to be high, the environment of the school will also contribute to your child’s success. School should be a place where students should feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed. It is now more important than ever that your child feels safe at school, but as a parent, you should be certain that you feel comfortable just the same as you send your child off to that school every weekday.
Guidance Counselors That Care About Your Child’s Future
Most importantly, students should feel comfortable reaching out to guidance counselors and advisors. Having supportive guidance counselors and understanding teachers can truly have a positive impact on your child’s high school experience. Counselors should be available to aid with schedules, college applications, college essays, and even personal issues. Good college advisors and counselors are imperative to making the college application process as seamless as possible. It is important to make sure that guidance counselors and college advisors are accessible to students at all times. Overall, there are many factors to consider when selecting the right private school for your child. The importance of these factors may vary depending on your child’s interests and priorities. Although this information may seem overwhelming, it should be helpful in narrowing down which school is the best fit for your child. With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education.

Cypress Bay Students Know
Where there is Love, there is Light! By Beverly Perkins
J
ust a couple of months ago, The Broward Health Foundation hosted a virtual tribute to all the healthcare heroes who have been on the front lines. The one-hour special event not only expressed gratitude for their selfless healthcare workers but also raised more than $225,000 for Broward Health Foundation’s Covid-19 Relief Fund, which provides ongoing philanthropic support for Broward Health’s evolving needs throughout the pandemic. Hosted by six-time Emmy Award-winning journalist Laurie Jennings, the tribute featured moving patient stories, uplifting interviews with frontline workers, segments with Broward Health leadership, and appearances by special guests such as NBA Hall of Famer and Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning and former Miami Dolphins standout Twan Russell. Nonetheless, a highlight of the presentation was the debut of an original song entitled “Light and Love,” composed and
produced by Weston native Shelbie Rassler. The gifted musician is a Cypress Bay High School graduate and currently a master’s degree student at the prestigious private performing arts conservatory, The Julliard School in New York City. “When the Broward Health Foundation reached out about writing a piece dedicated to our Healthcare Heroes, I could not have been more honored and excited. These incredible individuals risk their lives every single day for the well-being of others, and I felt so fortunate to have had the meaningful opportunity of saying ‘thank you’. Furthermore, as a student who grew up in Weston, it was special to work with current area high school students and collaboratively produce this piece for the event,” exclaimed Shelbie Rassler. Rassler has already gained national attention for several high-profile col-
laborations, and her original score was performed by dozens of South Florida high school students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Dillard High School, J.P. Taravella, Archbishop McCarthy, South Plantation, Dreyfoos School of the Arts, NSU University School, American Heritage, Western High School, and Cypress Bay High School, who collaborated on vocals, instrumentals, and dance. “After everything this past year, it was nice to be able to give back to the people who have spent every day at the forefront of the pandemic. Using the arts, we were able to thank the healthcare workers in the way we know best and offer some light in the middle of all the darkness,” said Cypress Bay senior Ashely Valent.

multitude of original curriculum ideas were showcased during the 24th annual Broward Education Foundation Innovative Teacher Idea Expo which looked a whole lot different this year. Entirely online for the first time, these unique projects developed by innovative Broward County Public Schools teachers, to better engage and motivate their students, were shared in the new virtual format. Teachers from Plantation, Davie, Hollywood, Weston, Coconut Creek, Hollywood, Margate, and every city in-between brought their most innovative classroom projects to the online platform. Representing Tequesta Trace Middle School in Weston was Jennifer Wilson. The 6th grade Science teacher
designed an interdisciplinary project for her students in the Cambridge program that aligned Earth Science and Language Arts by using the well-received novel, The Martian: Classroom Edition by Andy Weir. The highly effective educator created interactive, engaging science activities to help students build background knowledge and develop problem-solving skills. Playing Terraforming Mars challenged students to collaborate, problem-solve, and persevere. Growing potato plants enriched students’ knowledge of botany as they documented observations, experiment with soil and water conditions, and nurtured their plants. Virtual field trips and websites also built a background
and enhanced the reading experience such as NASA’s Mars Trek to follow Mark Watley’s journey; solving NASA’s Mars math challenges; taking a virtual field trip to Mars with Discovery Education; completing a WebQuest about the newest Mars Rover, Perseverance; and working with Broward County School’s STEM+Computer Science program to take students on a Google Expedition to Mars. By reading The Martian, students became better readers and problem solvers. Plus, they developed a deeper appreciation for the Earth’s resources as well as becoming better stewards. Wilson’s goal is to develop lifelong learners who have a positive impact on the world. “The Broward Education
Foundation has been an invaluable resource for me and all teachers in Broward County,” exclaimed Wilson. “I am continuously impressed at the dedication that the Foundation shows to Broward’s teachers. The foundation leaders work tirelessly and at all times of the day, week, and year, to help all teachers hone their skills and shine. I am forever grateful for their support and encouragement to help me do my best for my students.”

