Tiny Planet Preschool Providing a World-Class Education
As a parent, you want the best for your child. That starts with selecting an early education program that will nurture your child while allowing him/her to explore, play and create in their first step to a lifetime love of learning.
Tiny Planet Preschool founder Venancio Ugalde, opened its Weston location in 2015, with the mission of providing a bilingual curriculum and culturally diverse education that prepares students for the future.
Tiny Planet is more than a school, it is a concept inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, where specialists in child neurodevelopment and pedagogical currents based on life skills converge. The Reggio Emilla approach emphasizes child-led learning, collaboration, and the importance of the environment in education.
Tiny Planet offers students and parents a variety of different enrichment programs such as swimming classes, Spanish, yoga, and many more sports enrichment classes. Their facility includes a swimming pool and a full-functioning gymnasium. The school is also equipped with iMac’s, Apple Smart TV, as well as iPads in the classrooms which teachers use as educational tools and homework help for our afterschool program.
We sat down with Venancio Ugalde, founder & owner of Graven International Group, Inc. aka Tiny Planet Preschool, to learn more about his journey in early childhood education.
Tell us how you became an innovator in preschool education.
After a decade of work in our Mexico City-based family education business, in 2012, I decided to immigrate to the United States, specifically to the city of Miami, where I had the great opportunity to open a preschool in the Brickell area. This new adventure gave me a wonderful opportunity to learn the market and create a unique concept that would, in turn, have a great impact on the community.
In 2015 we expanded north and created the Tiny Planet concept in Weston. Derived from the success of the brand in the United States, I decided to expand the concept to
Mexico. We have three Tiny Planet locations in Mexico, with two more locations in the works to be announced in 2024.
That is incredible. Why did you choose Weston for your first Tiny Planet location?
Weston had an impact on me from the first time I visited. I always wanted to open a school in a suburb with high social and economic growth and, above all, offer a unique concept that could generate trust and deep roots in the community.
What makes Tiny Planet unique?
Tiny Planet is a school that values each of its collaborators. We believe that we are responsible for creating a better world for our boys and girls, providing the values and knowledge that allow them to be competitive and better citizens of the world.
The primary strength of our project in Weston lies in the exceptional quality of our administrative and educational team. These professionals, who have dedicated years to serving their community, are well-recognized for their meaningful contributions and ability to foster a familial atmosphere within the school. Among them is Ivis Mateos, General Manager at Tiny Planet.
We guarantee that it will be a pleasant experience for anyone that visits us. You will have the opportunity to see our facilities, meet the team, and to better understand our philosophy and educational model.
▸ Tiny Planet Preschool is located at 16098 W. State Road 84. It is open from 7am to 6pm. For more information visit www.tinyplanet.edu or call 954-384-4884.

Guests were treated with mimosas, hors d’oeuvres, music, modeling, free giveaways and a grand opening sale.
White Lotus is the latest venture of experienced fashion boutique operator, Angela Maleh. Angela, who is also a professional cellist, opened her first White Lotus location on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina eight years ago. She followed that up by opening women’s footwear boutique Island Sole. She brings her warm, friendly personality and approach to her latest venture in Weston.
Welcoming Boutique
The bright, and welcoming decor is the first thing you will notice when you walk into White Lotus. The store has casual yet elegant ambiance. Angela and her staff are welcoming and focused on making guests feel as good as they look.
“When you walk in my door, you should feel like the queen!” commented Angela, “When you walk out of my store, you will feel more beautiful inside and outside. We are so excited to be part of the Weston community and look forward to meeting all of you soon.”
Some people think the boutique was named after the famed show White Lotus on HBO. Actually, the lotus flower holds deep meaning to Angela. “As a mediator, the lotus represents, no mud, no lotus. When a lotus grows, it must go through thick mud to bloom,” said Angela, “Even deeper in meaning, we must endure tough times to experience growth and beauty in our lives.”
White Lotus caters to women with a well-curated selection of items, including hats, shoes, jewelry, home decor, hand bags, and of course, clothing. “I just came into White Lotus for the first time ever, and it is amazing,” Said Weston resident, Jennifer, “It’s the first time that I came into a store and I actually like everything I see. They have a large selection of tops, dresses, pants, shoes, jewelry, hats, bags, household gift items, and much, much more. “New arrivals come in each week. You will rarely see the same things twice,” commented Angela, “Each month, we will be bringing a new fashion and style to our store so that you can dress to impress.”
Concierge Service
Let us dress you! A personal concierge fashion service we will be offering as well. Don’t miss out on this opportunity. White Lotus’ fashion experts will help customize your wardrobe to perfection. This service will help women perfect their personal style on their own terms.
WhiteLotusWoman.com
The boutique will also be launching their website next month for great deals and new product drops before they arrive in the store. The highly anticipated website will include their beautiful spring fashions and so much more.
White Lotus Boutique has something for everyone. They offer beautiful ladies’ fashions, bags, shoes, accessories, hats, jewelry, gifts, and house wares. It is the perfect place to purchase a thoughtful gift for someone you love or to shop for a favorite new outfit.

On May 2nd, at the Savanna Clubhouse, the Arts Council of Greater Weston held its annual reception to thank the many, many volunteers who make possible community events so enjoyed by our residents.
Adult volunteers were in attendance from all Arts Council events including the Foreign Film series, Chalk in the Park, Celebrate the Arts, Weston World Fest, Student Artist Showcase and the Summer Instagram Photo Contest.
President Laura Dobrzanski expressed her appreciation for their dedication and service.
“Without all of the volunteers who participate with us every year, we could not put on the number and quality of events we bring to our residents.”
Volunteers were able to mingle and enjoy light appetizers inside the main banquet room and patio. Members from Arts Council partner organizations including the Weston Music Society, Young at Art, and the Weston Art Guild were present. One out of five media outlets, Sports Activities Magazine was able to attend, while Our City Weston, Community
News of Weston, Somos Weston and DRW were there in spirit.
Former Arts Council board member Betty Silva was honored for her tremendous efforts over several years as Treasurer and for helping maintain the proper records to keep the Arts Council running smoothly and efficiently.
Vice President Carol Lema remarked, "We are extremely lucky to have so many
dedicated volunteers who contribute their time and talents to our events every year. This allows us to provide arts and culture events in Weston which are either free or affordable for the public."
Mayor Peggy Brown, many of the City Commissioners, Officials, and City Staff stopped by to thank everyone and join in the fun.

Weston City Commission Approves Plan to Monitor License Plates & Vehicles
Big Brother will be watching you more closely in the near future. The Weston City Commission voted to approve the purchase of 14 automated License Plate Readers (LPRs) for $768,000 at a meeting last month. The automated systems, which both read license plates and capture pictures of every passing vehicle, will be installed at entrances/exits to the City and at Regional Park.
Weston BSO Police Chief Cavalieri proposed installing the LPRs, which automatically record each license plate that comes into view, along with the location, date, and time. The data, which includes photos of the vehicle, is then uploaded to a central server and kept for an undisclosed period of time.
The technology will automatically notify law enforcement personnel when vehicles listed on Amber Alerts, Missing Persons, Silver Alerts, Wanted Persons, and All Crimes Bulletins are observed. It will also host a history of every vehicle that passes by an LPR on its server. The database will effectively keep track of every vehicle that enters or departs Weston.
The project’s $768,000 cost will be partially reimbursed by funds seized by the BSO from alleged criminals. The "Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act” is a Florida law that enables law enforcement agencies to take contraband that has been used in the commissions of felonies and sell it. The cash received from these sales is deposited into the Law Enforcement Trust Funds account. The money can be used by the same law enforcement agencies that took the contraband to buy equipment like License Plate Readers.
The installation of this type of permanent surveillance and the funding method are not without controversy. Privacy advocates are concerned that monitoring the comings and goings of ordinary citizens and members of the public could be used for less justifiable purposes.
An ACLU report on these systems stated, “The knowledge that one
is subject to constant monitoring can chill the exercise of our cherished rights to free speech and association.” The standard to access the records is quite low, requiring only a “law enforcement purpose” rather than the stricter probable cause or warrant standards other surveillance methods require.
License Plate Readers have become quite popular with law enforcement agencies over the past decade. 15 Broward County cities, 21 Dade County cities and 13 Palm Beach Cities have already deployed the systems.

Weston Rotary-A Year in Review
By Maria Penaloza-Houstoun
event also had record-breaking attendance, further supporting our charities. Edwina credited the success of the club to the collaboration of their 170+ members, who work together on various committees towards their objective of serving those in need.
As the Rotary Year draws to a close, we had the opportunity to speak with the current President of the Rotary Club of Weston, Edwina Auguste. Despite her busy schedule, Edwina generously took the time to share her reflections on the past year and her vision for the future of the club.
When asked about the lessons she learned over the past 12 months, Edwina emphasized the importance of teamwork and the sense of family within the club. She explained “ no success is achieved by one person alone and that each President adds their own unique touch to the already successful club. This year, our focus was on the concept of family, which allowed us to continue our exceptional work of serving and volunteering in the community and making a difference in the lives of others.
When asked about her proudest accomplishment of the year, Edwina expressed her pride in the dedication and support of all the members who helped in our fundraising events such as the Golf and Drawdown events. With the support of sponsors, they were able to award a record-breaking amount of over $200,000.00 to graduating seniors for college from Cypress Bay, Western, Sagemont, Children’s Harbour, and HANDY. We also raised awareness and funds for three charities, Children’s Harbor, Honor Flight and Women in Distress, through our annual Food and Wine fundraiser. Our 25th annual Run for Tomorrow and Commissions Cup
As our time with Edwina came to a close, we respectfully inquired if she had any messages for the President-Elect., Cristiano Nicolucci, for the next Rotary year, she expressed confidence in Cristiano’s ability and is excited about his upcoming role as the President of the Rotary year for 2023-24. “ Cristiano is an exceptional leader who, along with his leadership team, will uphold the mission of service above self for our local and global community. We anticipate an invigorating new year at the Rotary Club of Weston.”
Edwina concluded with this “ I want to extend my sincere gratitude to each and every one of my members and leadership team for giving me the opportunity to serve them this past year. I also want to express my appreciation to our community leaders, the beautiful city of Weston, and all of our sponsors for their unwavering support, which makes our work possible. We warmly invite you to join us at our meetings every Thursday morning at 7:30 am and become a part of our growing Rotary family. We are family”
Throughout the past 11 months, we have had the pleasure of getting to know Edwina and observing her unwavering dedication, warmth, and focus in everything she does. Madame President, it has been an honor to serve in the Rotary Club of Weston under your leadership. Thank you for all you have done.

ESTATE PLANNING CHECKLISTS FOR NEWLYWEDS
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
In honor of any upcoming June weddings, I’d love to share my estate planning checklists for newlyweds.
Love is in the air, and so are your estate planning questions! Many brides have a to-do list a mile long; but I bet they haven’t thought of an Estate Plan Checklist to go with their caterer, bridesmaids, thank-you notes and honeymoon. Do you have a Last Will and Testament? Time to add your spouse as a beneficiary. Also, setting up a trust is like building a cozy nest egg for your loved ones.
Retirement accounts and life insurance policies might not feel romantic, but they're love letters to your future. Make sure to update them to include your new spouse as a beneficiary.
Here are some essentials!
A. Durable Power of Attorney My number one suggestion is to update your Durable Financial Power of Attorney to include your spouse.
A Durable Power of Attorney (“POA” for short) enables your trusted loved ones (called “Agents”) to access and manage finances, investments, insurance policies and anything else that needs a signature. It is useful in many other settings. If your car lease, apartment rentals, investments and bank accounts are titled in the name of one spouse, the POA avoids the expensive and drawn-out court process of having to be appointed guardian by the court for your own partner.
B. Health Care Surrogate Designation Are you traveling for your honeymoon? Make sure your spouse is your Health Care Surrogate and has a HIPAA authorization.
Many people believe that the fact you are married to another gives you the right to speak on their behalf in the event of a health crisis. This is not the case. If you cannot communicate, how do you prove you are the current spouse (rather than ex-spouse). These important documents will ensure that if your spouse is hospitalized, you will not be left out in the dark. The doctor will be able to talk with you and you’ll be able to make decisions on what type of treatment should be provided.
C. HIPAA Release Many folks believe that you have an automatic right to know your spouse’s medical condition, even in case of a stroke, heart attack or another life-threatening emergency.
The Federal Law that controls our private medical information is called “HIPAA.” While you want your medical information protected, you may have a disaster on your hands if your spouse is unable to communicate their medical needs. That’s because in this situation, “protecting” your spouse’s privacy is blocking their doctor from sharing information with you.
D. Checklists and Extras As an Estate Planning Attorney, I have developed a list of some extra pieces of information for my clients to organize. Here are some that you should have on hand:
1. Provide your spouse with a digital asset, email, and password list in case of an emergency.
2. Create a “Home Maintenance” checklist. Do you pay maintenance for your HOA or Condo Association? Who is your go-to handy-man, plumber, or Landscaper? Do you have a gate-code? My office has a three-page checklist of things you never considered to write-down before.
3. If you own your home, you may want to add your new spouse to the deed.
4. Create a list of bank and investment accounts. Some accounts you may want to create jointly while others may remain separate.
5. I also like to create “Dear Family” letters expressing your final wishes. My list of “Extras” continues to grow as I am sure your lives are growing. Congratulations!

Electric Vehicle (EV) sales represent the fastest-growing position of the vehicle market. In fact, according to a Goldman Sachs study EVs are expected to be about half of all autos sold by the end of the decade. One challenge EV drivers face is charging their batteries. To help ease worries about charging availability, The City of Weston is offering free charging at select public locations.
The City entered into an agreement with Florida Power and Light (FPL) to provide electric vehicle chargers at dedicated
parking spaces in two City sports parks and at City Hall.
Partnering with FPL in the FPL EVolution Program is a win-win for the City and the community. The Program is looking to increase the availability of charging stations by more than 50%, stressing the importance of workplace charging accessibility as an effective way to promote the adoption of electric vehicles.
FPL has provided the EV-charging equipment, installation & maintenance and signage. The City of Weston agreed to offer charging as a free amenity and
cover the cost of EV charging at the site's current electric rate.
Construction on the EV stations began in September 2022. The chargers are level 3 (slow chargers) - ideal for workers who come to work in the morning to hook up and get a charge throughout the day or half a day. The Vista Park location is also convenient for students or teachers with an electric vehicle as it is adjacent to Cypress Bay High School.

Broward School Buses Go Electric
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) will be the first public school District in South Florida to put electric buses on the road, helping lower carbon emissions as it transports 54,000 students throughout the county every school day. The District showcased the new electric buses last month at the district’s transportation terminal in Pompano Beach.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) awarded the District a grant of more than $14.8 million to purchase 60 zero-emission electric buses that make up the electric bus fleet. The new buses will serve as replacements for older diesel school buses built in or before 2009. To complete the needed infrastructure, Florida Power & Light Company obtained a federal grant and partnered with the BCPS to install charging stations at each of the District’s transportation terminals.
“When these electric buses hit Broward County roads in the 2023/24 school year, our District will be operating the largest fleet of electric buses in the state and, most significantly, taking an important step toward providing a healthier environment for all of us,” said BCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Earlean Smiley. “This great accomplishment would not have been possible without the support of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida Power & Light Company.”
“As part of FPL EVolution, we are pleased to partner on this endeavor and provide fast-charging infrastructure at six bus depots for all 60 of the electric buses to power up and be ready
to pick up students,” said FPL Vice President of Development for Tim Oliver. “These are the first electric school buses in FPL’s service area and represent the future of transportation that helps to make our communities more sustainable for generations to come. These buses will be charged by one of the cleanest electric grids in the country.”
The District’s Student Transportation and Fleet Services Department includes more than 1,200 buses, with about 950 used to transport students during daily routes. Each electric bus is a standard 72-passenger vehicle that produces no emissions at the tailpipe and is quiet on the road.