Florida Senator Shevrin ‘Shev’ Jones, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Ben Sorensen were among local dignitaries who joined the festivities and honored CDTC with a special Proclamation in celebration of Children’s Dental Health Month. Children with special needs and those who are at risk had a chance to meet the Tooth Fairy and their favorite characters from Frozen. Dr. Lidia Alonso, DMD, CDTC’s pediatric dentist, who specializes in children who require personal, specialized care helped families learn about CDTC’s Dental Clinic which helps to relieve anxieties and fears children may have when going to the dentist.

ASK THE EXPERT
Understanding Mental-Wellness, ADHD and Nutrition Deficiencies
R
esearchers are beginning to learn how to favorably influence genes via the study of epigenetics, a gene-} altering process called methylation which is involved in 70% of serious psychiatric conditions. Several studies revealed that most mental disorders involve disturbances or imbalances of essential nutrients that alter brain function. All heritable mental illnesses were presumed to have an unavoidable genetic component and people believe their biological and psychological fate has already been predetermined and is locked in by gene mutations. Many mental disorders now appear to be epigenetic, rather than genetic. This means that gene protein making can be switched on (called gene expression) or off (called gene silencing) by environmental factors such as radiation, temperature, food or lack of food. Certain molecules within foods (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential oils) can do this reliably. Most severe heritable mental disturbances will be reversible once we understand how to tap into epigenetics. Moreover, present nutrient therapies have already resulted in thousands of reports of recovery in persons diagnosed with violent behavior, ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. More than 70% of people with behavioral and mental disorders have a methylation imbalances, this chemical that dominates gene expression. About 42% of schizophrenics are over-methylated while 28% are undermethylated. More than 95% of persons diagnosed with autism, OCD, and antisocial personality disorder (e.g., convicted felons) exhibit undermethylation. The body’s methyl groups arise from methionine, one of the amino acids present in meat and other proteins. imbalances without resorting to drugs. Copper overload is a primary offender in many mental disturbances, including autism, paranoid schizophrenia, clinical depression, hyperactivity, learning disability, and postpartum depression. Excessive copper reduces the brain chemical dopamine and increases norepinephrine. During pregnancy, blood copper levels more than double to stimulate the development of new blood vessels as the baby grows rapidly. If copper levels do not return to normal after birth, then postpartum depression may result and antidepressant drugs usually do not help these women. Vitamin B6 is another nutrient that is associated with many mental health issues, producing symptoms of irritability, depression, poor short-term memory, insomnia, muscle weakness, difficulty walking and even psychosis. B6 is needed to produce important brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA (a relaxing brain chemical). Zinc deficiency is the most frequently observed chemical imbalance in
mental health populations. Zinc deficiency is associated with temper control problems, weak immunity, depression, poor wound healing, epilepsy, anxiety, learning problems and hormone imbalances. Another common imbalance is a chemical produced in the body called pyrrole that binds to zinc and vitamin B6 and increases their excretion in the urine. Nearly one-third of persons diagnosed with depression, behavioral disorders, autism, and psychosis have elevated pyrroles. A urine test can reveal whether a pyrrole disorder is present. This important chemical imbalance can be corrected within weeks using supplements of zinc, B-6, and augmenting nutrients. Experience with ADHD and depression patients report significant improvement within month of individualized nutrient therapy and some of them are able to wean away from psychiatric drugs without a return of symptom. Women with post-partum depression have reported significant improvement after blood copper levels were normalized.