Falcon Cove Middle School Student wins
Cool Tropics Scholarship Contest
On March 31, 2023, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) staff and Frank Massabni, owner and CEO of Cool Tropics, surprised Falcon Cove Middle School eighth-grade student Helen Sarmiento with the announcement that she created the winning design in the Cool Tropics Surfboard Design Contest.
In honor of the School Nutrition Association’s National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) that took place in March, BCPS and Cool Tropics came up with a fun design competition to promote the importance of breakfast in students’ academic success.
“Every year, we celebrate national school breakfast week,” said BCPS Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor Cassie Maggio, “It is an opportunity… for public school systems to promote a nutritious breakfast. This year we got creative. Cool Tropics sponsored a contest with us to design a surfboard that would then go on the top of the Raspberry Cool Tropics Slushi to be distributed nationwide.”
The task was to create an original design for the oval-shaped “surfboard top” on the Cool Tropics Raspberry Passion Fruit drink pouch. More than 2,400 students from all grade levels and schools submitted entries. The top 10 designs were reviewed by Cool Tropics and BCPS officials to select the winner. Helen received a $1,000 grand prize and her design will be featured on the product as millions of units are distributed worldwide.
In addition to the grand prize, the second-place winner received a laptop computer and the third-place winner was awarded a mountain bike.
With the theme “Dig Into School Breakfast,” this year’s NSBW encouraged all schools to recognize the importance of a healthy start to the day for fueling a child’s success in school. BCPS Mandates Clear Backpacks for the 2023/2024 School Year
Effective August 21, 2023, only clear backpacks and bags (purses, duffel bags, fanny packs, lunch boxes, etc.) will be allowed on Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) campuses for students in grades pre-K – 12.
BCPS’s stated purpose of this requirement is to “add an additional layer of safety across the District and provide added safeguards for our students, staff, and faculty. While backpacks are not mandatory, they must be clear, and all contents within the backpack must be visible.”
Clear backpacks have been used as a measure to improve school safety by allowing school officials and security personnel to quickly and easily inspect the contents of students' backpacks. The idea behind clear backpacks is that they can help deter students from bringing weapons or other dangerous items to school, as they know they can be easily seen.
However, the effectiveness of clear
backpacks in improving school safety has never been proven. Some argue that clear backpacks are a superficial solution that doesn't address the root causes of school violence, and that they can create a false sense of security.
Critics also point out that clear backpacks can be stigmatizing and create privacy concerns for students who may feel uncomfortable having their personal belongings on display for others to see at all times. Others argue that transparent backpacks make valuable items like iPads and laptop computers more vulnerable to theft.
In a 2022 article, Dan Semenza, an assistant professor of criminal justice and director of interpersonal violence research at the Rutgers University-based New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center was skeptical of the clear backpack approach. “There is no evidence that clear backpacks do anything to improve student safety,” Semenza said. “However, studies show that students hate this policy.”
The new policy applies to students only and does include several exceptions. These include:
• A small non-transparent pouch for personal hygiene items.
• Thermal food containers carried inside clear lunch boxes.
• School-approved sport-specific carrying case for athletic equipment.
• School-approved instrument-specific carrying case for band equipment.

BETH EMET SCHOOLS RECEIVE Florida Green Schools Designation
Temple Beth Emet's Early Childhood Center and K-8 School have made an exciting announcement on Earth Day 2023 - they have received the Florida Green Schools' Green Apple designation from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, making them the first Jewish Green School in Florida.
The Green School program recognizes schools that are dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural resources of the state by continuously enhancing environmental performance in various areas of operation, including communication and education, waste reduction and recycling, water conservation, energy efficiency, and air quality.
The Beth Emet Tevah (Green) Team Leader, Leaha Perl, expressed her pride in working with the TBE community to create a better and greener tomorrow. The school has plans to incorporate sustainability into the curriculum, nature programming, staff development, community partnerships, landscaping, waste management, water and electricity reduction, and more. With the Green Apple designation, the school has taken the first step towards its vision.
Over the past year, the Beth Emet schools
have added more nature studies classes, introduced a "loose parts" and recyclable collection program to promote sustainable art projects, created a new butterfly/pollinator garden, and participated in community beach clean-ups. The next project on their list is to break ground on a children's garden where students can learn, play, and connect with nature.
George Zamora, a Beth Emet Schools parent and Tevah Team member, believes that the Green School designation aligns with his family's values, and he is proud that the school is fostering a greener environment for all.
Robin Sheridan, Director of the Beth Emet Early Childhood Center, understands the impact attending a green school can have on children’s development. “Involving children in nature experiences not only provides great learning and joy, but it also builds a love and connection to the outside world that they can carry with them throughout their lives. We hope this will not only enrich their time in our school but also inspire them to create a more sustainable environment for their future.”

WHY IT IS STILL A GREAT TIME TO BUY REAL ESTATE
eal estate is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your lifetime. Whether buying your first home or investing in rental properties, there are several reasons why it is still a great time to buy real estate in today's market. Here are a few reasons you should consider purchasing now:
1.
INFLATION HEDGE
Real estate is a tangible asset, meaning it's something you can physically touch and see. It often acts as an effective hedge against inflation. As inflation increases, tangible assets like real estate also typically rise. This helps protect your investment and maintain its purchasing power over time.
2.
REASONABLE PRICES
While home prices have risen in recent years, home prices remain relatively affordable compared to major cities worldwide.
By Rose Sklar
RIn addition, the current market offers more options and flexibility for buyers, making it possible for buyers with various budgets to find a suitable property.
3.
STRONG RENTAL DEMAND
With rising housing costs and a growing number of people preferring to rent rather than buy, rental demand is high. Investing in rental properties can generate passive income and build equity while helping to supply much-needed housing for others.
4.
DIVERSIFICATION
Adding real estate to your investment portfolio is an excellent way to diversify and reduce overall risk. Investing in different types of assets can minimize the impact of market fluctuations on your investments, producing a more stable financial future.
5.
LONG-TERM INVESTMENT
Real estate is a long-term investment vehicle, providing financial stability and a lasting legacy. While building equity and seeing returns may take time, the long-term benefits are well worth the patience.
6. TAX BENEFITS
Real estate investment offers potential tax advantages, such as deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, and depreciation. These benefits can help lower your overall tax liability, making real estate an attractive investment option.
7. PASSIVE INCOME POTENTIAL
For those who invest in rental properties, real estate can be a source of passive income. This income can help supplement your earnings, fund your retirement, or even enable you to pursue other interests or passions.
Investing in real estate now can be a wise and rewarding decision, thanks to a combination of factors such as strong rental demand, reasonable prices, and long-term growth potential. Moreover, real estate offers diversification, tax benefits, inflation protection, and passive income opportunities. If you're considering purchasing a home or rental property, seize the moment and take advantage of the current market to secure your investment for the future.

South Florida is Not Always BRIGHT SKIES & BEAUTIFUL BEACHES
South Florida is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and warm weather year-round. However, our home is also no stranger to the devastating effects of hurricanes. Over the years, the region has been hit by numerous storms that have left a lasting impact.
The history of hurricanes in South Florida dates back centuries. Native American tribes who lived here long before European settlers arrived experienced the effects of hurricanes just as we do today. Unfortunately, there is limited information about these storms.
According to Edward N. Rappaport; Jose Fernandez-Partagas & Jack Beven of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the first recorded tropical cyclone to affect the area that is now the state of Florida occurred in 1523, when two ships and their crews were lost along the western coastline. A total 159 hurricanes are known to have affected the state prior to 1900, destroying more than 100 boats and costing thousands of lives.
In 1935, a major hurricane hit South Florida, this time with catastrophic consequences. The storm, known as the Labor Day
Hurricane, had winds of over 185 miles per hour and caused massive storm surges that flooded much of the region. The hurricane caused over 400 deaths and left many communities in ruins.
In the decades that followed, South Florida continued to be hit by hurricanes, although the severity of these storms varied. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew made landfall just south of Miami, causing over $27 billion in damage and leaving over 250,000 residents without power. The storm was a wake-up call for many in the region, who realized that they needed to be better prepared for future storms. Building Codes were changed after the hurricane to ensure future structures would fare better.
In recent years, South Florida has been hit by several major hurricanes, including Hurricane Irma in 2017. The storm caused widespread flooding and left many residents without power for weeks. Although Broward County was largely spared from the worst of the storm, we still felt its effects. In the aftermath of the storm, many residents were left to deal with the damage to their homes and businesses.
Despite the many hurricanes that South Florida has experienced over the years, residents and officials have learned to be better prepared for these storms. Broward County has invested in infrastructure improvements, including flood control measures and stronger buildings, to help minimize the damage caused by hurricanes. The county also has a robust emergency management system in place, which helps to ensure that residents are informed and prepared for potential storms.
In a recent statement, Broward County Mayor Steve Geller emphasized the importance of being prepared for hurricanes. "We know that hurricanes are a part of life here in South Florida," he said. "That's why we need to make sure that we're doing everything we can to prepare for these storms and protect our residents."
South Florida has a long and storied history of hurricanes, with Broward County being no exception. We are now better prepared than ever to manage the impacts these storms can have. It is still incumbent on all of us to be prepared.

Pride Month Is for Everyone This Year!
By: Todd Delmay
Each year in June, Pride is celebrated as an anniversary to the seminal events of June, 1969 in New York City. It was that summer that the local LGBTQ+ community fought harassment and discrimination by sparking the Stonewall Riots in response to a raid of the Stonewall Inn. The protests that followed each night empowered a generation to see that if they were to be liberated and enjoy equality, they would not only have to stand up for themselves, but they needed allies too.
Now, at the federal, state and local levels, progress is made in policy and legislation as well as landmark cases in the Supreme Court. And countless Prides across the country and around the globe recognize the progress made and celebrate everyone that helped make it - including allies! So everyone needs to know that Pride includes them too, especially now.
Florida has become a testing ground for passing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that rallies a vocal minority to a dying view -
point. Only 20% now oppose same-sex marriage, and 61% think we should be more tolerant of the LGBTQ+ community. How is it then that Florida passed a number of laws this year that threaten the progress made, and the very Pride events that celebrate it?
Florida has a checkered history when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community. In 1956 the Legislature’s Johns Committee outed employees of the Florida state government, and in 1977 Anita Bryant formed the “Save Our Children” campaign to among other things pass legislation preventing gay people from adopting. But with more allies than ever before we prevailed anyway, and overturned the adoption ban in 2010, and won marriage equality for Florida in 2015 before the Supreme Court made it legal nationwide. It isn’t surprising then that the reaction to progress has been trotting out old slurs and falsehood in hopes of scaring people back to their regressive opinions.
If you are an ally, you understand that we must all speak up when someone is unfairly attacked, otherwise next time it could be you. So I encourage you to
find a Pride celebration somewhere this year, and in South Florida we’re fortunate to have Pride events all year. From My Hollywood Pride in January, to Stonewall Pride in June and others as late as November, there are any number of ways to make Pride your own. Pride comes in many shapes and sizes, but if you think there isn’t a Pride for you because you aren’t LGBTQ+, then you’re missing the point. The rainbow flag is a perfect symbol for how everyone fits under its broad spectrum, and that only by seeing it all do you realize together we are the light that shines with human diversity. Happy Pride!

THE OUR FUND FOUNDATION: Supporting South Florida’s LGBTQ Community Through Philanthropic Giving
The Our Fund Foundation, South Florida’s only LGBTQ-specific community foundation, is an unparalleled resource and lifeline for many LGBTQ nonprofits and marginalized residents. Its mission is to promote philanthropy, manage enduring investments and conduct impactful grant-making to improve the lives of LGBTQ people in South Florida.
Despite Greater Fort Lauderdale’s recognition as Florida’s LGBTQ capital and home to the largest percentage of samesex couple households in the country, support for organizations focused on uplifting the disenfranchised members of this community was lacking until 2011, when a small group of committed activist philanthropists who recognized that a concentration of LGBTQ wealth existed in South Florida, establishe d Our Fund
Seeking to remedy the deficit of giving to LGBTQ organizations and committed to keeping financial resources within the community, Our Fund has been on an upward trajectory ever since its launch, growing into the third-largest LGBTQ foundation in the nation over the past 13 years.
“By inclusively uniting individuals, institutions, and resources from throughout the region, The Our Fund Foundation inspires responsible giving and works to actively secure the LGBTQ community’s future for generations to come,” said
David Jobin, President & CEO of The Our Fund Foundation
As South Florida’s LGBTQ population grows, so does the corresponding need for targeted support, whether focused on the unmet needs of youth, women, older people, transgender people, or others. Our Fund’s grant programs and philanthropic initiatives address social justice, funding for arts and culture, HIV/AIDS, and other crucial issues in need of support.
“Through our grant programs, philanthropic initiatives, community networking, and educational efforts, we’re able to strengthen community organizations and their leaders, mobilize donors and funders, and strive to make South Florida the most livable community in the country for LGBTQ people,” said Jobin.
How does it work?
The concept is logical: Unite donors with worthy LGBTQ causes they care about, particularly in this worrisome political climate.
“With LGBTQ lives and livelihoods under threat in the state of Florida and beyond, The Our Fund Foundation is fervent in its commitment to protect and uplift South Florida’s LGBTQ community,” said Jobin.
The Our Fund Foundation is unmatched in its impact on the lives of LGBTQ people and causes, with annual investments currently of $1.5–$2M in South Florida LGBTQ causes; in the tradition of community foundations across the country, Our Fund promotes legacy giving, enabling
philanthropists to leave lasting legacies for specific causes and agencies through estate planning. It also manages an Annual Fund and Donor Advised Funds, allowing donors to maximize impact and minimize tax burdens. Thanks to the thoughtful planning of its generous Legacy Society members, Our Fund is able to take a strategic, longterm view of resources that will be needed in the future and how they will be deployed.
With the goal of increasing its grantmaking capabilities and continuing to improve the lives of LGBTQ people, Our Fund takes its fiduciary responsibilities very seriously.
“At The Our Fund Foundation, we are committed to being good stewards of every contribution entrusted to us,” said Mark Blaylock, the organization’s CFO. “We firmly believe in financial transparency with our supporters and the community.”
Our Fund has about $25 million in assets, largely thanks to its proactive board of directors and other loyal supporters. With committed Legacy Donors, it is on a trajectory to double its asset base over the next two years.
Given the organization’s impressive accomplishments so far, that seems like an attainable goal.