What else has changed with body procedures in modern plastic surgery?
Modern cosmetic surgery technologies, procedures and treatments are making it faster and easier to look and feel our best at the various stages in our lives, thus decreasing the postoperative discomfort and downtime. Today women, especially, feel more attuned to taking care of themselves from the perspective of mind, body and soul. A plastic surgeon with a holistic approach towards surgery can use complementary natural techniques to enhance postsurgical healing. Holistic and integrative preparation prior to surgery usually results in a quicker, better and less painful healing process. Because a body makeover encompasses many aspects

of surgically transforming and renewing the body, adjunct pre- and post-procedure modalities may include working with a nutritionist for continued overall health improvement, acupuncture treatments for improved pain management, meditation
and yoga for stress reduction, lymphatic drainage massage, homeopathic medications before surgery to improve wound healing and organic body skincare. A surgeon’s goal is to produce naturallooking results that will bring your body into balance, thus helping you feel reconnected with your physical self, and to experience a healthy form of renewal. Getting the mind and the body working together pre- and post-surgery is a transformative and lasting experience for those ready to undertake this journey.

he sun supports life on our planet, but its life-giving rays also pose dangers. The sun’s primary danger is in the form of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Artificial sources, like welding machines, tanning beds and lasers, can also produce UV radiation. Most people are aware of how harmful UV radiation is to the skin. However, many may not realize that UV radiation can harm the eyes, and other components of solar radiation can also affect vision. There are three types of UV radiation. UV-C is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat. However, UV-A and UV-B radiation can have long- and short-term negative effects on the eyes and vision. If your eyes are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you will likely experience photokeratitis. Like a “sunburn of the eye,” photokeratitis can be painful. Its symptoms include red eyes, a foreign body sensation or gritty feeling in the eyes, extreme sensitivity

ongenitally prominent ears are a cosmetic deformity that can have a severe emotional and behavioral effect on a child. When a child’s ear protrudes too far from the side of the scalp, a surgical procedure known as an otoplasty can be performed to enhance the position and appearance of the external ear. Five percent of children are affected by prominent ear protrusion. The majority of children genetically inherit the appearance from their parents. Prominent ears can present in a myriad of forms including cup ear, shell ear, bat ear, Machiavellian ear, and lop ear. Most commonly children and adults will often camouflage the deformity with hairstyling. Timing of repair can be crucial in avoiding psychological damage. The ear achieves 85% of adult size by age 3 years and nearly adult size by 6 or 7 years of age. As an individual ages, elongation of the lobule (lobe) gives the appearance of continued ear growth. deformity in prominent ears is an underdeveloped or poorly defined antihelix. This is the part of the ear fold that lies inside the outer rim of the ear. The otoplasty surgery is performed through a concealed incision along the back of the ear. Correction of protruding ears uses surgical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). The cartilage of the ear is reshaped by different suturing techniques. The excess cartilage can be excised and the ear repositioned closer to the side of the head. The procedure usually takes 60 to 90 minutes to perform. It is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia under the direct supervision of a board-certified anesthesiologist. The patient can resume their normal activities within three to five days wearing a soft headband for one to two weeks to protect the ears. Ear surgery, otoplasty, offers almost immediate results in cases of protruding ears visible when the dressings that support the new
shape of the ear during the initial phases of healing are removed. Children and adults who are concerned about the appearance of their ears can experience both the cosmetic as well as the emotional improvement of otoplasty surgery.