A SYMPHONY OF CHANGE: Celebrating the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida
In a diverse world, unity is an anthem we all strive to sing. As we observe Pride Month, we celebrate an organization singing this anthem with unmatched enthusiasm - the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF).
With a mission that echoes, “We sing so that LGBTQ+ people can live their truth through quality music experiences that inspire audiences, open minds, change hearts, and affirm our common humanity,” GMCSF has carved a niche for itself in the hearts of many. Over 170 dedicated members representing a rich spectrum of backgrounds comprise this harmonious force, making GMCSF a deep reflection of the LGBTQ+ community ’s strength in diversity.
The group’s Artistic Director, Gabe Salazar, looks forward to presenting Disney PRIDE in Concert live in June at The Parker. “This concert is a unique music program that everyone will relate to. I am most excited about seeing it all come together: our singers and personal stories throughout the concert, the orchestra, the movie projections.”
But GMCSF’s commitment extends beyond creating beautiful harmonies. The members are role models, philanthropists, and catalysts of change. Their tireless efforts reach across Broward, Miami Dade, and Palm Beach counties, impacting the lives of countless individuals and communities. Bill Spinosa, a
By: Edward Otto Zielke
founding member and Vice President of Membership, has seen this organization’s significant impact on our community. “It is wonderful to see that we have opened up hearts, changed minds, and given a voice to the voiceless and hope to the hopeless throughout our community through our music and message. That was our intent from the beginning, and it has expressed itself differently for the past thir teen years.”
The true impact of GMCSF, however, reverberates far beyond their music. By fostering a space of acceptance and respect, GMCSF stands as a fundamental pillar of support in the LGBTQ+ community. Live performances in high-profile venues and community engagements touch the hearts of over 20,000 people annually, making GMCSF one of the most prominent LGBTQ+ nonprofit choruses nationwide.
As we commemorate Pride Month, let’s honor institutions like GMCSF, who work tirelessly toward a future where diversity is celebrated, and unity is a universal anthem. Their vision paints a picture of “A diverse world united.” Yet, through their music and community outreach, they’re not just singing this vision - they’re living it, one harmony at a time. Their voices remind us of the profound truth of the LGBTQ+ community: love is love, diversity is strength, and our collective pride is an unending symphony of progress and acceptance.

SAGE—Celebrating our LGBTQ+ Elder Community with Pride!
By: Mitchell Zahn, Program Coordinator SAGE South Florida Friendly Visitor Program
The city of Wilton Manors will be celebrating Stonewall Pride this year on June 17. Pride celebrations allow us to embrace and celebrate the breadth and diversity of our LGBTQ+ community. Despite their contributions to the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, our older community members are often forgotten in our celebrations. These pioneers fought for the rights that we enjoy today and remind us to be vigilant in the presence of forces actively trying to set the clock back to a time when our community was forced to b e invisible and live on the fringes of society.
By 2030, studies project the population of LGBTQ+ people over 50 to reach 7 million. Our elders have unique needs compared to the general population, and because of discrimination and marginalization in their earlier lives, which have created a wide variety of challenges to endure today.
Many age without proper community support, are in poor health and are more likely to be financially insecure. One-third of LGBTQ+ adults live at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Many experience mental health challenges and experience higher levels of disability compared to heterosexual older people, as well as delaying necessary medical care due to fears of discrimination or mistreatment by healthcare staff. And most LGBTQ+ elders do not have children, often relying on friends and neighbors for needed help, many of whom have similar needs.
Fighting for LGBTQ+ Elders
Since 1978
For 40-plus years, SAGE has worked tirelessly for LGBTQ+ older people. Building off the momentum of the Stonewall uprising and the emerging LGBTQ+ civil rights movement, a group of activists came together to ensure that LGBTQ+ older people could
age with respect and dignity. SAGE formed a support network for LGBTQ+ elders that is still growing today. SAGE is more than just an organization. It’s a movement of loving, caring activists dedicated to providing advocacy, services, and support to older members of the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ elders fought— and still fight—for our rights. And we will never stop fighting for theirs.
Friendly Visitor Program in For t Lauderdale
SAGE in Florida offers a Friendly Visitor program in Broward County to provide social support to older adults. The program assists individuals like a 60-year-old woman with gardening and a dyslexic 78-year-old man who receives help reading his mail. In Miami-Dade County, SAGE supports at-risk LGBTQ+ elders with care management, emergency financial assistance, and aid for medical bills, rent, and food.
Older LGBTQ+ individuals are more prone to social isolation, twice as likely to live alone and be single, and significantly less likely to have children than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. SAGE addresses these challenges by offering the Friendly Visitor program in Fort Lauderdale, inspired by its successful program in New York City. Volunteers visit and call homebound elders weekly, providing social support from Sunshine Cathedral, an LGBTQ+ affirming Metropolitan Community Church.
Friendly Visitor volunteers undergo careful screening and training and commit to at least a year of involvement. They attend regular meetings, visit for an hour or two
once a week, and make additional calls. When someone seeks SAGE ’s help, a Program Coordinator conducts an initial assessment and, with the client’s consent, refers them to a suitable, Friendly Visitor for ongoing support.
Happy Pride!
As we honor our diverse community, we also recognize the journey we’ve traversed since the days of the Stonewall uprising. Our LGBTQ+ elders have set a robust foundation for our rights, a battle they continue to fight today. We must remember this history and stay alert to preserve these hard-earned rights. We are responsible for keeping their legacy alive by continuing their fight and creating a safer and more accepting world. Remember, every step forward in this journey is a step towards equality and acceptance for all. Let’s keep moving forward together!

ORTHOKERATOLOGY
By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician
rthokeratology (also known as ortho-k) is a treatment that relies on custom-designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye, or the cornea to improve vision. It’s like orthodontics for the eyes and is often compared to dental braces. The patient wears these lenses only while they sleep. After waking, the patient will remove the contact lenses and can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or contact lenses. Vision improvement is reversible but can be maintained if you continue wearing the lenses as directed. Ortho-k is a safe, non-surgical alternative to LASIK surgery and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The shape of the cornea dictates much about the quality of a person’s vision. Myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) are so-called “refractive errors” and are caused by the shape of the cornea and the length of the eyeball. Astigmatism is another condition caused by the shape of the cornea, this time by irregularities in the curvature of the eye. Presbyopia is a natural annoying part of aging, a gradual worsening of near vision that occurs around age 40 and continues until around age 65. Ortho-k can be used to correct all of these conditions. Ortho-k has also been clinically proven to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Myopia is more than an inconvenience. It can pose a serious risk to your child’s long-term vision. As a child develops and the myopia rapidly progresses, the child is at a higher risk of developing dangerous eye diseases later in life. These include retinal detachments, macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. The higher the myopia,
Othe higher the risk of these sight-threatening complications. Thankfully, myopia management can help. Myopia management solutions include ortho-k, multifocal contact lenses and atropine eye drops. New research states that giving children low-dose atropine eye drops at bedtime can slow the progression of myopia. Children who receive atropine drops will still need glasses. Soft Multifocal contact lenses
have also been shown to decrease the progression of nearsightedness. MiSight 1 day is the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lens to slow the progression of myopia in children. If you have any questions about our ortho-k, our myopia treatment options or would like to schedule an appointment, you can contact us at 954-888-9393.