Flatfoot in Children By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
D
evelopmental Flatfoot is one of the most common conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it and there IS cause for some concern. Flatfeet are a genetic problem. Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. Congenital bone abnormalities as well as trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch can cause flattening of the arch and foot. A common cause of developmental flatfoot is tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the severe foot deformity. Symptoms include young children constantly preferring to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. Leg pain, especially at night and premature fatigue with activity, especially
in young children or teenagers. Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity is common. Occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain. Signs include lowering or complete collapse of the arch. The front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. Knock-Knees is common which exasperates the deformity. The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination or the patient is standing. The child can be overweight and lacks athletic ability, General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children is common. Abnormal shoe wear, as well as a child or teenager that does not run correctly, occurs due to the deformity Treatment begins with a complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. Occasional immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles with a walking cast is necessary to decrease the deforming force of the calf muscle on the flatfoot. Custom molded shoe insoles (orthot-
ics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. The appropriate treatment plan can be a life-changing experience for the child! Prognosis is excellent, especially with timely management of the problem.

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood/Aventura, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers,
such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

For example: • If you remarry after your spouse dies and have more children, you can’t change your will to provide for your new spouse and children. • You cannot disinherit or decrease the inheritance of a child who turns on the family. • If you create a joint will as a young married couple and become widowed soon afterwards, the terms of the will may bind you for the next 40 to 60 years, possibly longer. • You may not be able to sell assets covered in the will, such as the house This restriction doesn’t apply to individual wills, which can be amended by the testator as long as they have capacity to do so. LEGALLY SPEAKING
SHOULD I HIRE AN ATTORNEY
T
AWARDED 10 YEARS
By Evan H. Baron, Esq.
hese days many individuals going through a divorce try to handle the matter without the assistance of an attorney. They feel that it is better to try and settle the matter without spending large sums of money on legal representation. In all honesty, simple divorces can easily be handled by the parties. Simple divorces are cases in which there are no minor children and no real assets or liabilities to divide. There is a great deal of assistance through the courthouse or the internet to “walk you through” the process. HOWEVER, sometimes people can be as they say “penny-wise and pound foolish”. In an effort to save money on attorneys’ fees they may wind up giving up too much or perhaps not receiving his/her share. An individual who represents him/herself is held to the same standards as a licensed attorney. A judge will not give an individual the benefit of the doubt, just because an attorney is not sitting by his/her side in court. This can often present a problem in a more complicated case. I have often reviewed Marital Settlement Agreements which were entered into without the assistance of counsel. Often these individuals come to see me after the fact, to request assistance in attempting to “get them out” of the Agreement. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to undo what has already been done. A Marital Settlement Agreement or a Mediation Agreement has the same validity as any binding contract. In addition, as I previously stated, individuals are expected to know the law and it is not an excuse to later say “I wasn’t represented by an attorney”. I have often been told by individuals, who had initially attempted to represent themselves, that judges don’t seem to listen to them in court. Now, this could simply be a matter of perception or a true statement. It may also be because non-lawyers are not familiar with the rules of evidence and as such, certain testimony may not be permissible. A court proceeding is controlled by rules of evidence and rules of procedure, which are in many ways illogical and foreign to the average individual. Many attorneys offer free initial consultations and those that don’t usually charge a nominal fee for the initial meeting. If you have any doubts about the law as it pertains to your situation, it would be in your best interests to consult with an attorney. However, an attorney cannot ethically represent both parties in a divorce and therefore can only advise one of the parties. Therefore. initial consultations should take place without your spouse. Lastly, if you have considerable assets such as real estate or a business; or you anticipate a time-sharing issue, you should definitely consult with an attorney to discuss these matters. A little bit of experience can go a long way and ultimately save you money.

Understanding MIS-C
Our City Media 3/21 Sudoku BY CARLOS BARBOSA, MD
f there is something that has changed humanity during this century, it is the COVID19 Pandemic, with its catastrophic health and economic consequences. As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID19) has evolved, and although children have been relatively spared, in areas of the world where the pandemic hit with more frequency, case reports appeared describing children with severe multisystem inflammatory compromise, including mucocutaneous signs resembling a condition called Kawasaki Disease. On May 14, 2020, the CDC recognized it as a New Inflammatory Disorder in children associated with Coronavirus Disease 2019 and named it as Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). MIS-C is a post infectious inflammatory syndrome immunologically mediated. The first case report was published by England doctors in April 2020, followed by many other countries including France, Italy and USA. The MIS-C frequency is 2:100,000 younger than 21 years old with COVID-19, compared to 322:100,000 with COVID-19 in the same age group during the same time period. There have been approximately 1,000 cases in the world until July 2020. The highest proportion affects black, hispanic or south asian populations.