EVERY. BODY. UNLEASHED. BODY20 BRINGS REVOLUTIONARY, TECHNOLOGY-BASED TRAINING TO WESTON
BODY20 opened its newest boutique EMS (Electric Muscle Stimulation) fitness studio in Weston Commons last month. The workout technology is a departure from the traditional hours-atthe-gym approach and offers locals a new way to get and stay fit. The state-of-the-art workout studio enables members to burn calories, reduce cellulite, tone up, and build lean muscle by utilizing an FDA-Cleared electro-muscle stimulation suit.
In just a 20-minute training session, a personal coach will put you through a customized one-on-one program, giving your body over 150 times more muscle contractions than a conventional workout without any need to pick up a weight or use traditional gym equipment.
EMS exercise technology is a type of workout involving electrical impulses to contract muscles. EMS technology has been widely used in physiotherapy for decades with great results. Its rapidly expanding use as a Whole Body Training method provides the perfect combination of a highly effective strength and cardio training.
Tell us about BODY20.
BODY20 is unlike any workout program you have done before. Your personal coach will put you through a customized, one-onone workout program that will deliver results in just minutes per week. Each 20-minute session is equivalent to an intense two to four-hour fullbody workout.
That’s incredible. What are the biggest benefits for BODY20 members versus other training methods?
Each member has a unique set of wants, needs, and desires. As such, your BODY20 coach will design a program to deliver on those goals. Consistent benefits seen by our members include increased muscle and muscle definition, reduced cellulite, improved posture, strengthened core and abdominal muscles, fat loss, back pain relief, and increased overall fitness. Along the way, we utilize an InBody device to precisely track fat loss, muscle gain, body fat percentage, and a host of other metrics to produce a full-body diagnosis.
How long is a typical workout? How often do clients typically work out?
20 minutes! That’s it.
Your entire visit with us will be approximately 30 minutes, which includes arriving, getting suited, working out, cooling down, and leaving. We have three packages that members can choose from that range from four, six or eight visits a month.
Typical clients come every four to five days, which we encourage as it allows the body to repair and rest between our intensive training sessions.
With the grand opening, are you offering any new member incentives?
Yes! Founding Members are getting a great deal with lots of perks! Some have even yet to be revealed.
There are no contracts required and our Founding Members get to work out for two weeks free. Memberships start at $175 per month. For that you receive a personal consultation and workout plan with one of our coaches, an In-Body scan every week to track your results directly on our B20 app, personalized training sessions in our state-of-the-art studio, and, of course, the amazing results delivered through the technology in our EMS Suits.
That sounds amazing. This is a new technology. Is there a way for our readers to learn more?
Yes! We understand that new can be scary, so we want everyone who is even slightly interested (or skeptical) to come see us. You can try a full-body demo for FREE and experience it for yourself. My co-owners and I are all members, and we use the technology weekly, because it works!
▸ To schedule a FREE full-body demo call 954-361-2618 or visit BODY20 today. It is located at 4587 Weston Road, next to Little Hen in Weston Commons. Come in and learn about the incredible results you can achieve today.

Heel Pain in Children
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
Does your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.
CAUSE
• Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel
• Over-activity in children commonly between the ages of 8 and 14
• Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle
• Flatfeet
• Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot
• Growth spurts
SYMPTOMS
• Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity
• Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle
• Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running
• Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity
SEVER'S DISEASE
• Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time, and then tries to get up and walk
SIGNS
• Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel
• Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground
• Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel
• Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens
TREATMENT
• Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot
• Rest and ice
• Stretching exercises
• Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel
• Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament
• Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone
• Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment
• Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing
• Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate

Over the past 4 years, The Arts Council of Greater Weston has offered service awards to seniors based on their service and commitment provided to the organization. They are selected for exemplary personal character, superior leadership in volunteering, and maximum volunteer hours in service to Arts Council of Greater Weston. They truly contribute to
their community.
Claudina Fernandez, the Student Service Award Director for the Arts Council, says, “We are very pleased to award to these students exemplifying such high standards.”
This year recipients of the awards are Megan Sin and Valentina Bonfante, both seniors at Cypress Bay High School.
In Megan’s own words, “Nothing else, other than Weston World Fest, could have provided me with an opportunity to have such meaningful interactions with members of my community. I could not overstate my gratitude in being a part of such an event that has the power to reconfigure and redefine what it means for a community to be connected.” Besides her invaluable help provided to Weston World Fest and the organization, Megan is passionate about arts and
culture and has volunteered in the Weston World Fest event since she was in middle school. In addition to contributing many hours to the Arts Council she also participated in school organizations and other nonprofit organizations. She will attend the University of Florida beginning this fall majoring in Math.
Valentina notes, “I appreciate the opportunity I’ve had to volunteer at the Arts Council. However, what I most value is being able to volunteer consistently for the City of Weston for over three years which has helped me appreciate my community.”
Aside from contributing numerous hours to the Arts Council, she is very involved in extracurricular activities and volunteers at the local elementary school assisting teachers. She is well-organized and has a great work ethic. She will attend Suffolk University in
the fall and major in Marketing & Entrepreneurship.
Laura Dobrzanski, Arts Council President, is enthusiastic about this award. “We truly value their contribution to our organization over the years and sincerely appreciate all they have done for us and the City of Weston at large. We were pleased to present their awards to them at the May 15 City Commission meeting.”

WESTON MUSIC SOCIETY Awards Thirteen Scholarships
On May 1, the Weston Music Society awarded thirteen scholarships to seniors continuing their music education in college. President Gina Catone and Mayor Peggy Brown made the presentations.
The Weston Music Society Scholarship Program exists thanks to the generosity of individual donors which is matched by the Weston Music Society. Teachers in Band, Chorus and Drama at Cypress Bay High School and Western High School nominate the awardees. Gina noted, “The Matching Scholarship Program has been a marvelous initiative for our high school seniors. The WMS has awarded sixty-five scholarships in six years which is a testament to the popularity of this category with our donors.”
Recipients of the 2023 scholarships are:
From Cypress Bay High School:
• Chorus and American Music Theatre, Directors Brad Franks, Tina Gill and Cindy Lutwin
• Gianna Gomez (UNF), Adrian Graff (University of Cincinnati), Connor Lirio (University of Hartford)
• Band, Director Brett Dawson
• Sophia Marrero (FAU), Lauren Naccarato (FSU), Santiago Rios (FIU), Daniela Pafumi (FIU)
From Western High:

• (FSU), Liam Friend (FSU, Clara Ponce (UCF)
The students are all passionate about music and are continuing their studies in performance, music education, and the music business.
A sampling of their comments:
Liam Friend (drum set):
“Jazz has helped me grow tremendously as a drummer and a performer. Thank you for the support in my music education and career and I promise to keep you informed about my future endeavors.”
Connor Lirio (voice, tenor/baritone):
“I am blessed to live in a community that values the arts, and to have a society who will fund and care for the future generations of those involved in music to continue to show and educate and provide for others in this endless cycle.”
Sol Crisanto-Ojeda (Saxophone and clarinet player):
“Partaking in the music program has become an intricate part of my development as a student and who I am today. Beyond learning music and performing, the lessons provided by my past band directors and peers have taught me crucial life skills.”
Stephanie Bescherelle, WMS Board member who coordinated the Scholarship Program, summed it up well. “Listening to the students' recordings and reading through their essays were both delightful and humbling moments. These talented artists have so much to give, I do hope we hear back from them in the months and years to come!”