SAFETY CORNER
Spring Clean Safely
S
pring is in full swing! Now is a great time for spring cleaning. Following a few simple safety strategies can help you and your family stay safe during their spring-cleaning efforts. Unlike some popular clothing brands, cleaning chemicals are not “mix and match.” If your spring-cleaning efforts include household cleaning products, be sure to read labels to ensure all products are being used safely. Following a few safety tips can help prevent accidental exposure to potentially poisonous substances. Keeping household cleaning products in their original containers will ensure the chemicals and containers are compatible and easily identifiable. Chemicals can react differently to alternate containers. Storing cleaning products in containers not approved by the manufacturer could cause an unwanted reaction. Store cleaning products away from food items. Manufacturers want their products to be brightly packaged and often look similar to the grocery items. Those of you who saw the movie Nine to Five may recall the scene where the rodent poison was packaged similarly to the Skinny

and Sweet sugar substitute. Lastly, install child-resistant latches on cabinets where non-food products are stored to avoid accidental exposure to potentially poisonous substances. If accidental exposure to a potentially toxic substance does occur, call 9-1-1 first, then contact the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222). The Poison Control Center provides 24-hour immediate access to doctors, nurses, and pharmacists for all poison exposures. To safely dispose of household hazardous waste items (i.e., household cleaners, lighter fluid, paint, fireworks, gasoline, propane tanks, etc.), consider dropping them off at one of the many drop-off sites throughout Broward County. Please visit Broward County’s Waste Disposal website for a complete list of dropoff locations and items accepted. Please visit Broward County’s Waste Disposal website at https://www.broward.org/ WasteAndRecycling/WasteDisposal/Pages/ HouseholdHazardousWaste.aspx. Speaking of safety, April is a great month to review your family’s water safety plan as the temperature warms up. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under age 4. Free swim lessons are available for children ages six (6) months to four (4)
years old by visiting https://watersmartbroward.org/ and downloading the free coupon to enroll their child in the SWIM Central program. Following these few simple tips can help ensure that people of all ages stay safe in and around the water. Children should always be “actively” supervised while in the water. Older teens and adults are encouraged to swim with a friend or a swimming partner to ensure someone is there to help if an emergency arises. If you venture to the beach, stay close to a lifeguard tower and be sure to follow directions given by lifeguards. While boating, make sure all occupants have a personal flotation device or life jacket available for use in the event of an emergency. For more information on how to keep yourself and your family safe in and around the water, join us for one of our virtual education presentations, “Safety in and Around the Water,” on April 8th at 7:00 pm or April 20th at 10:00 am. A special “Teen Water Safety” presentation will also be held on April 15th at 3:00 pm. All classes are free, and registration is available at https:// BSOFireRescuePublicEducation.as.me/.

E
very Sunday morning, when Pompano Beach District Captain Martin Hedelund’s twin boys were young, he would take them on drives around Broward County, showing them various landmarks and sights. Captain Hedelund would do all the talking; Dalton and Martin Jr. sat and listened. They were four years old and nonverbal - a developmental delay caused by autism. Today, Captain Hedelund’s boys are 14. Both can speak and express themselves in different ways. They remember those trips with dad, sometimes down to the date on which they happened. “It has been cataloged in their minds all these years,” Captain Hedelund says. “While the twins are aware of what is going on, sometimes they just can’t tell us that they know. We have faced challenges as a family, but with the blessings of early diagnosis, curriculum-based learning and having two caring parents, Dalton and Martin Jr. have exceeded expectations.” As a veteran law enforcement officer, Captain Hedelund became better at his job from his personal experiences with autism. He learned how to read body language better and pick up on important social cues. His wife, Margi, has dedicated her life to spreading awareness about autism. She is a board member of the Autism Society of Florida. She travels across the state, sometimes with her sons, to teach first responders about autism awareness and how to communicate more effectively with individuals on the spectrum. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, we understand the importance of autism awareness in public safety. We have instituted proactive programs and initiatives and continue to provide specialized training to assist our first responders in serving this population better. Our most progressive initiative is the implementation of the BSO Cares program. The program provides first responders with important information about persons with disabilities so we can respond more appropriately to calls for service. Participation in the program is voluntary and available to anyone who resides in or frequently visits Broward County with a special needs diagnosis. To learn more about the program, or to register yourself or a loved one, please visit www. sheriff.org/BSOCares. We also continue to ensure more first responders receive Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. This unique training enhances the understanding of the signs and symptoms of someone with behavioral health issues. It also helps provide a more prepared and aware approach when interacting with an individual on the spectrum. BSO is honored to have some incredible community partnerships with organizations such as Surfers for Autism and Autism in Flight with JetBlue. Surfers for Autism is a community event that gives individuals with autism a chance to learn to surf. Autism in Flight provides a full airport experience for children with autism and their families. They go through check-in and ticketing, security, boarding and a taxiway ride on the tarmac. The program aims to make the prospect of a commercial flight less intimidating. At BSO, we will continue to work hard to further develop these essential programs and partnerships. Our goal is to ensure all persons are served with respect and protected in the safest possible manner. Service Equals Reward

Canine Urine Marking By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
What Is Canine Urine Marking? Canine urine marking is a natural, instinctive behavior in dogs, but it is not appropriate inside the house. Dogs, especially sexually intact male dogs, urinate on objects to mark their territory or to leave a message for other dogs. Urine marking behavior usually begins when the dog reaches sexual maturity.
What Causes Canine Urine Marking? An intact male dog is most likely to mark when there is a female dog in heat nearby. Intact female dogs are also prone to marking when they are in heat. However, any dog may mark if another dog has urinated anywhere in the house. By urinating on the previous site of urination, the dog essentially “remarks” that location as its own territory. Unless the scent of the urine is completely removed, the dog is likely to keep urinating there. In multi-dog households, dogs, especially of the same sex, may compete for dominance, which can result in urine marking. This same behavior can occur in a confident dog that feels dominant to the owner. Any anxiety-producing situation can trigger urine marking as well. Workmen in the house, the arrival of a new baby, or visiting relatives can all produce anxiety in a dog. Even the addition of a new TV or a new computer may threaten a dog so that it feels compelled to mark the packing boxes. Rest assured, your dog is not trying to get back at you. It’s just doing what comes naturally.
dogs that are neutered stop urine marking within weeks to months of the procedure. Female dogs that are spayed almost always stop the behavior. However, behavior modification is often needed as well.
dog’s behavior improves, you can gradually increase his or her freedom in the house. Be careful to frequently exercise your dog outside, so your dog does not become agitated with long periods of confinement.
Positive reinforcement. Never punish a dog for urine marking. Punishment can create more anxiety, which may only exacerbate the problem. Instead, you need to supervise your pet closely. If you see the dog starting to eliminate inside, interrupt him or her with a firm “No,” and bring the pet outside. When the dog urinates outside, reward him or her with praise and treats. Make sure to bring your dog outside frequently, always providing rewards for appropriate urination outdoors.
Establish dominance. Some dogs need to

Medications. As a last resort, you can consult your veterinarian for medications. In most cases, dogs are given a type of antidepressant. These drugs often take 4 to 6 weeks to make a difference. However, behavior modification is always the first choice and should continue, even with medications. ⊲ Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The

How Is Canine Urine Marking Diagnosed? Your veterinarian will start by discussing when, where, and how often the behavior occurs. A workup should be conducted to rule out medical disorders that may be causing the problem. If there are no medical causes, your veterinarian will need to determine if incomplete housetraining or other behavioral conditions are causing the problem.
How Can It Be Treated? In most cases, overcoming urine marking requires multiple steps:
Neutering. If the dog is sexually intact, neutering is the first step. In many cases, male