UNLOCKING THE BILINGUAL ADVANTAGES
ngoing research into the functioning of the brain in bilingual and multilingual language modes has yielded a variety of results, highlighting the significant advantages of raising children bilingually or becoming bilingual oneself. Speaking more than one language is an art that sharpens the mind, enhances cognitive and social development, helps prevent mental diseases, and paves the way for career success.
Boosting brain power Learning a foreign language introduces a whole new system of rules, structures, and vocabulary. The process of understanding and making sense of these new patterns challenges the brain and enhances key learning skills such as cognitive thinking and problem-solving.
Improving memory It's a simple fact that the more the brain is used, the better it functions. Learning a new language not only requires becoming familiar with vocabulary and grammar but also entails recalling and applying this knowledge. The process of learning a language gives your memory an intensive workout, resulting in faster recall of names, directions, facts, and figures.
By Dr. Katya Pizarro
OEnhancing multitasking & decision-making abilities Multi-tasking can be stressful for individuals who are not accustomed to it or struggle with it. However, research confirms that those who have developed the ability to think in different languages and switch between them become much better at multitasking, which in turn reduces stress levels. Moreover, constant language repetition and practice enable multilingual individuals to make decisions more confidently and swiftly.
Maintaining a sharp mind Several studies have shown that language learning contributes to brain health. For adults who speak two or more languages, the mean age at which cognitive skills start to decline is 75. These studies have taken into account factors such as education level, income level, gender, and physical health, consistently demonstrating the positive effects of language learning.
Improving academic performance The cognitive advantages gained from learning a new language translate into higher scores on standardized exams in math, reading comprehension, and vocabulary for multilingual students compared to their monolingual counterparts.
Facilitating travel & understanding the world
When you visit a country and understand the
language spoken there, your chances of connecting with people and experiencing the local culture in a deeper and more meaningful way increase. Your multicultural understanding of diverse people and cultures enhances your confidence and makes you a better global citizen.
Enhancing effectiveness in global business
Learning a new language enhances networking skills and fosters flexibility and appreciation for different perspectives and actions. It serves as a unifying force in an ever-growing globalized society. In our constantly evolving globalized world, learning a language is a powerful asset. It not only aids in travel but also enhances overall studying and opens up career prospects abroad. Acquiring a second language enables us to develop a wide range of mental abilities at any age, contributing to our well-being and positivity.

EMBRACING EQUALITy & LIBERATION
uneteenth and Pride are celebrations borne of a tragic past but fueled by hope, each carrying the promise of progress. Although the histories of our black and LGBTQ+ communities are different, they are connected by the struggle for fundamental human rights. As we progress from our past to a more equitable society, the role of the Broward Sheriff's Office progresses with it, and our goal remains the same – to keep everyone safe.
I continue to be committed to enhancing the culture of service at BSO. When our first responders can identify with our residents through similar backgrounds and experiences, they can better understand our community's wants, needs and problems and identify potential solutions.
A diverse and inclusive public safety
By Sheriff Gregory Tony
Jagency is essential to ensuring that all members of our community are treated with dignity and respect. Since taking office, I have prioritized elevating leadership and recruiting employees that better reflect our county. Today, the men and women of BSO make up an organization that is more diverse than ever in our 108-year history. Each of us brings a different perspective and uniqueness to our communities. Most importantly, the men and women of BSO are hired and promoted on the strength of their abilities and because of their desire and commitment to serve.
We have also implemented programs and initiatives that increase and support equity, inclusion and understanding, such as our LGBTQ+ Liaison Committee, Racial Intelligence Training and Engagement (RITE) courses and the BSO Social Justice Task Force. As we incorporate these programs into what we do, they continue to develop who we
are and what we stand for. The mission of each is to strengthen the relationship between our residents and our organization by creating mutual trust and confidence through community involvement and departmental education.
We celebrate these achievements of social progress, but we do so mindful that there is still work to be done. As Broward County grows, we will continue to recruit the best and the brightest individuals committed to serving our residents. We will create and sustain a history we all have pride in.

Hurricane Safety
By District Chief Todd Draizin
Broward Sheriff Office Department of Fire Rescue and the City of Weston want to remind you to be prepared this hurricane season! As a resident of Weston, you are no stranger to the threats posed by hurricanes. Each year, the state braces itself for the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Hurricanes can cause significant damage to property and infrastructure and put the lives of people in the affected areas at risk. As such, it is essential to be well-prepared and informed on hurricane safety tips to mitigate the damage and stay safe. Here are some hurricane preparedness and safety tips for Weston, Florida.
Have a Hurricane Emergency Kit
A hurricane emergency kit is a collection of essential items you will need during and after a hurricane. It should include a three-day supply of water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, prescription medications, and personal hygiene items such as soap and toothpaste. Additionally, it is important to have cash on hand since ATMs and credit card machines may not be operational during or after a hurricane. Additional items or suggestions can be found at https://hurricanesafety.org/ prepare/hurricane-safety-checklists/
Prepare Your Home
Trim trees and remove loose branches and clear your gutters and downspouts of debris long before the threat of a storm. Approaching storms are not the time to landscape. Consider installing storm shutters or impact-resistant windows to protect your home from flying debris. In case of a mandatory evacuation order, turn off gas and electricity at the main breaker or shut-off valve.
Stay Informed
Stay informed about the hurricane's progress by listening to local news stations, weather updates, or using a weather app on your phone. You can also visit the National Hurricane Center at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
If a hurricane warning is issued, it is important to heed the advice of local authorities and evacuate if necessary. You can also sign up for emergency alerts from Weston’s’
Code red alert system https://www.westonfl. org/residents/emergency-preparedness/ codered-emergency-notification or county's emergency management system at https://www.broward.org/Emergency/Pages/ AlertBroward.aspx.
Evacuate When Necessary
If local authorities issue a mandatory evacuation order, it is crucial to evacuate immediately. The National Hurricane Center recommends that you leave early and avoid the traffic congestion that can accompany mandatory evacuations. Identify your evacuation route ahead of time and make arrangements for transportation and accommodation.
Plan for Your Pets
Include your pets in your hurricane preparedness plan. Identify pet-friendly hotels or shelters along your evacuation route and have a pet emergency kit ready, which should include food, water, medications, and a leash or carrier. Keep your pets indoors during a hurricane to avoid the risk of injury or separation.
Stay Safe During and After the Hurricane
During the hurricane, stay indoors, away from windows, and in a room with no windows if possible. Do not use candles or open flames for lighting, as they can cause fires. After the hurricane, wait until local authorities declare it safe to venture outside. Avoid downed power lines and flooded areas, and do not drink or use tap water until it is declared safe to do so.
Hurricanes are a significant threat to life and property. The Men and Women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office of Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services want you to remain safe. By being well-prepared and informed, you can reduce the risk of injury and damage to your property.

How To Practice Your Short Game
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
The short irons and wedges present the most variability and room for creativity of all the clubs in your bag. With lots of loft on these clubs, we can open or close the club face, and move ball position forward and backward to produce a wide array of shots. I encourage you to practice and to experiment with all sorts of different lies, ball positions, and situations with these clubs.
Better players are extremely accurate with these clubs in terms of both direction and distance control. They can control trajectory, and have experience hitting all sorts of shots in many different situations.
Standard set up with short irons is with the ball in the middle of your stance and your feet shoulder width apart. The first step is to assess your lie. If the lie is poor, in taller grass, or presenting limited access to the back of the ball, you want to choke down on the club and push the ball an inch or two back in your stance. This adjustment in your set up will promote a more descending angle of attack, more control of the club head, and a better chance for clean contact. There is plenty of loft on the club, so don’t worry about the ball getting up in the air.
With a good lie, more confident players will take dead aim with short irons. Be very precise in setting your club face angle at address and ensuring that your body lines are aligned perfectly. We are not looking for power with our short irons, so swing the club with simplicity, ultimate control, and maintain perfect balance throughout your swing. There should be no over swinging with these types of shots. If you need to hit the ball further, simply choose a longer club. Turn your body away from the ball in one piece and load onto the inside of your right leg with back facing the target.
Simplicity is best. Because the focus is on precision rather than power, there is no need to shift your weight radically from one side to the other. From the top, shift target-ward, approach impact from the inside, strike the ball in a slightly descending motion just prior to the swing bottoming out. We finish in good balance on our left side, with belt buckle facing the target and right heel completely off the ground. Hold your finish and observe the shot’s trajectory and shape to completion.
In summary, the focus on short iron play is absolute precision – controlling not only direction but the distance of each shot. Take the same athletic posture and stance suitable for maintaining balance throughout your swing. Typically, the ball should be centered in your stance, but it is very important to assess your lie and make accommodations as necessary. Choke down and move the ball back in your stance with a poor lie. Get very precise with your set up in terms of aligning the club face and your body position. Make a controlled golf swing, striking the ball with a slight descending angle of attack, and maintaining perfect balance throughout.
Practice this on the driving range and also consult your local PGA Professional to help you improve your short game as well.

Traveling With Your Dog
By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
Bring enough of your dog’s regular food and medication for the duration of the trip.
If you plan to travel with your pet, let your veterinarian know ahead of time; your dog may need a health certificate, or there may be other health issues to address.
How Can I Make the Travel Experience Better for My Dog?
Our pets share so much of our lives that many of us don’t want to consider traveling without them. Whether you are flying, driving a car, or RVing, sharing a trip with a pet can add richness to the experience. Proper planning can make the travel experience better and less stressful for you and for your pet.
What Food and Medications Should I Bring When Traveling With My Dog?
There are many factors you can’t control when you are on the road, but changing your dog’s food can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other problems that can be difficult to deal with while traveling. Try to bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the duration of the trip, and try to maintain the feeding and toilet schedule your dog is used to at home. If your pet receives medication, bring enough for the trip and try to maintain your regular schedule.
If you are traveling by car or RV, bringing your dog’s favorite bed, blanket, or toys can also help make the trip more relaxing and pleasant for your best friend. If you are flying, you will need an airline-approved carrier for your dog; you should also request that your dog fly in a temperature-controlled cargo area.
Many people escape the snow by traveling with their pet to warmer climates. Although fleas and ticks may not be a problem during the winter where you live, your dog may be exposed to these parasites at your destination. Make sure you’re prepared by asking your veterinarian for appropriate flea and tick control products.
How Should I Plan for Travel With My Dog?
Spontaneity and family emergencies aside, most of us wouldn’t take a trip without planning some things ahead of time.
The same thing applies when traveling with your dog.
Where to stay: Many hotels and rental properties allow pets. Locating proper accommodations ahead of time and being clear about fees (some places charge an extra fee for pets) can help minimize anxiety when you arrive.
Travel requirements: Most airlines require a health certificate for pets that will be flying. The health certificate generally states that the pet is in good health and free from any infectious or contagious diseases. Don’t assume this document can be obtained from your veterinarian on the way to the airport! Your dog may need a physical examination, fecal exam, or other procedures before your veterinarian can sign a health certificate. Also, the certificate must be obtained within a certain window of time before you travel. Find out from your airline what their requirements are and plan to get the health certificate ahead of time.
Should I Sedate My Dog for Travel?
Giving a tranquilizer to a dog before traveling has pros and cons. Some would argue that if your dog is tranquilized, then he or she is not sharing the travel experience with you— so what is the point of bringing your pet along? Sedation can also have side effects, including lowering body temperature (which could be an issue if your pet is flying in the cargo area of a plane), and causing hypotension (low blood pressure). Others
may argue that a little light sedation can calm a dog that is overly stressed or excited while traveling and can therefore make the trip more pleasant for everyone involved. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Some dogs can be conditioned and trained to travel better if you have time to prepare them for a trip, so they don’t need sedation; but some dogs do very well with a light sedative. Remember that sedation does not address all travel issues; if your dog has severe motion sickness or gets extremely stressed while traveling, it may be better to arrange for a pet sitter or board him or her. Also, not every dog is a good candidate for a tranquilizer, so ask your veterinarian if sedation is a good idea for your dog.
If you have never given your dog a tranquilizer before, give a test dose ahead of your trip. Pick a day when you will be home with your pet for most of the day. That way, if the medication causes excessive sedation or other negative side effects, you will be there to intervene and call your veterinarian for help.

CS/CS/HB 121
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
t is a priority of mine as a state legislator to ensure that Floridians have access to high-quality healthcare. After 3 years of advocating, CS/CS/ HB 121, Florida KidCare Program Eligibility, unanimously passed in the House and Senate and is ready for Governor DeSantis’ signature. The Florida KidCare Program provides health insurance coverage for families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid. This bipartisan legislation expands eligibility for the Program, ushering in tens of thousands of working families and children.
Working families in Florida are struggling. They are struggling to put a roof over their head, pay for childcare and put food on the table. They are also struggling to afford health care for their children - their most precious asset. The current system abruptly takes away benefits when they earn a few extra dollars by virtue of an employment promotion or pay raise. Passage of this
Ibill creates a glide path to maintain health care insurance coverage for their children, eliminating the fiscal cliff. This ensures working families can achieve economic prosperity while keeping their children healthy.
CS/CS/HB 121 increases eligibility for the subsidized KidCare program to 300% of the federal poverty level. This bill requires the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation to establish new monthly premiums in 3-6 income-based tiers. This means, as a family’s income increases, their premium will increase which will mitigate the fiscal cliff and more readily prepare them to afford healthcare when they no longer qualify for the program.
June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
I am excited to announce that I will be bringing the “Brain Bus,” a mobile Alzheimer’s education program, back to Weston this summer! This invaluable resource is part of a statewide mobile outreach initiative. People with Alzheimer’s and caregivers can get a better understanding with this great resource. The Brain Bus will arrive at the Weston City Hall on July 18th from 2 pm–4 pm!

Student Artist Showcase Winners Awarded
Throughout the month of April, an exhibit of the amazing work of talented student artists was on display at the Weston Branch Library. Over 10 schools, representing 22 art staff submissions, and 237 pieces of artwork from Pre-K through 12th grade showcased the superb talent of the student artists. Each school was allowed to submit up to 12 pieces.
President Laura Dobrzanski noted, “We are so fortunate to be able to showcase such exquisite and diverse works of art from our local students for a period of time at the library and then recognize and congratulate the many deserving students for their contributions to art and culture. Every year we are blown away by the artwork and treasure the genuine smiles from the students as they are recognized for their tremendous accomplishments.
The judges for the placement awards were Lifrancis Rojas, Paola Gutiérrez, and Magdaly Montenegro, all artists and members of the Weston Art Guild. Lifrancis commented, “Art is subjective. When it produces an effect on you, it has reached its purpose. SAS artists have presented a whole exhibit that includes different kinds of mediums, different kinds of techniques, from the most naive to the most perfect strokes. It was a delight to walk through the library and admire the students’ creative works.”
On May 10, the Arts Council of Greater Weston held a reception for the 28 award winners and their families. Commissioner Byron Jaffe was on hand to present the certificates of participation and awards alongside Gryssele Machicote, Director of the Student Artist Showcase and President Laura Dobrzanski. The families were elated and the students filled with pride at this recognition of their talent.
Gryselle Machicote noted, “Our collaboration with the Weston Branch Friends of the Library, the Weston Branch Liaisons, the City of Weston, and, most important, Greater Weston Area schools further enhances our mission in enhancing the artistic skills of our youth.”

GREETINGS FROM
Chamber President!
By Patty Archer
The City of Weston is growing at an impressive rate and we’re seeing a lot of new businesses opening up in the area. Our Events Calendar is quickly filling up with ribbon cutting celebrations that we can look forward to sharing with these new members of our community.
Ribbon Cuttings are a great opportunity to meet local business leaders, as well as elected officials and other community leaders. Showing support for the business community is integral to fostering a sense of overall community pride and encouraging businesses to support each other. Ribbon Cutting events are also great opportunities to gain insight into new businesses, products or services, and industries. The general public is always welcome to attend Ribbon Cuttings for any new business - the more the merrier to get the word out!
Remember that small businesses are the backbone of a local economy, and more of each dollar spent locally stays in the community when it's spent at a small business. Supporting local small businesses can also be in the form of following and liking them on social media or leaving them an online review to help encourage others to try out a new business in town.
By making your business our business, the Chamber of Commerce is engaged in the priorities of our membership, businesses, community, and future generations of professionals and their business needs. Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more information and our event calendar, visit www.westonflchamber.com.

Patty Archer
